Jo9977 · 07/08/2007 12:06

And excuse me while I have a quick freak over all this birth discussion!! I just don't know what to expect and I'm not even sure I really want to!!!!

Went to midwife today - are they all so rushed? Just felt like loads of info was thrown at me and I was ushered out the door before I knew it! Apparently everything is fine but I wanted a bit of reassurance and felt I had to push for it.

Slacker · 07/08/2007 13:34

Good grief mymissus, glad you're ok after that fright . Hope the nuchal scan goes well.

Jo9977 - welcome to the production line that is maternity care in the 21st century, even the nicest midwives are overworked and in a hurry. Unless you get lucky with your midwife or hire an independent midwife you'll find that you don't get as much 'support' as you'd probably expect, but there may be other ways of accessing midwives in your area other than at routine appointments, do they have a drop in clinic or aquanatal classes or something? I don't know where you are in Coventry but I just googled and found this, for example:
"The aquanatal sessions at Bedworth Leisure Centre are recommended for the useful exercises and for great fun. They are aimed specifically at pregnant women and led by a practising qualified midwife."

Lucylou21 · 07/08/2007 14:36

Eeek mymissus, glad you're doing okay after the crash! That sounds so scary

Had a trip to the docs today as joy of joy I've got thrush and I've pulled something in my back. I'm home alone all day so I have no choice but to keep lifting Dd and it is agony! My Mum bought me one of those bump support belts and that is helping a little. I breezed through my first pregnancy and I'm only just realising how lucky I was
How is everyone else faring if this is the second one?

violeta · 07/08/2007 14:37

I had my scan this morning - I was so nervous! But, yes everything absolutely fine - there is a baby in there (and one not two!). It all feels so real now - I'm going to go on a shopping trip at the weekend and buy a babygro or two to celebrate!
The nuchal measurement was within the normal band, but I'll get the full risk assessment next week.
My due date will have changed now because it's apparently bigger than expected, making me 12 plus 3 (yippee - past the 12 week barrier) but I'll get all that confirmed I expect when I see the midwife for all of my blood tests, etc next week.

mymissus: hope all goes well for you today.

morningglory · 07/08/2007 15:35

mymissus: What a fright! So sorry that you had to go through the alarm and worry. Now to deal with the insurance headaches! Hope the nuchal goes well, though.

Lucylou: Poor thing. IKWYM about the second pregnancy being rougher. DS is 3 and a tornado, who is stubborn to boot. I'm finding it exhausting just watching after him! Also, I'm bigger with this preganacy (found my notes from my first pregnancy and I'm as big at 12 weeks as I was at 19 weeks ), which doesn't make it easier. Funny, as I'm eating healthier and, I think, less this time around! Amazing the difference between walking everywhere and driving everywhere makes! I think the most eshausting thing is the lack of peaceful, chill time. I had loads during the first pregnancy, and none with this one.

Violeta: great news about the scan. I also am waiting for my scan on Friday to start buying new baby things. Hopefully, I'll know whether to get pink or blue then.

Anyone here thinking about home birth? I'm starting to toy with the idea, and will ask midwife tomorrow what the logistics are. DH will have a panic attack if I decide to do this, but I really don't think I'll have much choice.

miniandme · 07/08/2007 16:52

Well had consultants appointment this afternoon wwhich was very successful, they have said that i have a very high chance of having the twins vaginally woohoo!!!! also that my expected delivery is between 35 and 37 weekswhich means any time from xmas !
Have also told me i will get my 20 week scan then another at 28 weeks then will be scanned every 3-4 weeks from then till delivery so loads of photos for the album!!Also that i will be given the choice of having a steroid injection at 24 weeks to give the beans a boost in case of prem delivery.
So all in all a good appointment which im very very pleased with.
Hope everyone else is well

mymissus · 07/08/2007 18:23

Thank you all for your kind words

Back from scan - all well thank God. Measurements all fine and my end risk is 1:4664 which is a really massive relief

Got a splitting headache still so off to bed.

Hope everyone else is happy and well

gingermumi · 07/08/2007 20:16

Mymissus and violeta congrats on scans. So sorry about your accident mymissus - take it easy and look after yourself.

Not sure if/when i will get to post over next few days as dh goes into hosp tomorrow for his hip op - occupational health are coming to bring him a special chair and loo seat - it's going to look like an old people's home at my house!

Not sure if anyone has scans due but hope all is well with everyone over next few days.

Slacker · 07/08/2007 20:21

Great news mymissus - hope the headache's gone tomorrow. And congrats on your good scan too Violeta.

Miniandme - why do they think you'll have the babies so early if you're going natural? Twins can hang on until 40 weeks or more!

MorningGlory - I'm definitely planning a homebirth (again!), sounds like a good idea in your position too. If your DH is nervous at the prospect send him along to the Homebirth site where there's loads of research showing that homebirth is safe. My DH is very far from being a hippy sort but considers homebirth a no-brainer. Especially after DS2 would have been born in the car if we'd set off for hospital - was supposed to be a domino birth but DH and the midwife were still trying to wrestle me into my trousers when I announced I needed to push

miniandme · 07/08/2007 21:54

They dont think ill go that early, its just that thats the age they class the babies as viable so thats the gestation they give steroids. All my singletons were 2 and 3 weeks early so consultant reckons delivery of the twins between 35 and 37 weeks if all is well.

Bessie123 · 07/08/2007 23:58

Hospital brought my due date forward by a couple of days - just changing myself on the list.

Lljkk - yes, all private. It's costing much more than we can afford, but everyone tells me the peace of mind is worth it because tower hamlets services are rubbish.

Lucylou21 · 08/08/2007 12:10

Hello,
Just wondered if anyone on here also has a Livejournal? I've just set up a new journal for waffling about my pregnancy and I wondered if anyone had done the same?

mutha2beagain · 08/08/2007 12:50

Gosh things have been busy in the 3 days since I've been away.

And a lot of chat about birth plans which I guess is the next big decision once the 12 week milestone has been passed.

I have to say I am rather dreading it all - Ds's birth was not the finest experience of my life - apart from him arriving surprisingly intact and completely unaffected by the trauma at all (which I have to be grateful for). So I am rather dreading labour again. Will meet with MW in a couple of weeks to talk it over and I'm sure they're not going to be very impressed with me if I broach the subject of EC. Let's just see. My worst nightmare is to be left ignored on a ward labouring away with no pain relief dilating at the speed of a slug for hours on end (slow labours run in the family - my grandmother went for 3 days!). But I'm also rather reluctant to get my belly cut open if my body can manage it somehow. No easy way round it is there?

Off to France in a couple of days to see BIL and family. Can't believe that I was also pregnant this time last year (that was before MC) so that's two years in a row I am going to have to cope without yummy runny cheese, wine, champagne, salami and foie gras while everyone else tucks in. Still there's always the patisserie .

lljkk · 08/08/2007 16:55

"No easy way" to have a baby, said Muhta, totally agree with that one. Actually, it's a bugbear for me "Oh you had an epidural, you took the easy way out!" OR "Too Posh Too Push" -- Honestly! As if major surgery was a trivial matter. And epidurals are hardly risk free... AND they sometimes don't work.

All I know is... when I talk to people who had traumatic 1st birth experiences, all of them find it MUCH easier and relatively tolerable next time (and that's not counting those who opt for elective CS 2nd time).

Jo9977 -- I won't lie to you, most 1st birth experiences are tough (and many are also wonderful). But billions of women have managed it, so YOU CAN DO IT, too.

princessllama · 08/08/2007 19:25

poor you mymissus. can you get yourself to a cranial osteopath? it really helps with whiplash.
congratulations to all successful scan people.
am recovering from mil's recent trip. she can be such a witch-so negative about the baby, all she said was you'll have your work cut out. still, the great news is that she lives a long way away.
had scan today. everything in right place and doing what it should. felt really pleased. told my dad and he was excited about having another grandchild and not too much about the disaster of a 15 month age gap {which we're getting alot of]
muthatobeagain i was pg last summer in france too. gutting not to be able to drink lots of good wine as well. tbh, i ignore all the stuff about runny cheese etc, just have to avoid foie gras because of the liver issue. so not too bad. and i intend to eat large quantities of croissants.
off tomorrow so there'll be lots to catch up on when i get back.

CountTo10 · 08/08/2007 19:57

Hi all hoe we are all well. Welcome to newcomers and congrats on the good scan results!!

Anyone else suffering with headaches at the mo? i seem to have them every night at the mo.

beansprout - you sound like ou had exactly the same labour as my friend - poor you!! A different friend of mine had an elective c-section first time round (breech) and really wanted v-bac second time round. They don't let you go overdue, basically they agree a date sometime in your due week or just before to do a c-section if you haven't gone into spontaneous labour. My friend did go into labour but it only progressed to a certain point and then got stuck. They persevered but they can't give you anything as the contractions would be too strong too early and they didn't break her waters till late. In the end, they told her they had to do an emergency c. She was lucky as her scar and begun to rupture which is dangerous. I would discuss your feelings and options with your midwife/consultant and get some idea of what support etc they offer. It's totally up to you what you do and they should support you either way.

Redbush · 08/08/2007 21:05

Hi all,
Really sorry mymissus to hear about your bump in the care agree that a craniosacral osteopath would be a good move to help with the headache and neck pain .
Congrats to the good news from scans today.
Finally have my nuchal scan tomorrow - hoping it will make this pregnancy feel more real. I can remember being so happy and excited last time - for some reason this time seem to be expecting the worst.
Anybody else suffering with hayfever? or is a stuffy noise something to do with being pregnant?

Redbush · 08/08/2007 21:06

OOps obviously that was meant to say car

scully · 09/08/2007 05:18

You can go overdue with a vbac. dd2 was 8days late and they would have let me go to 10days over before deciding what to do next. The hospital obviously assess each case differently and were happy to leave me be a bit longer, for which I am very grateful.
I love soft cheeses but unpasteurised ones and uncooked seafood/meat are 3 of the main things I avoid when pregnant. Listeria can be very serious for the baby and some European countries have higher incidents of it because they don't worry about the health warnings as much as UK/US/Australia etc. I remember going to La Rochelle when pregnant with dd1 and not eating oysters was a major struggle

lightwind · 09/08/2007 09:08

Hello

I'm new here - due on 16 Feb 2008, so I think I'm in the right place... I'm 39, and this is my first baby - I live in Putney, London.

I've been reading mumsnet posts ever since I found out that I'm pregnant (nearly 2 months ago, though didn't want to post until past the 1st trimester). This site is brilliant. Esp because I don't know anyone else who is pregnant. My first trimester was a very lonely place - dh didn't want to tell anyone and I desperately wanted to talk about it. And because being pregnant feels like its changed my world (in a good way), I'm still trying adjust, but I feel very unfamiliar to myself and a bit lost. Like I'm not sure if I'm the same person any longer. And that's apart from all the physical symptoms - dizziness, nausea, carpal tunnel, poor digestion, tiredness, insomnia... the usual.

Just feels nice to be part of a community of people who are in a similar place.

Lightwind

wotsits · 09/08/2007 09:19

Hello Lightwind and welcome .
I'm glad you're happy to have found us. I only discovered Mumsnet when I was about 38 weeks pg with DD. I've been an avid "lurker" ever since.
I'm now 12 weeks pg with DC2 and we've only just told the in-laws. Will be telling my parents later this morning (cos of time difference) so I think today's going to be a happy day for me.

Bessie123 · 09/08/2007 11:50

Redbush, I am having the same problem. And of course, no anti-histhamines during pregnancy. I was stung on the arm by a wasp at the weekend and my arm blew up like a balloon. Not v attractive.

gingermumi · 09/08/2007 13:10

Welcome Lightwind and congrats

Redbush - there is something called allergic rhinitis in pregnancy which sounds like what you've got - i would ask about antihistamines as i was told you can take piriton (the drowsy one) but not the newer non-drowsy types. How did nuchal go? Hope all well.

Dh in ITU today so waiitng until they say i can visit - hopefully soon as it's been a very long day! Not sure when i will get chance to post again for a few days so take care everyone.

Jo9977 · 09/08/2007 13:58

Hi there!

Congrats for all the good scan results - good news!!!

Welcome to Lightwind - you're the same as me, expecting your first and 39 - bit scary but exciting Had you been trying long?

Thanks for the lowdown Slacker and lljkk...I guess you just need to be prepared for anything (if that's possible!) Am hopefully starting aquanatal classes next week but will need to talk to my boss as they're during the day. Apparently I'm entitled to the time off but don't want to be seen taking the pee if I need to call in some favours later!

Redbush, I've got a stuffy nose, and also am still being bitten to death by midges. I spoke to the obs consultant today and he said Piriton at night in moderation was ok. More conflicting advice!

BTW I was very relieved not to be pressured about not wanting extra tests because of my age as I thought I would be - in fact the whole visit was pretty relaxed and down to earth.

Gingermumi - really hope all goes well with dh and things get back on track quickly.

Countto10 - I'm getting headaches too but am putting a lot of it down to dehydration - can't seem to get enough water down me!

lljkk · 09/08/2007 16:03

I had lots of Piriton in my 1st pregnancy for midge bites, maybe the research has changed but I was assured it was safe then.

Mosiguard is supposed to be safe to use in pregnancy as an insect repellant. It worked pretty well for me (to keep midges away).

I suddenly have a bump -- well, sort of. Body is thicker around the middle and it just "feels" pregnant.
