@HidCat I too have just under 6 weeks to go, but feel like hulk might make an early appearance for some reason! Probably wishful thinking on my part!

BadBadBeans · 02/02/2019 23:53

@ballanj I didn't have maternity pads with wings - not for DS, nor for the miscarriage I had last year. The ordinary Tesco ones were brilliant for me. I went one size up on knickers. I'm considering buying these mesh ones from JoJo for the first few days as they are washable: www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/carriwell-5pack-hospital-knickers-b3856.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnNXiBRCoARIsAJe_1cqaHmDlBjA_dj7x_7okRHczS4Ws_xuQa7DtyG8jQM80xgIyN4WnCGEaAoLzEALw_wcB

Wineandchoccy · 03/02/2019 03:12

@BadBadBeans have you tried any lansinoh or similar for your nipple? Mine were getting sore from leaking and feel a lot better since using lansinoh plus I have been using reusable breast pads.

My dd is almost 4 and certainly knows how to push the boundaries Sad
have you any of those magic painting sets where you fill a brush with water and the pages change colour?
Duplo/mega blocks/stickle bricks
Teddy or doll with buttons/zips/laces etc
Car mat and cars
I have laminated pieces of paper and a dry wipe marker pen in my bag for when we go to cafes to keep dd entertained
Orchard toys website has loads of free things that you can print off and colour
A doll with nappies and a bottle

TheWanderlust · 03/02/2019 04:57

Love the dry wipe marker trick @Wineandchoccy - I used to do this for one of the disabled children I cared for incase we got stopped at traffic lights in the car.... saved me hundreds in damaged seats and cleaning costs!!

Angelmiracle · 03/02/2019 06:08

Have woken to a stinging throat πŸ˜‘ Got up for a lemon and honey drink and some paracetamol. I miss throat sprays for this. Hope it doesn't progress much.

@ballanj I'd also been avoiding buying nightdress type things as that's totally not me. Went to Primark yesterday and got 2 in the sale at Β£2 each though which should do the trick. Not overly flattering but c'est la vie. Tbh I hate wearing stuff with buttons so this is a very big change for me. I've never worn a blouse or anything in my life as I hate the look of them.

How many maternity pads do people advise to take to hospital? As in ATM I've got a box of like 20, I think, and my husband reckons I don't need them all/they take up space whereas I think I should be taking more than that but I've got zero experience to defend this opinion other than "people on the internet say take lots" ... So what is a quantifiable definition of "lots"??? Likewise same with nappies as we have a pack of 20 ATM but he thinks we should only take about half, but I'm worried that we may need more than that particularly given neither of us are nappy experts so imagine we will lose more than usual to leaks etc initially.

I've also been potentially diagnosed with ICP. I mentioned the itchy feet at night thing again on Thursday as it's got even worse so they did some bloods and then called me on Friday to ask me to come into the day assessment unit at the hospital as they want to do more tests. When I was there they said I'd come back with scores that were just into the "diagnosis" range so wanted to repeat and also do a test on my bile then explained what they'd do as a consequence of the various results from there. I'm not overly worried as it seems like the biggest cause for concern is stillbirth and I currently have a very active baby so will be immediately able to tell if the movements change, it's more just another thing to potentially add to the list of things wrong with me. The only other thing is that they'd potentially want to get it out early which would mess up my working until 39 week plans...!

@gronk27 you were going to measure the Chico mattress for me but it's fine now. I got some branded sheets as they were discounted and they are actually too big despite saying they're 50cm wide and my mattress being bigger than that...so all is good, thank you.

Hermagsjesty · 03/02/2019 07:46

I’ve got 10 pads but am worried I’ll need more... I’ve got 14 nappies - based on 7x a day and being in for 2 days. I think it slightly depends how central the hospital you’ll be in is and therefore how easily your DH can pop out for extra supplies if you’re short.

SquirtlesMumAgain · 03/02/2019 08:26

Rule with Nappies is 1 for poo and 1 for wee each day of life early on I think (with spares obviously!)

Nighties are definitely not my thing - last time just for giving birth and the immediate aftermath when anything right was uncomfortable. This time I have ended up in them all pregnancy as I couldn't take anything on my bump for so long with the sickness.
Big knickers and maternity pads for me this time. The pads are like sitting on a cushion!!!

I need to do some bits for DS. Love the laminated sheet ideas. I also love the magic colouring pens (like real pens but colour when used on the books). He is thankfully pretty good at playing on his own (at almost 4) but will no doubt take se adjusting. I am getting him a present from her that he has put on his birthday list that will keep him busy, and my lovely sister in law gave us 3 parcels for him at Christmas for him to open once she is here.

With DS we were semi prepared but his size made things difficult and so DH just went to the 24 hour tesco nearby to buy things like micro Nappies and tiny baby clothes. Most of us with have that option.

Has anyone done their birth plan yet?

BadBadBeans · 03/02/2019 08:36

@Wineandchoccy I've got lansinoh but hadn't thought of putting any on. It's not sore at all, it just looks like a little bobble in the middle of my nipple. Boobs are so odd! BRILLIANT ideas for busy box, thank you. Especially the magic painting! I want things that can't go horribly wrong while I'm feeding, and I've got some non-spill paint pots I could put the water in. And you are quite right, I must get a doll! Will check out Orchard toys too and get a little folder of things printed up.

@cardboard33 take the 20 pads and the 20 nappies, and have a bag at home with more packed for DH to bring if you stay in longer. You don't have a car do you? Otherwise I would suggest keeping extras in a bag in the boot, which is what I am going to do. We went through about 8 nappies a day with DS when he was born so I would think you want 20 as a minimum to be safe, especially if you have a long bus journey to go and pick up more stuff.

@Hermagsjestey Take 20 pads! You don't want to run out and have DH come back with ordinary sanitary towels! (Mine came back with tiny little panty liners when I miscarried - I was not impressed!!!!!)

Wineandchoccy · 03/02/2019 09:18

@cardboard33 last time my waters went 24 hours before being induced and I went through loads of pads so I would pack the 20. I have 1 pack in my bag plus 1 pack in my emergency bag.
I work on the basis of 8-10 nappies in the early days.

Sictransitgloria · 03/02/2019 09:36

@toastfiend congratulations, gorgeous baby! Can’t believe we have our first baby on this board.

Hope everyone is ok, just catching up. I’m one of the later ones and think baby will come in April tbh. 32 weeks yesterday and actually feeling good although have a bit of heartburn and a few aches and pains.

I’m pretty relaxed about stuff but starting to feel the urge to wash the baby clothes and generally get organised. I wasn’t going to do my hospital bag for a few weeks but reading through I think it’d be a good idea to start buying bits and pieces. As for knickers, I recommend Sainsburys full briefs. They look awful but they are so comfy!

toastfiend · 03/02/2019 09:59

I've found Tena Lady Extra much, much better than specific maternity pads. They're more comfortable against my stitches as well and seem to stay in place much better, whereas the maternity pads were always going astray, which could lead to embarrassing moments. I had disposable knickers for the first few days. They were OK but not very comfy. Quite nice to be able to bin them and forget about them though. I've 'graduated' back to proper pants now. Highly recommend M&S 3for2 granny pants about 2 sizes bigger than you'd usually take. They're nice silky fabric so are comfy if you've got stitches and are definitely full coverage! Plus would sit high enough on your belly to cover the wound if you had a c section. They do look terrible, though. πŸ˜‚

Amounts wise if you're not able to leave bits in the car I'd advise taking more than you think you might need. If you have stitches you want to be able to change them very frequently to keep them clean and comfortable and there's no way to predict how long you might be in hospital for. We've been here a week and I've gone through a whole pack of maternity pads and a pack and a half of Tena Lady and my bleeding is pretty light (the midwife even commented on how light it was and I felt like I'd won a prize πŸ˜‚).

Nappies wise, we went through a big pack of Pampers and most of a smaller pack of some random brand we bought in the hospital pharmacy this week, but he's a champion wee and poo-er and has a tendency to wee as soon as we put a new nappy on him, no matter how long we leave him with the old nappy after that first blast of cold air. Much cheaper to buy at your local supermarket and bring them in rather than a panic buy at the hospital, though, if you end up needing more.

Nighties wise, I didn't have time to get one and quite glad I didn't bother as I hate them and wouldn't have worn it afterwards. I laboured in a cheap black maternity dress I happened to be wearing anyway and during transition I got so hot I told them to cut it off me (lovely, rational midwife took it off me rather than cutting it πŸ˜‚) so just gave birth in my bra so that was the only thing that got messy. They got me to take my bra off once he was out and happy so we could do skin to skin. By that point everyone in the room had seen my bits and the midwife was dutifully sewing them back together so I decided I didn't really care if they saw my boobs too. You'll be given clean sheets and stuff too so can always pull them up around you and baby if you prefer and are more comfortable like that. I'm quite pleased I didn't waste money on a nightie, even if it is only a couple of pounds. I have also preferred having really soft pajamas when in NICU with him. Means I can just take the top off or tuck him down it if I want to do skin to skin and I feel more comfortable and less exposed when walking around in them. Make sure they're nice and lightweight, though, whatever you buy, the rooms are so hot!

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 03/02/2019 13:56

@Angelmiracle I hope you're not getting what I've got. I started off with a tingly stingy throat and have not come down with the worst flu. I didn't venture out of my bed yesterday and woke up at 4 this morning drenched in sweat. I never get ill either... damn pregnancy immune system!
Think I might call in sick tomorrow for the first time ever. Gutted as I wanted to get all the babies clothes washed and my hospital bag packed this weekend.
@toastfiend thank you for the advice. I'll have to get some tena as well as mat pads. Hope you and baby are doing well x

HidCat · 03/02/2019 14:07

@cardboard33 at least if they decide to intervene early you can still adjust your finish date with 28 days notice or with mutual agreement once you have a date.

I went straight into pyjamas post birth last time with full briefs and normal maternity pads. Got a nightie and pjs in my hospital bag though. I can't remember how many Nappies I've packed but going to just chuck the rest of the pack in the car as well.

Sictransitgloria · 03/02/2019 15:10

I just bought some packing cubes. Dunno if it is a waste of 6 whole pounds or if they will be useful. A friend advised that partner pack the bag (never gonna happen) so at least he will know where stuff is when needed?! I dunno - this is way beyond my organisational skills of just shoving everything in a bag on the day and hoping for the best πŸ˜‚

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 03/02/2019 15:25

@Sictransitgloria a friend recommended that to me too. Not sure I'd trust my husband to pack everything though! I sent him out to collect the Chinese takeaway yesterday and he came back with the wrong order... twice! πŸ˜‚

Sictransitgloria · 03/02/2019 15:30

@assumeitwassomethingclever πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ oh dear!

WhatALearningCurve · 03/02/2019 15:47

@Sictransitgloria @AssumeItWasSomethingClever I plan on putting everything in freezer bags and labelling in very big sharpie ha

SquirtlesMumAgain · 03/02/2019 16:46

Don't forget to label anything you have at home if you have more than 1 size of baby clothes, incase your other half has to go back for more of anything.

CaseofEllen · 03/02/2019 17:21

Hi ladies! I'm so late to this but FTM due March 21st. Thought I'd pop on and say hello and congratulations!

Following with interest x

Hermagsjesty · 03/02/2019 17:23

Hope you’re all doing well. I’m feeling quite rough today - really suffering with pressure and aches. Although I think the worst part is wondering if it’s the start of something every time!! (36wks yesterday - have been having v strong Braxton Hicks for a few weeks but this feels like a different kind of pressure)

Wineandchoccy · 03/02/2019 17:33

@CaseofEllen welcome to the group and congratulations

melissa112 · 03/02/2019 17:37

@BadBadBeans that's nice of your MIL to sort the mould for you. Are you and your husband making that room into your room when baby is here? I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with anxiety recently. Waiting on your test result must be a worry. If you are still worried about the change on your nipple can you see another GP for a second opinion? Or the consultant who you are seeing regarding your results? It's reassuring that the GP wasn't concerned.

No suggestions for the keep busy box for your DS as I have no experience but the fact you are worrying about being good enough shows just what a great mum you are Flowers

OH and I had a sleepover on the sofa last night.. The bedroom still smelled a bit of chlorine from the mould remover despite the window open all day as we have a big corner sofa he said he'd stay downstairs with me. Wasn't the comfiest night sleep but thought it was nice of him. Room still smells mildly of it now so have the windows open again but I guess worst case scenario is sleeping on the sofa again tonight. Not ideal but sure the smell will go soon. Trying not to let myself spiral into worry. On my anxiety course it asks me to categorise worries into real or hypothetical, and if real can I do something about it, and if so, what is the solution. So I guess it's a real worry but I can sleep on the sofa as a solution for now so just to do that and not worry otherwise.

All the tips on the pads/big knickers etc are really useful. Was meant to go out today and sort all the stuff but OH is unwell with man flu so we've had a sofa day.

@AssumeItWasSomethingClever sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell. I'd definitely call in sick, main thing is that you recover and rest is the best way.

@CaseofEllen hi and welcome Smile how are you finding your pregnancy? Is this your first?

Gronk27 · 03/02/2019 17:42

@cardboard33 sorry, new mattress is sat in the lounge now. Waiting for DH to get the Next to Me out of the loft so I can steam it and wash the sheets and get it ready just in case. Did you find Next to Me sheets on offer? Sorry to hear about your complication.

melissa112 · 03/02/2019 18:38

Had a mini anxiety victory just now. I've been really worried about eating fruit, veg and potatoes incase there is some dirt left on and I get toxoplasmosis. I have been eating veg but only cooked and no fruit. Also haven't eaten a cherry tomato in months because I couldn't get the dirt off one in early pregnancy. I've just eaten baked chicken with roasted cherry tomatoes, courgette, red onion and pepper and it was delicious. I did have to ask OH a few times to make sure veg was definitely really clean etc. Also at my antenatal class midweek they brought round quarters of orange and I had one without thought. Sounds so silly I know but it's the first time I've had fruit in months and my god I've been missing out. I know it's probably too late now at 34+3 but I'm going to try and ease myself back into it. I've been eating veg and still taking my pregnancy vitamins so hope baby has got what he's needed.

In baby news, after being in the hospital each day last week for monitoring as I had an episode of reduced movement last Monday, today I've really not felt baby as much as usual. He usually has a witching hour at 7pm ish which is when I arrived at the hospital last Monday with reduced movements and felt foolish because he was moving absolutely loads when they put me on the monitor. Movements been fine all week and the scan on Friday was good.

So just wondering what I do. I'm going to give it another hour or so and see if he moves at his usual time but I'm sure I normally feel much more throughout the day. Just know I'll get there and he'll probably be bouncing away (thank god) but that they won't take me seriously anymore?
