PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 11:37

I swear I just felt definite actual proper movement - sitting at my desk I felt a definite “shuffle” from in there.

I need to have a quick vent. I am under consultant care and had an appt last week. Have agreed to a CS due to 2 previous CS deliveries and I said to the consultant “all I want is to deliver at 40w this time, not 39 as that’s when DS was born and he struggled to breathe at birth and the debrief basically concluded he came out too early”.

Absolute refusal. The consultant basically said as they do not know what my womb is like that she’s not prepared to risk me starting labour spontaneously as the risk of scar rupture is raised with every CS (I know) and 39w is term.

I feel upset and not listened to AGAIN. It happened the last time with a different consultant who was pushing me for a VBAC as DD was EMCS’d at 42w due to absolute failure to progress. I was nervous about it and was made to feel like a lazy twat for wishing to have an EMCS.

With hindsight I wish I’d gone for an ELCS at 41w like I wanted.

This time I am trying to be reasonable at request an ELCS at 40w.

Now I’m all befuddled and actually now very scared re delivery. I’m upset at yet another consultant just not bloody listening and dismissing my fears, experiences and clinical feedback. I am sick of my nites being read back to me with every time something mentioned that’s news to me.

Are any of you looking into a Doula or a Private Midwife? Are any of you thinking about a VBAC?

I’m going to start a thread on this anyway some time in due course but I feel like I know my body, I know my babies, I know my maternal history (42&43w gestations normal for female relatives) and I’m at my wits end now.

Reastie · 27/12/2018 11:46

Paul that is infruriating. I was going to say maybe with dc 2 the dates were a bit off so you thought you were 39 weeks but actually may have been earlier but given your history of late term births sounds like your body just wants to keep them in as long as possible! So, the fact is they won’t let you do a vbac because of risks of rupture and so having to have a csection? Did you have very quick births when you weren’t in labour? I’m assuming not if you ended in csection? It’s just innthe unlikelt event you did go into labour chances of it suddenly progressing quickly before you could get to the hospital to have a csection.... sounds like it’s a doctor who thinks he knows better. Can you ask for a second opinion or pay private? I had a csection last time and will request one this time. They can try and push me as much as they like into a vbac but I’ve done a lot of research and truly believe for me it’s the right option. What would the hospital actually do if you refused csection at 39 weeks I wonder? Do you have the power to say you’d like to go against the consultant and would they do it? That’s thinking out loud, I don’t know the answers, I’m just wondering. Sounds like a case of consultant going with the one size fits all and not taking into account the individual situation. I guess be reassured that they are doing what they believe is the best for you and your baby. If your last dc had breathing issues because of being early could you meet in the middle with a csection at 39 weeks but would they do the injection they can give whilst you’re still pg to encourage the breathing to develop earlier. I forget the name of it (steroid?) but it’s given before the actual birth I think.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/12/2018 12:16

Basically here’s what happened

DD: failed induction, 100 hours of monitoring nothing and then CS. The best CS ever by the way. Very happy experience good recovery.

DS: ELCS at 39w. I didn’t question the timing. As there was absolutely zero progression with DD it made sense to me to have an ELCS. I didn’t go for VBAC as quite frankly I was scared. After he was born struggling after a very long and rough op the consultant shrieked “madam are you sure your dates are right??”. No question they were. Scary and upsetting.

So having those experiences (one goodish one bad) I’m sure you can see why my head is in bits.

@reastie you have it bang on thus:

“sounds like a case of the consultant going with a one size fits all approach”

Too right. She was NOT having it when I proposed waiting for 40w AT ALL.

I have to speak to someone else about this - someone who will listen and make me feel understood but I’ve no idea where to turn next.

alibongo9 · 27/12/2018 12:21

Hello, first time on Mumsnet and wondering if its ok to join the group chat? First time pregnant - due date 16th June. Eeek!

I'm an older first time mum (39) so probably a bit more nervous than usual. It's good to hear comments from others in the same boat! Especially as all my sickness and symptoms have stopped so it's the nervous wait until the 20-week scan, which feels like ages away!

Reastie · 27/12/2018 12:22

PaulHollywood ask for a second opinion, you are entitled to it, and maybe see your mw first to discuss it with her as she might have some ideas.

Reastie · 27/12/2018 12:23

Xposted, welcome and congrats Ali

fee1234 · 27/12/2018 13:00

@alibongo9 welcome!

Just checking in, I've also started feeling movements. 17+3 today and have my '16 week' midwife appointment later as we were away last week.

Feel like it's taking me absolute ages to get over this cold, almost 2 weeks with it now. Hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying the festive season x

MadeInCornwallx3 · 27/12/2018 14:14

@sk17 Haha I got all excited I had a due date buddy and then read the next post 😂

@Reastie Yep she's due the start of June basically 3 months behind me. So exciting. They've not been trying for long either but she is 36 and has a 7 year old DD so it's so lovely for them.

@alibongo9 Welcome and congratulations!

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut that sounds awful. I def second the idea to ask for a second opinion, I'm sure they have to give you that, it's your body! Fingers crossed you can get all this sorted soon and won't need to worry anymore.

@fee1234 yay to movements! I want to feel too (17 weeks tomorrow) but although she couldn't say for sure at my 16 week gender scan they thought my placenta might be anterior. That's all three I reckon! Angry

MadeInCornwallx3 · 27/12/2018 14:15

@Reastie I obviously mean start of September but must have June on the brain 😂

Reastie · 27/12/2018 14:24

I knew what you meant made Wink . That’s really exciting for you. I don’t think I know anyone in rl pg atm (that I know of) so have been living vicariously through googling pg celebs Blush

PaulHollywood another thing that came to mind is if you find it’s a hospital policy would you consider going to another hospital where they might have different policies where they may be more happy to wait till 40 weeks?

Fee I hope you feel better soon, colds can hang around can’t they.

coastergirl · 27/12/2018 14:25

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut could you check if One to One midwives are available in your area? I used them last time. Even though I'm not their usual patient (they do a lot of home births), my midwife was basically an amazing advocate for me. She came to consultant appointments and had it agreed and written into my notes things like my husband being allowed to stay with me on the postnatal ward due to my anxiety. It's much harder for a consultant to refuse to listen to you if you have a medical professional backing you up.

Bimbabo · 27/12/2018 17:06

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut .... it is the right of everyone to chose how to give birth. If you do not consent to anything, including things like a BP check, it can not be forced on you.

This is my first pregnancy and I want an elective section. I discussed with my consultant and he made other suggestions that were good to discuss through, and then told me ultimately all individuals have the right to choose and if I want a section that’s what he’ll do. We’ve not discussed dates of this yet. I was pleased when I went to my 16 week midwife appointment it was already documented that I will have a section.

You can get a second opinion at the same hospital and if you feel it’s warranted then you can ask for a different health trust to review your case. You would go through your GP for that I believe.

Hope this helps xxx

@MadeInCornwallx3 I've gone shopping mad today, spent a lot but saved even more so quite pleased with myself! Bought some cute gender neutral clothes for pennies, half price baby bottles, pregnancy/baby pillow, nursing bras and a dirt cheap lovely arm chair for the nursery. I would highly recommend mothercare, mamas and papas and Sainsburys at the moment x

MadeInCornwallx3 · 27/12/2018 18:31

@rollerskaterdata Oooh sounds good! I've been looking at JoJo Bebe too. Some lovely half price stuff.

I wish we hadn't spent all our money at Christmas now haha 😂

Napssavelives · 27/12/2018 19:23

Have anyone of the Bristol ladies done any pregnancy yoga before? Trying to find a class

allfurcoatnoknickers · 27/12/2018 19:29

Hi there, I'd like to join in! I'm expecting my first baby on June 11th. I'm a Brit, but an expat in the US, so having a great time navigating the US health system Confused.

Having a very rough time of it so far, I'm still nauseous all the time, and throwing up on the regular, and that's with the hardcore drugs....

Torsz · 27/12/2018 19:42

@Napssavelives I haven't, I looked into it but it was so expensive and I'm planning on starting aqua natel soon which is £12 per session so I couldn't justify both! I am doing body balance though, and they've taught me all the pregnancy modifications ☺️

Reastie · 27/12/2018 19:48

Just to say body balance fans they have lots of body balance workouts on les mills on demand. I used to subscribe and loved it. A lot of them have specific person doing the pg modifications. They usually have a new user free trial of a month or so. Great to do from the comfort of your living room!

If anyone finds any good pg yoga routines free online please let me know, I’ve looked on you tube but can’t find anything that inspires me.

WeeBean · 27/12/2018 19:49

Welcome to the newbies!

Sorry you're still ill Reastie, hopefully this week is the turnaround week, are you 14 weeks tomorrow?

We've just caved a booked a gender scan for next Saturday. It was mostly because I'm eager to see the heartbeat and hear that all is good again but now it's booked I'm so excited to find out what we're having a month earlier than we thought we would.

Reastie · 27/12/2018 19:53

found this nhs pg yoga video and it actually looks quite good. V relaxing and not too many flow moves.

Weebean I’m 14+2 today

Blondcat · 27/12/2018 19:59

There is a pregnancy yoga video on amazon prime video Tara somebody can't remember her name but I tried out the first 3 the other day they focus on one area per session. Seems OK so far.

Reastie · 27/12/2018 20:12

Ohh thanks blondcat, I have amazon prime. I’ve also just joined Netflix, I wonder if they do that kind of thing too

CrazyCowLady · 27/12/2018 21:35

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut sorry you have had a bad time with consultant. Was is an actual consultant you saw? Or a registrar (one below consultant)? If it was a reg, definitely ask for another consultant appointment where you see your named consultant. Your midwife should be able to sort this out, or you can probably ring Antenatal Clinic. If it was your consultant, ask to see another.

If you see them again, tell them you are upset and anxious due to your previous experience (with consultant and with previous birth). They really should listen to you. I think you can have a look at scar rupture rates per section (they are very low and only increase marginally per section) to help your argument. That if you did go in labour before 40 weeks, the rupture rate would be low and you can have a section anyway. It will be a bit more of a drama than if you had an elective, but considering you haven't really laboured before, I can't imagine your body suddenly going 0-60 in a few hours. And with your family history for 42/43 week pregnancies!!

If your last section was 'difficult' in terms of getting babe out, that is probably what led to him needing help breathing. With ELCS, some babies can come out a little shocked, as they haven't had the hormonal prompts or contractions to get them ready to breath. (A bit like a backwards version of us being pushed into a swimming pool without being told!) Unless your DS looked prem, it was likely the dr having a bit of a panic at the time and worrying you more than needed.

Re doula or private midwife- they will be helpful to help you feel supported and might have extra 'sway' when talking to consultant. Otherwise, if your hospital has 'Caseload Midwives', ask to be put under their team. Same midwife at each appt, who is usually on call for you too.

You used to be able to talk to a Supervisor of Midwives about things like this, but SOM's have been removed and replaced with something else (I cant remember what they are called!). If there is a Consultant Midwife in your trust, they should be available for a chat and a plan about it too.

Can't think of anything else else atm, but if I do, I'll let you know! Fingers crossed you get the birth you want.

(Bit of a disclaimer: I used to be a midwife. Quit about 3 years ago so things might have changed, but thats what I would have tried to do for my women) x
