HIWBB - hope all goes well for DH

Emlou - hope you get the car sorted!

Filbrit - hello, nice to have you back xx

Saw the midwide yesterday and expressed my concerns re baby seems to be very low and all kicks are below tummy button and i seem much smaller than last time and she measured me to be only 1cm more than 3 weeks ago so i was sent to the hospital this morning. She also couldn't work out the position of the baby and said it didn't seem to be filling much of my tummy.

Consultant listened to heartbeat and felt position to be head down and 2/5 engaged! He said this was the reason my bump appeared small because the baby was in my pelvis. He scaned to confirm position and said he thinks all seems fine. He didn't have eqipment available to measure baby so we're going back for a growth scan in 2 weeks to find out the size and be reassured. I'm concerned the baby is engaging at 31 wks and asked if that means the baby could be early and he said he wouldn't like to say but it is unusual for baby to engage now in a second pregnancy when it's still got room!

dal21 · 17/07/2007 12:37

HIWBB - hope your DH is ok.

Hope everyone else is ok. Can I ask - what is termed as low blood pressure, I am never sure what the ranges of low, normal, high are.

willjo · 17/07/2007 17:17

Holly29 - I have always had low blood pressure and it has remained low throughout this pregnancy. My midwife has said that blood pressure changes from normal, high or low throughout the course of a pregnancy and having low blood pressure is more of an inconvenience than anything to be worried about. Standing still is not good, so if you have to be still, make sure you jig around - always gets a few eyebrows raised
Also from 26-28 weeks onwards your body has 50% more blood to pump around and so getting enough Iron is really important - there is a natural source of Iron called Spatone (you can get it from Health food shops) it is much kinder on your stomach than tablets etc. If you put it in some fruit juice it helps your body to absorb it much easier, this should also help your blood pressure. Other than that make sure you snack often (apricots are good - iron), drink lots of water and rest with you legs up - like you need any encouragement
I hope this helps and your low blood pressure doesn't cause anymore bother.

Holly29 · 17/07/2007 17:21

Willjo

That's totally fabulous advice, thanks so much. Am off to seek out some spatone.

Hope - am thinking of you. Hope all goes well. x

sophus · 17/07/2007 17:23

Holly29 With low blood pressure make sure you drink a lot as increases the volume of blood in your body, also eat little and often to keep your blood sugar up and rest a lot (if possible). It should start to go up a bit during last trimester - weeks 26-30 are worst for it apparently.

welcome back filbrit - can we have a tiny bit of warm , but not too hot sunshine here this way please.

FioFioJane · 17/07/2007 17:24

I am borderline anaemic and started taking spatone lasst week and it has already made a difference. Will see what the blood test shows in 3 weeks time

hope it wont bebig, what is your dh having done love? hope it all goes ok

TinaLC · 17/07/2007 17:57

HIWBB - hope your DH ok.

Holly - I also have low blood pressure and lots of water, dried apricots and either Spatone (from Boots in sachets) or Floradix from health food shops like Holland and Barrett (and which I find a bit easier taste-wise) have helped with iron and feeling faint.

Willjo - this is my first baby so my experience of hospitals is from my sister who had her first at Chelsea and second at Kingston and much preferred mid-wives at Kingston ....therefore I chose Kingston. Am using SL mid-wives and am with Teresa as my main mid-wife. I suffered epilepsy as a child/teenager and stress of child birth can bring it on apparently, so am hoping that a calm, stay at home environment will help in some way....we shall see!

Filbrit - welcome back and hope the air conditioning is keeping you sane.

Starting NCT next week which I hope will be good and looking forward to meeting other pregnant people as starting to feel a bit out of place now at work as I come to nearer my maternity leave and get bigger. My professionalism at work is really important to me and I have found just looking pregnant quite hard to reconcile with my work environmemt.....I know that sounds silly but it just seems to remind people you are overtly female and also that you have to take time out to have a baby. I am quite looking forward to spending a bit more time with mums and pregnant people and feeling a bit more at home. Sounds very daft but hope some of you know what I mean!

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 20:38

Hi all, thanks for messages of support. Saw DH's surgeon this evening so he filled us in. The surgery went better than last time. He's re-pinned the bones in his elbow, so hopefully they'll now start to heal. Problem is, until they heal fully, the joint fluid will just keep on leaking and this results in an open wound, unfortunately this in unavoidable. It's just astonishing that 9 months after his accident the bones are still as fractured as they were to begin with. Poor poor love, I do hope he is left alone for a while. He is SO unbelievably brave. He has gone through such an ordeal since November, and he never ever complains even though he is in constant pain.

Just imagine trying to function with just one arm. I've tried to do this, just to see what it must be like for him, and I always give up and use my right arm too.

Sorry ladies, feeling a bit and tearful. Must admit I'm scared about how he's going to cope/feel when this baby arrives. Considering he was SO hands on with our boys when they were newborn. I'm praying that it doesn't sadden him that he can't do as much this time.

Oh god, it's all doom and gloom this post. But seriously, we're going through a really crap thing, and most of the time we just get on with it, but I guess it's times like this that it just dawns on me what has actually happened to us and the reality of it all. Must admit feelings of anger right now at hit and run driver. SO SO SO SO SO SO unfair. WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING OF DRIVING LIKE THAT? I was going through some of the press stuff that was issued at the time of the accident and came across this which was released very soon after the accident. I guess it all seems quite surreal now.

Sorry sorry, having a proper full on rant. But I don't do it to this extent very often

dal21 · 17/07/2007 20:41

HIWBB - my goodness, had no idea that that was what happened to your DH! My goodness! Did they ever find the driver of the car?

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 20:44

No

OP posts:
Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 20:45

Bit rubbish innit

OP posts:
dal21 · 17/07/2007 20:51

Totally rubbish, how do people like that sleep at night?
I guess (although dozens of people have said this to you) - the important part is that your DH is ok (well ok-ish, think you know what i mean!). Sorry it is making you feel so unsettled with the baby on the way. Don't really know what to say except come and vent on here!

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 20:56

Thanks dal. Yes, this is the place to come and rant. Yes, you're right, he's alive and for that we're extremely thankful.. he was doing 70mph when he was knocked off, so he's very lucky to still be here. Also, this baby is truly as a direct result of the accident. DH didn't want to have a 3rd child, it was the accident that made him re-evaluate things. So for that I am also thankful.

OP posts:
dal21 · 17/07/2007 20:58

Yes he is lucky - but sounds as though he was sensible too - he must have had leathers on that protected him to some degree. And new bub I guess is the silver lining! Does he still ride after the accident or has he stopped?

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 21:03

Yes, he had all the gear on. We've kept his helmet, it was quite expensive, but well worth the money.... it has some very frightening scratches across the temple area. I do get cross with motorcyclists who don't wear the full gear, it's just craziness. The remarkable thing was, there wasn't a scratch on him, no broken skin, nothing! It was all internal. But just goes to show really. Sometimes I feel like the 'motorbike police' and have to force myself not to say anything to these fools!

Unfortunately (for him), he can't ride anymore. Basically the nerves that control his right arm were ripped out of his spinal cord. So he's been left with a complete paralysis to his right arm. I hated it every time he went out on his bike, I'd feel sick until he was home safe and sound.

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/07/2007 21:26

Off to bed now, feel better for getting that off my chest .

Hope everyone is ok. I started taking Spatone last week and it's made the world of difference. I go from being a breathless weak thing to my 'normal' self. Great stuff!

Night night. Thanks dal for listening (kiss kiss)

EmLouT · 17/07/2007 21:46

Hello all.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts about the car. I have contacted the insurance company so hopefully it will all get sorted out quite quickly.

Hopeitwontbebig - I can't believe what happened to your DH. I'm glad the surgery went well but I can't imagine how unsettling it must be. A good rant is often exactly what we need so rant away.

Hope everyone is well and reasonably comfortable.

dal21 · 18/07/2007 07:30

Morning all!

HIWBB - anytime! I have to agree with you; I see motorcyclists on the streets in shorts and tshirts and it drives me nuts! They drive round the north circ in london going up to 60 miles an hour and i fear for them! I would always have loved to have had a motorbike - but could never get past the fear of coming off.

EmLouT - sounds as though your insurance company are getting on with it - so hopefully you will have your new car by the time bub arrives.

Right - am off to get more paint from homebase. Getting lots of DIY done with my mums help - it's great! Hope everyone has a good day.

p.s. am loving loving loving the weather right now! such a lovely cooling breeze - helping me sleep really well!

MrsBumblebee · 18/07/2007 09:24

Hi all.

HIWBB - just wanted to add my best wishes to what everyone else has said. You and DH must be going through a horrible time. Hang in there, and vent whenever you like!

Dal - I know what you mean about the weather. Sunday was really hot and humid where I live, and it was the first time I've properly appreciated what people mean when they say how horrible it is to be heavily pregnant in the summer. I'm stopping work a week today , so fingers crossed it stays cool-ish until then.

EdieMcredie · 18/07/2007 09:31

HIWBB-Hopefully if the BMW driver has any sort of conscious he won't be able to sleep at night, although how anyone can drive off in the first place it totally beyond me. Nutter. Is there any chance he may regain feeling in time with physio and stuff or is it too badly damaged? How depressing for you, I think it sounds like you have both been very brvae.

Pennypops · 18/07/2007 09:38

Hi everyone,

Just been having a catch up. Hopey I'm glad that the surgery seems to have been successful and that the surgeon as very positve. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for both of you and how difficult it has been over the last few months since the accident. I can see that most of the time you just get on with it but you'd be super human if it didn't get you down sometimes. I read the BBC report and I think you've done so well not to become permanently angry and bitter about the injustice of it all. All I can say is vent as much as you like here!! xxxx

Filbrit - great to have you back. Good to hear you are settled in. Send a few rays this way will you?

Have read the posts about low blood pressure with interest as I nearly blacked out 3 times on Monday morning on a half hour train ride - despite being seated. All a bit peculiar really and a little unnerving. I called my midwife to see what could have caused it and to poss arrange to have my bp checked but she hasn't bothered to return my message. I have to call my GP if she hasn't called my 3.30pm today! Reassuring. Not. Anyway I have bought some glucose sweeties and carry those round now as I thought it may be a low blood sugar thing.

Tina - am with you on the work professionalism thing. I have tried to avoid customer meetings as I feel having a huge bump isn't really "corporate". Prob sounds silly and I am proud of it in every other way but I work in IT and many meetings are in the City and suits rule!!

Anyway, I hope you all have a good day - will check in again later. xxxx

amyclaramum · 18/07/2007 09:48

HIWBB - glad to hear the op was ok- just so sorry for you both and of course you are allowed to get down about it! When I read your post it put all my minor stresses of the day into perspective !
Hope you're feeling ok today ?

EmlouT - hope car gets sorted out quickly - did you mention you were pregnant ? We had a flood (burst water pipe)at home when I was expecting DD2 and as soon as they knew I was pg the Insurance Company pulled out all the stops !

Can't remember who asked about classes - but I have been to my first NCT refresher class ! It was really good and nice to meet some Mums having babies around the same time. Quite a few of them had even bigger age range of DC than me! I am quite keen to find out latest advice etc for birth as its been 6 years since DD2.

Have a nice day everyone !

MMooMar · 18/07/2007 13:00

Hi All,
Hope everyone is feeling OK.

HIWBB,Speedy recovery wishes to your other half.

Yikes Chattyhan,I imagine loads of rest is the order of the day but not that easy is it with a toddler running about all day, take care.

Welcome MrsB and Willjo, sorry its a late welcome.

Well not much to say really,DS and the dog have been driving me up the wall for the last couple of days, end of my tether is nigh.
Stuck in the bloody house cos of the weather again. To be honest I think it is probably more me than them, seem to have got into a habit of shouting at them recently.

Think I could do with a holiday...ha Fat chance!

Anyway moan over,Got some of the baby stuff out the loft to sort through.Cant believe the amount of clothes that werent even worn at all last time.Ok for vests even if its a girl as i have brought some new ones too so now have a total of 29 cream ,lemon and white ones!...and not a car in sight on any of them and thats just the 0-3 month sizes. If its another boy I think I have got enough to last a month without washing any even with twice a day change! Sorted out some prem clothes in neutrals as well just in case...hopefully they wont be needed, cant get over how small they are though. One thing,if its a girl got the clothes for any dolls that she has when shes older .

Still in limbo over the room theme, now looking at 2 of M&Ps nursery ranges,oh well might make my mind up soon.Still to order the pushchair too.....got loads of Mat pads though...thats all that matters!

Take care all
