Hello everyone

Pennypops, MrsMar I have also been painting like mad and i would never normally pick up a paint brush (DH is so much better at it than me as he even uses masking tape to get straight edges!) I started off just doing the bathroom ceiling but this has extended to walls, windows and I am going to do the front door a different colour. I thought this nesting malarky was a load of rubbish but it so isn't.

Thanks for all the helpful posts on clothes sizes as I was out on my first baby shopping trip in John Lewis yesterday and came away with nothing as was so confused about clothing sizes. Have just won a Wilkinet carrier on Ebay though so am feeling very chuffed.

Went to a very posh city wedding this weekend which was lovely but the only downside was my ex-husband was also there. This would have been fine as we are very civil as we were only married for 3 years when I was 21 and he now lives in Australia. BUT his partner (who he was having an affair with which is why we split up) decided to come over to me and gush on about "how thrilled they both were that I was pregnant and entering a new and happier stage of my life"!!!! Now I consider myself pretty calm and laid back but what bit of her brain thought I would appreciate this from her! Fortunately DH rushed over to rescue me muttering something about "always enjoying a good dance to ABBA at weddings" before dragging me off ...bless him! He said after that if someone drew a cartoon picture of someone with their jaw on the floor looking stunned I was the model for it.

Anyway, rant over, it was still a nice wedding but looking back it all seems slightly surreal. The baby then kicked me all night when I got home so I reckon I must have doused the poor thing with stress hormones (or danced too much to the ABBA tribute band!)

Have just read the featured thread on "what was the stupidest thing said to you when you were in labour (on the home page of Mumsnet in case you wonder what I am talking about). Can I just say for all first-time mums on this thread - do NOT read it or be prepared! I laughed out loud but also terrified myself at the same time.

Pennypops · 09/07/2007 13:36

Tina I've just been catching up on that thread (first looked at it Friday) and I think its great. Even though I am a 1st timer and some of the more gory stories could be considered scary I take great comfort from the fact that even though some of the contributors had a rough time of it they and their babies have all been ok in the end.

I am already prepping myself for scenarios such as hospital turning me away as they are full or midwives not being massively helpful. It isn't ideal but I think that you have to work with what you've got.

TinaLC · 09/07/2007 13:56

Totally agree Pennypops - didn't mean to sound negative as I thought it was a great thread....just warts and all.

Maybe I was just hoping to hold onto a tiny shred of dignity at birth and now know this is truely not going to be possible!

dal21 · 09/07/2007 13:57

Nettie - with you on the envy re. maternity leave already starting ..still have another 6 weeks to go (although have next week off so temporary light mid tunnel for me!)

Welcome MrsB, there are so many of us due in sept - losing track of who is due near me(28th....right at the end).....is there a stats thread somewhere, remember reading about it!

MrsFish · 09/07/2007 14:01

I'm due on the 30th

Pennypops · 09/07/2007 14:32

Tina I understand where you are coming from! Any illusions I had about dignity were well and truly shattered when I had quite a lot of random bleeding episodes in 2nd trimester - I've already had what felt like roomfuls of people peering up my lady bits!! Just lovely.

Rin23 · 09/07/2007 14:36

hello all!

Thanks for good wishes PLP, MrsMar, Kinki. Baby's been kicking manically this weekend so am assuming all is good and my grazes are healing nicely. Sorry to hear about some of your with painful ribs. Like you, MrsMar, I've not felt any high kicking at all - all quite low down. Not sure what this means either - midwife said baby was head down?

Quick question - Someone mentioned getting hair coloured - it is ok to get hair highlighted whilst pg? I want to get my roots done for a wedding in August but wasn't sure about whether it's ok - there seems to be mixed reports on web and although I'd probably go for it, it would be rather humiliating if the hairdresser refuses to do it.

Loving hearing about everyone's purchases and preparations. I've bought a random selection of stuff - but all babygrows/ vests. No "outfits" as such - mainly because I'm due Sept 21 and have no idea what weather will be like - all outfits in shops are summer clothes (albeit gorgeous ones!).

Also very jealous of mat leave starters... I have 7 weeks to go and counting...

Pennypops · 09/07/2007 15:05

Hi Rin,

I think that hair colouring is fine these days - they use much lower concentrations of chemicals than they used to. Also, highlights don't usually touch the scalp anyway so crack on! Your hairdresser really shouldn't refuse.

Holly29 · 09/07/2007 15:23

Sophus - totally sympathise re: stressful job. Sounds like foot rub was great though!

I went for an appointment this morning and they told me that my baby was measuring a bit small so I have to have an extra growth scan in two weeks to see if the wee one is progressing OK. He was moving around like crazy so they were not too worried that he was not getting enough food! Am a bit worries but will hopefully be OK. They actually wrote 'very active baby' on my maternity notes so hopefully it is OK...

love to all.

Holly29 · 09/07/2007 15:24

I meant to say Dal, I am due on the 27th so very near you!

EdieMcredie · 09/07/2007 15:24

Nettee-you and all others that are still at work have my sympathy-I just don't think I could have done for it much longer although my job is quite stressful. Probably could have carried on doing something a little less hands on! Going to do some of my mystery shopping work. Thats quite easy...

Rin23 · 09/07/2007 15:26

cool, thanks Pennypops!

dal21 · 09/07/2007 15:29

Hoorah - Mrs Fish and Holly can keep the thread alive as the others pop off to pop out!

sophus · 09/07/2007 15:40

Just as things were looking up, my mother just rang and is being admitted to hospital tomorrow for an emergency op. I'd be worried at the best of times but now i'm a total mess. And she is obviously scared and trying not to let it show and doesn't want us to come with her.
Me and DP had enormous row this morning and i said some really unforgivable things and now this has happened and put it totally in the shade. Soon as it happened he came round to my office and picked me up and brought me home.

Just want some balance in my life?

xx

Rin23 · 09/07/2007 15:47

Sophus - really sorry to hear about your mum, no wonder you are a mess, it's such a worry. don't think about what you said to DP - negative words pale into insignificance at times like this. Loads of luck to your mum for the op tomorrow, and try and stay calm and strong for your mum and the baby.
xx

Pennypops · 09/07/2007 16:03

Oh Sophus honey I'm so sorry this has happened. Echo what Rin says about staying calm.
Wishing you and your mum the very best. xx

SeamonstEr · 09/07/2007 16:28

Same here sophus, hope all goes well.

You people moaning about maternity leave, if you are first timers grrrrrr at you, you will have a few weeks all to yourself

if you're not then um good.

I am eating a box of maltesers as we speak so may get a bit silly with a chocolate high as I don't eat chololate much.

Are you all taking note of my advise out taking it all as it comes? I certainly hope so, like I said my moments of wisdom are few and far between...
[just want to feel appreciated] boo hoo

MrsFish · 09/07/2007 17:00

To all you first timers... No maternity leave for me

Just you wait till you are on your second child

FioFioJane · 09/07/2007 17:01

I break up from work ina fortnight, the same time my two oldest break up from school for six weeks

what fun!

MrsFish · 09/07/2007 17:02

Sophus - hope everything goes well with your mum, I know it is a stressful time, went through it with my dad during my first child.

amyclaramum · 09/07/2007 17:06

Sophus- sorry about your Mum. Hope all goes well tomorow.

SeaMonster(oh wise one !) - did you say your lo was transverse ? Mine is (although I am still getting really bad heartburn) and the Gp is sending me for another scan to check position in a couple of weeks. Do you have any advice on getting the baby to move round into the right pos ?

Hi to the new girls - there is a stats thread you can add your details to. I am expecting my 3rd on Sept 1st and have 2 DD age 8 and 5 already.

Love to everyone else ! Hope aches and pains , heartburn and cramps all under control ?

SeamonstEr · 09/07/2007 17:31

yes, at 30 weeks baby is transverse, although when I go to the midwife on monday things may have changed. dd was transverse at this point but she moved into the right position. I've only heard stuff like sitting upright and getting on your hands and knees [although that may be breech]
If I'm still transverse on Monday I'll ask m/w but I don't think there's anything to worry about just yet.
Are you a couple of weeks ahead of me? Perhaps I'll get a scan to check too?
I'm sorry you're getting heartburn though, I had it with dd [when she turned] and it's not nice. read everyone elses advise below for that..
I'm hoping to catch up with hopey at some point today. she's avoiding me.

Chattyhan · 09/07/2007 17:42

Rin23 and MrsMar i'm only feeling low kicks too and i remember having so much rib ache last time so i got out my diary from the last pregnancy and it was around 32 wks i was complaining most so still time!

rin23 i had my hair highlighted last pregnancy they checked the development more often as it can develop more quickly during preg. Can't afford find the time to do it anymore!

Holly29 - my friend has this recently and everything was fine they were just being cautious.

Sophus - sorry to hear about your mum don't worry about bad words said to DP I agree with rin about the insignificance thing

amyclaramum - tips for getting lo into position - lean forward (try sitting backwards on a dining chair and propping with cushions) also prop cushions behind back when on sofa to avoid slouching. Also on all fours (don't dip your back) creates a hammock for lo and encourages to change position. Can rest head on hands on cushions if you wish. Hope this helps

FioFioJane · 09/07/2007 17:43

I am sure my baby is transverse too. My bump is a very odd shape. It doesnt matter yet surely?

Rin23 · 09/07/2007 17:47

thanks for info Chattyhan - good to know re highlights - don't wanna end up looking like a punk! (not for the wedding anyway).

Also good to hear about kicks - at least, not good exactly to hear about rib pain, but sounds as though we're normal!
