I have always put socks and sleepsuits on together, except with ds2 who was born in a hot July and only wore socks. I'd get a few pairs, if lo has cold feet use them if not use them as scratch mits.
I am obviously full of wisdom tonight.
Make the most of it, it won't [can't] last.

dal21 · 06/07/2007 18:37

ok then seamonster am going to take advantage of said wisdom

i am slightly confused by 'newborn' clothing and 0-3 months clothing. Obv i know it depends on how big the baby is when it is born as to whether newborn clothing is needed. Is it worth buying one cheapo set (you know the pack of 5's) in newborn and everything else in 0-3? or did people just go buy 0-3? I look at the newborn things and think they will only fit for 5 mins. does that make them a waste of money or am i being cheap?

help me oh wise one!

MrsFish · 06/07/2007 18:40

I have bought 3 outfits for newborn, they should fit for a couple of weeks, then I have all of DS1's 0-3 month stuff to use after

kinki · 06/07/2007 18:45

Our smallest stuff was/is 0-3 months, but prepare dh/p for a dash to mothercare or other if your baby is small. Dh had to do this as ds1 was

dal21 · 06/07/2007 18:47

Welcome EmLou - am fairly new on here too! congrats on your pregnancy! Is this your first??

Thanks Mrs Fish - so as I thought - few things in newborn size. I keep getting tempted by some lovely (expensive) baby clothes, but seeing how little time they will be able to wear them - cannot justify buying them! In all your experiences - where does the best quality baby clothing that is reasonably priced and wears well. I saw some stuff in mothercare. anywhere else worth looking?

SeamonstEr · 06/07/2007 18:47

Nods graciously.

If you have lots of friends and family they will probably buy you the bigger sizes to be helpful. So I'd get the newborn sizes in vest and sleepsuits, and perhaps mix and match with a few 'pieces' rather than a whole wardrobe.
To be honest little ones seem more comfortable in sleepsuits anyway, but those clothes are so irresistable.

SeamonstEr · 06/07/2007 18:49

Next, tesco and asda are all pretty good for quality, price and the sizes are 'good' sizes. IYSWIM

kinki · 06/07/2007 18:50

I found M&S and BHS to be quite good too.

dal21 · 06/07/2007 18:52

thanks guys - all is much clearer now!

SeamonstEr · 06/07/2007 18:54

[nods graciously]

its why we're here

[stares into space with a calm smile]

MrsMar · 06/07/2007 18:57

Dal, I'm so there on the temptation of buying cute expensive clothes they'll wear for a nanosecond! I keep seeing really sweet teeshirts (my current fav being one that says "lock up your daughters"!) but am desperately trying to resist the urge!

Thanks for advice re: socks seamonster. I've had a hunt around and can't really see any, but I'll keep looking.

I've got a couple of newborn things, pretty cheap ones tbh, and the majority of stuff is 0-3 months. My grandmother is buying most of Mothercare at the moment, and she seems to keep buying 3-6 months which is fine by me, but it's pretty summery stuff, and he'll be 3-6 months over winter. She won't be told though, bless her! It's quite hard to find wintery stuff now for 3-6 months, I was hoping to buy some things now while I'm still earning.

EmLouT · 06/07/2007 19:05

Hi,

I was just wondering about the new born / 0-3 months debate myself this afternoon. The newborn stuff looks so small! I am trying to resist the urge to buy lots of cute but expensive things. John Lewis is good for multipacks of sleep suits etc. Since this is my first baby, I have not idea what he will need and how many times I will have to change his clothes in a day.

toadstool · 06/07/2007 19:09

I gallumph gnome-like out of heartburn purgatory to say that DD surprised us all by being smaller than expected, so she spent a nanosecond (about a month) in tiny baby size, and what seemed like 6 months in newborn/0-3, because some newborn stuff is 0-3 months in disguise, and she was petite anyway. Example: we were given a lovely knitted cardi for her birth in Feb, she wore it in July. It came in useful then, mind. FWIW, Primark, H and M and Boots baby wear seemed to be for babies with very long legs and arms, so she didn't wear 0-3 until she was 6 months or so.

sophus · 06/07/2007 19:09

Went to Waitrose on way home and very nice checkout lady asked me how i was so i did the only rational thing and burst into tears. Being tired when you're pregnant just makes it impossible to cope with anything even being asked a simple question like how are you.
But off to have hair done tomorrow then pick up cot and buggy tomorrow so hopefully that will cheer me up.
Hoping i will be aslepp on the sofa within next ten minutes.

EmLouT · 06/07/2007 19:13

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is crying at the drop of a hat. I think my better half thinks I am mad. I just wish I could get a proper night's sleep instead of being kept awake with heartburn. Any suggestions?

dal21 · 06/07/2007 19:17

Lol seasmonster

MM - have come to the conslusion that handful of things in newborn sized - most definitely not expensive or extensive. couple of 0-3 outfits.

Think will wait on other stuff til i know what we are having. dont want to buy everything in white or cream!!

I may indulge in a couple of nightgowns i say online tho! they look gorgeous!

look at poppett

and then i saw this ridiculously expensive blanket which i wouldnt buy - but it looks beautiful!
look at puku

and this stuff is simply the loveliest stuff i have seen
look at gordonsbury

told you i loved some expensive stuff. PFB what can i say???

wont buy any of it - if after i live with reality of baby throwing up/ pooing all over clothes - i still think these are a good idea, i may indulge in a treat!

dal21 · 06/07/2007 19:20

Ah sophus! bless! are you feeling ok now?

emlou - havent had heartburn yet but you are two weeks ahead of me. does it help if you eat lightly at nighttime? for the last few weeks i have only been able to face a couple of slices of toast when i get in from work and i wonder if that has helped avoid it?

i also read that propping yourself up can alleviate it.

EmLouT · 06/07/2007 19:26

Thanks dal. I've heard that eating earlier helps but dh doesn't usually get in until late. I guess I'll just have to eat without him.

MrsFish · 06/07/2007 19:27

EmLouT - Remegel or Renee chewy sweets tend to sort me out, although I am getting through an awful lot, DH says I ought to buy shares in the company

dal21 · 06/07/2007 19:30

EmLou - you are better than me! During the week, i never get to eat dinner with DH. I am in from work at 6.30 and have always eaten supper early. he doesnt get in til 8. if i ate the same time as him, i wouldnt be able to sleep. defo try eating earlier. that little extra time of letting your dinner settle could help.

SeamonstEr · 06/07/2007 19:32

[leans down from on high]

It depends on how often you do washing. I would be doing at least one load of clothes everyday anyway so I will be fine with say 7 of each [vests and sleepsuits] and i'm not afraid to tumble dry. actually if you do run out a size bigger won't hurt now will it?

I am currently experiencing a most uncharacteristic sense of wisdom and calm at the moment. Give it time and I will be back to my usual moaning, angry sad happy self. Don't be too hard on yourselves.

[leans back on cloud]

sophus · 06/07/2007 19:33

Tried chocolate brownie therapy and that worked for a while.
Just got lots of stuff going on from ill mother to uber-stressful job via world's feistiest kitten and permanently irritated DP. Sure it will all be better with some sleep and sunshine.
Ironically up until today had a good week of sleep and yoga and feeling vaguely in control of it all.

SeamonstEr · 06/07/2007 19:35

it comes and goes doesn't it?

about heartburn, i don't have alot of experience with it [smug] but i the advice from the others sounds correct.

proceed.

dal21 · 06/07/2007 19:38

chocolate brownies always put the world to rights. even better slightly warm with green and black vanilla icecream! yum!

sorry to hear about your mum. is she nearby? well sunshine should be coming this weekend; if its nice, I plan to get lots of fresh air and go for a nice walk with DH on the heath near us.

dal21 · 06/07/2007 19:39

thanks seamonster - keep the wisdom with you! tis much help
