I think sometimes you just have to be pragmatic with these things. I remember sitting in the back on the way home from hospital, watching his breathing all the way!

Celebelly · 09/10/2018 20:31

Btw we got our car seat for about £80 off (black only but I didn't care about the colour) from www.discountbabyequip.co.uk/ and their customer service was excellent (I ordered the wrong thing at first so called in a panic and got a very nice man who dealt with it all. The correct car seat arrived a couple of days after ordering). Worth checking v some of the bigger outlets as I only found it by accident.

Yakadee · 09/10/2018 20:35

@welshweasel - that was me! Exactly lol x

Celebelly · 09/10/2018 20:36

That will be me too!

I remember when I was a kid and got my first hamster and even when it fell asleep I was pressed up against the cage watching it breathe Grin and then poking it to make sure it was OK.

bubblybrit · 09/10/2018 20:40

@hayley013. The itching is so annoying! Seems to be not as angry looking today so hoping it’s settling down a bit.

lanalawr · 09/10/2018 20:44

@welshweasel me too! My next challenge is to find an erf seat that DH can drive in front of. Could be quite a challenge as DH is 6'5" and couldn't drive in front of a maxi cosi pebble or two way pearl on recline. I'm liking the look of the Axkid Move if it'll fit but have to find time to go to Bristol to check it out. Thanks for the tights tip too!

@Celebelly Which can be handy to check things but it's worth being aware that they have marked down car seats that have passed the very stringent Swedish Plus Test because they found them difficult to install (but if they're fitted right they're considered excellent car seats).

@welshweasel I sat in the back with my newborn on the way home from the hospital too. It's less than a five minute drive though. 😆

lanalawr · 09/10/2018 20:44

Major bold fail sorry!

Celebelly · 09/10/2018 20:51

I'm really hoping that the combo of north of Scotland, winter and 45-mins drive to the hospital doesn't become an issue in a few months time!

That's interesting about the Which stuff, thanks! I usually use it for appliances because I am a gigantic nerd/control freak and can't buy anything without researching the everliving feck out of it. And because I weirdly enjoy the magazine every month Blush

Since2016 · 09/10/2018 20:53

I sat in the back with newborn DD 😂 this time we’ll just have to risk it as we can’t fit two car seats plus an adult in the back (I mean technically we might be able to but not after a c section!)

@yakadee that would drive me insane this is bad enough!!

Also want to kill my dog who just woke up DD. Heaven help me with two!

Since2016 · 09/10/2018 20:54

Yeah I didn’t find which that helpful tbh but I wanted ERF which they weren’t that clear on at the time

Lookingforadvice123 · 09/10/2018 20:56

welshweasel is it seriously 30 mins max for a baby in a car seat?! That's ridiculous! It was 2 hours when DS was a newborn less than 3 years ago!

I can recommend the Joie spin 360 car seat. DS was too big for his newborn car seat (cyber Aton) by 10 months, and the Joie one we have kept him rear facing until almost 2. It probably could've been longer if he didn't have such long legs / we had a bigger car. I think he'll only be in it until around age 4 though and then we'll have to get another, so it's not particularly cost effective.

Celebelly · 09/10/2018 20:56

I'm really curious as to what my dog will make of the baby! She's met babies and kids before and adores them (and people of any description) but it'll be funny seeing her around one for more than an hour or two at a time. She's such a gentle girl but she does enjoy stealing socks, soft toys, blankets, and anything she can drag to her bed. She's already eyeing up a soft toy that my mum bought for the baby!

I think the cats will be mainly disgusted and avoid at all costs.

twiglet · 09/10/2018 21:00

I did not know the 30 minute rule for newborns!

We are 30 minutes if there is zero traffic and good weather.... Like Celebelly North Scotland so that's unlikely in Feb!

Thanks ladies we were thinking of getting a second car seat which lays flat anyway as family live in the south so think this just seals it for us.

welshweasel · 09/10/2018 21:02

Yeah which aren’t brilliant for car seat advice, particularly for extended rear facing seats.

powkin · 09/10/2018 21:18

I might sound really thick, but how am I meant to get the baby home without a car? Do I need to buy a car seat to go in a taxi?!

welshweasel · 09/10/2018 21:20

Yes, you’ll need a car seat to go in the taxi. Infant seats can generally belt in without a base. The joie juva or the maxi cosi cabriofix would be cheap ish options. Or you could get a bus with the pram? Not sure how far it is?

Fredthespider · 09/10/2018 21:35

Thanks for the advice @welshweasel, I joined the group and it seems that the car seat that comes with the set isn't that bad. The admin say that it performed well in the ADAC crash testing and most of the negatives were to do with things like thin fabric and pollutants. One main negative was that the seat isn't stable, but we plan on getting the isofix base so that should help.

Surprisedmom · 09/10/2018 21:38

I didn’t know the 30 minute rule either. Makes the fact they’re closing all the midwife units in our county except two, which are more than 45 minutes away from me (and i’m nowhere near the most remote in the county) even more ridiculous. I mean it’s about 45 minutes down seriously windy country roads, in February with ice or snow it’s a lot longer.

Since2016 · 09/10/2018 22:11

Yep 30 min rule although a ridiculous number of people use the car seat as a pram!

Oh and remember to take the newborn insert out - poor DD had it in hers for months before I realised! She lasted in hers till around 15 months despite being so long - she was slight though. Isofix does make clipping in and out a dream

Lookingforadvice123 · 09/10/2018 22:17

Have to admit I raise my eyebrows at a lot of the "rules", especially as they seem to change every 5 mins. 30 mins, seriously? How is that realistic for a lot of people. I've also always thought 6 months is a very long time to have the baby in with you, especially as the risk of SIDS peaks in month 2 then drops right down afterwards.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 09/10/2018 22:27

I think we’ve decided on the M&P ocarro travel system. Due to the car seat rules though, I shan’t bother with a matching car seat. The isofix are handy, but it holds the seat in a rigid way, with seatbelt fixings you can adjust the car seat for a comfier fit for babies.

Also, with the 30 minute rule, just stop for a 5-10 minute break if your journey is longer than that... personally I hate to see babies in car seats unnecessarily, even when I had my older kids. They look so cramped and squashed up 😕

Celebelly · 09/10/2018 22:31

I'm usually quite relaxed about stuff, but I've done a lot of reading about the car seat stuff and the risks of young babies sitting inclined and the pressure it puts on their airways and it's not something I'm personally comfortable risking, particularly as there's a way to avoid it now with the lie-flat seats if you habitually do longer journeys. But I think we all have to find our balance somewhere and weigh up what is important to us and do our research. There will be some stuff I'm comfortable with that are hard passes for other people, I'm sure.

Baby160P · 10/10/2018 03:30

We had our scan yesterday. Everything seems fine. Gender reveal tonight.

They couldn't check the heart because of the way baby was positioned so I went for a long walk, cold drink and had some sugary sweets and baby moved to it's front which was worse than before.....

Anyone else have this?

Ps I'm up over thinking and worried.

We have to go back in 2 weeks.

Notquiteagandt · 10/10/2018 04:14

@Celebelly I was worried about my dog at first as shes so jumpy. She jumped on me so many times i joked baby would have paw print shaped birth mark. But now shes learned not to jump at me. She comes near me tiptoeing now i say be gentle. Waits for me to lift her on my knee. And is generally so loving and gentle.

My main worry is ive been pretty much house bound since found out pregnant due to hg. Shes not left my side and fussed over me. So dont want her to feel pushed out.

I booked a dog course the farm down road run for exspectant parents so hopefully she does ok.maybe simular close to you?

She knows somethings up as she keeps putting her paws and head on my bump. 😍Granted she freaks and looks confused when she gets kicked! 😂

twiglet · 10/10/2018 04:15

@Baby160P the heart scan is very detailed they check aortas, chambers and the valves I was surprised how much detail they needed I think it was about 4 or 5 different views they required.

As your baby wasn't in the right position it sounds like they are just getting you back to complete it Smile
