Inzi; about the pillow, you are definately not aibu to think a fiver off is good offer...keeping you waiting for 2 days only to refuse was rude though....what I want to know is why (in its gumph about how fab it is)is lying on your left side so important for getting LO in the correct position?...I always go sleep on my right (I know I probably turn about 10 times a night, but that is how I start off)...does that mean my LO is going to stay breech?Does it make me a bad Mum because apparently I'm not lying on the correct side to ensure optimal blood flow for my LO? Would this be a suitable subject for an aibu thread?

J20; Hope the laptop didnt fry . Thanks for the links to the hilarious threads...GB attractive? ...for me he's one of those "not if the human race depended on it!" men..but each to their own.
Meant to say ages ago that I wasnt offended at all that you liked the name Robyn..though totally understand your reasons for not using it!...(Oh and I'd be happy to cut his brake pipes for you in return for b-i-ls!..anything to see the nephews free of his lazy, lying cheating influence..and to see sil collect the insurance money!)..back to the name;in fact I'm quite the opposite of offended....to tell the truth that name hadnt even come up for consideration before we lost her, but I was alone as she landed in my hands and my first thought was "oh my poor little Robin redbreast"... and so that was her name... (it wasnt until later we found it was a girl and had to change the "i" to a "y"!)...damn, got all maudlin now..sorry ...I'll buzz of to an aibu and get myself back in the right frame of mind
Have a good day painting.

Floria I think you're terribly unreasonable in wanting to lie on you right side - I think it certainly brings your parenting skills into question!!!

I think the reason is that the main vein returning blood to your heart lies to the right of middle running along the back of your abdomen. This can be compressed when you're heavily pregnant which is why somed women feel light headed when they lie flat. I'm presuming this is why to lie on the left rather than right but I do both too - you can't stay on one side all night for goodness sake can you?! Last time I was actually more comfortable on my back (not this time though) and after agonising over it I decided that if I was comfy and not light headed then the baby must be fine!

I remember in my antenatal class last time there was something to do with optimum foetal positioning too - I think if you lie on your left then the baby is more liekly to get into a position where it has less far to turn to get to OA (facing backwards) which is the optimum position to be born.

If anyone knows any better feel free to correct me!!!

alicet · 28/06/2007 08:31

And no, Gordon Brown is not up there on my wish list of gorgeous men!!!!

FloriaTosca · 28/06/2007 08:47

HMP; glad the advice helped a little...persist, it is worth it in the end...I get a lovely warm glow inside from hearing that lovely pitter patter.
Sorry to hear about you DHs e-mail..what a stupid unprofessional little man, obviously he's got a serious inferiority complex if he needs to boost his ego in this way...I hope you sent copies of your response to everyone who received the origional. My Dh had a similar but more sneaky collegue...Dh had spent months writing a complicated diagnostic computer programme for their company and being a loyal employee had put the company name as the author on title...he asked his collegue, as the best man for the job, to contribute a couple of mathematical formulas..when he got the programme back the next day the little toe rag had changed the author of the whole programme to himself!!! Good job DH spotted it and changed it back before the little git got credited with all the hard work!!!

Alice; I knew it, I'm a bad Mum in the making!
Thanks for confirming the real scientific reasoning behind the pillows' claims..but I think it would drive me crazy to have one...it is shaped so there is a section behind your back to stop you rolling over and keep you on your left...I'd keep waking all night with pins and needles! Curiously enough the only time I have been light headed lying down (frequently getting up but not lying down)I was on my left side, but it was on a hard beauty therapy couch receiving a reiki treatment...so perhaps it was the cosmic energy that had me seeing stars!!!! Either that or I'm put together all wrong!...(which probably wouldnt be to surprising!)
As for correcting you? Who would dare!!!!

OP posts:
j20baby · 28/06/2007 09:30

my laptop lives another day!

ft, i'm glad i didn't offend you about the name and sorry if i upset you a bit i would still love to use it, but don't know if i dare because if he found out he would accuse me of stalkerish behaviour, as he is denying she's even his.

regarding the sleeping positions, i thought it was something about the blood flow getting to either us or the lo, thats why your not meant to lay on your back and apparantly it gets to your/there heart better on the left side, something like that.

feel so tired today, dreampt my ex and i was still together and everything was ok, then i woke up and realised it wasn't and got upset again, well it is ok, but you know what i mean!

right, on with the painting, have a nice day everyone

MrsFish · 28/06/2007 09:34

Morning everyone

Just mad a batch of jam tarts and scones, anyone want one

The sun is out here YAY! anyone else?

j20baby · 28/06/2007 09:37

change of plan, going to pick up a pregnancy pillow off freecycle, then will come and do painting

FloriaTosca · 28/06/2007 09:44

Morning MrsFish! Baking this early!...mines a scone with jam and cream pleeeeese (oooh mouth watering at the thought!) Sun is around here at the moment but being a little tease and ducking behind every cloud it can, but they are mostly white ones no sign as yet of any greys....sun fully out or not it will be bliss to walk the dog without getting drenched.
J20 glad the laptop survived....sorry about the dream, the subconcious can be very cruel at times ((((hugs)))).

nellieloula · 28/06/2007 10:32

morning everyone - so jealous of the early morning baking - a house full of the smell of warm scones....yum.

re the pillow, I was also told that it was what Alice said and also something about the umbilical cord being able to stretch out and not curl up or around the baby....can't see how that works myself. And surely a good night sleep is better for the baby and mum rather than waking up every hour with cramp from being in the same position??!

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some inspiration - my DH works away a lot, usually back one day a week - I'm a SAHM and finding being pregnant, with my ball of energy DS and limited social network a bit hard. Getting a bit low and now worrying how the hell I'll manage with a LO as well. And as often happens in life, my parents are at the other end of the country, my SIL is heavily pregnant so can't help. my best friend is in America and other friends are dealing with terminally ill parents and partners going through depression....so not much help around! I also don't have the energy to go and meet new people and if I did would be an absolute misery!!!! All the mums I know haven't got onto second babies and are all working 3 or 4 days a week, so seeing them is quite tricky too. Is any one else in a smilar position or has been in the past?? Feel like I'm in a bit of a corner to be honest. Would be good if anyone could shed some light! Sory - that's all a bit of a downer first thing in the morning

hope the sun is out for everyone - I'm going to dream about Mrs Fish's scones.

Apricott · 28/06/2007 11:16

So sorry to hear you're feeling down and isolated Nellie. At least you have your MN friends to talk to! Not that I can think of any useful suggestions to improve your situation other than truly radical and probably unhelpful ones like relocate or get your DH to change jobs. If it's solidarity you're after, you'll find it here though. Feeling isolated with young kids is a common complaint and if it's any consolation, it gets much easier when they're just a little bit older, it really does.

Talking of the benefits of MN, I actually wanted to thank you ladies for talking about gaviscon. Prompted me to try it and it seems to hvae got rid of the horrible heartburn I've been suffering almost constantly for weeks now! Thanks everyone!

Morning all! Can't keep up with this thread so am not even going to try...

Nellie - whereabouts do you live? Have you looked to see if there are any MN meet-ups in your area? I think feeling isolated is a common problem and, although I'm looking forward to spending time with ds, I am not looking forward to being at home a second time as, like you, I am the first person from my antenatal group to have a second child.

nellieloula · 28/06/2007 11:44

Thanks Apricotand mumpbump - good idea about looking out for meet ups; I find too that it becomes a confidence thing - the less you socialise with anything over the age of 2 years, the harder it becomes! I will persevere though and thank you - just sharing with you lovely people has already made me feel better.

Hey Nellie, so sorry you feel so down at the mo. Just wanted to send some support and sympathy. My DH used to work away a lot too. I have found that having at least one activity planned during the day really helped me manage the children and meant I had some adult contact. Also for the days when being pregnant really gets to you and you can't manage a thing - playdough keeps my 2.5 yo occupied for ages, as does colouring, I tend to stick to things that aren't too messy to clear up afterwards.

I always found evenings particlarly hard when DH was away, especially if the children wouldn't go to bed, or were ill, etc. I tried to stick to a routine as much as poss, so hopefully their bedtime would be smooth. Always have plenty of calpol in though, for emergencies!

I always find planning holidays is very therapeutic when you're on your own - gives you something to look forward to when you do have family time

Mumpbump · 28/06/2007 13:13

Inzi - what you mention sounds like mushroom wellington - there are loads of recipes on the internet for this...
