@Gronk27 I think the guideline is 200mg which I take to mean a tea and a coffee per day, or maybe up to 3 teas. TBH I thought I'd find that harder than I have, as usually I derive a lot of joy from hot tea and iced coffee, but I tend not to even finish my cup of tea in the morning. I don't seem to crave it like I used to, and I just don't enjoy hot drinks - maybe to do with the weather, idk. Anyway, it extends to the mint/other herbal tea I always usually have at bedtime, so I don't think it's necessarily a caffeine aversion.

But to be honest, it seems like the basis for advising against lots of caffeine is a bit wibbly. It's based on retrospective data (so asking women AFTER un/successful pregnancies what their intake was, rather than administering or banning during a study, which would be quite unethical). Women who said they drank a lot of coffee were women who had no aversion to it/didn't suffer a lot of sickness or other symptoms, and lack of symptoms can point to a dodgy pregnancy. So the coffee thing might be an effect rather than a cause of poor outcome.

Hope that wasn't an essay. I find it very interesting! I definitely wouldn't be hardcore about avoiding caffeine if I wanted it, anyway.

@TeaRexx and everyone else feeling very sicky... I had a total emo breakdown in bed the other night. I felt sooooo awful and soooo fed up of feeling so awful. Then once I started I couldn't stop crying!! Must have been hormonal on top of fed up. My husband needed to go to sleep for work and after comforting me had to try to block out my sniffles. It really does get you down the constant sickness. Even though it's supposed to be a good sign!! Big hugs to all. I'm now 12 weeks and no sign of let up yet....

EDD 09/03/19 Kent. One DS (nearly 2)

Finally got my pregnancy stuff out of the in-laws loft and found the heartbeat with my Doppler. 10+1 today and the constant nausea is getting me down a bit.

@Gronk27 I'm quite relaxed about the caffeine but I only usually drink one cup of tea a day anyway, my caffeine tends to come from fizzy drinks so I'm drinking more water / squash and then having coke or whatever if I fancy one. The main concerns seem to be slight increase in miscarriage risk and reduced birthweight. I did joke with my midwife that I wouldn't complain about having another sub 7lb baby rather than a 9lb one (luckily she had a sense of humour).

Midwife says I'm due feb but nhs calculator says 2 March. Guess on Tuesday I'll have a better idea!! Although my first was 2weeks late so I'm more about vague ball park due dates. Like 'early march'. I actually find the day dates super unhelpful.

@ladycarlotta that's an interesting point about women who have non-viable pregnancies being more likely to be able to stomach the taste of tea and coffee, therefore skewing the figures. Certainly with my last (miscarried) pregnancy, I was drinking (decaf) tea and coffee quite happily up until I miscarried, whereas now I absolutely cannot countenance even the thought of the taste!

@Gronk27 I am, admittedly, quite cautious naturally, so I usually just stick to NHS recommendations. At the end of the day, caffeine is a drug, it's a stimulant, and it does have a noticeable physical effect on fully grown adults, so it's prob not something we would want a teeny little foetus to be exposed to a lot of. I personally don't drink caffeine even when I'm not pregnant because I am prone to long bouts of high anxiety which are noticeably exacerbated by caffeine consumption!

What is interesting is that the recommendations in different countries can vary quite a lot. In France, apparently, expectant mothers are not warned to avoid eating uncooked soft cheeses! And post-birth, I was interested to hear from an acquaintance that in Denmark they recommend not feeding babies gluten until 12 months as they think that reduces the risk of an allergy developing!

Our scan was amazing yesterday. I threw up before and tried to drink enough water, but I don't think I did. In addition to being chubby she then said it was hard to see and she thouht the baby was measuring behind. This really worried me as I am pretty sure when we conceived.
So she did an internal scan and it was so clear. baby actually measured ahead by a couple of days, so it was exactly 8 weeks during the scan. So clear to see! It had a strong heart beat so I hope that is good news miscarriage % wise.

I don't find the caffeine that hard, I usually get mine from fizzy drinks so trying to cut down a bit.
I find the cured meats and cheese tricky. I love eating things like crackers and cheese, Parma ham etc.

My 12 week NHS scan has come through from
The hospital and it's the first week the children are back at school. I feel really bad as I have a 6 week holiday now, but date wise now would be too early. And I am not sure how accommodating the hospital will be with changing times? I know I have a right to go but it feels rubbish somehow, especially as I haven't told work yet so would only give them 4 days notice.

Can I be added to the roll call please?
