Hellooooo !!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
tokentotty · 07/06/2007 13:58

Hey, I heard that as well Wash but completely forgot to ask if anyone else had done it. Will give that a whirl too in that case and save the Lansinoh for an 'if I really need it' situation perhaps.

Right, I have to get off down the launderette as my 2nd new washing machine has broken down (crappy Hoover) and they cant fix until next week!! (Now you know why I call myself the washersaurus

Babylovesmuffins · 07/06/2007 14:03

That's a good tip Washersaurus! Will keep that in mind when the time comes.

jem1969 · 07/06/2007 14:04

Strage- neighbours is on the background- Susan and Karl have just got remarried on a boat in front of tower bridge with Sinitta as a witness and someone else suddenly arrived, went into labour and doctor Karl delivered the baby in 1 minute flat...

tokentotty · 07/06/2007 14:06

Hahahhaaha did she still have her tights on a la Daphne in the eighties (?)

jem1969 · 07/06/2007 14:09

no but her hair was the same and she was with Jono Coleman, the slightly rotund DJ. The boat then carried on past the Thames and my office..
Just got sent a picture of a friends baby lying in a mass of bright yellow poo- covered head to toe in the stuff- nice!

bananabump · 07/06/2007 14:22

TT, I think I'll leave mine just to frighten the midwives.

kiteflying · 07/06/2007 14:24

Hi everyone. Hope you are all well. TT, glad you have broken through your wall of denial and started shopping for peanut. Washer, good to see you back here and sorry you have had so many worried moments recently.
Like you Babyloves, I am very allergic to lanolin (have to read cosmetics labels carefully as a result) so have been looking at non-lanolin things for breastfeeding caused soreness.
I read somewhere that prepping your nipples with almond oil before giving birth is a good idea, and that calendula cream can be used for sore nipples afterwards. I have some really stright up calendula and chamomile balm (i.e. no parabens or emulsions in it) from Akamuti that I am keeping aside now, but Washer's breastmilk tip sounds like the best thing.
Jem, glad you went home and are having an easy long weekend. Hope it pays off in renewed energy next week.
There's a thread on what we really really need ahead of arrival at the moment and my favourite quote is "love, boobs and babygros"!! Makes me ashamed of all my lists and my storage box of nappies and incidentals. And yes, we did buy one wee pair of shoes but only because my BF was having a doting dad moment and not because I have any idea that babies actually need shoes.
I can't keep up with everyone's chat. I was at the hospital this morning and you would think I had been off for a month! I saw a v junior doctor in my consultant's team who assured me that as I am low risk I had no need to see a doctor again until I am 41 weeks . [Does little jig about not having to commute to hospital too often]. As I have talked them out of making me come in for a 34 week growth scan we are thinking of getting the fancy 4D one for ourselves next week!

tokentotty · 07/06/2007 14:27

I misread your post Jem, I took it that you had the tv on in the background showing Neighbours - missed the Tower Bridge ref. Dammit, could have gone and thrown things at them myself if they'd come down as far as the Wharf !
Banana - knowing how much it hurt last time I had it done, the temptation to leave it is growing.....

OP posts:
growingbagpuss · 07/06/2007 14:38

i got advised to rub my nipples with a toothbrush to toughen them up.... my it hurt like hell!! I got through DS feeding with no probs - lanisoh was good - I'll ask my m/w friend if she can recommend any lanolin free stuff.

Off to see M/w this pm - 31 week - ds coming and v excited about listening to LO's heartbeat.

I found muslins were great - I tucked one in one side of my bra (the non feeding side -) to catch the squirts that came out when i was feeding, I also tucked one in the feeding side to catch the run off when DS gasped for a breath and it shot everywhere!! Mind you - it wasn't a good look for trying to master the whole subtle feeding in public thing!

Hersetta · 07/06/2007 14:38

TT - good preparation for labour. just imagine it lasting for a minute every 4 minutes !!

jem1969 · 07/06/2007 14:41

TT- you didn't misread-it was on TV so no chance to go and see the big stars themselves I'm afraid! Trinny and Susannah were at DH's offices on Tuesday though- he was quite excited! (Apparently Susannah is 'hotter')..He had a word with her and was quite disappointed not to be congratulated on his dress sense I think

kiteflying · 07/06/2007 14:46

LOL at your husband secretly wanting suzannah's approval jem!

GillL · 07/06/2007 15:00

Don't forget to stock up on sanitary towels. It's amazing how many you'll need in the first week or so. I kept having to send dh out to buy more last time. I used the heavy duty Mothercare ones but a lot of people use Always (I never found those very comfortable).

I also read on MN about taking a jug into hospital with you for when you go to the loo. If you're sore or have had stitches then it could burn when you wee so pouring water down there can help.

I would also recommend getting some infacol. I rang my sister up one night (it was about 3am but she was awake feeding her dd anyway) because dd wouldn't stop crying. Dh drove down to her house to get some infacol and she stopped crying within a few minutes and we were able to get some sleep.

I agree though that it's not the end of the world if you don't have everything you need. There's always 24 hour supermarkets and neighbours/family/friends that you can call on if you're desperate for anything. It's not essential to have the nursery ready for when the baby arrives but it is more difficult to fit in diy when he/she is around though.

lizziemun · 07/06/2007 15:20

When buying breastpad make sure that they don't have any plastic in them. DH accidently bought some last time which had a plastic backing, they were horrible and made me even more uncomfortable and dd was born at the end of january so no where near as hot as august.

lizziemun · 07/06/2007 15:23

Should add along with sanitary towels i also bought very cheap knickers which could just be binned (sorry if TMI)

Washersaurus · 07/06/2007 15:36

Oooh yes lizzie, cheap 'big' pants from Tesco - much more dignified than paper pants.

I found washable breastpads nicer to wear than disposable ones too (although I didn't need them very much).

Back on the nipple cream subject; I had some Kamillosan creme (which is just chamomile I think) just in case I needed it...I only every used it on DS' bum in the end though.

tokentotty · 07/06/2007 15:42

And back we go to the grim realities of childbirth.....eeek !!!

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 07/06/2007 15:48

Just concentrate on the shopping for now TT - you'll be fine

loler · 07/06/2007 15:52

GUess what still not exchanged- the solicitors can't seem to get it together to talk to each other! Don't think this baby will ever have a room.

I think baby wipes are amazing - I couldn't live with out them! With dd when new born did use water but found that ds had too many wrinkles for that and his poo always went everywhere so used a wipe followed by water (or just 20 or so wipes when out!). They are also fantastic for getting baby sick/poo out of just about anything (including friends cream carpets, that lovely new buggy, DH cars seats, baby clothes so only have to change every couple of hours, dog fur!). Also used most of a pack when we put the house up for sale to clean walls and skirting boards.

Interesting to hear how big people are measuring/measured. I think it's another of those not really scientific thing that you get when pg. DS at one time was about 8cm more than he should be - was a day early and 10lb.

tokentotty · 07/06/2007 15:52

Yes, fingers in ears and repeat "LA LA LA LAAAAAAAAAA LA LA L LAAAAA" until you all stop talking about the icky bits !!

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 07/06/2007 15:59

TT - LOL

Loler - I have to agree that baby wipes are miracle cleaners I do use them for lots of household jobs and those hard to shift poo's on DS, but question their ingredients for use on a little baby actually on that basis.

Was so thankful I had a pack in the change bag when I ran the buggy through some dog poo though. Got my wheels clean in no time

Washersaurus · 07/06/2007 16:00

Sorry to hear you are still waiting to exchange btw. I bet you are itching to move and get settled in now.

kiteflying · 07/06/2007 16:10

Loler - when in doubt get stroppy and yell a lot. Sometimes it helps get things moving!

Washersaurus · 07/06/2007 16:20

Right, I'm off to do housewifey things
