Think il use the baby’s new changing bag I ordered as his hospital bag xx

I was dubious buying newborn sizes for that exact reason @YouCantBeSirius so have kept the receipt for everything!

I think I'm going to use a carry on size suitcase for my stuff (watched so many YouTube videos that all recommend a bag on wheels!) and whatever changing bag I end up getting for babies things.

I am absolutely terrified to give birth. I've been watching loads of positive birth story videos on YT but still so scared Sad

This is all his clothes so far, pile front left is rompers, back left is jumpers, back right is vests and front right is jeans shorts and tracksuit bottoms. Everything is either 0-3 months or 3-6 months. Not sure if i should get anything else or just wait till he is born?

Welcome @FoxtrotSkarloey and congrats on your pregnancy! Sorry to hear about your previous mc. Do you know if you're having a boy or girl? Shopping is so much fun I have to stop myself every time I'm near a baby shop! X

OP posts:
peterpanwendy · 01/06/2018 21:49

@NikkiL123 I think I have a similar amount to you, maybe a few more sleepsuits Blush but the general consensus I've heard from friends/family and from videos I've watched is that you really don't need much and it's so easy to go overboard! X

@FoxtrotSkarloey welcome out of the shadows! Congrats on your pregnancy, we were talking a while ago about who will give birth first so you may well be in the first!

@peterpanwendy that makes me feel better you have the same amount! I have struggled to find clothes i like for boy! Every where i go has soooooo many girls clothes then find the boys section tucked away in a corner with hardly anything there! I have to admit i am quite fussy (dont like characters or mixed colours!) but still think there is more selection for girls

peterpanwendy · 01/06/2018 22:10

@NikkiL123 I definitely agree! When shopping for my best friends baby boy I found it so hard compared to the girls clothes which are everywhere! I'm with you though I don't like characters or teddies! And I hate the typical baby pink and white girly girl stuff. I'm really fussy 🙈

I hate the stereotype pink and blue. I love patterns, spotty, stripy, floral! And definitely think there could be more unisex stuff. Buying for a baby when you don't know the sex is so hard and it shouldn't be. Everything's white!
One shop I've found have significantly more colourful unisex clothing is John Lewis.

@FoxtrotSkarloey I was told that for the beginning you only really need vests, sleepsuits and a cardi or jacket, then when it gets colder a coat/snowsuit etc. Tiny babies don't wear much other than sleepsuits so plenty of time for you or your DH to go shopping for more :)

@FoxtrotSkarloey my and OH were having this exact conversation last night! I said just sleepsuit and nappy until weather gets cooler and he said vest and sleepsuit with nappy! So i have no idea really i guess depends on weather at the time 🤷🏼‍♀️ xx

peterpanwendy · 01/06/2018 22:38

I think judge it on the weather at the time! If it's really hot I'd be inclined to just do a vest and not a sleepsuit, or a vest and leggings (I love them!) but definitely just a sleepsuit if it's too hot for both. At night I think I will dress her in a long sleeved vest and a gro bag but again I'm not 100% sure if that's right?!

It's likely to be really hot here, it often gets into the 30s during summer. There is actually a weather report already if you look at accuweather's extended forecast (aaaah when did that happen???) and it looks like it will be warm, around 20 with showers and thunderstorms around that time. This baby seems to like thunderstorms so we'll see! However this last week has made me remember the heat of the UK in around 20 degree weather and how unbearable that can be! It must be the humidity, as that's the main difference I have noted, so a dehumidifier might be a useful thing to keep in mind as a backup purchase, for anyone worrying about heat. 20-23 really isn't a problem here at all as it's only around 40-60% humidity. It was a bit uncomfortable today at 27 but I didn't feel like I was melting like I did in the UK at 21 with 80-90% humidity before a thunderstorm, and nor have I got sunburnt here sitting in a park!

Anyway if it was high 20s/low 30s (aka close to or unbearably hot) then I was planning on dressing the baby either in rompers, or just a short sleeved vest. Possibly some leggings and a short sleeved t-shirt over a vest with a cardigan for backup, if it was more comfortable. If I was in the UK or if the weather forecast looks as though it will dip again I might get a few more sleepsuits as I think they are great for over vests. So you have the nappy, vest and sleepsuit plus optional cardigan in case it gets cooler. Defo don't bother with anything fiddly, anything which pulls over the head without massively opening at the neck, anything which fastens at the back. Personally I don't like sleepsuits with nothing underneath, I think they need the vest, but a romper is (weirdly!) OK to me without underwear! I think girl babies can be OK in just a sundress too, and particularly if you're doing cloth, a nappy and a t-shirt can actually be an adorable combination, but probably better once they are a bit bigger. Long sleeved vests do make good pyjamas if you're swaddling or using a grobag, but might be too hot for a hot summer night. Leggings defo work over a vest but I don't like the way it looks tucked in. That's me being fussy :)

Try Boots for lovely, bright coloured clothing which is not overpriced. I was seriously taken by a lot of their stuff but I think I will ask my sister to send some once I've totted up what we have and what we'll need (thanks to the person offering but I have LOTS of people to post things!) The boys' section often has unisex items in (IMO). I found Sansbury's selection was very poor and the only other supermarket I got to look at was Asda which had a few nice things but very split again. I also notice anything brightly coloured is either dinosaur or jungle/circus/zoo themed for no apparent reason. There are some nice nautical blue and red things too. I suppose that colour pairing makes sense but it drives you slightly mad once you notice it. I also love fruit themed patterns but these all seem to heavily feature pink or frills (they seem to use the girls' lemon/pink/green palette!) and then as said everything else is either pink, blue or beige. However there is another theme I like this year - a sun/happy theme which is grey and yellow, but seems to feature a lot of writing which DH isn't keen on. There's actually some lovely things in M&S I've seen on their website as well, and lots which break the usual theme/colour scheme associations.

In Germany babies wear long sleeved vests rather than short sleeved ones and then "stramplers" over the top which is a kind of dungaree made out of terry towelling kind of material with feet on. It's quite cute, I suppose? And the overall effect is of course, exactly the same as a short sleeved vest plus sleepsuit, in terms of layers but I just think sleepsuits look much snugglier and more comfortable, there's more leeway in terms of sizing, plus you don't need to worry about matching the vest colour since you don't see it, and it seems less fiddly. You can get sleepsuits here but they are much harder to find, and not as nice IMO. We can also order from Next and M&S online which is nice but only full priced new stuff, no bargain rails! And there is always a minimum spend.

UK sizes go Early Baby ≤ Tiny Baby < Newborn < 0-3 months. They're not always consistent between shops, and anything smaller than newborn isn't consistent at all. (Look at the estimated weights). I wouldn't buy Tiny Baby unless you've a history in your family of very small babies as I don't think most babies will fit in them. They are really designed for babies under 6lbs. DS was 6lb11 and newborn was a perfect fit for him and didn't fit for very long. A good way to think about newborn is "up to 1 month" because this is about how long they fit. You can put 0-3 stuff on them as well. It's baggy but it works. I wouldn't get too much in Newborn, because you won't use it, but it's a good size for the coming home outfit unless you're likely to have a big baby (then make sure you have a backup one in 0-3 as well!)

Nikil - love the clothing pic! I keep saying this but now I have everything I'm planning to buy I'll do some pics soon. I think I might wash the new items first so they don't contaminate the others with smoke smell :(

BertieBotts · 02/06/2018 00:09

Next clothes are great too but the selection can vary according to area so worth looking at their catalogue online. Their stock ranges from heavily traditional/royal family baby style stuff to really bright and colourful to almost mini-fashion for babies! And so in some stores you get a bright rainbow assortment whereas in others it's strictly pink, blue and beige and in others it's stuff which looks like it should be on the teen racks. Totally odd. But great for all kinds of tastes, worth checking out. I think you can order to the store to see if you like something before you buy.

Gap is good if you can get their sales. Overpriced otherwise but very, very tempting.

BertieBotts · 02/06/2018 00:19

Here's my selection of bright coloured sleepsuits from UK shops :) I would have included other clothes too but it would have ended up enormous! It makes a good starting point though if you're looking to browse for more unisex things. I don't think there's anything here which is too massively "boy" so may be useful.

Nothing from Boots on there even though Boots have lovely things because their website doesn't work with pinterest.

@FoxtrotSkarloey For clothes sizes I'd recommend going off your birth weight. The baby clothes do say weights on them too so that helps. My DS1 was 6lb 3 when born (I was 6lb so expected a small baby) and was swamped by newborn size. I think he was about 3mths old when he grew out of 0-1mths stuff and 6mths old when he grew out of 0-3mth stuff.

I've found Sainsbury's quite good for baby clothes (and M&S do some cute stuff but £££), but found Tesco quite poor in terms of choice especially for boys.

I remember the stress of what to dress the babies in on hot nights. If you google I'd imagine lullaby trust will prob do a guide. I'll have a look for a link. I have a groegg in DS1'S room so it's easy to tell the temp.

Some useful info on this link about what to dress baby in at night

NikkiL123 · 02/06/2018 08:07

Silly question, are there quick ways to check if a baby is getting too warm? As in are feet or hands an indicator?

YouCantBeSirius · 02/06/2018 08:09

Depending on the heat I'll dress my baby in a short sleeved vest with a babygrow on cooler nights or just the sleepsuits when it's warmer. I'm in Scotland so unlikely to get too warm. Although the humidity is ridiculous, it's at 97% just now Sad

Emmasmum2013 · 02/06/2018 08:15

@FoxtrotSkarloey welcome!! Always good to see some new people. I wonder how many other lurkers we have!? Come and say hello!!!

In regards to what to dress the baby in, I’d buy a couple of newborn small things and chuck them in your hospital bag for just in case. My last was 7lb 11 oz and the 0-3 mothercare sleepsuits we brought to dress her in were massive. We had some tiny baby things at home from mothercare and they were a perfect fit. But not for long! They grow so quick!! So I’m guessing mothercare stuff measures big for the size. DD was a winter baby so we had her in a vest and sleep suit for literally about 6 months! I’d just slip her coat on as well if we went out. I think we’ll probably just go with nappy and sleepsuit this time and skip the vest with it being warmer. But I’ll just have to see what the weather is like. I’ve had DD in bed with nothing but a nappy when the weather was really warm. You’re right @BertieBotts, the humidity is so overbearing in this country. You’re also a girl after my own heart with the Pinterest boards! I’ve followed you!

I’m going to either take my flight bag or a small hand luggage suitcase for my hospital bag. But I think I’ll go with the case. Something on wheels does seem like a better idea!!

Hopefully it won’t be too hot today. It seems to have cooled down slightly up north where I am.

SpriteGirl · 02/06/2018 08:20

@NikkiL123 someone on this thread mentioned a while ago that you put two fingers at the back of their neck, just underneath their collar. If it’s warm it’s ok, if it’s cold they’re too cold and if it’s sweaty they’re too hot.

NikkiL123 · 02/06/2018 08:21

@SpriteGirl thank you x

Emmasmum2013 · 02/06/2018 08:43

@SpriteGirl that’s an awesome tip I never knew that!!
