@watchingmasterchef our course was like that too. All very positive, focussed on the birth and 5 mins on how to feed baby......That was it. I still have no idea how you change a nappy Hmm

Cookie1831 · 13/05/2018 09:08

Sorry iv fluids that should read

ClareB83 · 13/05/2018 10:04

Our nhs course was one session on giving birth and one session on looking after baby. What I keep finding though is that before you have the baby the hcp all keep to the official script (breastfeeding, no dummies, no wet wipes etc) then as soon as you have the baby they just say "whatever works for you". I don't know if they're giving me a pass because it's premie twins or if they're like this with everyone, but it is odd. Easier but a bit odd.

@SylvesterTheCat I went on an NCT course with my first (haven't bothered this time round - I just did the local NHS midwife led one). I found a lot of it trivial but also quite a lot was useful - we did 5 sessions and one was all about life with a newborn. We have the most amazing group that have been my lifeline at times since DS was born. We still see each other all the time with our little ones and compare our highs and lows!

@WreckItRach sorry to hear you are feeling rubbish. I would call in and see what they say. I have a feeling they will say baby will be fine - essentially it will take all the nutrients it needs but it is you who will suffer. I've definitely had this with this dreadful cold I've still got. Try drinking some flat coke to settle your stomach (my mum always swears by it for D&V bugs). I agree with others though you need to try not to get dehydrated. Get well soon. Thanks

Watchingmasterchef · 13/05/2018 11:08

The other thing I just remembered- I believed every word the nhs woman said at the antenatal course , then as soon as baby was born , everyone started telling me different things . Like total opposites. Eg about feeding - doctors telling me it was essential to start combination feeding for jaundice , then next day with shift changes different doctor telling me that was absolute worst thing to do as would interfere with breastfeeding . But too late as had already given bottle . Co sleeping good one day , bad the next . In the end I felt guilty about everything I was doing and felt totally inadequate and scared I was harming my baby . It was fine in the end but the ‘do what’s right for you ‘ advice is probably the only good advice

Northernbeachbum · 13/05/2018 11:24

The ladies who ran our NHS class were fab to be fair and explained how to safely co sleep, how to bottle feed (albeit briefly) but it was 90% of time on labour and the birth (But from an ideal world point of view), 8% breast feeding and 2% anything else

Glad we went but i think it would give you false hopes if you were a sceptic

Been having mild period pains over the last few days, anyone else else experiencing this? Very different feeling to previous Braxton hicks

SparklesandBubbles · 13/05/2018 11:51

Anyone else still working? I work freelance so am working from home but have still got tons to do. I'm having to sort out GDPR regulation emails to our whole database and it's currently doing my head in! I thought I'd sorted it all last night but a glitch in the system has mucked things up and embarrassingly key contacts have received multiple emails from us. I'm wading through over 100 emails now trying to sort this mess out. I just want to chill on the sofa and do nothing!! (On top of that I only had 4hrs sleep last night as DS was unsettled again Sad) sorry for the rant - just need to get it off my chest.

Hearts22 · 13/05/2018 11:57

Sorry to hear you had another disturbed night @SparklesandBubbles ❤️ I’m still working, I work 8-6 (sometimes later) in a shop on my feet all day 5 days a week. It’s killing me, and I don’t start maternity for another month!

SparklesandBubbles · 13/05/2018 12:03

@Hearts22 - poor you. Another month of work on your feet - I feel for you. I hope they'll allow you plenty or time to sit down during your day. I'm 38 weeks now so baby could come at any moment. I just feel I've got so much other stuff I wanted to sort out before this baby arrives and am not getting a chance to do any of it as work needs to take priority. The money will be nice but I'm beginning not to care about that anymore!!

WreckItRach · 13/05/2018 12:09

I'm super thirsty today and drinking loads which is good. Little one is moving loads so I will try your advice ladies, thank you so much!

@SparklesandBubbles that sounds like a nightmare, sorry you have to do that instead of relaxing! Could you set aside an hour for work then a break and keep alternating?
I start leave on Monday now, I wanted to last longer but working with 5 years olds on tiny furniture and constantly rushing around all day has bested me!
When are you thinking about starting mat leave?

jadeward89 · 13/05/2018 12:18

@NorthernBeachBum I went to sleep with those kinds of pains last night, it was also in my back 😕 took me ages to get to sleep and every time I stirred it started again. I’m not due for 5 weeks yet (though I won’t begrudge the baby coming from 37 weeks if I’m totally honest)
@SparklesandBubbles I hope you manage to sort what you can but also manage to get some rest too

SparklesandBubbles · 13/05/2018 12:38

@WreckItRach I was supposed to finish up last week but the boss persuaded me to get this gdpr stuff sorted. I thought it was going to be relatively quick but turning out to be a nightmare. I thinking I'm going to say Monday is my last day whatever happens as I really have had enough. It's not going to help labour start if I'm super stressed out over this.

Northernbeachbum · 13/05/2018 12:40

Still working here too, 50% on my feet and the rest driving. It seems to have got very busy lately too so I'm trying to get everything sorted before I leave @hearts22 I don't envy you, I've worked in retail in the past and I can't imagine working like that when pregnant. I'm working up to 38 weeks BUT perfectly happy if he decided to appear sooner, 36 weeks now so anytime is good.

@jadeward89 sorry to hear youre suffering too but also glad it's not just me.

@wreckitrach hope you feel better throughout the day

WreckItRach · 13/05/2018 13:21

Thanks @Northernbeachbum
Working up to 38 weeks is so dedicated!! I couldn't do that!

@SparklesandBubbles that sounds like a good idea, you need to be rested before all the fun begins!
@Hearts22 I cannot even imagine working in retail while heavily pregnant! Make sure you take care of yourself!

Hearts22 · 13/05/2018 14:21

Thank you everyone, I do work with a really nice team who are being very helpful and doing all the heavy jobs for me and I’ve been allowed to have extra breaks. Hopefully the next 4 weeks will fly by!

Heregoeseverything · 13/05/2018 23:31

Sorry for radio silence all, been on babymoon, have just caught up.

Massive congratulations, @ClareB83 !

Everything crossed for you @ElizabethLemon . I second the earlier comments that it sounds like they are not very worried but of course it is totally understandable that you would worry and I really hope they can put your mind at ease very soon.

Re NCT, I am doing this for the friends - so far I am optimistic about my group - but have found it to be rather inaccurate and entirely inconsistent with my friends' experience of childbirth, as well as statistics. The impression we have been given by the instructor is that it is extremely rare to have a bad birth experience/to require intervention ("For every one woman who had an experience she didn't enjoy, there are 100 who had wonderful experiences" Hmm). It's fine as long as taken with a huge pinch of salt, though it does make me a bit cross that it seems to be wilfully misleading women.

I am absolutely exhausted these days! Have had a fairly symptomatic pregnancy to date but I find exhaustion by far the most difficult to deal with and am struggling at work. It probably doesn't bode well for the future but I feel quite overwhelmed as there is so much to organise for baby but I am just too tired to do anything...

Those of you who did the GTT, may I ask what your results were? I was sent for it because of excessive thirst and exhaustion, and results were rather high (7.3 where cut-off for GD is 7.8) so am a little concerned...

Heregoeseverything · 13/05/2018 23:36

Also, anyone else unable to stop burping?! Stomach appears to have moved to my throat...

Shutupanddance1 · 14/05/2018 11:34

@Heregoeseverything I was referred but they do a different initial test here. Mine came back perfectly normal - I had been following the GD diet which was recommended on the gestational diabetes uK Facebook group.

I’m feel exhausted, I’ve been nesting nonstop and I’ve completely overdone it the last few days. DH got a little worried about me last night and asked me to sit down and relax as he was worried about the baby Blush poor guy!

All the ladies working - whao - what a fab job you are all doing Star I’m SAHP but running around after my toddler definitely seems a lot harder these days Confused. I’ve started to waddle, baby feels like she’s in my pelvis.

Heregoeseverything · 14/05/2018 11:44

@shutupanddance1 I am dying for the nesting stage to kick in!! There is so much to do, no sign of nesting and just too tired and overwhelmed to do what needs to be done, had a good cry last night Blush

HoneyBee03 · 14/05/2018 12:06

@Heregoeseverything I also feel like my stomach is in my throat! It's fine until a burp stumbles out unexpectedly mid-sentence...

I'm still at work, just under 4 weeks left! I'll be leaving on 7th June when I'm 37 weeks. I've mostly handed my job over to my replacement now though, so it could be a very boring few weeks. My midwife isn't happy about me working until then as I'm looking tired, although this is mainly down to moving house.

My nesting instinct has seriously kicked in, but having a new home is a great project for it! I'm knackered though. I'll hoover, then lie down, then wash up, then lie down, etc. And unless friends come to see us, socialising has gone out the window because I just don't have the energy for it.

I'm giving ante-natal classes a miss. Haven't really heard anything good about them so I don't think I'll bother, and my midwife is very laidback about them too.

jadeward89 · 14/05/2018 13:45

My nesting instinct has actually kicked in today! I’m not someone who has the urge to tidy very often but today I’ve, mostly, tidied my daughters room (I’ve left some for her to do or she’ll think she’s gotten away with not having to do it!) I’ve done two loads of washing, I have two more left to do (family of 5 and I generally only do the washing over 2 days if I can) and I have cleaned nearly all of the windows in the house! Husband has just come home early and told me to sit down whilst he makes lunch 😂

jadeward89 · 14/05/2018 13:50

Oh and I only went to the anti natal classes put on by my hospital when I was pregnant with my first 10 years ago and the only thing I found useful was the tour of the hospital. I haven’t even thought about them this time, think it’s because all my spare time is running around after the kids.
Those of you still working are amazing, I stopped working at the end of March, I was self employed but I wasn’t happy with the business so decided to shut at the end of March. I’m actually bored though there is plenty I could be doing around the house I’m just too tired to do anything

WreckItRach · 14/05/2018 14:18

Wow you certainly have been busy @jadeward89 !
Today is my first official day of maternity leave and I have really been struggling with guilt! I work in a school so I'm never off when everyone else is in unless I'm sick, it just feels a bit weird. I have made the most of the sunshine by doing gardening this morning though. Trying to keep myself busy. I'm feeling good today apart from acid reflux and needing to pee every 20 minutes haha

jadeward89 · 14/05/2018 14:57

I’ll pay for it tonight no doubt though, I just thought I’d make the most of having a burst of energy whilst the kids were at school. That is about to end though as I have to go and pick them up (and hope that my eldest is in a better mood than he was this morning lol) acid reflux is horrendous I have been given tablets for it, I’m grateful that it only seems to pester me at night so it’s manageable.
Don’t feel guilty you know they’ll be thrilled to see you again when you go back after the baby is born

Addy2 · 14/05/2018 15:46

@sparksandbubbles I'm still working. 9 days to go, takes me to 37 weeks. Kudos @northernbeachbum for going to 38! I nested this weekend, though seem to have the urge to clean without the energy. Did the nct class, wasn't particularly helpful.

Hello again to all. I come and go from this thread as it's hard to stay on top of during the week. Slowing down at work a bit now, so hope to keep up better this time. 35 weeks today!
