edie - mine is definitley quieter, or maybe it is just the position (mw today said he/she is breech at the moment). lo is quiet most of the day, has a session around 3pm and then starts exercising in the evening, and through the night.

dal21 · 19/06/2007 19:42

Hello everyone!

I am still trying to get my head round the fact that someone sent you a picture of themselves with their bump and knickers. why would you do that to another pregnant friend?????
Have no fear - the pregnancy gods are fair, she will be gotten in some other way.

Loving all the dresses! It is party season, I have a black tie affair coming up and i love the one below.

www.picchumaternity.com/uk/acatalog/strapless_materni ty_dress.html

We will all look fab - I have never had so many compliments. May be getting big, but my hair, skin and nails look amazing! Not to mention the fantastic cleavage!!

canadianmum · 19/06/2007 20:00

dal - very positive thinking! I have a big tummy but my hair is thick and shiny - love it love it love it!

Just ordered a carseat and a gymini . My boys LOVED theirs when they were babies, unfortunately we gave it away to charity when I had decided not to have any more children .Not too much more to buy!

MrsMar · 19/06/2007 20:05

edie - mine seems quieter too, I think the reducing amount of space is having an effect I guess, as I don't get the massive kicks regularly like I used to. I get loads of squirming followed by a big kick that makes me jump!

Hopeitwontbebig · 19/06/2007 20:16

Oh my goodness, it's been a busy message day today.

ROFL Sophus re eyelashes!!!!!!

Kinki, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maternity leave????????

I remember feeling exactly the same when I was at the end of my second pregnancy. Totally normal fears I suspect.

Thanks everyone re concern for DH. Well he's doing really really well. SUCH a contrast to the surgeries he had in November, when it was all a big emergency. Bit crap because he has been left with a wound on his elbow (since Nov) which just refuses to heel. Unfortunately this has meant that the surgeon couldn't do all that he wanted to today because it's all infected..again, so it looks like he's going to need another op soon. I'm just PRAYING it's not in September

I started this thread about that Boxer if you want an update!!!

Just started a new thread in health, but no answeres yet and its past his bedtime, can anyone here help, (you guys are so knowledgeable):

ds (7) dropped something heavy on his big toe 2 months ago, resulting in a black nail.
Tonight he bashed it and now the black bit - half of the nail - has broken, leaving just the side of it attached. Its very painful to touch.
Anyone know if I should cut it off, or just wrap it up and see what happens. If I cut it off, it would leave half the nail bed with no nail, is this ok? I hate nails!
TIA.

Hopeitwontbebig · 19/06/2007 20:34

Hi Kinki, this happened to my finger nail when I shut it in a car door (((ouch))) a few yrs ago. My docs advice was to let it drop off when it was ready, and it did! The skin underneath was really soft initially but soon became tough. The new nail took an ETERNITY to grow though. HTH x x x x x

OP posts:
kinki · 19/06/2007 20:40

Thanks hopey, I'll just wrap it up for now then. There's not much holding holding it on, I wouldn't be surprised if its off by morning.

Hopeitwontbebig · 19/06/2007 20:43

Yes, would agree with wrapping it up, wouldn't want to catch it on something... ooh ouch!

am still hunting for dresses and OMG came across this website. How LUSH are the dresses on here (if there was a shop window nose would be pushed right up drooling!)

kinki · 19/06/2007 21:37

I was going to explain about my maternity benefit, or lack of. I work in a freelance kind of way, ie no contract as such, I just get paid for work done, but I have a fixed slot on a friday to do my work (I don't get sick or holiday pay). I normally claim at least £90 a week. To qualify for maternity benefit I have to earn on average about £84 per week, so I should be ok. Apparently its calculated and based on 2 specific month's pay, and these months are non negotiable, based on date written on the matb1 form.

HOWEVER, in month one I was admitted to hospital due to pregnancy complications for a week. I was told to have complete bed rest for another week. So that 4 week month all I earnt was £210 (I don't get sick pay). Month 2, (pay day was end of may) I have just discovered that for whatever reason I was never paid, it should have been £465. I've no idea why I wasn't paid, didn't even realise til today, no wonder we've been skint this month. The pay dept say if I'm owed that money I'll obviously get it but as it will now have to be claimed outside the 2 stipulated months there is no way it can be added to my claim for maternity benefit. I am so mad. I'm going into work tomorrow to see why there was this cock up. I've also made an appt with my dr to see if a letter can be written to explain that my absence from work in month 1 was pregnancy related, and therefore I shouldn't be penalised for it. Not sure what else I can do.

This isn't some little, two-bit, family run business, this is the NHS ffs. I've worked with them for 17 years. The reason they pay me to do the job I do is because I'm half the price of a consultant, they get their pound of flesh from me and at a cheap price too, but give nothing in return. And this is supposed to be the 21st century? Any ideas gratefully appreciated, especially anyone who managed to find a way around the strict '2 month' issue.

Sorry rant over. Gorgeous dresses everyone!

atalantis · 20/06/2007 09:23

Can't give any good advice, kinki, but have been having maternity leave/pay problems myself recently and have found the employment page on MN useful. There seem to be lots of employment lawyers hovering around there to help out! Why not try posting over there?

Pennypops · 20/06/2007 10:02

Kinki I'd certainly recommend seeing a lawyer even if its only for an initial consultation. I realise they don't come cheap but they should be able to establish fairly quickly if you have a case or not. Can't believe the NHS are being like this - they're quick enough to splash the cash in other somewhat more dubious circumstances.

Sophus - loved the comments re the extra 12ibs. I feel your pain - started to realise at the weekend that myt thighs were chubbing up in quite a big way - obviously prepping themselves for the weight they are going to be supporting over the next few weeks!!

MrsMar - I'm a Reading festival veteran as well just because I live there and could cheat and go home for a shower My love of the festival atmosphere never quite extended to the camping facilities - an outdoor girl I am not!!

Well ladies I felt the need to share the following story. On my train home last night (First Great Western 6.22 from Paddington) I was sitting in first class as it was the only way I could get a seat. I do this most days now and 9 times out of 10 the ticket inspectors let it slide as I am obviously rather large now. When I fessed up to not having a first class ticket a female ticket inspector had a right go at me and said in a REALLY shirty tone "being pregnant isn't an excuse for a free upgrade". I replied that I realised that but find it very uncomfy to stand in a hot crowded train for half an hour. She then claimed that there were seats at the opposite end of the train (there never are that is why people stand). So I apologised for not being up to pushing my way through 6 rammed carriages for a seat that prob wouldn't be there anyway. I got the following response:

"Walking is very good exercise when you are pregnant"

Fortunately I was livid at this point rather than tearful so I asked for her name which she refused to give me. I pointed out that the £4000 a year I pay for a season ticket should really entitle me to a seat anyway preggers or not and she said "nobody forces you to get the train every day - its your choice". Eventually I just said "are you going to force me to upgrade or not?" and she said no on this occasion she wouldn't so I asked her to stop bullying me and she stomped off in a huff.

Yay! I won and struck a blow for the pudding club!! Technically she was right I know but I was being perfectly polite and she was VILE. Plus in the past I have been told by train managers that First Great Western do let pregnant women sit in first class if its busy. The mood I was in I would have happily argued the toss all the way to Reading but really - why are people so incredibly horrid?????

canadianmum · 20/06/2007 10:32

pennypops - she was probably jealous of your gorgeous bump! Well done for standing up for yourself, she was obviously on a power trip or something - some people have no compassion. And yes I do believe that £4000 entitles you to a seat - preggo or not. One of the great things about being a SAHM is no commuting - it is hell on earth when pregnant.

Was feeling quite good about myself and my lovely round bump when the "barista" or whatever they are called in Caffe Nero asked me how long I had to go and practically fainted when I told her almost 3 months. She then told me how big I look and that it "must be a girl as you are so wide". I laughed it off but am now feeling rather fat and frumpy. And I thought I was looking quite "neat". She also blanched when I said it was my third. What a happy way to start the day......must go and find something to eat .

loobybump · 20/06/2007 10:55

Morning gurls :-)

Edie - i think estate agency is a good job to have but its soooo stressful and can be a very dirty game. people can really shock you in this job. I'm lucky as i work for an independant and not a cooperate agency we dont get targets and have to lie to get where we wanna be...! but their are good things to this job too. you meet lots of different people form all walks of life.

Mrs Mar- i didnt manage sleeping in a tent last night but i sat in my conservatory with a cup of tea and a bit of music playing kinda made me feel like i was at glastonbury!

Pennypops · 20/06/2007 11:04

Canadianmum big hugs to you!! How RUDE!! You just don't need that sort of comment do you? Hopefully the day can only get better! xx

Chattyhan · 20/06/2007 12:08

Loved looking at all the dresses i've only ever been to 2 weddings and don't know anyone getting married any time soon so maybe it's a blessing that i won't have to shop around! Looks like an expensive business - especially the ones Dal21 found!

Kinki - i had a simular issue with my first pregnancy because the family i nannyed for went on holiday for 6 weeks in my qualifying weeks and i don't get paid if i don't work! thankfully i still qualified for MA! I hope you find a solution!

As for your train journey Pennypops well done for standing up for yourself. I definately agree as a pregnant season ticket holder you should get a free upgrade. I had an awful train experience at Easter when i spent 3 1/2 hrs sat on the floor in the doorway with DS1 in the pushchair! Definately puts me off taking the train.

SeamonstEr - lol at the name change!!!

kinki · 20/06/2007 12:22

Tink, just wanted to say, I've read your other thread and added a comment. People can often voice their pov quite strongly, hope it's not all coming across too harshly for you. Just do what you want to do and what feels right for you and your dd. Noone can know what circumstances are like for you.

MrsMar · 20/06/2007 13:44

hello everyone!

well done penny on taking on the train guard! What a cow she was, I love it when they say "we won't take action this time" like they're being so generous, when really they know they're wrong!

Kinki - I hope you manage to get something sorted out soon, it seems so unfair you should suffer so much for something that was totally out of your control. Would the CAB be able to offer some advice? It is at least free... I definitely agree that some legal advice is the way forward, the legislation on maternity pay and leave is supposed to protect women, not leave them vulnerable. I would even perhaps contact your local mp... it may be that the legislation needs to be looked at again, it's not beyond the bounds of belief that other people are caught in a similar situation!

I'm really happy today - despite the fact that my builders didn't turn up until midday, grrrr!! I've told them I won't pay them if they finish late!!! No I'm happy cos my best friend has just told me she's pregnant!!! she was so desperate for a baby, she's had a terrible year, her mother died earlier this year after fighting cancer for 7 months, she's been so down (my friend that is) and just desperately wanted a baby. She just found out she's 9 weeks gone, she didn't even know, did the test on a whim when a friend asked her if she was pregnant! It's soooo cool cos her baby is due in January, so she'll finish work in December! I always thought it would be so nice to do maternity leave at the same time as someone else, and although I'll only have another four months off when she finishes, I'm so excited!!

Phew! I'm so giddy, I might even go easy on the builders!!!!

Have a lovely day everyone xxx

Tinkjon · 20/06/2007 14:11

Thanks, Kinki! It didn't bother me, I just thought it was funny how it seemed to cause so much controversy - I am half-tempted to tell them that we still use a baby monitor and sometimes even a highchair, LOL!

loobybump · 20/06/2007 15:11

does anyone know where i can get some maternity style skinny jeans?

Pennypops · 20/06/2007 15:29

Looby if you can still get into skinny jeans then I really wouldn't worry too much about your friends "bump and pants" pic!!

MrsMar what lovely news! Am v happy for you and your friend. I will only have my virtual friends for company while on leave as none of my friends are anywhere close to having kids!

dal21 · 20/06/2007 15:30

Loopy - came across this website when was looking for dresses last night and they had one of the biggest ranges of maternity jeans, including skinny. Very very expensive, but it is the only place I have come across skinny maternity jeans. The majority tend to be bootcut or baggy. I havent even spent this amount on non maternity jeans!
