Hope you all don't mind about the new thread. We've been AGONISING over the name

It's true, why do people have to dish out all the horror stories when they see you're pregnant? Since I became aware of that, I have made a conscious decision never to do that to anyone who's pregnant.

Instead, if ever I get drawn into a conversation about childbirth I'd rather share the bits that are lovely or funny even. It's much nicer to be positive I think.

Mrs M, you sound like you looked fab at the wedding! Something for me to aspire to.

Sorry to hear about those feet Sophus. At the weekend I had a browse at the shoes in M&S. They have got a big range of wide fitting shoes, and I made a mental note to remember that in case my feet swell! Sounds like you deserve someone to run you a foot bath and then a lovely massage.

Nice to hear you had a good weekend Chatty. Just what you deserve. Are things any better at home? I've been thinking of you and am hoping things work out for you. Take care.

kinki · 04/06/2007 18:02

I've got to have a glucose test too Edie. It's not that bad. I had gestational diabetes last time so they have to check this pregnancy just in case. The worse bit of the test for me was sitting still for 2 hours.

MrsMar · 04/06/2007 18:25

Bless you kinki!! I didn't look that great, I caught sight of myself at one point and I looked like my mum...... as she is now! arghh!!!

Lovely cot Laksa! I know what you mean about not being terribly excited about buying baby stuff, I'm such a mean mummy, I only get a kick out of buying stuff for me!me!me!

It is crummy all these horror stories isn't it??? In the end, after everyone banging on about their 25 hour labours with 4th degree tears and no painkillers, I told everyone I was going to have as many drugs as possible and hoped to sleep through the whole thing!

seamonster · 04/06/2007 18:34

How about I bang on with my 3 1/2 - 4 hours of labour, in full over three births then? a grand total of 4 stitches in all?

The problem is no-one who's had a baby likes to hear that some-one else had it 'easy'; therefore if it was 'easy' you tend not to shout about it as you soon get beaten down.

MrsFish · 04/06/2007 19:20

MrsMar - I have been eating remegel like they have gone out of fashion. Heartburn is horrendous, usually after I eat anything which is the opposite to you, everything triggers mine but the remegel are good and taste ok, I have tried gaviscon a few times with this pregnancy and the last but it is hideous in the tablet form and even moreso the liquid, makes me heave trying to drink the stuff.

I have had to take my wedding/engagement rings off due to swelling fingers, my feet and ankles haven't started yet but I am sure they will, i went up a whole shoe size last time.

Well we haven't had to buy any new equipment this time round as we have all the stuff still that ds is using, we have bought ds a new bed though for his new room, am going to try him in it at the weekend as it is his 2nd birthday on saturday and I want to get him settled into a new room and big boys bed, well in advance of this one turning up.

MrsFish · 04/06/2007 19:25

John Lewis seems to be a popular supplier, we had this one

seamonster · 04/06/2007 19:36

I take it you are all aware of the guidelines concerning keeping your baby in your room for 6 months?

MrsFish · 04/06/2007 19:42

I am aware and choose to ignore it.

MrsMar · 04/06/2007 20:25

me too, one thing I did choose to remember from all the horror stories was how noisy sleeping babies are!!! All snuffles and snoring! He'll get until he grows out of his moses basket I'm afraid. Don't have room in our bedroom for a cot as well so couldn't even if I wanted to!

FilBrit · 04/06/2007 20:39

I'm also really swollen and have been for ages, I think I last got my wedding ring on 6 weeks ago! Also none of my favourite shoes fit anymore, although I'm not complaining too much about that as it's a great excuse to shop for me !

Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting lots of unsolicited advice. At work today someone spent 20 mins giving me top tips on giving birth, she got so graphic at one point I got a bit scared . I think she meant to be nice but as she's never actually given birth, it was a little tricky to smile politely and listen!

i'm really jealous of all of you who are getting busy in John Lewis etc buying baby goodies, I've got lots of stuff from DD1 so can't really justify (or indeed afford! ) to buy lots of new things, although I stil love to look!

Chatty great to hear you had a good weekend, and to hear you sounding more happy.

FilBrit x

seamonster · 04/06/2007 20:47

I chose to ignore it (to a point) although I did buy a baby monitor with dc3 when hv tried to scare me into it. I actually complained to some-one for the first time in my life about her. When I'm out with dd (ds's are at school) I get women warning me that it's so much harder with two...

Tinkjon · 04/06/2007 21:35

I'm booked for a glucose test too, at 28 weeks, as I had gestational diabetes last time as well. Kinki, are you avoiding sugar this time round? I was at first (as my dietitian said I should) but then I don't think eating sugar can actually bring on the diabetes anyway so I'm starting to eat some here and there.

kinki · 04/06/2007 22:01

Tink, I'm not really avoiding sugar to be honest. Mind you, since being pregnant I haven't really had a sweet tooth, more of a carbohydrate-tooth. I'm pretty much of the mind what will be, will be. I'll cross that bridge if I need to. It's probably not the healthiest of attitudes to have though I must admit.

Hey, talking of which, is anyone having the same thoughts about alcohol as I am? Until that debate started last week I haven't really missed alcohol. But now everyone's got an opinion on whether its safe in pregnancy or not, I'm kind of craving it. I WANT A DRINK. I couldn't have cared less before last week. BUT NOW I WANT ONE.

trinity1 · 04/06/2007 22:08

Hi all, hope everyone is ok and not suffering too much in this heat. Am having an ok second pregnancy. DD is 1 next Saturday (16th) and am finding it a little difficult trying to juggle looking after an energetic monster as well as feeling generally knackered! Am not suffering too much with heartburn this time round. With DD from 5 months until the end had to eat my main meal by 3pm, then couldn't eat anything until the next day, and sleep propped up with 4 pillows!!!

DP and I have booked a 4d scan for this saturday. Am so excited. Can't wait to find out if we're definitely having a girl. Have to have another anti-D injection next week - think I'd rather give birth! Can anyone recommend somewhere we can get a decent tandem buggy from? Am having a mare trying to find one!

MrsMar · 04/06/2007 22:09

I had a glass of champers at the wedding I went to at the weekend. I have only had about 5 drinks since getting pregnant, I've not really wanted it, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be totally denied a drop of alcohol because of something that isn't even backed up by medical evidence. I'm with Zoe Williams on this one!

And of course you're craving it, it's because YOU MUSTN'T HAVE IT!!!! If tripe was banned in pregnancy we'd all be craving it, even though it's the most disgusting revolting stuff (I don't even know what it is!) ever! Ewwww!

toadstool · 04/06/2007 22:38

Right on MrsMar. On holiday in France last week I checked on the current advice re. drinking in pregnancy, hoping it would be the old line, 'Oh, you need a glass of red a day for the iron'. Er, no - it's ZERO alcohol intake from day one. DH's bottle of beer even had a little picture of a pregnant lady drinking on it, with a big diagonal bar across it. Perhaps cafe waiters are briefed to arrest any pg woman seen making that boozing gesture . I glanced at the food advice, and yep, mouldy cheese and pate are no longer OK either. Bang go another set of myths.

Yep, I'm also fan of Cobra and Becks alcohol free, dto a very low alcohol cider in Waitrose. Yum.
My LO is rolling around at set times, it seems - kicking around 5PM, lots of movement 2-4AM (oh, marvellous) and gentler movements around lunchtime.

Nettee · 05/06/2007 10:17

woke up with tummy pains today - enough to make me worry but a bath and some paracetamol seem to have done the trick. Finding it so hard to look after myself and rest enough as well as chasing round after DS and the two dogs, let along go to work - any idea when life will get easier???? Maybe when dc have gone to school? but then everyone says it only gets harder......

Glad to hear the french ladies are getting the same advice as us - not that the zero alcohol thing seems to be based on any evidence.

my bump kicks more at night too..... lots of babies on austrailian time I think. They were talking at toddler group about arranging things so that the baby is fed and sorted before the toddler wakes up in the morning - sounds great in theory not so sure how you talk the baby into it or when the mummy and daddy get any sleep

amyclaramum · 05/06/2007 11:33

Hi Everyone ! Sorry haven't had time to post for a while - it was half term last week so was busy with the 2 dd's. I am feeling really fat and tired at the moment and hands and feet rather swollen . I was thinking of buying some larger rings and a new watch as nothing fits anymore ! And as for shoes - kiss anything with heels goodbye - i'm permanently in flip flops and wide sandals! We are going to a party next Saturday - 70's and 80's theme fancy dress - what on earth am I going to wear !!??
Has anyone else had leg cramps in the middle of the night ? I keep waking up with them and flying out of bed with the pain startling my Dh's slumbers ! Anyway hope you all have a good week and enjoy the sunshine.

seamonster · 05/06/2007 12:52

I have starter to get them, I find just stretching my foot up towards me makes it go without getting out of bed.
try not to point yur toes, it will set one off.

MrsMar · 05/06/2007 13:13

Hi y'all!

amyclaramum - get yourself a maxi dress, very margot from the good life! Plus you can still wear your flip flops!! There are loads in groovy seventies swirly patterns, and then you can go bonkers with the blue eye shadow and big flicky hair!! Ooooh I am jealous, I do love a good fancy dress!

I'm not sure I can bring myself to drink alcohol free beer. I can't believe the French are starting to clamp down so much on the whole drinking thing. I've been clinging to the belief French midwives are still telling women to have a glass of champagne a day during pregnancy, and three or four when they go in to labour!

I hope the tummy aches get better Nettee, perhaps it's a bit of a growth spurt. I seem to get one a week, a day of crampy muscle aching all around my bump.

I'm not getting much movement at night, well not enough to wake me up anyway. I'm getting fewer actual kicks, more like squirming around, with the odd kick so hard it makes me jump! My poor dh hasn't felt the baby yet. He hasn't got the patience to wait for a kick, as the baby seems to be psychic as he stops moving as soon as I or dh put our hands there. Of course, it could also have something to do with the fact there's rather a lot of fat covering my tummy so the movements are less easy to feel!

Have a lovely day everyone, I'm off to sit in the sun with Grazia magazine and my lunch. Gotta get some rays even if I have to come back in to the coldest, darkest office in the world afterwards!!
