Don'tknowmyarse.. - I'm a bit of a hospital girl myself - but only 'coz I like the idea of having all the technology around. (And I have the sneaking suspicion that I'd be the one doing the clear up afterwards as DH would be crap!!) If everything else is looking routine & your MW is willing to support you, then I'd go for it. Most important things are that you're happy & both safe. As long as you're only 20 mins from the hospital and it would be easy to get out of the house mid-labour, if you had to - why shouldn't you have the environment you want? Having said that, my second stage for my DD was only 7 mins long - so I'll probably be knocking at the hosp door on my due date, with catcher's mitt in hand....!!

On fanjo subject - would echo thoughts on hirsuteness - v scary (esp when you're a ginger). Also alarmed by how sad fanjo now looks - anyone else's got an expression like Clement Freud??

notsolilKel · 03/05/2007 10:39

good morning - goodness though, I must say, I feel a bit queasy having opened up my MN window and first thing I see in the morning is 'hairy fanjos.' Made we wince, it did! Can we not avoid such visuals please?

Sorry, mite touchy today. DS screaming 3-4:30 in the morning (teeth). Off to catch up now!

Seansgirl · 03/05/2007 10:44

West coaster two questions:
Clement Freud?
and you can see yours? [astonised emoticon]

riabutterflew · 03/05/2007 10:50

Morning all. (Again). Two cupboards done - cleaning the pringle crumbs out of the drawers now, but having a potty break (need to be out of nappies by LO being here - DS2 you understand, not me!) Any thoughts on the christmas cake from the year before last? Fruit cake doesn't go off does it?

DKMA (my DH loves your name BTW). My opinion (to give you the other view, but PLEASE don't shout at me) is that I wouldn't have a home birth - ever. I have been very lucky with the other two as I managed to get the birthing pool both times at the hospitals I used (although DS1 was a bit of a fight as the MW was just finishing her shift and couldn't be arsed, but I got it and it was fab - or as fab as something so damned undignified can be!). Having DS2 was a lot more stressful (I think I have said before that the MW had never done a waterbirth and was reading the instructions and taking advice from DH! Bless her - she was fab too. But I got in too early and everything slowed down and then he got stuck (awkward little bugger), and I left it too late for extra pain relief!!! And I am glad I was in hospital for that too. But being on the ward afterwards was not so good.
I am a bit worried this time as I have been told that it's possible I will get sent home almost before I've finished pushing (aren't nurses marvellous!) and I don't know how I will cope with that as have stayed in two nights both times previously and DS2 went blue and had to have a tube down his throat on the last morning I was in (and I thought he was just having trouble feeding, I didn't realise what was happening). Having said that I appreciate I have done it twice before and should not be wasting already stretched resources. I need to discuss this with the MW when I see her next.
Fortunately there are no right and wrong answers with any of this and we all just have to find what we are comfortable with by having informed discussions as it is definitely a personal experience and cannot be done to please anyone else.

END OF SELF-OPINIONATED SERMON!

riabutterflew · 03/05/2007 10:52

sorry for the excessively long post

riabutterflew · 03/05/2007 10:58

Just been thinking about hairy fanjos. Do you think stitching is easier if not hairy? Have any of your MWs/A/N classes had an opinion?

hollyandalice · 03/05/2007 11:01

Oh FFS !!

Hope you are having fun potty training ria! I was planning to have dd done by the time lo arrives, but that really isn't going to happen!

Big thanks BTW to those of you who offered some thoughts on my 'section or not to section' self-debate. It really is like the night before your wedding, the doubts about all your well-made plans...I must just try to stick with the programme and hope I make it in safety to a calm, planned delivery on the 25th. No traumas please.

Re homebirth - my personal (and admittedly very slanted) view is that I'd never be able to advise it for a first birth, as you've no idea if your body is one of the lucky ones to deliver babies easily or not. If I'd had a home birth I would have no DS now!! He needed all the medical support of the hospital ASAP. There was no advance warning of this - I was supposedly 'healthy' and 'normal' and was hoping for waterbirth. The thought that I could have lost my boy forever is so frightening to me, that I could never recommend doing without immediate access to all possible assistance. Just in case.

That being said, I do have a mate who delivered her first at home, in a pool, with no pain relief, but I think she must be exceedingly blessed. I can completely understand your preferences though, so I guess I'd say, go to the hospital but try like hell to make it the way you want. Take a birthing pool, your own pillows (they really are nice to have), music (I had an ipod player, was great), try like hell to get an amenity/single room, and bring earplugs and facemask in case you do get surrounded by madness. Sorry not what you want to hear, just my story... Good luck!!

Seansgirl · 03/05/2007 11:13

Holly! stay calm.

BadZelda · 03/05/2007 11:18

Ignore her Holly - she's just a troublemaker I think...this is the one that started the 'mumsnet is shit' thread of a few days ago?

I'm not here honest - just having 11 o'clock break!

hollyandalice · 03/05/2007 11:21

I'm going to go off MN for the rest of the day coz if I stay on here I'll get myself in trouble.

Thanks for the advice on the homebirthing thing.
I am going to ring the hospital now and ask about their policy on bringing my own pool - and take it from there.
Likel - Your story scares the shit out of me - and I'd just never forgive myself - so am gona try really hard to get the hospital thing how I want it.

Holly - just had a look at that link - It always seems to be the same people having a moan - I personally can't be arsed with them - they are probably the kind of people I'd avoid in RL - so I'm gona avoid them on here too!

sputnik · 03/05/2007 12:10

Been reading the hairy fanjos thread, am now in fear of emergency c-section and the dry razor. I get terrible rashes if I try and use a razor, they shaved a little off the top when I had my amnio and I was itchy for at least a month.

So Lilkel, if you do go for the section maybe a thorough wax before would be a good idea?

Ria, I'd chuck the cake!

Oh, and BadZ (not that you're here, obviously ), the link to the pic of your DD just asked me to login to Yahoo, can you put it on your profile, I'm curious now.

mytwocents · 03/05/2007 12:16

Afternoon lovely ladies, my goodness what a fuss over very little! Really think some people need to fill their time with more constructive pastimes than having a go at us!!!!
Not time left to catch up now

xx

Daisybump · 03/05/2007 12:23

Sputnik...if you do need an emergency c-section what they use to shave you will be the last thing on your mind. I didn't even realise it had been done, cos I'd had the spinal by that time and didn't feel a thing, and they only shaved the top inch or so...but it depends just how hairy your fanjo is I suppose . I didn't even realise they had done it until it got itchy growing back....but then again that could have been the scar healing too?? don't worry about it is my advice.

Ria...if it was last christams...maybe, but the one before that....chuck it away .

BadZelda · 03/05/2007 12:23

Lunchtime now - mumsnet profile uploader thingummy isn't working so I whacked it up on my websty instead: here

riabutterflew · 03/05/2007 12:36

re cake, I suppose if no-one ate it two years running they aren't likely to now! (I CAN THROW IT AWAY, I CAN...) What is it with plastic storage tubs and their lids? I have loads of lids but no boxes. Why oh why?

Time for p/group run. Be good girls!

mytwocents · 03/05/2007 12:40

Just thought i'd share....

I have a very useful remmington strimmer thingy, I'm currently using it to keep trimmed down below - by feel - or sometimes using a mirror ( and trying not to drop it down the loo!!) It has a safety thing on it so you won't cut yourself and I recommend it!

I had my first NCT class on tues btw and the other women and their partners were lovely! We felt very comfortable talking about hairy fanjos, postnantal depression, all sorts! I'm reall glad I went and will be recommending mn to them too....

mytwocents · 03/05/2007 12:42

Ria my mum used to serve christmas cake that was nearly 2 years old, never harmed us...
some say it improves with age...

sputnik · 03/05/2007 12:44

Daisy, it's not the actual shaving I'm worried about, it's the recovery time

Daisybump · 03/05/2007 12:45

Ria...I have boxes but no lids.....swapsies

sputnik · 03/05/2007 12:46

Nice pic BadZ, she looks very soulful.
