alice have a great hol!!

nezi-i had hyperemesis with my other pregnancies, luckily not with this one.spent most of early pregnancy with my others in the hospital and on a drip.with my last pg it lasted until the day before she arrived.i never found any miracle cure for it,but did find if i ate something when i started feeling queasy,i wasnt too bad.

do any of you know anything about IBS?was going to ask alice, but shes goe on hols!!its just when i rang mw before i saw gp last week, she asked if i had it.i said no,as no ones ever mentioned it before.but since i finished my course of antibiotics, ive had teh runs again.it feels like my insides are cramping up and it really hurts, then i go to the loo,and its ok.sometimes i go the next day and have the same pain, but sometimes its a couple of days before i go again.and again i get teh awful cramping pain.dont really want to go to my gp incase tehy say theres nothing they can do apart from give me paracetamol to take.just hoping someone has some advice!

anyway, got my 2 eldest off today, their school finished yesterday,so im hoping that dd3 will want to play with them instead of climb about all over me today!!

hope you all have a good day!

Hi Buffy

My sister has IBS, its stress related, with her anyway and she gets terrible stomach cramps and urgency as in if she can't get to a toilet in time she wouldn't be able to stop herself pooing (sorry if TMI!). She's really suffered with it over the years and yes things like ABs can really set her off. But then ABs can cause diarrhea and cramping even if you haven't got IBS so unless you have a history of bowel problems its more likely a side effect of the ABs than IBS.

She copes with a careful diet, lots of fibre and vegies and very little processed food and making sure she drinks plenty and gets lots of exercise.

Hope that helps I can ask her for some more info if there's anything else you want to know

Pheebe · 25/05/2007 08:48

Quick question for everyone, my bump seems to have vanished this morning. Well, not quite vanished but it seems to be alot smaller. Bub is still wriggling so all ok there but is that normal???

Pheebe · 25/05/2007 09:11

Buffy
Just spoke to my sister, she takes something called fibogel sometimes. Its basically a fibre drink. She makes it up with OJ, she says it doesn't taste too great but is good when she's really loose and crampy just like you describe! She says you can get it off prescription at the chemist. Can't imageine there'd be a problem in pregnancy as its just a fibre drink nothing else. Might help

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 10:09

hi pheebe, firstly with your bump, maybe baby is laying more in your back and that could be why your bumps not as big??

my probs started before i took the antibiotics.i was going to the loo and everytime had the cramps, needed to go there and then, had the runs.i was like it for two weeks before i went to gp.and now ab's have finished im still like it.went on the nhs direct website and looking at the symptoms for ibs,its the same as what im getting.been thinking about what ive been eating etc,and i think it might be down to dairy products.didnt really eat much yesterday but did have a macdonalds milkshake,so that could be the culprit!!it said on the nhs direct thing that you can get the cramps, diahorea, constipation, nausea, tiredness, feeling like you still need to go to the loo when youve been, pain in left side, headaches.most of those can be put down to me being pregnant though!!!

im going to try to avoid dairy for the next couple of days, and also not eat much bread (said it can be wheat intolerance) and see if that helps.think if it does then i might see gp.not that they'll do anything, our gps are pretty useless, but i suppose there isnt much you can do for ibs, apart from take things like fibrogel like your sis.

thanks for your advice pheebe.

betsycoe · 25/05/2007 10:13

Hi Buffy,
I've had IBS for 15 years. It's funny that you should mention ABs. My IBS has been much better whilst I've been pregnant. However, I've just finished a course of ABs for a kidney infection and it has returned!!

Maybe the ABs kill off some of the bacteria that help with digestion? I'm no Dr so it's just a guess....

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 10:17

hi betsy, how do you cope with it,especially having it for so long?ive been in agony the last few weeks,so god knows how you manage having it for 15 years!

like i say,i started having probs before i started on the ab's.whilst i was on them i only had the runs once, but have continued since i finished them.last night the pain was so bad when i went to bed i was crying when i went to the loo!as soon as ive been the pains gone, but my stomach feels liek its raw (sorry cant think of any other way to explain how it feels)

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 10:19

just read that, didnt make sense!!i went to bed last night because of pains in my tum,got really bad and felt like i needed the loo, went and sat there crying because it hurt so much.think that explains it better!!

Pheebe · 25/05/2007 10:20

No problem Buffy, staying off dairy for a bit sounds like a good idea. Breads also another thing that can trigger my sisters so maybe try cutting that out also

Betsy, thats exactly what happens. Whenever I have to take ABs I always try and take some yakult or some such as the same time/after as they always give me jip

About the bump...its back! felt a giant wiggle and flop and hey presto. Only just 18 weeks today, bit worried now that this one's gonna be a monster

Pheebe · 25/05/2007 10:22

buffy, that sounds exactly like my sister. She gets 'episodes' that last a few days to a few weeks so its not absolutely constant. I'm sure Betsy will be able to give you a better first hand picture...over to you betsy...

{{{{hugs buffy}}}} for tummy ache

betsycoe · 25/05/2007 10:24

Hi Buffy,
I'd be careful cutting out foods for the sake of it as IBS is triggered by different foods for different people.

I've also got asthma and eczema and if you read the web sites they usually advise to cut out dairy and wheat.

However, I ended up getting referred to a consultant who did a full set of food tolerance tests and found that I'm affected by tomatoe, cirtrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi fruit and oats!

Nerves are also a big trigger for my IBS. I do a lot of running and always get a bad stomach before/whilst running a race (not pleasant when you're half way around a half marathon and there are no loos to be seen!)

When I first started to suffer from IBS I was perscribed peppermint oil capsules. They didn't do anything for me but my sister swares by them...

betsycoe · 25/05/2007 10:33

In answer to your other question Buffy, you sort of get used to it.

The cramps can be awful (especially if you trapped wind - sorry if TMI) but rubbing your stomach and regularly moving position can help to get things moving !

Alcohol is another trigger for me but this hasn't been an issue recently

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 11:55

thanks pheebe and betsy.

does taking probiotics work then?like yakult and actimel?

i think i do have some allergies to some foods, because recently i noticed some things i ate afterwards my tongue swelled up and i ahd red sore patches.the soreness lasts about an hour and then its ok,but the patches are there for a few days.i noticed that happened after i ahd a cream scone with strawberry jam and also baked beans.oh and orange juice.so ive stayed clear of them since and my tongues been ok.

am definately cutting back on the bread, and cutting dairy out altogether.ive got gilberts disease (fat grows on my liver) so im not supposed to eat dairy anyway, but didnt know how else to get my calcium.

FloriaTosca · 25/05/2007 12:07

Buffy, I've been getting the same symptoms as you since 12wks...doctor said I had a blockage with "break-through diarhoea" (probably wrong spelling but you know what I mean) Well there has been no sign of a "blockage" shifting and the cramps/pain esp.from the wind was horrid so of course I thought I was heading for another m/c..she put me on a syrupy laxative (lactolade or something like that)that didnt help much, but changed to Fibogel 3 weeks ago and things are a lot better... not perfect but better. Excersise, especially swimming seems to help. Drinking fizzy drinks makes the wind worse. (I was knocking back ginger beer for nausea but the wind is worse than the sickness!)Dont know if any of that will help.Hope you are feeling better soon.

betsycoe · 25/05/2007 12:12

The probiotics haven't worked for me, but everyone is different so they might work for you?

Tofu, Kale, Brazil nuts, almonds and dried figs are all rich in calcium. I'm sure there are loads of other dairy/bread free alternatives out there.

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 12:14

floria i found i was the same if i drank diet coke.im now totally just drinking water, diluted orange juice or cranberry juice.

do you get the wind runbling really loudly in your tum?i feel it going along the right side, over my bump and down the left.when it gets to the top of my bump thats when it starts hurting.

going to send dh out to get me some probiotic yoghurts and see if that helps.hate yoghurt though!!

buffythenappyslayer21 · 25/05/2007 12:15

betsy its funny you mention brazil nuts, ive been fancying them all day!!wasnt sure though if your ok eating them i pregnancy.i know ive had 10 zillion kids, but ive always stayed clear of nuts!

PolarMummy · 25/05/2007 15:16

Buffy I also have IBS so you have my sympathies, as Betsy says you just kind of learn to cope with it. Unfortunately it can be one of those things when the Doc will tell you you have IBS when they can't find anything else wrong! For me its mainly white bread that triggers it can't eat it at all fine with brown though! Also first thing in the morning I would be bad, a lot of mornings I will have to go to the loo part way through my breakfast, I still don't believe that the food could make its way through me that quickly but it does seem to!

Feel free to ask any questions, not sure I will be able to answer them all and as Betsy has said everyone is different anyway! One thing I haven't had to cope with during this pregnancy is constipation though, might not "go" for a couple of days but it always resolves itself so I am tyring to look on the bright side Just make sure you always know where a toilet is though

PolarMummy · 25/05/2007 15:19

Oh also meant to say I know what you mean about feeling raw, its like having indigestion but right the whole way through!

ejt1764 · 25/05/2007 18:40

Afternoon all - you poor things with tum problems - I really feel for you!

I tend to find that if I have antibiotics I tend to get the squits and thrush - the ABs don't just kill off the bad bugs, but the good ones too!

Hope you're feeling better soon, buffy.

Physio was interesting yesterday. She gave me exercises to help me fight off the SPD, but told me that as soon as it gets too bad, to contact her for crutches. She's shown me the best position to sleep in - 2 pillows under my head (only usually sleep on 1 low one), 1 under my trunk to support my spine and bump, and 2 between my legs. She said I'd got the right idea with the beanbag, but that it's not providing enough support.
The coccyx problem is another thing though - it's probably caused by my pelvic floor muscles being too tight (!!!!! ) - but she can't do anything about it until after I've delivered. Feel better in that she can do something about it - even if it's not right now - but am going to be condemned to another 6 months or so of excruciating pain when I sit.

Very glad we've got to this point - it's half term next week, so I can rest (and write some of my reports!)

happy bank holiday weekend everybody!

FloriaTosca · 25/05/2007 19:45

Strange conversation but, I find it worst where my appendix used to be, in fact if I didnt know for certain that it had been removed Id swear I had appendicitis! Then it moves from right to left just underneath my bump and sometimes back again...fortunately it isnt as painful on the left..but it can take hours to finally get rid of it.I think the probiotic yoghurt could be a good idea..if you can bear it..personally I like yoghurt and drinks like yakult but it must be tough if you dont. For me the best thing is definately the fibogel...I think it is available over the counter and it is perfectly safe in pregnancy, definately worth a try and cant do any harm.{smile]

MrsFish · 25/05/2007 21:30

I'm off on my hols tomorrow for a week so I won't be around. Good luck to anyone with scans in the coming week, I'll try and catch up when I get back

Hope you all have a good bank holiday

buffythenappyslayer21 · 26/05/2007 12:57

hi everyone!

polar thats exactly how it feels!!couldnt think of any other way to describe it,but yes its like indigestion all the way through my insides.

floria, when i first get teh pain, its starts at teh right side right at teh bottom, and does feel like it where my appendix are (not sure if ive still got them though because someone once told me when you have a cs they remove them anyway!so dont know if they are still there-but thats where the apin starts)and it goes around my bump over to the left.theres always alot of rumbling like wind popping aswell.when it gets to my elft then it absolutely kills until ive been to the loo.

have been ok the past 2 days now.havent been to the loo and have been watching what im eating.havent had any dairy (apart from marg on a sandwich yesterday but there was hardly any there!!) and i do feel ok.going to get some actimel today (think its probiotic) dont like the look of yakult!!and see how i go from there.

i cant believe how many people ive spoken to that have ibs!!and i cant believe how long some of you have had it for!makes me feel a wimp for moaning about having this for a few weeks!!

polar,im going to try brown bread instead of white.i did read somewhere that bread can be the cause of it,so its worth cutting it out to see if it makes a difference.

anyway, hope you are all feeling ok.

ejt glad your physio was helpful.did she give you a support belt?mine gave me one but it was a narrow one and didnt do any good.(that was with last pregnancy) and i saw another physio who gave me a wider one.have bought one this time off ebay and mw said to start wearing it if i ahve any probs before i see her a wk on monday.hoep your spd starts easing soon, and that you dont have to have crutches.

right im off,oh have a great hol mrsfish!!

ahve a great weekend everyone!!!

j20baby · 27/05/2007 10:37

its been quiet lately, hi to all those that are not on hol, and to those that are

hope everyone is well, and all those with ibs and poorliness are feeling better, i get dodgy stomachs quite often, and its awful, usually its nerves with me though.
