Congrats and commiserations at the same time Apricott, at least your lo is happy and healthy just try and focus on that {hugs}

karlou · 24/05/2007 15:00

Many congrats to all those who have had their scans, mine still seems ages away! Spoke to my GP yesterday - she can't find my blood test results, the hospital might have lost them! She's meant to be chasing them down today. She did tell me my AFP result was good though; I can't remember the exact number but it was something like 1 in 4,600. I'll be over 35 in October so that was reassurring.
I've been having the weird dreams too - my strangest was a few nights ago. I dreamt I was in labour but the pushing stage wasn't going well so they told me I'd need an assisted delivery. I asked if they were going to use forceps or the ventouse. They said neither, they had a new midwife with an alternative technique. This midwife turned out to be a wolf - who would pull the baby out with it's teeth!!! Apparently it was much less traumatic for the baby. I was very relaxed about it too!

alicet · 24/05/2007 15:20

Hope your physio goes well ejt after all the wait!!!

karlou thats a very wierd dream!!! I persist in having erotic ones about very strange people - quite disconcerting!!

karlou · 24/05/2007 15:27

LOL! I've only had the one erotic dream but it was about Richard Armitage so I'm not complaining!!

Apricott · 24/05/2007 15:32

Thanks for all the kind words and virtual hugs. And thanks for the offer of info Alice - I'll take you up on it nearer the time if need be.

Just been for a lovely cake with a lovely friend at work and have things in a much better perspective all round. Oh, the healing powers of a fruit tart!

I need to go and get some actual work done now .

Oh, while I think of it - don't fret if you don't hear anything from me for a while. I'm off to London to pick up MIL tomorrow and then we're taking her on a wee tour of the South West - Bath, Avebury, Stonehenge, Lyme Regis, Wells Cathedral, hedgerows, villages, thatched roofs, pubs, warm ale - that sort of thing. DH reckons she'll love it all! Don't suppose I'll be back on MN before the end of next week at least.

Hope you all have lovely Bank Holiday weekends! x

karlou · 24/05/2007 15:37

I live in the SW Apricott - in Dorset. We've driven past Stonehenge loads of times but I've never actually been there!

FloriaTosca · 24/05/2007 15:49

Glad to hear that baby is well Apricott but sorry for the bleed and the low lying placenta, at the risk of repeating everyone else I hope it moves. Try to take it easy and keep your feet up as much as poss while doing your sightseeing tour..I once spent a whole glorious summer working for a touring opera company travelling the south of England from Canterbury to Portsmouth in my caravan with my dog...it was bliss! I hope you have a fabulous time and that your m-i-l adores it.Relax and enjoy!the way this thread moves you are going to have a lot of reading to do when you get back!!!

Apricott · 24/05/2007 15:50

I'll tell you what it's like close up !

Apricott · 24/05/2007 15:51

thanks Floria.

Just to clarify - that last was meant for Karlou re Stonehenge.

Right - I'm off now. Bye!!

Nezi without question I would go back to your doc and get signed off. Your work will just have to cope without you. Actually they can't make you go back to part time and are legally obliged to give you hours and conditions that you can cope with and don't endanger either you or your baby. But it sounds as though you're really struggling and its just not worth it. If you can't face being signed off until your baby is born how about suggesting 2-4 weeks off to see if that helps. But DON'T feel bad about it - you and your baby are so so much more important than work.

I was off for the last 3 months of my last pregnancy and really fought against it for ages as I felt like I was taking the piss. ALthough I would prefer not to need to if people thought I needed it this time I would go without question. Not because I have become a skiver but because now I have a son I realise I would never take any risks to my baby's health however small.

Good luck - will be thinking of you

alicet · 24/05/2007 18:32

Not sure they can make you make up the hours you lose being off sick either although appreciate its difficult to work to rule like this particularly when they have been supportive till now. Easier for all for you to go off - you might find work prefer this anyway as at least they then know where they stand. Funnily enough you can let people down and mess them about more by trying to do the right thing and go in. This was what finally made me decide to go off last time.

ejt1764 · 24/05/2007 19:06

nezi - twas me who suffered with the dreaded hyperemesis ... they cannot make you go part time. Employment law forbids it.

Also, any sickness that is due to pregnancy cannot be treated as normal sick leave - except with regards to sick pay. They cannot count it against your sick leave as normal - that would be sexual discrimination, apparently.

Useful factsheet here

The pregnancy one is the one you want - I feel a little judicious highlighting and giving of the factsheet to the person at work in charge of hr would help!

Sorry you are feeling so revolting - unfortunately hyperemesis can come back ... fortunately, I'm not being sick all day - it's very much limited to first thing ... I was serenading those in the ladies this morning!
Here's a link to the blooming awful hyperemesis support group - invaluable advice and tips - and the reassuring knowledge that you're not the only one.

alicet · 24/05/2007 19:06

Sure they will be happy to sign you off. I worried about that too but I certainly found they were more than happy when I was struggling. Will be thinking of you and hoping you feel better soon x

HonorMatopoeia · 24/05/2007 19:19

Nezi, sorry to hear you're having a rough time, I understand how you feel about not taking the mick at work but, thanks mostly to some very good advice from this thread, I'm beginning to realise what everyone has said, you and the baby are the most important people here. Take care of yourself.
Alicet could I be really cheeky and ask where you have found info on making c sections more personnal? I had an emergency c section with my Dd and was quite traumatised by the whole thing. There is mention of it maybe being in my best interests to go elective this time and I'd really like to feel more in charge and as if I'm giving birth!

HonorMatopoeia · 24/05/2007 19:56

Nezi - you sound just like me! We drag ourselves in when we really shouldn't, you're rightwe're just not used to putting ourselves first. I've started to try and think of it as putting baby first and slowly I'm raising a large middle finger in the direction of my boss! feels very liberating!

alicet · 24/05/2007 21:56

HMP don't mind you asking at all. I have spent a lot of time searching here for threads on sections and vbac. Someone I was chatting to sent me her birth plan from an elective section which is really interesting. I can send i on to you if you want to CAT me or send me your email address - might be after I get back from holiday though so don't think I'm ignoring you!!! I had a book too which has a chapter on c-sections called blooming birth: how to get the pregnancy and birth you want. Costs about £10 from amazon. Also various websites - most of the favourites are on my old computer and I haven't got round to transferring them yet but a couple I have on this one I'll put below - can't remember which of these are about making it more personal or advice on how to choose which way to go but I'll stick them all in in case you find them helpful! Think most of these have been links others on here have posted.
www.childbirthconnection.org/
www.guardian.co.uk/family/story/0,,1656246,00.html
www.caesarean.org.uk/articles/VBACScarMonitoring.html
I have also been recommended a book by Michael Odent called 'the caesarean' - again can get from amazon for about £15. Afraid I can't remember the context in which I was recommended this and don't have it yet but I will get it when I get round to it.

Hope thats helpful!!

alicet · 24/05/2007 21:58

OK ladies this is probably my last post for about 10 days - hope you all have a lovely bank holiday and week! Good luck to all of those having scans next week - I'll be thinking of you! Will set aside a massive chunk of time to catch up when I get back!!!

Take care all x
