Buffy - missed the bit about your ds. I think that what you did was reasonable. I saw a kid throw a stone at a train I was on and considered calling the police except I didn't have my mobile and wasn't sure anyway which at station they had been. Better for the police to have a word about something relatively minor than turn up for real over something more serious... Hope it helps...

buffythenappyslayer21 · 21/05/2007 13:28

thanks mump, teh lorry what went by was a huge one, weve got the fair arriving and it was one with rides on.so it was a big one.if the driver had swerved he couldve hit another car passing or ended up in the park with kids in.i wanted ds to see how serious it could be.the policeman practically said word for word what i had said to ds,but it got through to ds coming from a policeman!

when dh was a fireman, they kept getting called to fires on an estate in porthmadog which is known to be a bit rough.every time they went, they were attacked by kids throwing rocks at teh fore engine.one broke a wondow and dhs colleage was injured.these kids were between 7 and 12 years old.i wouldve been horrified if that had been one of my kids.teh fire brigade now arent allowed on the estate unless there is a police escort.so these little hooligans have now put people in danger as the foremen have to wait for the police to arrive.

HonorMatopoeia · 21/05/2007 14:08

Hello all, I'll echo what many have said...Wow this thread moves fast! Have spent the last half hour catching up but my poor brain can't remember all the right names so please excuse me for not being really specific!

ejt - thank you for the car seat recommendation, looks good. Peugeots are a pain aren't they? Wish someone had mentioned that before I bought one!

To all those having scans this week-good luck, hope all goes really well for you .

Buffy- I also echo what ejt said, as a teacher I am driven mad by parents who make extravagant allowances for their children with behavioural problems. We tend to find that if this happens the behaviour escalates and far from being a special need, just becomes learnt behaviour- very difficult to crack! You did completely the correct thing.

I've had the most eventful weekend. Ended up being rushed into hospital yesterday as I collapsed (in Tescos of all places ).Was out for fifteen minutes apparently, thank god Dh was with me, he said I'd have hit the floor with a hugebang if he hadn't been there to catch me! Came to strapped to a paramedics trolley. Spent 6 hours in A and E, they said I was ok after monitoring everything for a while. Poor Junior Doctor struggled to find the foetal heartbeat so ended up going to local hospital today and waiting for another 2 hours for someone to listen to baby. I'm knackered from all the waiting! Baby seems absolutely fine and I've been told to take it extra easy and avoid prolonged standing - someone really needs to explain the teaching job to these people!!

Oops, this was another long one - sorry! Hope evryone is well x

Mumpbump · 21/05/2007 14:11

Scary stuff happening all around at the moment, it seems! HMP - I seem to recall that EJT got signed off for a long time in the early stages of her pg because it was easier for the school to get a supply teacher and cover the costs if she was away for a couple of months. Is it worth exploring this possibility? Both my parents were teachers and I agree that resting and teaching are not compatible...

HonorMatopoeia · 21/05/2007 15:10

It's a lovely thought mumpbump but my Head sounds on a par with ejt's for severe inflexible-ness! She will sneer at the fact I've had today off work and if I take too much time off she'll start pushing for me to start my maternity leave early instead of going off sick. I know she can't force me but she can make life unbearable. I'm very much looking forward to leaving that place, I'm not planning to return after mat. leave!

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:09

HMP I was signed off for then last 3 months of my last pregnancy as I kept fainting while I was meant to be operating. Despite the fact I was fine the rest of the time it was easier for them to get full time cover than try and just cover some sessions. Really fought it for ages as it went totally against my mentality but in retrospect really glad I did. My health and the baby's health just so so much more important than a job!

Anyway - had my scan! All went well and we are expecting a healthy little boy!!! Really really pleased. Had quite wanted a girl this time to have one of each and had been worried that I might be a bit disappointed if it was a boy (even though I knew I would get over that pretty quick). But it will actually be really lovely for ds to have a little brother particularly as they will be so close (20 months different). SO feeling pretty chuffed about it all!! Also very pleased they could see as she said she was about to say she couldn't tell! In the end it was pretty obvious and I spotted it just before she said....

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:10

By the way HMP they can't make you go on mat leave early. If you are on sick for pregnancy related reasons your mat leave kicks in at 36 weekd but they can't make you go off any earlier so don't let her try!!!

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:13

Buffy - you did the right thing with your DS.

My sister and I had to get my Mum arrested 4 years ago (very long story that I won't go into other than to say it was for her own safety). My Mum ended up with a night in the cells, a caution and it did affect our relationship for some time.

However, a few years later my Mum has turned her life around. I'm so proud of her she has stopped drinking and is just finishing her first year of a BSc at university (top of her class by all accounts). We had a talk recently where she thanked us for getting the police involved as she hadn't realised how out of control she had become.

You've done the right thing by your son and one day he might even thank you!

Mumpbump · 21/05/2007 16:17

Good news re: the scan, Alicet! I feel exactly like you about the sex so we're not finding out which means we won't know the final score until all the lo's have actually arrived.

MrsFish · 21/05/2007 16:23

Another Boy - Congratulations

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:33

mumpbump we nearly didn't find out because of that! But dh and I are much too impatient for that. Plus knew if I was disappointed would get over it pretty quick!

Now we have the prob of names. We really struggle as we have very different ideas! I love Jake but dh hates it. He likes Sean and I'm similarly not keen! We both like Ben but not good with our surname (BenT!!!). Any suggestions? We like short and simple names that can't get shortened. Please help!!!! At this rate he will be Sam - which we love but it's our ds's name already!!

PolarMummy · 21/05/2007 16:41

AliceT congrats with the scanI am glad everything went well, Mumpbump I am with you, I am not planning to find out sex either I want the surprise

MrsFish I hope you didn't think I was criticising you for not doing the cleaning etc, I have plaques up in my house which say, "Dust experiments in progress, please do not disturb the samples" and "Life's too short for Housework" and I really believe in the second one, I do the absolute minimum. My Dh loves when I invite my family round for a meal because I tidy and clean the house for them coming if they arrive unannounced they get to see the house in its true state

betsycoe · 21/05/2007 16:46

Congratulations Alice,
we decided our boys name (Seth William) 4 years ago!! That can't be shortened (but judging from the reactions to it so far you either love or hate it).

We took forever to find a girls name that we both like but settled on Edith Mary.

We should know tomorrow if the hours of deliberating over a girl's name was worth the effort!

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:46

My house would be a complete dump if it wasn't for the cleaner and my dh. I loike it when its clean and tidy but would much rather play with ds than tidy up!!! If anyone broke in during the day the would prob ably think someone had been there already and it wasn't worth the effort!!! I do tidy his toys away in the evning though otherwise I think dh would leave!

alicet · 21/05/2007 16:52

Not sure about Seth. Can't decide. Certainly unusual which is a big plus - I think its really hard to be creative with boys names! Edith Mary is my Granny's name - I love Edie!

Better say good luck to those who have scans on Wed as well - good luck greedy and kittiwake! I'm away with work on Tues night until late Wed so will look forward to catching up with all tues and wed news then!

PolarMummy · 21/05/2007 16:56

AliceT funny you should say that, a number of years ago a friend of mine went away with her family (it was still in the days when you could tell the police you were away and they would have driven past your house) and on one of their drive bys the police noticed that the front door was open, so they contacted the family to let them know that they had been broken into and the Dad came home (they had only been at their caravan about 2hs drive away) He was met by the poice at the door and they warned him that the place had been left in some mess so it might be hard to see if anything was missing. When the Dad went in the house was exactly as they had left it the lock on the front door was a bit dodgy and he had been meaning to fix it for a while can you imagine having to fess up to the police how embarrassing!

Kittiwake · 21/05/2007 16:58

Congratulations Alicet great news.

Betsycoe I love the name Seth but have discounted it as doesn't go with our surname actually I love lots of names people either love or hate too e.g Clem which again is to short. I know it's asking for trouble but what do people think of Leonard perhaps shortened to Lenny does it make you think of Leonard Cohen or Lenny Henry hhmmmm not sure now.

KezzaG · 21/05/2007 17:05

Well done Alicet. I know what you mean about the sex. I had a little image of me and baby in a pink bedroom, and when we saw what we assume to be the boys bits, I had a nano second of disappointment. But now I love the idea of 2 boys and ds having a brother.

betsycoe and ejt, good luck for tomorrow.

j20baby · 21/05/2007 17:16

alicet, wow, another boy congrats!! glad everything was ok

buffy, was very impressed with you ringing the police, i think its great, if only the police would do that with all kids, this country would be so much better off.(or rather if only the parents would!)

sorry, can't mention everyone, it took me ages to read through and can't remember everything, plus i've got awful toothache, so i'm in a really ratty mood and can't concentrate, will catch up properly later or tommorrow.

buffythenappyslayer21 · 21/05/2007 17:27

hi everyone!

congrats alice!!hope you find a name you and your dh can both agree on!im lucky,i tell dh what names i like and he just agrees with them!think it would be different though if i said something zebadiah or something like that!(sorry to anyone who has a child or knows of one called that!)

thank you all for your support.i know i said it earlier!!

good luck for those with scans!im soooo excited about having mine, cant wait!!

ejt1764 · 21/05/2007 17:54

great news on your scan alicet!

HMP - I am finding that the more sneery dephead gets, the more ar$ey I'm getting. I'm now starting to do the 'work to rule' thing.....
Make sure you log all incidents - I'm just waiting for my union rep to come back to work (she's had a tumour removed from her ear - sounds horrendous), then I'm going to ask her where I go from here in putting in a complaint about dephead's behaviour. Luckily, I've logged all mine on here - by having a general rant or whinge.

Hi to everybody else [waves] ... have got my physio referral!

Scan tomorrow ...

ejt1764 · 21/05/2007 17:59

p.s. MrsFish - grab the offer of a cleaner with both hands!

When I went back to work after ds, I was working ft, and I was bugg£r£d if I was going to spend my weekend cleaning ... so we had an agency ... unfortunately, they were rubbish, so we sacked them! Then my mum moved down here (to South Wales), so she started doing our cleaning instead - we pay her the same as we were paying the agency, but she does a much better job! Helps her out as well ... keeps her in her 'running away money' (her phrase not mine)!

Anyway, this as a very long wasy around to saying that mum has said that she will continue cleaning when I'm on matenity leave - it'll give her a chance to have a regular cuddle as well!

HonorMatopoeia · 21/05/2007 18:03

Pleased your scan went well alicet . We've decided we'll probably find out the sex of this lo, simply because I have a dd and I'm such a terrible girly girl myself that I feel I'd have to really think through having a boy! Wouldn't be in the slightest bit disappointed if it is a boy though.
I know she can't makeme start mat. leave early but she can make my life hell, she's good at that My Mum has just said she had problems with fainting during her second pregnancy too. She had to leave work early, at about 18 weeks - which is spookily where I am now! Weird eh?
