Hi everyone - great to see everybody in a good mood and with good news from scans!

I have reassuring news too. I saw a nurse at the hospital today - she took a swab and sent my urine for testing to make really sure I don't have any kind of infection and that the thrush really is thrush. I have to go the GP Friday to get the results. I was getting a bit worried that the discharge may have been due to waters having broken. She said I would normally have other signs e.g. a temperature or some other sign of infection, if that had been the case. She can't exclude it 100% but said it is extremely unlikely with these symptoms. I can live with that, I think. Nothing in life is ever 100% certain, is it?...

She was nice and reassuring, and told me the menstrual pain is unlikely to be anything to worry about because I've had it throughout the pregnancy and has not changed much, so it is more likely to be the uterus stretching or other changes in my body. She said she would have been more worried if it had started all of a sudden.

I didn't get a scan, but she said I am feeling fetal movement and have no other worrying signs, so if I agreed she wouldn't ask for one. I felt so reassured that I agreed with her. Will have my 20-weeks one in 3 weeks anyway and I was keen to get out of the hospital after waiting for hours.....which I did....and I treated myself to a shopping trip to Mothercare and Topshop! The sun also came out while I was shopping - to complete the picture.

Happy now.

Thanks to all of you for thinking about me...

buffythenappyslayer21 · 16/05/2007 06:06

morning.

glad to hear everythings ok gemma.

nezi-we thought that was why they said we must egt the warranty,so they didnt have to replace any of the things we get.will go into comet when i get the girt cards and have a look what we can get.

tallis-thanks for the update!

well,im feeling totally crappy.had a bad dream (i was in a house with a chinese family.the father was shouting at me,and started grabbing me and said he was going to cut my arms and legs off, rape me,then cut me open and pull my baby out.i grabbed a butter knife and stabbed him,but it didnt go through his skin.he kept coming at me laughing and i was screaming.i tried to get out but couldnt.everyone else in the hosue (mum and 2 daughters)jsut sat there ignoring what was going on.i kept jabbing this man with my butter knife and in the end he said he was going upstairs to get a bigger knife (he kept stabbing my arms witha pairing knife)when he went upstairs he droppped down dead!i sat tehre crying because i had killed him,and couldnt get out!dh came in and i told him,and he went mad at me!i rang the police and they came for me,dh jsut sat tehre ignoring me!the police came and took me away, but when i got to the police station they said i hadnt killed him,hed had a heart attack.but they wouldnt let me go.i woke up crying!)god knows what it all meant, but it was horrible!

ds2 (7) fell off his bike last night and the handle bars went into his chest.dh took him to the hospital in bangor, and they said hes bruised his ribs.hes got a massive round bruise and it has the shape of the end of teh handle.poor little mite was so brave, and didnt get back until midnight,so went staright to bed and was flat out.when i got up at 4.45am i had to check he was ok (hes usually noisy in his sleep!chats away!!) but hed been ok.ds1 woke up and asked what i was doing (had my hand under ds2's nose toc heck he was breathing!!!)i was so worried because i couldnt hear (or see him!) very well!!hes ok thank god.

the doctor at the hospital said he couldve damaged his spleen,so i was worried sick during the night.im sure if they ahd thought he was in any damger they wouldve kept him in.

does anyone know anything about moles?ive got a mole on my leg that appeared a couple of months ago,and its started getting itchy.its only small (about teh size of an apple pip).its just really itchy.cant egt appointment at gp's,everytime i ring theyre full and say to ring in the morning.but its the same when you ring again.

oh well, sorry this is so long!!!

alicet · 16/05/2007 08:51

Hi buffy,

Moles can change in pregnancy due to all the hormones so it may be nothing to worry about. Having said that I would get it checked out if I was you since itchiness is something that potentially is a worrying change. Just get the next available docs appt - if its in a day or a week it won't matter. I had a mole that got bigger during my last pregnancy and they sent me to the hospital to get it checked as a precaution. Thankfully all was fine.

Regarding your ds I can reassure you that most docs would keep him in hospital for observation if they thought it possible he could have damaged his spleen. I am a doc and we keep people in at the drop of a hat for this. They can't have been too worried or they would have kept him in even if only to cover themselves! However if there is anything you're not happy about with him today just take him back - they would always be happy to have another look at him.

Good luck for scan today kezza!

Chat later....

alicet · 16/05/2007 08:53

gemma - just to reassure you that when I had similar pains to you I didn't get a scan either. The reasoning was that if it was a threatened miscarriage then they wouldn't see anything on the scan to say it was or not. And I didn't have any symptoms of any problem that would show up on the scan. SO I was happy with that explanation too!

buffythenappyslayer21 · 16/05/2007 09:16

hi alice-ds is fine, hes got up,eaten breakfast and is sat with dd watching tv.i know they wouldve kept him in if they ahd been worried about him,but it doesnt stop me worrying!!will be watching him like a hawk today!!

as for my mole, our surgery wont give appointments out for any other day other than the day you ring.the receptionists are witches!!you cant get passed them.dd was really poorly one time, and as she has cf and asthma,i wanted her seen.couldnt get appointment even though i explained what was wrong.ended up ringing her cf nurse who rang the surgery and demanded an appointment.amazingly they found they could fit her in.

will give them a ring again and see if can get in.

J20BABY · 16/05/2007 09:29

buffy ~ same with our docs, they think they're the bloody doctors, and what really annoys me is when they ask you what is wrong! errr mind your own bloody business!

anyway, hope your ds and mole is ok, but make sure you get it checked.

i'm seeing the specialist about my low iron today, hope i don't have to have a big injection

hope everyone is ok.

Kezza ~ good luck today

Lovely news J20 and Mrsfish... one of each, that's great .

Hi to the newies!

Good to see everyone feeling a bit jollier on this thread.

Greedy- you have to be having a girl!!!

greedygreedyguzzler · 16/05/2007 09:39

alicet - did you say you are a doctor? what type? do you realise how many questions you will get from us all now?!

Tallis · 16/05/2007 09:49

Hi J2O -really good luck with your appt today. If you do end up having to have injections, I wonder if you might ask your GP/consultant to prescribe you some Emla local anaesthetic cream. This stuff is genius. Comes in tiny tube. You squeeze out quite a biggish blob (well, size of two-three raisins IYSWIM) on the place you're going to have the injection, cover it with this special water-proof see-thru dressing that comes with the cream and leave it ideally for about an hour. it makes the area completely numb. You can't feel the needle at all, or the stuff going in. I had friends who used it when they had to do horror daily IVF injections and it made the whole pin-cushion process far more bearable. Numbness goes about an hour later. One tube probably has enough cream for at least four or five injections. You only have to plan ahead in remembering to put it on!

Funnily enough the doctor who told me about it first said you only had to leave the cream on for five mins. I saw the nurse rolling her eyes behind him. And on the way out, she said, "Tuh, five minutes. Leave it 45 mins to an hour and then it really works!"

it's one of those things that the Drs tell you about in the US, and in Italy (where you can buy it over the counter without prescription) but for some reason in the UK we are expected to grin and bear needles. And that's really awful if you're needle-phobic.

I can't think Emla can be harmful in pregnancy because IVF-ers have to carry on injecting hormones in their early stages of pregnancy, i think for first 12 weeks in some cases.

PolarMummy · 16/05/2007 10:17

Buffy, the whole appointment business with GP's is a real nightmare at times, its not really their fault though its all to do with the Government waiting times for appointments. If they only give out appointments for a day at a time then on paper they can say they are meeting their targets and everyone is seen the same day they make the appointment. Where as if they make an appointment for you in a few days time or a weeks time then they aren't meeting their targets!!! Its madness we would all prefer to be able to make an appointment a couple of days in advance rather than have to ring up every morning! Sorry if this seems like a rant just explaining.

buffythenappyslayer21 · 16/05/2007 10:25

polar-no its not a rant, totally understand.but its just so bloody annoying that you cant get in!my mum was trying get through for 2 and half hours on phone to amke appointment.when she did get through the stroppy receptionist said "all teh appointments have gone now,if your ill you shouldve rang at 9!"my mam burst into tears and said she had been trying since then, receptionist said "best try again tomorrow then" and hung up!

dh goes and waits outside the surgery for tehm to open and when you get in they sit tehre answering teh phones giving teh appointments out!so you cant get one either way!

have tried this morning but its just engaged.will keep trying but there wont be any appointments left now,can guarantee it!!

alicet · 16/05/2007 11:01

buffy ds sounds fine. he wouldn't want to eat ifthere was anything seriously wrong - having said that sure I would be worried too - thats just what being a mum is all about!!

The system at your gp's sounds rubbish. At ours you can make appointments up to a month in advance. You need to be able to plan a bit particularly for when its not urgent but you need to see someone - urgent is what a&e is for!

Greedy yes I am a doc - a surgeon in fact, hence knowing about tummy injuries like buffy's ds. So no more help than any of the rest of you re baby stuff!!! But happy to answer any questions that I can!

Hope appointment goes well J2O and they sort your iron levels out one way or another (preferably without big needles!)

Good luck kezza for scan!

Afternoon all ... have come home early to 'rest' - I should be writin reports, but it's far more important at the moment to keep up with this thread - it's soooooo busy!

Gemma - glad you had reassuring news - they didn't scan me - either when I had the bleed, or when I was having the contractions ... they just listened in for the heartbeat, and were happy with that. I work on the premise that if they're happy, then so am I ... they urge you not to have too many scans at this stage, as there's been some suggestion of problems caused (perhaps) by having scans between 16 & 20 weeks.

buffy - what a horrible dream ... mind you, if ds had had a nasty accident, then what a horrible day before it! I'm really glad he's ok.

As for the GPs appointments, I'd complain vociferously about the system at your GPs - we have the same system (ring up from 8am for appointments that day) - but there are also a certain number of appointments that you can book in advance online - and if there's an emergency, they are supposed to give you an emergency slot.

tallis - the cream they use sounds great!

alice - oooooo a surgeon - what kind?

Well, not much to add from me ... except that I've just been in touch with the midwives about my lack of physio appointment. A colleague of mine at work is about 17 weeks pregnant, her referral was put through 2 weeks ago, and she was seen on Monday. Mine was put through on 16th April (!), and I've heard nothing. The midwife I spoke to gave me the direct number for the obstetric physio, and told me to leave a voice mail on her phone - as that was the way I was most likely to get some sense! A bit actually ... I'm in agony now with my pelvis - think I'm developing sciatica to go with the spd and coccyx pain - literally can't move without severe pain! I'm walking like someone about to give birth (you know, the oh-so-elegant waddle!)

Baby is tapdancing this afternoon - keeps making me jump.

Happy Wednesday to everybody I haven't mentioned ....

karlou · 16/05/2007 16:05

Thanks for all the kind welcomes and congrats to those who have had their scans.

I'm still feeling lethargic, the urine sample came back negative for growth (I knew it would) so hopefully I can get to see my own GP tomorrow. I'm beginning to think it's anaemia especially because I don't eat meat.

Nezi - I'm rehesus negative too and had the anti D injection with both my previous pregnancies. I think it's because the baby may be rhesus positive and if you experience any bleeding it could cause problems in subsequent pregnancies. Not sure why you had an early injection last time - did you have an early bleed?

Tallis · 16/05/2007 16:30

There really is a flurry of activity round these parts. Bicycle accidents (glad all OK there) and now poor ejt with spd. How awful to be in such pain and unable to get a physio appt. honestly, they talk about a postcode 'lottery' but all most people seem to get is booby prizes.

J20 - gld to hear you didn't have to face an injection. Apparently loads of orange juice is the way to go with that liquidy iron stuff as it helps drown the taste. And yes - i don't see at all why you would be able to use Emla for having bloods taken. I always offer them the inside of my left elbow and assuming they can find a vein there they needn't even know that you've frozen the spot earlier with magic cream...

Btw I'm Rhesus neg too, but as this is my first pregnancy they haven't done anything about it yet.

KezzaG · 16/05/2007 16:36

Hi all,

well the scan was great and Baby Colin was spot on for dates. We asked not to be told the sex, but we are both pretty sure from what we say that it is a boy! At one point it was so obvious and dh said "guess we know what sex it is then" and the sonographer just laughed and quickly moved on so I reckon its boys 2 girls 1 for now.

So, names so far are Leo James or Freddie James. Ds will be so disappointed it isnt really going to be Colin

I havent read through properly as this is a flying visit before I go and collect ds, but hope everyone is ok.

Catch up with you all soon.

Oooh Im going to have 2 boys, Im sooooo excited

J20BABY · 16/05/2007 17:03

Congratulations, Kezza! Another happy result!

Just quickly before I disappear for the day, I am feeling absolutely whacked out despite having had loads of sleep over the weekend. Does anyone, and J2O in particular, know whether exhaustion is a sign of anaemia? I know you're meant to feel lethargic, but this goes beyond that...

J20BABY · 16/05/2007 17:20

mump~err yes, although i seem to have got better if i actually get out of the house. but sometimes, i can hardly move, i only do because i have no choice, definately get checked for being anemic x
