Hello all. I'm afraid I'm only dipping in and out as work is absolutely bonkers at the moment. I'll try to keep up as much as I can.

Had early scan yesterday and saw a heartbeat. Dates at 8+5, which was around what I thought. Estimated due date is 14th August. The date is a tricky one. One of my best friends had a stillbirth three years ago at 25 weeks, and her baby's due date was 12th August. I'm not going to say anything for a few weeks yet, but plan on sending her a text then so that she is not blindsided on the phone or face to face. I know she will be happy for me, but I know it will be very painful too. Is a text the right thing? I feel really awful about it.

Hortonlovesahoo · 09/01/2018 13:41

@Expecto - I see your reasoning and it does make sense. I think you're right with the timing of the scans. It just seemed a little off as with my first DD - they were 2 weeks apart as they said that any shorter durations they wouldn't be good enough to show the differences that they were looking for.

Expecto · 09/01/2018 13:49

@badb depends on closeness of friendship and physical proximity. My friend and I have known each other forever, I moved 100 miles away after marriage but we communicate everyday on telephone so she just made a group announcement. You do feel it abit but it’s your own grief...you can’t take away their excitement. Plus the likelihood of you actually having your baby on the DD is one in a million!? Another friend just outright refused to tell me and then wondered why I hadn’t congratulated her when I found out months later from someone else 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Horton duh I never even thought of that! Mention it to mw?

Expecto · 09/01/2018 13:52

@badb perhaps don’t mention the exact due date. I know a few people that “don’t believe in due dates” so just mention the month...end of July/early August?

badb · 09/01/2018 13:59

@Expecto thank you for the reply. I'm very sorry for your loss. We are very close friends, although we don't talk as often as we should. I will definitely tell her before making a group announcement. Perhaps you are right and I should avoid mentioning the specific date. I am about 90% sure that I will have a planned section and that will likely be a week or so earlier than the official due date in any case.

BertieBotts · 09/01/2018 14:02

Is it your first badb? I would just say late August. First babies are often late anyway.

Stephiewoo · 09/01/2018 14:20

I've missed so many posts, really sorry for that girls.

Lack of sleep and horrific dreams have created buckets of tears and fears today.

Just wanted to say, you guys are all so strong, I feel very blessed for our sharing of the toughest most amazing times in our lives right now.

Thinking of you all xx

badb · 09/01/2018 14:20

@Bertie, no it's my second. I may just say early August since a planned section will put it there anyway.

Speaking of my first, she gave us three glorious nights of sleeping through at the weekend. One day back at the creche and she was up half the night again. I think she is sleeping too long in the day there. I have told them to keep it to around an hour, but can you really trust them? I know I never want to wake her from sleep, she's a cranky mare if she doesn't wake naturally. She had no naps, or only very short ones, over the weekend. But she has always been a catastrophically bad sleeper. I really hope she improves. I was almost in tears last night as I sat in her room for 45 minutes at 1, for 30 minutes at 2.30, and 30 minutes at 4 trying to get her back off to sleep. How on earth will ee cope with a newborn as well?

SpriteGirl · 09/01/2018 14:21

Well I've just called and changed my scan date. Lady on the phone was very nice and accommodating and although she said she couldn't promise anything she asked me to go through all dates that work for me. All good until she says "So you're just having dating, not screening?"

????!!! WWWWWHHHHHAAAATTTTT. Honestly first they lose my blood sample and now this.

Anyway it's all sorted (I'll be calling again though before the scan to check - gota do it all yourself it seems). Interestingly she told me I had to be 12 weeks for screening so the first date they sent me would have been no good anyway (I would've been 11+6).

Horton how come you're having two scans? Sorry if I've missed something

SpriteGirl · 09/01/2018 14:27

@Stephiewoo I had an awful dream at the weekend and woke up and burst into tears. I'm crying at everything at the moment. last night I was stressing about my scan dates and crying "I just want to see my baby now, I've waited long enough" (makes me well up just thinking about it now).

Hormones I guess. I'm waiting for the happy ones to kick on Smile

Gem173 · 09/01/2018 14:45

I’m taking pregnacare, but haven’t got any morning sickness, touchwood.
@Gizzymum ah thanks for that, did seem a bit of a dodgy study to bring up now, people just try to justify things that aren’t relevant these days as previous research has shown!
Hope everyone’s okay today, @Horton must be nice to have scan dates even if they aren’t accurate. I’d love to have mine but got a long wait yet!
Just ate two greggs sausage rolls... I’m so bloated... @Pollyp87 hopefully I don’t look due! Haha some people just don’t know when to not ask questions!

Hortonlovesahoo · 09/01/2018 14:48

@Spritegirl - Normally they do them as:

  • 10 weeks: Dating scan
  • 12 weeks: Check for any abnormalities
This could also be because I'm high risk.
SpriteGirl · 09/01/2018 15:37

Oh I see, thanks. All the info I've had from various sources has said two scans in total on the NHS for pregnancy unless of course there's a reason to have more (I may have more due to low BMI)

Expecto · 09/01/2018 16:23

I’ve just come across the most annoying thing on the internet....some women don’t even have any contractions or pain and suddenly see a baby’s head appear between their legs?! Anyone else heard of this? I want in!!!!

Kiki275 · 09/01/2018 17:33

@Expecto I take boots pregnancy plus but have pregnacare lined up for after. I'm horrendous at remembering to take it (no morning sickness either). Anyone know why they are so expensive though? They're pretty generic multivitamins minus the Vitamin A but are 10x the cost.

@badb I'd personally tell them face to face. My friend announced her 2nd pregnancy whilst my other friend was undergoing several rounds of IVF face to face. It's not gonna be easy, but it'll be more appreciated than opening a text and BAM!

@Expecto I've heard of rapid deliveries, but not quite that. An acquaintance did describe birth (her words) as "having a bloody good sh*t :)

I've had my 2nd appointment with the MW today, when they took bloods. She gave me my scan date letter (7th Feb) and my green notes to keep. Incidently, does everyone know not to take antihistamines? I googled them yesterday to check and was given the definitive no-no today by the MW :(

SpriteGirl · 09/01/2018 17:52

@Expecto lol I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not. Some warning might be good!

I’m taking pregnacare. It’s more expensive because it’s a brand name and ‘supposedly’ better. My doctor was very clear with me (both pre and post conception) that I need to be taking vitamin D as well as folic acid as the basics. She said it’s the newest research and is sure if future years will be routine advise as folic acid is now.

YouCantBeSirius · 09/01/2018 18:00

I got my maternity notes yesterday, they are tiny compared to what I had when I was pregnant with my DD. Also can now access my own notes through an app which is handy.

Expecto · 09/01/2018 18:18

@kiki275 😂😂😂 you’re acquaintance sounds hilarious. I kinda get what she means....you push hard and suddenly all the pain goes and there’s a reward at the end hence the “good” part as a normal poo would have no reward at the end of it...just relief! I’ll never forget that though haha

I’m on vit d and folic acid as I remember doing that last time. My sister seems to swear by pregnacare (I agree it’s expensive because it’s a branded product) but then I worry I might OD on them if I’m taking iron/vit d/folic too?

SpriteGirl · 09/01/2018 18:27

Yeah don’t really think you need pregnacare if you’re taking those things separately too.

TinoTheArtisticMouse · 09/01/2018 18:50

Kiki that isn't correct. lots of antihistimes are fine in pregnancy (and actually prescribed for pregnancy related reasons). You're dr will be able to advise on specifics.

Kiki275 · 09/01/2018 18:52

I'm not even sure it's a brand thing. In tesco (excluding multibuy) Pregnacare x30 is £4.25, own brand x30 is £3.30, whereas folic acid x90 is only £1 and multivits x90 are £3.50. They're all just robbing bar stewards taking advantage of expectant mothers wanting to maximise chances for their little beans. Rant over!!x

Kiki275 · 09/01/2018 18:57

@Tino I hope so if it continues. MW said nothing until 12 weeks and a doctor will likely only prescribe Piriton. I used to pop Cetirizine like smarties when I had my implant in.x

CaffeineDragon · 09/01/2018 19:02

I'm so sorry @Expecto. You are so strong. We're here for you. xx

BertieBotts · 09/01/2018 19:07

I would take the three you have already OR pregnacare, not both. I think pregnacare has that stuff in it.

CumbrianExile · 09/01/2018 19:16

Great news on the scan Bertie.

I'm taking Superdrug own pregnancy multivitamin. It was much cheaper than pregnacare!

Booking in appointment for me tomorrow! Looking forward to getting the ball rolling, think it will all start to feel real after tomorrow.
