Welcome all !!!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
stretchmarks · 17/05/2007 12:47

DS1 was a bit overwhelmed at the actual scan but put the DVD on as soon as we got home so he could see the baby again. Babybond had a little room set up on their stand at the show so we got it done there.

Annie75 · 17/05/2007 12:52

Awesome pics, Stretch Am excited now, am better able to picture how mine is looking!

Re pregnancy brain, I can't seem to remember anything these days - whether I fed the dog, locked the car or left the oven on. Am hoping it's a transitory stage .

jem1969 · 17/05/2007 12:55

fab pictures stretchmark

I'm feeling a bit guilty looking at all this nappy talk. As a first timer am feeling totally overwhelmed with all the things I need to buy and things to organise that I can't face thinking about nappies as well. Am I awful to use disposables these days? I suppose I could always use them for a while and switch to 'proper' nappies when everything's a bit more settled?

kiteflying · 17/05/2007 13:03

There are some ECO disposables if you want to compromise without chemicals. I have not really looked into them but I know there are some bleach free ones on the market.

Don't worry too much - we still have three months!

Uki · 17/05/2007 13:20

Can I ad my preggy porrige brain story, I had my friend in huge giggles at this.

I decided to do some streaks in my hair at home, as I wanted to save money, and thought the home dye might be a little less toxic.

Anyway got out the foil and paintbrush and neatly did about 8 chunky streaks, wrapping them all up, etc, arms killing me by the end, anyway about 45 mins later hair exactly the same. I'd mixed the conditioner instead of the developer!!!!
What a waste of time and money

Not as bad as dh's though i have just realised after sending them that the invites he made for ds's 2nd birthday have the date 2005 printed on them. and he was calling me silly over the hair!!!

MrsBadger · 17/05/2007 13:34

jem, it can actually be quite sensible to start with disposables as lots of the sized things (I think especially the waterproof wraps) have a 'medium' size from 10lb-20lb, so if you hang fire till they're 10lb you'd end up buying less, as well as saving on laundry in the first mad months.

Mrsshuvel · 17/05/2007 14:36

Phew... made it. Got back from America last week where it was in the 90s to land in the rubbish weather here and catch a horrible cold that wiped me out for days. Then have had tons of catching up to do at work and trying to catch up with all the posts on MN. I got here in the end though!

Had a fab time in US. Bought loads of baby clothes. Had a real result most of the things were in half prices sales then with the exchange rate they were half price again. So Baby Gap, Osh Kosh, Gymboree etc all for peanuts. Only problem was i bought so much, including fab changing bag, carrier, maternity shorts and 4 different maternity dresses for upcoming weddings that i couldn't fit everything in my case. Luckily for me my brother (family live there) decided to come back with me to stay for a few weeks had room in his case. Had a little fashion show for DP when got home, just can't wait til baby actually wearing them.

Sorry for those having a rubbish time at work. I can't believe that it's allowed to still go on.

Glad you've all been talking about nappies. I've been pondering this for a few weeks now since an Aunt decided she was going to buy me some cloth ones nearer the time. My mum thinks i'm mad to even consider them as she didn't have a choice and had to use them. I think i'll use disposables first then give the cloth ones a try as you suggest Mrs Badger.

We keep changing his name, he was Tommy for a few weeks, then James and for the last 2 weeks he has been Albie but i'm sure this will change again as we near the final date.

kiteflying · 17/05/2007 15:26

MrsShuvel - very envious of your purchases. I also caught a cold as soon as I landed back here in Blighty from holiday - must be some kind of curse visited on those of us who escape. Hope Hersetta and TT are not similarly affected when they get back!!
It is so funny that you keep switching names for your LO. Do you think you will just come up with a brand new one when he appears at his birth?

I can see MrsBadger is going to shake her head in despair at the naivety of the first timer but I have been giving some thought to trying to have our little one nappy free as soon as possible. I thought this would be impossible unless you were entirely housebound but the more I read, the more it seems like less work rather than more. 75 % of mothers across the globe can't be that wrong can they? Don't know whether my other half will cope, but I am going to raise it with him. As the only one of the two of us that has actually looked after babies in the past, I suspect his view will prevail.

MrsBadger · 17/05/2007 16:15

no headshaking here, kitey, just a huge amount of respect if you manage it!

Babylovesmuffins · 17/05/2007 17:07

Hello nappyholics! Been out of the office most of today which was fab but I'm probably logging on as most of you are going home... Managed to catch up on all the posts though!

GillL - think Cameron is a fab name - it's one of my favourites but we "can't" use it as MIL's step-grandson is Cameron, and 2 of our neighbours have Camerons.... (can you tell we live in Scotland?!!!)

Banana - hope GTT results come back ok. I am TOTALLY suffering from sieve-head syndrome at the moment.... found the tea-bags in the mug cupboard yesterday and tried to blame DH for it but he just laughed at me...especially when he caught me trying to put a spoon in the fridge (I thought it was the dishwasher)

Stretchy - the pics are wonderful! Really clear - you must be pleased. btw, how is your cat treating you at the moment??!! Ours is being really odd with me... I think he knows... Just hoping he doesn't go pyscho with the new baby as he's a bit wild at times Trying not to think about this prospect too much as I don't want to have to think about re-homing him...

Augustbride · 17/05/2007 19:23

Adding to the preg brain stories - a few weeks ago I boiled the kettle to make my morining cuppa, got the milk out of the fridge for tea / cereal and proceeded to pour the hot water over my cereal instead of into the cup. Doh!

As for the nappy debate , I think we will be doing the disposable to start off with and then hopeully changing to reusables (haven't decided which yet) when he gets to a size that will last a while.

Has anyone done a hospital tour yet? Have a bit of a bump but don't know if I will feel a fraud looking round with quite a few weeks to go.

Annie75 · 18/05/2007 10:21

Hello all. Anyone else getting morning sickness? I thought I'd got away lightly - only had a couple of weeks of it at the early stages, but recently have been sick about twice a week. I thought it was fruit juice (the acid) but find myself again with my head down the toilet at work this morning, and I only had tea and toast for brekkie

Re nappies - I'd recommend the Nappy Lady as a good starting point. Mrs B has a link to her somewhere here. They got back really quickly with a detailed list of suggestions to suit my lifestyle (eg I don't have a tumble dryer, so they recommended some quick drying ones).

bananabump · 18/05/2007 12:27

Aaw Annie, that's no good! I would have thought tea and toast would be good for acid/nausea. Maybe people have some good tips on here about keeping nausea at bay?

I did feel nauseous every morning for a month or so but I was getting a new lift into work at the time who drove too fast so I assumed my nausea was car sickness, and blocked it out!

kiteflying · 18/05/2007 12:38

Poor Annie. Yes, I still have it on occasion - acidic foods, too much food, spicy food, the same things that trigger my heartburn, plus being too tired or too exercised - but the constant nausea has gone. Mind you I had it up until three weeks ago (five and a half months pregnant) so it can last longer than the first trimester.

Try the yoghourt remedy someone suggested for heartburn in case it is part of reflux rather than pregnancy sickness per se, perhaps?

Mrsshuvel · 18/05/2007 13:16

I think (touch wood) that the MS has finally stopped (only to be replaced by heart burn but i found ginger helped. Started off with ginger beer but don't like drinking fizzy drinks so found a cordial at the health shop which worked too.

Annie75 · 18/05/2007 14:06

Thanks for the suggestions. It comes over me so suddenly that I don't even feel nauseous beforehand, which is a bit alarming at work! I was feeling especially tired yesterday, so will keep an eye on possible triggers. Poor you, Kite - I can't imagine having had MS up until a few weeks ago - that would've been awful.

Don't know whether I'm entering the moaning trimester, but am also feeling a bit freaked by the prospect of 12 more weeks of growth. I already feel as though it's shovelling my lungs up with its hands whenever I sit down at my computer On the plus side, I was thinking of Stretchmark's 4D pics with its cute proper little face and then get v excited that we're all going to see our babies in a shortish time

Hey, any of you planning a water birth? Not sure what sort to get and whether to wait until my next scan (to monitor growth) to make sure that all's ok for a homebirth. There seem to be loads of different types.

Mrsshuvel · 18/05/2007 14:18

I was thinking of asking for a water birth in my birth plan (that's as far as i have got with birth plans though). They have two at St Thomas' so if one's available i'm gonna try it. I can always get out if i don't like it. I imagine it to be a bit less stressful than being on the bed although i'm probably kidding myself.

bananabump · 18/05/2007 14:52

I would have loved a waterbirth but it isn't going to happen, no facilities at hospital and I doubt I'll be allowed a homebirth, so I'm just going to make the best of it and be in and out of the bath/shower as much as they'll let me.

So jealous of stretchy's pics! I really wanted a 4d scan but the cheapest bundle round here is £85 and I know the money should really go on bills. It's crap because I know that by 32 weeks we'll have more money, and by then they say there won't be much point in scanning as he'll have less room to move! tut!

Mrsshuvel · 18/05/2007 15:02

I know it's naughty but is there no way one of the bills could wait? I know how you feel though. I've been juggling the expenses and making spreadsheets all morning instead of working to see where we can save and spend elsewhere.

Mrsshuvel · 18/05/2007 15:04

That sounds really bad, i don't mean that you should just ignore bills just meant that by juggling certain costs around i always manage to find some money for things. Not sure how long i'll be able to do that when baby arrives though.

bananabump · 18/05/2007 15:16

I know what you mean but even if I did scrape £85 together I know dp will say we should spend it on bills to get us out of the poo. Ah well, maybe next time.

Annie75 · 18/05/2007 15:40

Hmm, ways of bringing in extra dosh... I've started doing the lottery again, and though I know it's a fool's game my fingers are crossed.

I keep meaning to go through the house and put a load of stuff I don't want on eBay (keep trying to pursuade my DH to let me put his childhood stamp album on it!). I've got friends that supplement their income through it, though they've found a niche they know a lot about and tend to buy and sell where they know their market. At least you can eBay from home, too.

I've just had a quick look for the first time at the employ a MN and jobs bit. Wonder if anyone makes money from them?

Mrsshuvel · 18/05/2007 16:01

We keep meaning to go through the cupboard under the stairs we have so many motorbike parts, jackets, trousers etc that DP asures me we can sell on ebay. We have two motorbikes to go on too. We need to do this because the bikes are gonna pay for the Bugaboo and the cupboard under the stairs has to house the thing.

Haven't actually looked at the employ a mumnetter bit. just going to have a nose now.

katybird · 18/05/2007 16:27

Hi everyone, hope you've all had a chance to get outside and enjoy the sunshine for a bit. Treated myself to a Magnum at lunch, I think they're addictive.

As usual it's taken me an age to catch up with all the posts so apologies if I write another epic!

Baby names - we've pretty much settled on Logan for LO, and I want William for a middle name, after my grandad. DP would like his grandad's name as a third middle name but Logan William Wallace is a bit extreme for a non-Scottish baby!

We went for a tour of the local birth centre on Wednesday and loved it, immediately felt at home. It's just lovely, very calm and they have three water pools so its very rare that anyone won't be able to get one. I'm not sure about a water birth but I'd definitely like to use the pool for pain relief. They deal with a lot fewer births than the labour ward too, thre a day is busy, so there'll be less pressure to get on with it. We're booking in there in a few weeks so fingers crossed the rest of the pregnancy is normal.

Still trying to get my head round the whole nappies thing, there are so many on the market! The Nappy Lady was really useful, and I'm going to order a few trial packs. Thanks for all the links and tips everyone.

Stretchy - your 4D pics are beautiful, v !

stretchmarks · 18/05/2007 17:06

HI Everyone just a quick catch up at the end of what feels like a very long day !!!!

Babylovesmuffins - our cat is fine with me at the moment she was around when we had DS1 so has survived one child, although the other cat we had at the time didn't he left home never found him. He was the baby of the family before hand we don't know what could have happened to him as he never went far he was long haired with very short legs and had trouble getting over the garden fence.

Glad to see other people are looking at doing the ebay thing I need motivating to do this. I've been meaning to do it for ages we have stuff everywhere in this house that we need to get rid of and evertime DH threatens to chuck it all in a skip I keep shouting that I'll sell it on Ebay or freecycle it but I really must actually do it.

Sorry to hear about those of you who have still been suffering from nausea. Touch wood I've only had a few episodes since about 16/17 weeks it seems to have been replaced by bloody restless leg syndrome which I've found gets worse if I've been driving alot with work / tired / stressed or too much coffee.
