I always imagine how it would sound as they get their PhD / become an MP / as a judge / chairman of the board etc.
Makes you realise how sickly some of the really cutesy current girls' names are - great on a toddler, less good when they're 40 and want to be taken seriously...

GillL · 16/05/2007 16:52

I've got 2 drawers full of baby clothes for newborn and 0-3 (loads of white/neutral stuff I can use from when dd was a baby) so I won't have to buy any clothes for a while. I have bought some clothes but I think the only things left to buy are a monitor and new cot. I'm hoping this one will be like dd (i.e. small for a long time) and stay in the moses basket for 3 or 4 months. That way we can wait for the sales to buy the new cot.

We've only got one name on our shortlist - Cameron. It's the only boys name we have ever agreed on. I've been through a book with about 20,000 boys names and dh disagreed with every one I liked except Cameron. He said he's been thinking but keeps saying there's plenty of time. I keep reminding him that there isn't.

jem1969 · 16/05/2007 16:57

Afternoon all- feeling really big today and counting down to 5 o'clock when I will out smartish
Shopping- haven't bought a thing yet! Away the next couple of weekends and then will start. Mum keeps saying she's seen grobags cheap in TK Maxx so have said will go shopping with her- I think she is keener than me. Slight logistical problem in that she is Devon and I'm in London..
Names- sort of shortlist- v traditional. William, Oliver, Charlotte, Hannah. DH keeps coming up with ridiculous welsh names as he is welsh and is reading some historical novel which is full of unpronouncable names. Some of the girls ones are quite pretty but noone would be able to spell them. I'll get my way in the end! (Said the only one I liked was Blodwen- that shut him up- apologies to anyone called Blodwen!)
MW appointment yesterday- all fine.
Have to go to Geneva for big family get together this weekend- could do without it as only just got back from holiday. Last family gathering (DH's) decended into a drunken discussion about my pregancy, labour, whether it was a boy or girl, when everyone would come and visit etc etc. I just sat there (sober)as they discussed it all at length. DH has 2 sisters who had kids ages and ages ago so they are all a bit overexcited. They're all very nice and will spoil us rotten but it all gets a bit much sometimes.
anyway- almost 5...

loler · 16/05/2007 16:58

Oh Cameron is lovely, hadn't thought of that one - sounds daft with my surname though!

I've got a bit of a thing that everyone in the family has to have a different initial - past on by my mum! Cuts 4 letters out of the alphabet!

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 16/05/2007 17:01

Hi everyone hope we are all well!

Lolar - the bamboo ones you have, are they they ones by Tots bot, the bright colour ones?? i want to be a nappyholic !!!!!

My dh is coming back tomorrow with 2 black sack full of our ds clothes that we lent a friend for their baby so really looking forward to sorting them all out, seems to be getting close now!!

i am pleased to say that we have 99.9% decided on the name Tate for our little boy! and if the scan is wrong it will be Grace

Ludiloops · 16/05/2007 17:07

I keep getting theres plenty of time comment too! I'm just hoping I'll hear something one day and I'll know that'll be it...I'm being too optimistic!
I have just had whole top floor of my office discussing my babies names, clearly everyone is as busy as me today! Some of the suggestions were awful, trying to sound postive about them was very hard!
DH and I cannot agree but these are a few:

Girls; Evie, Olivia, Freya, Megan

Boys; Thomas, Oliver, Max, Freddie.

Bananabump - Really like Elliot, will def suggest that to DH tonight!

Loler - Good luck with house move! Hope it is as stress free as possible!

jem1969 · 16/05/2007 17:13

Ludiloops- all nice names
Megan- that's a Welsh one I hadn't thought of!I like Olivia too but it's the most popular name isn't it? A girl at work's daughter is called that and there are 3 others in her nursery class.
All the other boys names I like have already been taken by Dh's nephews.

kiteflying · 16/05/2007 17:20

This all sounds like good fun! I especially like MrsB's having restored her muslins to white! Any tips in this department would be received most avidly by myself. Having sworn off phosphates for nearly two years now in the name of having a baby and then having a safe pregnancy, I have struggled to get the results from borax and bicarb of soda that I used to from Vanish.

Some of your name stories sounds so bizarre. I would be tempted to think "Tia Maria" as a name was an urban myth if I had not heard it here! But I do like bananabump's shortlist - both yours and hubby's names are great.

We had a shortlist for each of our imaginary little boy and our imaginary little girl, but somehow over time this has reduced to one contender for each in the mind of my boyfriend. I remind him that bubs might not look like a X or a Y on appearance and we need to be flexible but it is no use.
I have always used the "playground, bedroom, boardroom" test for girls' names. Lots of lovely little girl names at the moment...Kitty, Millie etc, just don't seem to travel into adulthood well do they?

GillL - Cameron is a good name, but maybe you should keep your own shortlist and try to get DH to agree on the day if Cameron doesn't suit?

I am more and more tempted to buy outfits for bubs now I can feel her or him swimming about and kicking me all the time. It is lovely having this little morse code communication going on. I am so in love with this baby. Perhaps I will buy some more bamboo nappies (so soft and gorgeous...)

MrsBadger · 16/05/2007 17:26

afraid it was just a good squirt of Domestos in a sink full of water
(100% phosphate free though )

Like the 'playroom, bedroom, boardroom' test - you see derivatives like Kitty and Millie might fail but full versions like Katharine and Amelia pass with flying colours...

On a different note, I think it was Enid who coined the term 'HatShit names' - Hard To Shout In Tesco...

kiteflying · 16/05/2007 17:28

By the way, I took too long posting and missed loads of cross posts - so Ludiloops I like your list too. Am glad that Tate has been settled on pinkranger - excellent modern name. All ours are much more traditional.
Hope everyone has a great evening. I am leaving on time at 5.30. Let's chat about bamboo tomorrow...

stretchmarks · 16/05/2007 17:39

Hi everyone,

Been busy with work the last few days so just trying to catch up. Sorry to hear about the stress some of you are having with work. I am glad to say that I have very good employers this time round who are excellent with benefits etc but we are so short staffed at the moment I have no idea how they will cover my role when I am off but I am trying not to stress over it. It seemed to work itself out last time.

We went to the babyshow at the weekend and had a 4D scan which was good even though junior slept through the entire thing !!!! Had to keep telling DS1 that we were just going to see his brother as he kept saying the baby is coming out today !!!!!! I tried to upload the pictures to my profile but my laptop keeps crashing I will try again tomorrow.

We also bought some real nappies - ended up with the Bambino Mio ones we'll see how we get on our other faves were the Onelife ones.

Also bought my boys thier first matching t-shirts - didn't think I'd ever do that but couldn't resist.

We're still not decided on names - or should that be not agreed. DH seems intent on Alexander. Jem I understand the Welsh thing I am Welsh and was after a Welsh name for my Child. We had one for DS1 if he had been a girl but I'm a little less inclined on Welsh boys names they're not really ideal for growing up in the Midlands - although I am trying to get DH to consider some what I would call mild Welsh names such as Lloyd or Owen.

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 16/05/2007 17:59

Strech - i know what you mean about matching T- Shirts, my ds will be 5 in november and im going to get them in matching tops at least once before he refuses to do it!! He has a thing about clothes, must take after me !!

Kite -and any one else , would love to discuss bamboo tomorrow!!!!!

lizziemun · 16/05/2007 20:42

God i'm fed up with posting at odd times when no-one is around. Can't wait for laptop to come back fixed from mastercare (2nd time lucky).

As for names if we have a boy dh waant's to name after his dad (Robert) which i don't mind and like. As for if we have a girl we have no idea (last time we dd was given the only one we could agree on)

I like the following

Alexandra, Georgina, Lorelei, Charlotte and Victoria

DH likes

Ruby

SweetyDarling · 16/05/2007 20:50

Hi Lizzie, I'm, the same. Odd hours - Billie no mates!

kiteflying · 17/05/2007 10:19

Lizziemun, what gorgeous girls' names. Sorry you are not getting to chat when everyone else is on the board. My other half also likes Ruby, but I decided on a whim against as it is becoming so popular. The great thing about your names is they all have good nicknames as well as being lovely in full for when she grows up (the boardroom test...) I also liked Nina for Georgina, although I realise most people use Georgie. I had a friend at college who was Gina as well. Lorelei is gorgeous.

Stretchmarks, the babyshow sounds like fun. How long did you spend with the 4D scan? I have been put off them by the fact that I heard that people spend up to forty minutes getting the right angles etc.

I would not be apologetic about the matching clothes. My cousin swore she would not do it with her twins after reading all the right parenting guides that tell you to individualise etc etc, but guess what, she caved, and the girls are very much their own separate selves anyway. So, I think it falls into that category of if it doesn't cause friction, why not?

So bamboo? Anyone actually used it before? Horror stories about drying time put me off the Tots Bots, but I bought some straight terry style nappies in bamboo from ebay and thought they were the softest loveliest things for a newborn. Am going to buy some bamboo cloth from a website I found through ebay and make some more squares.

I bought a lot of my nappies from ebay and some of the used ones seem a bit harsh/crinkley - like old towels that have not used fabric conditioner. The Motherease Sandy nappies I bought are like this. They are otherwise perfect and I believe strongly in using second hand if I can so any tips for getting them soft again without using chemicals would be much appreciated.
Also does anyone know whether you can use a nappy service if you don't want phosphate based cleaning solutions used on your nappies, or are you stuck doing them yourself if you want to stay green?

stretchmarks · 17/05/2007 11:25

HI Kite,

The 4D scan was just a 15min appointment. I had been booked in for the longer session at another clinic which was £170 but this one just cost £70 for 15 mins which was fine. It gave DS1 a chance to see his brother and we got a little dvd of a sleeping baby and a CD rom of photos (still trying to upload - think I need to reduce the file size)

No tips for getting cotton nappies soft again - have you tried some of the nappy threads ?

loler · 17/05/2007 11:28

So bamboo......

I've got tots bots bamboo and cotton, take about the same time to dry but bamboo slightly quicker. The bamboo ones do go harder when used but still stay much softer than any cotton ones.

To get second hand/old nappies soft again (ebay have stopped selling used ones - apparently they are classed as used underwear!) - soak in white vinegar. Tumble drying also really softens them up - if you haven't got one ask someone to do it once as a favour.

The bamboo ones I have just bought are little lamb bamboo nappy trial pack . Look about half way down - it's a bargin as they are about half price. I ordered the cotton one too.

I'm planning on buying (as long as DH doesn't find out!) some more tots bots bamboozles with popper fastenings in size 2 - these can do a baby from 10 lb and they still fit my big fat chunky thighed 2 year old, so should do all the way through!

Sorry....I'm so boring!

stretchmarks · 17/05/2007 11:45

I've uploaded a couple of the 4D photos now from Sunday.

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 17/05/2007 11:50

That is so cool!!!!

MrsBadger · 17/05/2007 11:50

fantastic pictures, stretchy! You must be so pleased

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 17/05/2007 11:52

ive had someone round to see me about nappies, i like the MOE ones but think they look big for baby so will maybe use them when they are moving but love the tot bots terrys and the totbots bamboo ( they are so soft) are these good ons ?? i used dispoables on ds so dont have much of a clue this time round!

stretchmarks · 17/05/2007 11:54

They were quite good the others are a bit blurry as he was fast asleep with his head on the placenta and his little hands up the other side of his face.

I definately think he looks like DS1. I was measuring big at my midwife appt this morning I think it's down to those chubby cheeks !!!

bananabump · 17/05/2007 12:05

Ooh, lovely pics, what a cutie!

Just got back from my glucose tolerance test at the hospital which wasn't as horrific as I thought it'd be, although she had to try to take blood a few times because my veins are very unco-operative! Now just to wait and see I suppose. Fingers crossed it's all clear.

Kept seeing massive bumps on the antenatal unit and feeling like a fraud! I spose by the time I have a massive bump I'll be feeling like a fraud compared to all the new mums walking about with newborns, too.

Anyone suffering from pregnancy porridge brain at the moment? Mines so bad, yesterday I chucked a plate in the bin, and last week I washed my hands and left the bathroom tap pouring away for two hours before I needed the loo again. D'oh!

stretchmarks · 17/05/2007 12:09

HI Banana - I;ve had pregnancy porridge brain for a while now. So far this pregnancy I have put the cat food in the bin and the wrapper in her bowl, and tried to buy the paper this morning and realised I'd left my purse at home - doh

kiteflying · 17/05/2007 12:27

LOL at porridge brain stories! Glad the glucose test went OK bananabump.

Stretchmarks those pics are gorgeous - they don't seem too fuzzy to me. Was your son thrilled?

Am I right that you had them done at the babyshow, or did you go to a clinic on the same day as the show?

Loler thanks for the tips on getting these nappies soft again. I will try the white vinegar as well as tumble drying. We have a tumble dryer.
