Makes my moan seem a non issue in comparison but still wondered if anyone has any ideas to help.
Since becoming pregnant my upstairs shower has leaked through to the downstairs kitchen, luckily the leak itself hasn't caused any obvious damage but has shown up that our shower wasn't properly installed by dodgy diy man that we bought the house from so all our savings have now had to go on getting the bathroom redone (domino effect of new shower). I've now woken up this morning to a cold shower as my boiler has decided to pack in as well!
We are kindly being helped by family to buy most of the big stuff for baby but I'm so worried about coping on maternity pay now we have no savings! I've made my little spreadsheet and it doesn't make me feel much better! Can someone reassure me that we will cope next year? I earn a decent salary as a teacher and husband earns a bit less but ok amount. Baby was an unexpected but lovely surprise that we thought we would have 9 months to save up to help us cope, feels like that has been taken from us now!

seren I really can't offer any piece of useful advice but just wanted to say our boiler has conked out too!! Last night I noticed when my shower was lukewarm, was hoping it was nothing but this morning the water ran cold. Have had to ask ExP to take DS for the whole week as DS can't have cold baths at my house! I'm dreading how much a new boiler will cost. Money is also v tight in our house.

@serendipper perhaps think that the fact you had savings makes this a squeeze rather than a catastrophe?

Can you do a super frugal October? In the vein of www.frugalwoods.com/2016/12/05/lets-take-the-uber-frugal-month-challenge-together/ *disclaimer, I have absolutely NO desire to do such a thing but it might both give you confidence and help you discover what your actual spending priorities are. And possibly give you a little bit of a cushion to take you into maternity.

Do you get a better than SMP deal? That also makes things more possible, although it will depend on outgoings. Another reason to review the outgoings now and see if you can bring down.

Your money on going out, and transport, will probably drop with not being at work/ taking care of tiny dependent thing.

We're currently (finally) replacing flooring in our house, having moved in two years ago. Our vendor wasn't a bodge job man, he just made some really mystifying decor choices and was refurbing to sell so everything was scavenged materials. Which may seem like an absolute crazy thing to do, but I don't think I could do the disruption with small child/ baby. And they were disgusting. I am just living with putting a new floor in a kitchen that will need replacing in two years time. We really, really do not have money for a new kitchen!

Is anyone else's boobs leaking yet? I'm 24 weeks and my left boob is leaking 🙈

@Serendipper another one here with home improvements eating into maternity savings! 🙋🏻 We live in a (very cold) old terraced house and have had to have all of the radiators replaced ahead of baby arriving during the winter months! Coupled with redecorating upstairs, new carpets and furnishings needed etc means I have zero savings for next year. We'll definitely be cutting back as much as possible for the next few months to hopefully build up a small cushion for ourselves

Another one here with home improvements. I also thought getting pregnant would mean 9 months of hard saving. Realistically we have another 2k to spend before the house is liveable with a baby (no kitchen or dining floor down), as we did a conversion earlier this year that was paid for month by month as wages came in.
It is worrying, but I know we will be okay if we are sensible next year.

Thanks ladies, I am feeling better about things now. I think I was winding myself up about feeling like some irresponsible teenager having a baby I couldn't afford. In reality I'm a teacher with a decent maternity package and a husband with a salary too. I know I'm in an ok position but you just feel like the rug is pulled out from under you when so much goes wrong and eats into your savings. We have some debts to pay off and I can't shake this feeling that we should have waited a year to be better off, when all I want is to be feeling excited about our lovely new arrival. As much as I don't wish difficulty on any of you it is reassuring to know we aren't the only ones in this position and that we will all be muddling through together! Everyone said a house would be a money pit and they sure are right, but we will all be glad when the mess is out of the way before baby arrives and we have lovely new rooms to enjoy! I guess we just need to get used to having no money ever again when babies come!

@hotpinkangel19 yes me! Not massively but enough I'm needing to wear pads in my bra

Yup, we're buying our first house (moving on 20th October!) and have quite a bit of DIY to do before the baby arrives in January. I have a very complicated system of interlinked spreadsheets with an ever-changing budget...! Hoping to take the full year off too so we have to snaffle away some savings for that. Goodness knows if it'll work - I'm definitely going to be buying everything for the baby second-hand (barring mattress and car-seat of course).

We are also in the process of buying our first house - it's a two bed bungalow with a huge garden but needed so much work doing to it. We finalised and then I found out I was pregnant. It's starting to get on top of me as we move in in November and this is our living room currently! The rest of the house has no flooring, plastering hasn't been done, the boiler hasn't been fitted yet and it needs totally rewiring :(

On top of this I have our wedding to sort, which I am doing totally by myself, and we get married on the 13th of October. I am so stressed!

Sorry ladies I just needed a rant xxx

Those with home improvements and the financial burden of that, I feel your pain and the words 'money pit' keep coming back to haunt me!

We bought our house 3 years ago in November. DH wasn't sure about the property because it obviously needed a lot of work doing. I convinced him that it would be superficial work and that I as the 'DIY'er' in our family and only working part time would be able to take on most of it.

3 years later and we find ourselves trying to fix one major problem after the next and as soon as I complete one job another 3 need addressing. This weekend we've had damp showing through utility wall, wallpaper peeling off and damp around chimney breast in DS (newly plastered) room. The week previous I'd been told by a roofer that the whole roof needs replacing, we thought it just needed a few repairs here and there.

So now we are looking at the whole house being re pointed, damp proofed, re roofed, re wired and re plastered. Definitely not cosmetic!!!

DH wants to move but I want to stay and fix problems because I love it so much. I have an emotional attachment and want to stay here for a very long time! We also wouldn't be able to afford to move into anything close to the size of this property.

We can't afford to fix everything at once so we are going to have to live with things and tackle one major problem at a time over the next few years! So stressful especially now with baby on the way but I keep thinking what it will be like when it's done and I still believe it will be worth it!

Feels really good to have a rant!
