This talk of waters breaking and waterproof covers reminds me of the physio I saw. She suggested I bring a carrier bag to sit on in taxis (we don't have a car) so I can elegantly pivot to get out with knees together to avoid irritating PGP. Just imagining the horror on cabbie's face when heavily pregnant woman waddles over and sits on a bag 😂

savagehk · 22/04/2017 09:46

Good luck wish !

Re mattress protectors, definitely. My waters went while I was cooking, so not in bed, but useful later on for when babies / toddlers end up next to you in bed. All our mattresses now have a waterproof cover on - the best ones are this type www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk/bedding/mattress-protectors/ - sadly they don't make them big enough for our bed, so we have a towelling/plastic one from John Lewis instead.

I'm packing the birth bag today, bump got very uncomfortable yesterday afternoon/evening, it's dropped more or something (I was uncomfortable cycling and driving was also very odd) and then I had a sore/tense bump as well. May just have been a BH with baby in an odd position - seems to have gone now - but enough to get me a bit worried that this one might not take as long as its older brother did! Also cue mild work-related panic as only 9 days left now :S

Need to do a towel and shower curtain inventory to make sure enough available for the home birth as well. Luckily I figure my towelling dressing gown would work for me post birth.

Badgerbird · 22/04/2017 09:46

Oops I took so long to type my questions got answered before I asked!!

missy that was such amazing timing! Could go on like that for weeks though Confused ok!

Any advice on waterproof mattress covers that don't make you sweat like some horrid hotel ones? Or should I just use a puppy training pad thing? Another one here who bought new mattress whilst pregnant. Girls gotta be comfy!!

Hope today's a better day jenny Brew

Badgerbird · 22/04/2017 09:54

Thanks for mattress protector link savage but think im gonna look for one to cover whole mattress (forgot we want to have her in with us when we can so puppy pad no good), they only go upto single.

Got my birth "plan" appointment on Mon to discuss hb etc. Anything I particularly need to ask or think about fellow hb peeps? Got some old towels and shower curtains savage :)

ShiniBerry · 22/04/2017 09:56

Autumn i bought a waterproof bed mat (apparently used for incontinence and kids who wet beds!) for my side of the bed as we also got a new mattress about 2 months ago, have been sleeping on it since 35-36 weeks.

beachsands · 22/04/2017 10:08

wish best if luck - rise midwife told DH that waters can leave an awful smell in car seats so no harm with the cover!

ClaireSunflower · 22/04/2017 10:11

We have a tempur waterproof mattress protector. It was about £90 when we bought it last year which seemed ridiculously expensive but glad I got it now. It's completely waterproof but very thin and not rustley at all. I figured if we want to keep our mattress for 8-10 years it would be worth it.

Re baby mattress protector I got the little green sheep one that @savagehk mentioned earlier and it fits our chicco next to me cot

mrscrocopop · 22/04/2017 10:13

Congratulations northern.

Good luck wish!

For those asking about mattress protectors - we got one from dunelm - it was 19.99 for a king size sheet. It's not crinkly or sweaty I don't think. I have put my usual mattress protector over the top of it & a sheet on top of that - you would have no idea it's there.

savagehk · 22/04/2017 10:23

Also worth packing bin bags in case for car etc.

WishIWasSleeping · 22/04/2017 10:31

I did not think my waters would start leaking in bed. I naively thought I would feel them before they got out! I would have possibly paid attention to this chat prior to this morning!! Confused
As it stands I had no towel and no mattress protector and we only brought the mattress in November! A good clean will be fine I'm sure as I got straight up so it will have only gone on the topper we have. Grin
My tightenings have gone away after I've had a little walk and some breakfast...

Ladies don't forget to pack flip flops and baby wipes (for you to freshen up) in your bags like I have... GrinGrin

Badgerbird · 22/04/2017 10:37

mrscroc is it waterproof?

mrscrocopop · 22/04/2017 11:59

Badgerbird - yes it's waterproof. I'll see if I can find the link for the one we bought.

mrscrocopop · 22/04/2017 12:02

Badgerbird - I think this is the one. We've had it on a few weeks now so memory is slightly hazy Confused I know it wasn't a fancy branded one.

MrsJW15 · 22/04/2017 12:23

Good luck Wish!

We also recently got a waterproof mattress protector. Not sure I love the feel of it though. It's not an expensive one, just something from Amazon. Bags to sit on in the taxi sound like a good plan.

teainbed · 22/04/2017 12:38

Good luck @WishIWasSleeping will be thinking of you. Hopefully you start labouring yourself!

Sounds like everyone else is getting ready to have babies!

I feel like we're in the calm before the storm phase with BabyTea. He's been very chilled the last few days, and although we'd been holding and carrying him a lot he has managed to have a few naps in his Moses basket. Which wasn't a deliberate decision in terms of parenting but meant I managed to do some reading and baking with my DD's yesterday which was lovely and DH took DS out. But my recollection with the others is that they 'wake up' at some point and make themselves known to the world!

teainbed · 22/04/2017 12:39

Re mattress protectors I slept on a towel or an incontinence pad for the first few days after giving birth too in case there was any leaking.

RasperryInAMelon · 22/04/2017 13:29

@Rabbitykins55 how are you feeling after yesterday's twinges?

@ClaireSunflower I hope you had a good last day at work? Also excellent news about your placenta!

@beachsands I'm really suffering with nausea again at the moment - so horrible and I can't seem to find anything to subside it

@ShiniBerry the sleep felt amazing but was short lived... bloody exhausted again today after 2 stints of 3 hours... 😩 I'm going to try and go for a nap this afternoon I think...

@Autumnsweater it's infuriating being given an appointment somewhere that also deals with walk ins isn't it. Waterproofing the bed, I've put a puppy pad under the bed sheet which will hopefully work?

@Northernexile Huge congratulations on the safe arrival of your baby boy!

@Tickyboovicki I've started being really snappy too - am spending the weekend at my parents and lost my shit with my mum last night over nothing and sheepishly had to apologise later. Poor DH is taking the brunt of it though 🙈

@WishIWasSleeping how exciting! Keep us in the loop!

Tickyboovicki · 22/04/2017 13:35

wish so excited for you! Hope all goes well 😊
Also great shout on the baby wipes! Will be adding to my hospital bag next time I go upstairs.

Also thanks to everyone for the reminder to put my mattress pad thing on my mattress tonight!

newbieho · 22/04/2017 13:40

I second tempur mattress protector - very expensive but worth buying if you have a new bed/mattress. It have also put a maternity protector pad underneath just in case.

Autumnsweater · 22/04/2017 13:45

I love that so many of us bought new mattresses whilst pregnant Grin got to get comfy!! I'll get one of the protectors recommended today and use a towel in the meantime!

I'm so jealous of those still managing to get out walking/cycling, especially in this nice weather - my PGP has really scuppered me in the second half of pregnancy, I cried today after walking the dogs and I can only manage to get to the field 2 minutes walk away.

36 weeks today hope I don't have another 6 weeks of this.. any second timers had PGP last time? How long does it take to recover? My physio said it often persists through breastfeeding..

Rabbitykins55 · 22/04/2017 13:48

@RasperryInAMelon I've got pretty much constant lower back and thigh aches now but nothing else has happened.

McBaby · 22/04/2017 14:39

@autumsweter I never had signs of spd after dd1 or dd2 I think it's a bit of a myth that it sticks around due to breastfeeding. Mine tends to start easing up towards the end of pregnancy when the head engages as it stabilises the joints more

With dd1 I was going for a walk around the block every days for the last few weeks from about 37 weeks but between. 26-37 weeks I could barely move out of bed.

MrsJW15 · 22/04/2017 14:44

Autumn I'm also very uncomfortable. Managing some walking but not much. My physio said it should go fairly quickly after birth... I hope so!

lullaby23 · 22/04/2017 15:00

autumn I found the spd went away immediately after birth, back pain persisted for a few weeks but I think linked to my existing back issues. I'm not convinced about bf making recovery worse though, advice here about being careful over position:www.pelvicpartnership.org.uk/practical-suggestions/feeding

Autumnsweater · 22/04/2017 15:48

Mcbaby Lullaby MrsJW
Music to my ears!! Light at the end of the tunnel hopefully.. I'm normally quite stoical so have been taken aback by how much this has affected me.

Lullaby interesting link thanks. The physio did say about hormones too which appears to be outdated. I do think I have underlying problems which I need to get investigated.
