Thanks for the warm welcome ladies and nice to have a couple of due date buddies too! Just got my booking in appt for a weeks time.

Mommytobe2017 · 26/10/2016 12:47

I know it's a bit early but can I ask you all about antenatal classes?

I would like to go as it's my first and it's been 19 years since my youngest sister was born. DP is coming to all my appts and scans but he doesn't want to go to any classes.

Do you know if there are classes that you can take a friend or parent with you?

MoonlightMojitos · 26/10/2016 12:48

Welcome element! Congrats after such a difficult journey, hope everything goes well for you xx

dizzy my work gives us all a voucher for flu jab but when I went to get mine doe they said they wouldn't do it if you're pg! So make sure you ask before paying.

We've managed to get a cancellation for an early scan next Monday at 7pm. Bit annoying as my booking appointment is at 2pm same day and I wanted the scan before the booking ideally but still be good to get some reassurance.

Hello. I've just joined mumsnet and I'm a June 2017 due date girl too. I'm 41 and this is my first ever pregnancy. Yay! We conceived after 5 months off the pill/after our wedding, which was a huge relief at my age. Coming off the pill was a bit of a rollercoaster of weird symptoms, so I wish I'd come off earlier and made it easier on myself. I think I'm roughly 6 weeks. It's a really scary few weeks ahead now because I know miscarriage is really high at my age. My DH is 32 and it's also his first. We are trying to hold back our excitement until we get our first scan next week and we won't tell anyone else at all until we get the results back from the chromosome blood test we're paying (a fortune) for at 10 weeks. It's hard because time is going so slowly carrying this big secret!

Masweetpea1 · 26/10/2016 12:56

Welcome golden, I'm also 41, i have a daughter already and had a mc in July. She completely about the age thing being a factor but hopefully we'll be ok!

Mommytobe2017 · 26/10/2016 12:59

I've just been reading that antenatal classes aren't until you're about 30 weeks. Ahaha! Forget I asked Grin

DizzyNorthernBird · 26/10/2016 13:10

My work used to do free flu jabs on site (am a key worker) but they've stopped now due to budget cuts! They might do vouchers though, I'll look into it!

I've just been out for a run, it was really weird as I had bags of energy but it was combined with moments of wanting to stop and throw up! I got home without vomming and then had a big wave of nausea and retching as I got through the door. I've only had a yoghurt this morning so it might be hunger. I'm having beans and sausages on toast for lunch, yummy! Grin

Welcome golden & congratulations! I know what you mean about time dragging, my missed period was only two weeks ago and I swear time has pretty much ground to a halt since then!

NappingRabbit · 26/10/2016 13:28

Welcome all newbies and Flowers to element, sorry you've had such a hard time. Wishing you all the luck in the world for a healthy pregnancy.

Re antenatal classes, I would try and persuade your DH to go with you. Mine was reluctant but happy to go if that was what I wanted, and it's been nice for him having some local dad friends - they've done dad and baby brunches etc. It was also useful for him to get all the info. He knew quite a lot but there were bits and pieces that surprised him (eg how squashed up all your organs are when you're 9 months pregnant!) and made him more sympathetic to my moaning!

sleepylil · 26/10/2016 14:13

dizzy my booking in isn't until I'm 10 +4 and they won't book my scan until I've had that appointment so it will be a last min job to get scan booked in in time for testing but they will do it, was exactly the same last time.
Just make sure you keep on their backs and don't get forgotten about.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 26/10/2016 16:38

We have self referral to the midwife in my area but you cannot self refer until you are over 7 weeks.

I have had more pinkish discharge / spotting today. I phoned the EPU and they have run out of scanning slots today but said if I have any more spotting overnight to ring them in the morning and they will get me in for a scan. I'm tempted to ring them regardless as this is the 3rd day in the last 10 days that have had some spotting. But then I would feel guilty if I took a slot that somebody else needs. DH is off work for the next few days so at least he can look after the children if I need to go to the EPU. These early weeks are so worrying!

HazyHazyJeans · 26/10/2016 16:52

Oh six I hope it's nothing to worry about. I'd probably try to get a scan tomorrow if it was me too.

mommy I dragged DH to the antenatal classes last time & he did actually get a lot from it. They even told us basic things like where to park the car when you come into the labour ward which was actually really useful. Plus things like how they can put a clip on the baby's head to monitor the heart rate blew DH's mind! As you say though, plenty of time before you need to worry about those classes Smile

Sixisthemagicnumber · 26/10/2016 16:59

When I had my first I took DH to antenatal classes and it was useful. They told DH stuff like how to help during labour, they let everyone try gas and air (it was 15 years ago so not sure if that is still allowed). They went through how he can time contractions and they even showed us a placenta from a recent delivery. We did the practical stuff like visiting the delivery suite and car parking at night etc but the 'what actually happens in labour' stuff was really helpful for us both.

KittyVonCatsington · 26/10/2016 17:03

I've had some bad experiences with NCT so I'm probably not the best person for advice for antenatal classes but I also attended the free NHS ones locally. I liked that fact that it was run by my midwives and they could tell me what I could and couldn't expect at my hospital, rather than just the guesswork at my NCT classes.
I am also still very close friends with four Mums I met at the free ones, whereas the NCT group I was in didn't 'gel' as well unfortunately and it was more hard work that I'd been led to have believed it would be.

The best advice I got and continue to get, was from Mumsnet and other Internet sources/groups!

MoonlightMojitos · 26/10/2016 17:05

My do has been really good and has already had a look into nct classes which he wants to come to, off his own back so that's nice! Not booking one for a few more weeks yet though but I've heard the nct ones do get booked really quickly so worth booking after your dating scan if you do want to do them.

I weighed myself last night.... I've put on 8 LBS already! Don't know why I'm suprised as I havnt stopped eating for 4 weeks but that's still a massive amount for me when I was consistently a small size 10 before! I have a massive bloated belly. Hoping in a few weeks once the nausea stops I'll settle down and not put any more on for a few months! Otherwise I'll be massive if I carry on putting on 2lbs a week plus the actual baby weight lol.

babyand · 26/10/2016 17:10

Hope your ok six try get in for a scan as it will put ur mind at rest.

When I had my dd In 2015 my partner came to the antenatal classes with me and I must say we both really got benefit from it. Especially the part where the got everyone to stand around with one person lying down, showing just how many people will be in the room in the event of an emergency section. Which is what happened me. I think if we hadn't done the class together we would have panicked as to why there were sooooo many people in the room !

peaceloveandbiscuits · 26/10/2016 17:40

I'd be interested to hear what your bad experience with NCT was kitty?

DH and I went to the bf class when I was preg with my first, then never made it to the labour and pain relief as DS1 had already arrived by EmCS before that class!

Attended the labour and pain relief one on my own when preg with DS2 and it was helpful. Won't bother this time with either as I'm clued up, know what I want and know more about bf than they do. Plus I know they run them on a night I work and I'm saving holiday to use before mat leave. Will be going thru natal hypnotherapy with DH for this birth tho.

Dragon5000 · 26/10/2016 17:42

Welcome newbies!

flashing love diggerland!

When I saw my Dr to register my pregnancy at about 4 weeks my Dr did my flu jab there and then.

I didn't find anything useful about antenatal and there was no way dh would go! I did do pregnancy yoga at the end and loved it and will Def do that again

haveacupoftea · 26/10/2016 17:47

What a day, woke up this morning with NO symptoms, not even a sore boob, slept right through last night without needing a wee, convinved myself it was all over then had brown mucus spotting as well. Rung EPU for advice and all is well, phew! Got to see heartbeat Smile picture quality is very poor probably due to my high BMI I imagine Blush

8+5 (measuring as 8W0D but sticking with LMP EDD til 12 week scan)

dragon I'm jealous of your booking in at 4 weeks... the MW won't even call me to arrange an appointment until 10 weeks (I checked again today), and I'm mega busy at work then so I can't guarantee that I will just be able to make any time they give me.

I've been given no advice on nutrition or supplements, and my records show that I have been on anti depressants and beta blockers on and off over the last 6 months and am currently attending anxiety management classes... I would have thought they would want to talk to me about that!

It's fortunate that I have a great support network - and have googled everything and then some - I can see how women who don't could fall through the cracks at this point and miss out on essential information etc.

KittyVonCatsington · 26/10/2016 17:53

Sorry peace-don't want to put people off NCT as it is all so variable but it was a mixture of things for me.

Awful breastfeeding 'advice' from someone who had never breastfed, including little information on tongue tie and what to do if supply was low and wasn't told about all the different positions you can try.

Very little information once the baby had been born (one example was, at my free NHS antenatal, was warned baby girls a day or so old, have a mini 'period' or spotting in their nappies, which is from hormones from us-never mentioned at NCT. I'd have freaked when I saw the blood if I didn't know that!)

I had a group of parents who either went back to work very early, moved or were a bit rubbish at keeping in touch (that was bad luck I'm sure), yet everything felt like a competition.

£300 odd quid I wish we hadn't spent to be honest!

KittyVonCatsington · 26/10/2016 17:54

So sorry you had brown my as have so glad all is well and what a lovely scan photo!!'

KittyVonCatsington · 26/10/2016 17:54

*mucas not my

HazyHazyJeans · 26/10/2016 18:02

Lovely pic haveacup so glad all is well!

babyand our class did the exercise to show how many people would be in the room if you had a CS too. I didn't have to in the end but I agree, it was very useful.

The classes I'm referring to are just the nhs ones at the hospital. I didn't do nct. I know some people who had great experiences with nct & some less positive ones. I think it very much depends on the mix of people which you can't really predict,

VeganMama83 · 26/10/2016 18:10

Great news cupoftea! Can't wait for my scan Friday now!
