For those of you buying new car seats that are going to get a base, it's worth thinking about which car seat you want next too. I bought a maxi cosi with a family fix base thinking I could use the base with the next stage car seat too. Unfortunately that next stage car seat was forward facing and there has been new I-size legislation with a safer standard of seats. Although the forward facing seats are still legal I wanted a rear facing one for longer as it's safer and a seat that complies with the I-size legislation. Just personal preference but that decision to get another rear facing seat cost me an extra £400. In hindsight I would have got something like a BeSafe seat. The same base can be used for all their seats and they do rear facing up to 4 years. Sorry that's a bit waffled - hope it makes sense! I was awake for ages last night stressing about my scan tomorrow.

twocatsandatoddler · 22/09/2016 08:56

Friendly I did exactly the same thing with the pebble and familyfix base! We ended up buying the 2wayfix and the 2way Pearl earlier this year, which was expensive but we knew we'd be trying for a second soon and would need to fork out for two bases anyway so it worked out OK as it means we don't need anything new now.

We actually have a spare forward facing stage 1 car seat which straps in via seatbelt as our Pearl is isofix only and my FIL's car doesn't have isofix, and he's the most likely person to be able to pick up DS if we need short notice childcare (such as when I go into labour) as he's retired and PIL are only an hour's drive away (MIL is a vicar and is always really busy so it's FIL that gets all the babysitting duties!)

I figure if there's a small period when DS2 needs the stage 1 seat before DS1 has grown into the next stage up then we can move him into our spare for a while. So thankfully we don't have to buy a new car seat for a few years, as we worked out last week we've spent £700 on them so far! ShockConfused

FriendlyGhost · 22/09/2016 09:05

Sorry you did it too twocats. I'm going to use the pebble for the new baby and then will probably have to fork out another £400 when it's just over 1. I bought a Nuna Rebl for dd which is great because it swivels. Makes wrestling a struggling toddler into the car a lot easier! Maybe they'll have come down in price by then .

kikisdelivery · 22/09/2016 09:16

I fitted our car seat over the weekend just gone. I think we'll go with seatbelt only and then when it's bigger, get a proper base etc and the next proper seat up. It's held in by the belt and the manufacturer's own site doesn't include any info about needing a base too, so we're going to go with just belt. Our car's a bit of a classic....!.... so the seat's pretty snug in there anyway. It'll be a bit of a fiddle to sort the belt the first few times initially, but we'll get used to it I'm sure.

Also thanks to everyone who gave furniture suggestions! I think I'll just get some nice drawers and maybe put a few shelves up in the room, for storage/personal items and decorations.

kikisdelivery · 22/09/2016 09:20

Oh, and Ever, I'm exactly 20 weeks today. For the past week or so I've been feeling movement here and there - quite a bit on Tuesday, for some reason! - but yesterday and so far today, nothing. It's hard not to get focussed on it, but I am trying to remind myself that everything's still pretty small so if bubs has moved back, I'll not feel anything/very little.

My scan is tomorrow afternoon, fingers crossed everything is ok.... I'm getting those nervy flutters again.

SkyLucy · 22/09/2016 09:25

Morning all, found you!

Reassuring to see all the big boob chat...I'm wearing a 38DD for the first time ever today and it's soooo comfortable! Still in size 10 jeans though...I am comically disproportionate!!

Great news on all the scans! Mine's on Tuesday, can't wait! Feels like an absolute age since the 12-week scan, but baby's a right little wriggler so I'm somewhat reassured. Still nervous though...X

Vixxfacee · 22/09/2016 09:26

Lovely scan pic IF.

Ever I didn't feel anything until 20.2 weeks. Then he was moving lots and could be seen from the outside. The last 2 days barely anything. I have a doppler and before the heartbeat was really low but when I checked yesterday it was high up to my left so I think they move around so much and face different ways. I have an anterior placenta too so that's why I didn't feel any flutters or movements.

PianoOnlyTheWhiteKeys · 22/09/2016 10:10

Car seats are the one thing I can't get my head around, my colleague was telling me about his new purchase of the isofix 2 and my head nearly exploded at the thought of all the combinations!

Can I ask, at what point is everyone having their 20 wk scans? I'll be 22 wks next Tuesday when I have mine, isn't that quite late? I'm not sure how they work out the measurements when it's two weeks "older" than it should be...

CeeCeeEnnEss · 22/09/2016 10:18

I'm another one considering a private scan just to double check baby's sex in a few weeks time. We won't be telling anyone because it's a delicious secret just for us (and our MN friends) but I don't want to get attached to a daughter and for her to come out with a teeny weenie!

twocatsandatoddler · 22/09/2016 10:22

Piano they match the measurements to the gestational age, I was 20+5 at my scan and I was measured against stats for 20+5 - you'll be measured against stats for 22 weeks. Same as for the 12 week scan when people tend to be somewhere between 11 and 14 weeks, and they compare the measurements against the age.

Shellbell0403 · 22/09/2016 10:23

piano i will be 20+3 weeks. I think it's between 20 and 22 weeks?

Ceecee we haven't told anyone either.. ours is our and mn secret too haha

LondonGirl83 · 22/09/2016 10:38

Dotty we are like you-- we almost never drive anywhere. That's why we aren't bothering with the isofix base. We mostly get ubers so we wouldn't be able to permanently leave the base in a car anyhow. If we realise we need to buy a car once we have a baby then we will reconsider then as it might be worth it for convenience sake.

LondonGirl83 · 22/09/2016 10:45

Dotty to seat belt doesn't go over there legs as such. Its hard to explain. If you go to JL they can do a demonstration for you.

Congrats Ifatfirst!

DottyA · 22/09/2016 10:48

See, we do have a car London but it really isn't used much. Maybe once a fortnight. My partner uses it more than me for his hobbies but it's pretty much always better to walk or bus in Brighton as parking is rubbish. And I'm an online supermarket shopper. I guess it depends how often we end up wanting to go away at weekends etc. Really though, I just want to sell the car and buy a campervan as I reckon we'd actually use that more!

DottyA · 22/09/2016 10:50

Yes, I definitely think a trip to JL is in order London - once I've had the scan in 2 weeks I'll be a lot keener to start doing that kind of stuff I think.

kikisdelivery · 22/09/2016 11:05

Piano mine's tomorrow, when I'll be 20+1. I am sure my local NHS Trust site for the maternity hospital says it'll be any time between 20-22 weeks though, so I guess I was just lucky to get my appointment right on the early part of the window.

CeeCeeEnnEss · 22/09/2016 11:24

Glad it's not just me ShellBell!! I feel bad for lying when I get asked, but DH and I love being the only ones to know. We're still decorating and buying neutral stuff.

Shellbell0403 · 22/09/2016 11:34

ceecee i buy pink things and then hide them in a box which we bought haha! Don't know what I will do if go for scan next week and she says it's not a girl 😂
Had a feeling baba wasn't there today for some reason!!

It's so hard choosing a pram and a name!! Lol

GinIsIn · 22/09/2016 12:01

Morning all! The 'sleep on the right' thing has been disproved now, apparently.

Ever - count the kicks is only really used from 24-26 weeks and if it's your first, they don't tend to worry if you don't feel an established pattern of movement until 28 weeks!

kikisdelivery · 22/09/2016 12:11

I asked my midwife about the sleeping thing too. She said I should still continue to try and sleep on whatever side was comfy, or even my back if that was most comfy. She said that my back would probably become more uncomfortable as time went on, so it's not that they say don't do it, it's that the baby is heavy and it all just gets sore and not comfy. I am trying to sleep on either of my sides at the moment, as I must admit I have now noticed my back is a bit more sore. I really dislike sleeping on my sides though - it's a right pain!

ChozzleopsTheThird · 22/09/2016 12:26

Using a seatbelt is not as safe as using isofix.

On one of the car seats crash tested on Which it got 5/5 for side impact when fitted with isofix, this dropped to 3/5 when used with a seatbelt.

Definitely get isofix, not worth such a big drop in safety.

wispaxmas · 22/09/2016 12:49

We didn't bother with a base for the cabriofix we had. We only used it for 6 months before switching to a 0+/1 see with integrated isofix anyway. Personally I'm not sure what to do about the car seat this time as our old cabriofix was actually my nephew's, so is out of date and we recycled it. I'll be borrowing my friend's cabriofix for the very early days so I can find out if this baby will tolerate the car seat as DD just screamed in it all the time, so it lived in the car and was never used on the pram and we didn't bother carrying her in the seat ever. If this one is the same I will get another 0+/1 seat right away. If this one likes the cabriofix I'll buy an easygoing base for it, or potentially the 2wayfix base if the cost of the base + 2wayPearl is less than getting an ERF 0+/1 seat. I won't even bother thinking about it until the time comes to buy something, though.

MarjorySunshineDust · 22/09/2016 12:52

That's just one test and one car seat though.

We will be using seat belt again as the seat it will be moving between our car and my mums car, I never found it a hassle to strap in each time really. You soon get quick at it! I really need to have a look into car seats again as our first stage maxicosi has gone a bit mouldy after being stored in my mums shed.

MarjorySunshineDust · 22/09/2016 12:53

I might end up buying a second Joie stages as that's what DD is in at the moment (can rear face for longer) and pretty sure it comes with newborn insert.

wispaxmas · 22/09/2016 12:56

Easygoing, hah, autocorrected easyFIX
