wonder the sales guy who helped us at John Lewis said both are just as safe. The isofix base makes it foolproof as you get a green signal once its on properly but as long as you strap the carseat in with the seatbelt as instructed, there is no safety difference.

It really just depends on how confident you feel about doing the seatbelt method. He demonstrated it for us and it seems pretty straight forward and the instructions are on the side of the carseat so you can always check you've done it right.

We haven't bought a carseat yet but I don't think we'll get one.

FriendlyGhost · 21/09/2016 23:09

Wonderlust I did a lot of research on car seats for the first seat and then the next stage one and from what I can tell belted is just as safe as long as it's done properly. I personally prefer a base because it's just one click and the base tells you that the seat is fitted correctly. It somehow feels more secure too. I used to get dd's seat in and out of the car a lot with her in it so a base was really useful as I didn't have to fiddle with a seatbelt each time. Another thing to consider (I don't know if this is rare or not) but seatbelts aren't actually long enough to fit properly in some cars. Maybe because they've got isofix points so are designed so seats fit with them. I didn't realise this until a friend tried to give me a lift and her seatbelt wouldn't go around the car seat. It was a maxi cosi one so nothing special. She had a base for her dd's seat so hadn't realised it would be an issue. Worth checking if you don't get a base.

FriendlyGhost · 21/09/2016 23:10

Also although it's recommended that you get a new car seat so you can guarantee it hasn't been in an accident, you may be able to get bases cheaply second hand.

Readyfortwo · 22/09/2016 06:39

If you're using the car on a daily basis id get a base, it's so easy as you strap the baby in while you're in the house/pub/whatever & then just walk out & click in. You prob get quicker at doing the seatbelt method with practice but it's a bit awkward & isofix is just so quick.

wispa I had my daughter 18 years ago!!! It wasn't advice then so it's all new to me. Thanks for the tip on water wipes. Will maybe start with those. Cotton wool and water is a faff. Wow so much has changed!!

Evergreen17 · 22/09/2016 07:02

Shell Thanks for tips. Ideally I want to buy one on line as I live far from shops and I dont drive yet Sad
I am definitely getting the cheeky wipes Smile excited about those already
Diva I think because just water for newborns is the advice
I have a built in cupboard that has hanging space and shelves but no drawers so I think I will use the shelves and maybe buy some of those hanging accessories with shelves.

divadee · 22/09/2016 07:05

Thanks ever can I ask when they say you can use extra sensitive wet wipes is it 3 months?

Evergreen17 · 22/09/2016 07:06

Question about movement. I think I started to feel movement this week (19+3) but it is very sporadic. I was given some info on count the kicks and monitoring movement but I dont think I am feeling enough. Now I am worried Sad

Evergreen17 · 22/09/2016 07:07

Diva I cant remember about wipes I remember something about only using water to bath them at the beginning but not sure until when
Oh gosh so much to know

DottyA · 22/09/2016 07:08

Readyfortwo - that's interesting about the base, I hadn't thought of putting the baby in before you reach the car.

I'd assumed that I would leave the seat in the car as I don't plan to get a travel system type pram and don't need to drive much. Do people do that or is it too fiddly getting the baby in and out??

Found you! Thought it was odd that no-one was posting on the other thread! Grin

I used water and cotton wool with my first two but I remember it being a real faff so I'll be using the water wipes this time - much easier! A few mums I know have highly recommended Aldi nappies - just as good as pampers but half the price! Might be worth grabbing some in the baby event?

divadee · 22/09/2016 07:12

ever thanks will have to research. It has all changed as when they bathed daughter after she was born they dumped a load of baby bath by johnsons in the water!!!

Also regarding movement. You aren't expected to count kicks till at least 24 weeks I don't think. Before that bubs is too small to have regular movements that you will feel. I can have days where she is going mad in there. Yesterday I hardly felt anything. I'm 21+3

ScottishSnowflake · 22/09/2016 07:18

Ever, I only felt one or two small flicks every other day or so until my 20w scan - I only think I feel more now because of all the prodding the scan lady did. Please don't worry too much at the moment - your scan isn't too far away now and fingers crossed all is well.

Anyone bought/ seen a good maternity coat? My trusted waterproof is finally too small and with all the rain, I need to find something good.

When can we use water/ sensitive/ baby wipes on baby from? I'm now really looking forward to cotton wool and water tbh.

SausageDogGeorge · 22/09/2016 07:20

Dotty i found that it's much easier to get baby all sorted and strapped into the car seat in the house then carry them out and just clip into the car seat base. So much easier, especially if they are asleep or the weather is bad. Also; it means you have more hands free to carry other things!

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 22/09/2016 07:33

Well, we look to be having a girl! Possibly....... I was in there ages as it was being a little monkey, keeping its arms over its chest and face so they couldn't look at its heart and mouth/nose. Then to top it off, it had the cord between its legs so they couldn't see for sure.
They were pretty sure it wasn't a boy, but couldn't make any promises! Confused
My DM is beside herself not knowing if she's got the go ahead to start buying girl stuff!

I think I might book a private scan just to double check.

I'm of bra shopping today as I'm spilling out of mine. And some new maternity tights as I bought some from new look and they almost ended up round my ankles at work yesterday! Blush

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 22/09/2016 07:34

Oops forgot to attach scan. Our little ... Girl??

Due February 2017 - Thread 8!
MarjorySunshineDust · 22/09/2016 07:59

Our sonographer said she 'thinks' our baby is a girl but gave the usual disclaimer that they can't be 100%. My MIL latched onto this fact and is making me want to booked a private scan to be sure, even though I know they do often get it wrong!

Cotton wool tip: get the large cotton wool pads they sell for removing makeup as the balls are quite fiddly.

divadee · 22/09/2016 08:02

I've been trying to do some quick research on water v wet wipes and it's all mixed information. So wait till 6 months so use extra sensitive/ pure wipes straight away. Well that's cleared that up then Confused

DottyA · 22/09/2016 08:13

Thanks sausage - that's good to know. I think maybe the best thing to do is to start off without a base, but get a seat that's compatible with one so we can buy later if we want. The expense just doesn't seem worth it for our occasional driving, but I imagine we may end up driving more than now. If we do it'll suddenly seem much more worth it I'm sure!

Evergreen17 · 22/09/2016 08:15

Ahhh thanks Diva. I find it easy to find another reason to worry Confused I think normal as scan approaches though
Thanks Scottish 8 days to scan I cant wait!
I think I will end up buying that next one with the panel. DH really hates it when I wear puffy jackets but hey ho
Ifatfirst congrats!!! What a cutie Smile
I am just excited about the cheeky wipes! How sad am I?! Grin not even the baby clothes but the wipes. They come with two boxes to store clean / dirty, I mean.. Two boxes!!! GrinGrinGrin

twocatsandatoddler · 22/09/2016 08:22

Dotty I found it easy to leave the car seat in the car and strap DS in when on the base, but hard to do that when it was strapped in with seatbelt as the seatbelt goes over their legs meaning as they get bigger you have to sort of contort them into the seat legs first to get them under the strap! With the base it's easy to access the whole seat.

That said, once you know how to do it it really doesn't take long to strap the seat in via seat belt, so you could always unstrap the seat and carry the baby in with you, and likewise get them into the seat inside and carry it out to the car and strap it in then. It's just slightly more of a faff than the one-clock base.

Shellbell0403 · 22/09/2016 08:26

Congrats ifatfirst looks like a wee girl to me 😀
ever they say not to start looking for regular movement until about 24 weeks re count the kicks...

A week today until my 20week scan...

Still struggling to sleep in my left side all night

twocatsandatoddler · 22/09/2016 08:29

Shell I sleep on both sides and did throughout my last pregnancy. I don't think there's a significant risk from sleeping on your right, it's just that the left is optimal for blood flow to the baby. But I get dead arms and carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnancy so need to roll over to relieve the pressure on one side!

twocatsandatoddler · 22/09/2016 08:32

Congrats ifatfirst! I think with a girl they often can't be 100% certain. With a boy you can usually be more sure, there was definitely no ambiguity in our scan!

DottyA · 22/09/2016 08:32

Ah I didn't realise the seatbelt went over their legs twocats - I can see that would make a difference.
