i don't have a partner so will have my best friend from work and my mum hopefully, my best friend is really looking forward to it and we're hopeful that bubble arrives in the evening or the weekend as it may well be very difficult for my best friend to get out of work!

BowSurprise · 28/08/2016 21:31

Grey we are on the Herts/Essex border by Harlow/ware. Which side of Essex are you?

goinggrey1978 · 28/08/2016 22:02

LittleBear01 · 28/08/2016 23:15

becciandbump · 29/08/2016 08:38

becciandbump · 29/08/2016 08:39

I'm Shock that we're still getting new joiners to the December group (including another set of twins! DoubleTrouble41 ) The maternity units around the country are going to be rammed this December!

KitKat1985 · 29/08/2016 10:54

Hello all.

Glad to read that people have had some more reassuring scans recently.

I'm 27 weeks today, so nearly in the third trimester. Really get difficult to bend over now and have to lean back more when eating as I can't lean forward anymore. Lol!

Minispringroll · 29/08/2016 17:57

Have been sorting out clothes today and I hope we've got enough for the first few weeks. Hmm I'm not sure how much a baby needs...should be alright, though. Our closest supermarket is 3 miles but DH doesn't drive. (I'm sure they deliver...)

That might be a concern, though. How do you get to hospital when your DH doesn't drive? We don't have any family or friends living close by (I'm sure they'd come, but they all live about an hour away at least...) Can you take a taxi? From us to St Michael's, it costs about £30 in a taxi...but I don't know whether they take you when you are about to have a baby. Confused

December 2016 - Thread 5! 20 week scans and wriggly babies
Bigfam · 29/08/2016 18:07

Minispringroll I had to go in an ambulance when dd2 was born and looking back I really don't understand why I did, dh was at home with dd1 and ds and the hospital was only 10 minutes away from where we lived at the time, mil came to the birth and she met me at the hospital rather than bloody well picking me up! Hmm I've never even thought about that before... anyway, sorry (for blabbing on)! Do you have a neighbour you're friendly with? Failing that I'd guess taxi too, if it's your first baby you should have plenty of time to get there before anything happens Smile

Minispringroll · 29/08/2016 18:28

Bigfam I think ambulance might be a bit over the top. Grin Also,...would they take me to Weston, since it's closer?
We've got lovely neighbours but they both work and have a LO. Not sure I could really bother them with that. I might simply have to make DH do some driving lessons with me before December. Hmm He hasn't driven a car in about a decade and he's never driven my car, which is quite big. Bristol generally isn't great for driving...and I'm getting visions of him trying to navigate his way to the hospital on an icy, stormy December night...or during rush hour. Shock (Can I use this as a reason for getting an elective cs? Grin )

NotAClue82 · 29/08/2016 18:36

Hey DoubleTrouble! Congrats on the twins! I'm expecting twin girls too just a few weeks before you! How have you been feeling?

NotAClue82 · 29/08/2016 18:39

Also, does anyone know where I can get a stylish yet practical rucksack? Hoping to spend no more than £30 or so though I guess I might splash out for the perfect one!. By practical I mean it needs to be reasonably big (enough for clothes and cloth nappies for my twins).

With my older child I used one as a changebag and much preferred it. This time around with my twin pram I won't have too mich space to hang things off the pram so I think a rucksack will be more practical!

Bigfam · 29/08/2016 18:40

I nearly gave birth in the ambulance, when I called for one they told me there was a bit of a delay and said to tell my dh to have towels ready & I told them no way, I'm stood outside with my legs crossed keeping her in Grin

The thought of a c section terrifies me, I think it's because I don't think I'd actually allow myself to recover, I would push myself too far too fast. 😕

Lovewatchingrainfall · 29/08/2016 18:54

Mini Spring yes you can get a taxi to the hospital. Depending on where you are St Micheals has its own taxi service they use. The best thing is to speak to the company first. And explain they may just make you pay for any cleaning of the inside of the car.
Also regarding ambulance they have to take you to the nearest hospital so if Weston was closer they would take you there unless they have other reasons not to. Even though I am closer to Weston this baby has to be born in St Michael's so an ambulance would not be helpful. Like you my husbands family are over an hour away and DH works in Bristol so I just hope he is home when I go into labour.

Hope this helps.

KitKat1985 · 29/08/2016 18:59

Ahh yes. My biggest anxiety aside from the pain is trying to find someone to be with DD whilst me and DH go to the hospital. The only real likely candidate is my Mum and she's a 30-40 minute drive away... and doesn't drive. My current plan is to give her some cash in November and tell her to get an emergency taxi to come over when I go into labour, BUT my Dad is ill, so she may well be in hospital with him at any time (not the same hospital I need to be in!), which is at least an hours drive away. My first labour was just over 6 hours from first contraction to baby, and I've been warned by the midwife that as my last labour was quick (by first labour standards) this labour may only be 2-3 hours long based on the last one, so time is likely to be a critical factor! DH's family are over an hours drive away. We have no friends locally that could come over either. I'm getting quite stressed about the whole thing.

StubbleTurnips · 29/08/2016 19:09

DHs parents and one of the girls from DDs nursery will be on standby for labour here. I have tried to convince DH to stay home and I'll have a Doula but he's really not having it. Can't say I blame him.

Worth trying an emergency nanny agency too!

Minispringroll · 29/08/2016 19:32

Bigfam I was born by emergency cs and luckily my mum had got transferred to the bigger hospital in the area. Otherwise, I would have died. I'm not bothered about a "natural" birth. I just want baby and me to be safe and healthy.

Thanks Lovewatching. Might have to check with our taxi company. We live just outside Weston in the middle of nowhere, so getting to Bristol can take a little while. DH works in Weston but he cicles to work...so if anything happens during the day, it'll take him at least half an hour to make it back (unless one of his colleagues drives him back...).

Minispringroll · 29/08/2016 19:33

*cycles
Goodness...summer holidays have been too long, it seems.

Brisgirl · 29/08/2016 19:43

No idea re taxis or ambulance and if you were closer would have offered to help but excited as we are also at St.Michaels and we are due date twins minispringroll and you're only two days later lovewatchingrainfall . What are the odds we might be in hospital together? Fairly slim probably 😂 I've asked for an elcs and seeing consultant about it this week so we shall see!

barkingtreefrog · 29/08/2016 19:56

DH works closer to the hospital than we live, but if he's at work I'm not sure if I'd be able to drive myself to the hospital, I suppose he'd have to cycle home and then drive me in?! It's a right pain parking at the hospital though so ideally I'll go into labour in the evening or weekend when our neighbours are home, and one of them can drive us in! (I live next door to my best mate, I wouldn't usually ask this of a random neighbour!!)
Also, I'm very aware that my mum was in labour 36 hours with me, don't really want DH worrying about car parking during that time!!

Does anyone know how paternity leave works? If he leaves work to attend the birth, does that mean paternity leave has to kick in then, or can he return to work and take it when he wants it? (Eg if I and baby have to stay in hospital for a few days, it would be better for him to start paternity when we get home, or if baby comes just before the Xmas holidays it would be better for him to take paternity leave after the holidays).
Fingers crossed baby arrives overnight or at the weekend!!!

weechops · 29/08/2016 19:57

Wow so many of you are in/near London! Anyone in Glasgow Smile
With my due date being Christmas Eve, I'm slightly worried about childcare for my 3. Usually dh dad and partner have come over but I know they'll want to properly celebrate Christmas (I.e. Drink all the time) which is their prerogative but there's literally no one else we could possibly ask! I'd be fine going on my own but dh would be totally gutted to miss the birth.
Guess we'll play it by ear then!

Minispringroll · 29/08/2016 20:09

brisgirl We might end up together. Grin Last time I was at St Michael's for an operation, they kindly allowed me to go home at 10pm. (Had been there since 7.30am and my op under general anaesthetic at 5pm.) I generally do quite well with operations and recover quickly. I really am not fond of hospitals, though and the idea of staying on a ward completely freaks me out. Had to stay in Weston for a few days for emergency op and they actually put me in a single room on the private ward downstairs, which was very kind of them. Blush
Is there a reason why you are going for elcs? I'm supposed to have a consultant appointment at some point but the midwives I've spoken to so far all appear to assume that I'll have my baby in a pool. Confused That's DH's personal nightmare. Grin
