Thread five for the chattiest bunch of preggers ladies you've ever had the pleasure of encountering. We're greeting the second trimester with excitement and apprehension, and lots of questions, humour, reassurance, empathy and advice.

Fourth thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/2684139-february-2017-thread-4-are-we-the-chattiest-bunch-or-what

Hello everyone, just thought I'd add my tuppence for today...

Water births- I wanted one, had to fight for it as was 15 days overdue when I went up to labour ward (not my fault!) so classed as 'high risk'. They eventually agreed & gave me the water room, I was in the tub for about 30mins & they said 'actually can you get out as this could slow you down & we need the baby to come asap'? Long story after that but I didn't get to go back in the water!

Movement- I've been feeling it since around 14wks. Definitely baby not wind, if you want to check then try having an ice lolly/cold can of coke as that makes mine get very active.

Nappies- we did disposable as had no way of drying re-usables in our flat. We live in a house now but still think we'll stick with disposables as most of the day they're at nursery & nursery both provide & recycle their nappies. I can definitely recommend Cheeky Wipes though, much more effective at cleaning baby poo than disposables & you keep them wet in a tub anyway so don't have to worry about drying after washing.

gumbootsandjandals · 11/08/2016 19:08

Wonderlust I have now cloth bummed two kids, so feel free to ask lots of questions.

I found I didn't save money with the first, but that was because I bought more nappies than necessary. There are lots of lovely designs to choose from and I couldn't help treating myself my baby. You can definitely do it on the cheap, esp if you buy second hand. I have many second hand nappies in my collection and they've always arrived in brilliant condition (oh except two really rough cotton little lambs from eBay).

Am definitely saving on the second kid, esp as have been selling what doesn't work for us.

If you bf, cleaning is easy. Just store in bucket until you wash. Bf poo is water soluble. Now we are on solid-ish poos, I knock the poo into the loo, then store and wash as above. I wash every 2 days. I air dry, but most nappies can be tumbled.

I'd recommend you try before you buy through a nappy library. There are quite a few that hire by post.

MimiDiddy · 11/08/2016 19:44

Gumboots I'm interested in using reuseable nappies too, did you use cloth from birth? This is my first, we are planning to have two but it took over 2 years and several miscarriages to get to this stage so it's not a done deal there will be a sibling to spread the nappy cost over. I'm happy to buy 2nd hand but I'm not clear if it's worth getting cloth nappies for the first 2-3 months when they're quite small.

gumbootsandjandals · 11/08/2016 19:54

I used disposables for the first 5 days then on to cloth.

We used tiny terries, newborn prefolds, xs motherease sandies and various other small nappies. Apart from the terries they were all secondhand, however most were unused. I paid £1-2 for most of them.

I use a lot of birth-to-potty nappies but only Pop-ins fit when they were little (like, from 6 weeks). Most other btps didn't fit even my big son til 4 months.

Certainly wait til baby is a bit bigger if you want to avoid buying the small sizes. But remember, you can always sell on when you're finished. Esp if you buy second hand you can sometimes even make money!

Dreamingoutloud7 · 11/08/2016 20:13

Hadn't even considered what nappies we would use, every day it seems there's something new to plan or consider and I don't really have a clue about any of it Confused

Happy birthday sparkles Cake

Bumblebee33 · 11/08/2016 20:33

I like the idea of cloth nappies and did give them a go when my daughter was a few months old but my sleep deprived brain couldn't cope with figuring out all the poppers and variable sizing! We use Naty disposables as they are more eco friendly than the normal brands. Boots has them on offer quite regularly.

topmammy · 11/08/2016 20:40

Hi tillyann I've recently joined too Smile

Ubercorn · 11/08/2016 20:49

Hi tillyann.

Sickness has been vile today, I don't know if my tablets have stopped working or if it's because I'm tired or what. Have thrown up everything I've had and have once again stripped the lining off my tongue from being sick so much. Going to bed soon so I can sleep to escape it Sad

Dutchy88 · 11/08/2016 20:49

Wonderlust we've been in fulltime cloth since ds was 7 months, he's 11 months now, and I wish we'd found them sooner. Gumboots has given a lot of info above. It should be cheaper but my love of pretty patterns isn't making it so!! My favourite daytime nappies are pop-ins - we send them to nursery as they're easy for them to use - and Milovia wraps and inserts, with these if it's just wee you only need to change the insert not the whole nappy. For nighttime we use bamboozles with blueberry coveralls or peenut wraps.

With this child we will start from early on, probably just wait for the mecomium poos to be gone. We also use reuseable wipes a lot of the time, although not exclusively. We wash every other day.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 11/08/2016 21:19

I use disposable nappies. Just personal preference and for ease if I'm honest. I already do 6-7 loads of washing a week so would rather not add to it with nappies. X

Evergreen17 · 11/08/2016 21:45

Ahhh all this talk about nappies I cant keep up!
Can we pick this conversation up again in a few months please?!! I am not buying anything yet...

Evergreen17 · 11/08/2016 21:48

I told managers today SmileSmile things are getting real
Oh my the nerves
Also now stressed about birth choices

LondonGirl83 · 11/08/2016 22:04

Happy birthday sparkles!

I'm thinking of using Eco disposable nappies but honestly I haven't given it much thought. What are some the pros of cloth?

I've never heard of meconium poo so clearly have much to learn in the next 27 weeks!

Mysterycat23 · 11/08/2016 22:53

Happy birthday SBSparkles!!Cake

Mysterycat23 · 11/08/2016 23:31

Welcome Tillyann and topmammy :)

Interesting posts on reusable nappies.. so many questions flying around in my head! Not just about nappies .. The more I read about babies the more complicated it all seems (zero baby experience here).. GrinBlush

Holly1987 · 12/08/2016 07:23

Glad I'm not the only one feeling a little out of my depth ever and mysterycat there's so much to decide and I'm not sure when to start buying things

Shellbell0403 · 12/08/2016 08:23

Good luck holly 😊

I'm the same dreaming ever and mystery xx

MimiDiddy · 12/08/2016 08:33

Thanks for the cloth nappy info Gumboots. I'm still not convinced about the financial pay off of newborn cloth nappies vs Aldi or Lidl disposables, but I worked out that our little one could get through over a 1000 disposables one the first 3 months Shock, and my conscious just wont allow that. So am now scouring eBay for bargain bundles Grin

Evergreen17 · 12/08/2016 08:38

I know NOTHING about babies Sad

Evergreen17 · 12/08/2016 08:40

Mimi I am the same. I completely respect people's choices but I am an environmental professional so I have to think about this nappy choice very carefully and deal with the consequences Confused

SkyLucy · 12/08/2016 08:43

Good luck holly, welcome newbies! Nappy chat already? Dear god!! Confused
