Thread five for the chattiest bunch of preggers ladies you've ever had the pleasure of encountering. We're greeting the second trimester with excitement and apprehension, and lots of questions, humour, reassurance, empathy and advice.

Piano I've told my two bosses at work so they wouldn't query all my time off etc

I'm not dire how to tell others.m part of me after keeping it secret so long now doesn't want to!

I've told a few close friends earlier on and will tell others as I see them face to face now that the scan is done.

topmammy · 09/08/2016 09:32

Thanks Ubercorn Smile

Good luck for scans today! Got mine on the 15th.

I'm a teacher so not at work at the moment. I think I'll have a clear bump by the time I go back in September so I'll just let people figure it out for themselves I think, haha. I will probably email my headteacher though to give him the heads up sooner. I hope I'll have a bump anyway... at the moment I just look bloated Hmm

ScottyAl · 09/08/2016 09:34

2many I'm so sorry to read your news. Take care of yourself Flowers

It's lovely to read through the thread and see how everyone is doing. I too got my 20 week scan date at my 12 week scan (19th Sept).

I'm just back from my first major social even whilst being pregnant. It was a girly weekend away and was very strange. One "friend's" attitude towards me was, quite frankly, disgusting. I went home alone early one night in tears of rage and woke feeling like perhaps I was over reacting until other friends mentioned that she had been out of order. I don't see me continuing that friendship!

I'm quite anxious about telling work. I'm a teacher and we are back next week so I'll be telling work on Monday. I'm on a temp contract covering a maternity leave and the lady I'm covering isn't due back until March but I would finish at Xmas. Needless to say this was a bit of a surprise baby Blush

SBSparkles · 09/08/2016 09:40

Oh lots of fellow teachers on here! I'm definitely starting to look pregnant now at 15+3 and hoping for a nice big bump by the beginning of Sept! I'm covering maternity leave as well and there are currently two teachers off on maternity leave! The parents will wonder what we're all up to!
Scotty I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Is she jealous? Funny how big events in life, both good and bad, show us who our real friends are! Don't worry about telling school, they will have dealt with this kind of thing a million times before! Teachers tend to be mainly women ( in primary anyway) and are often of a child-rearing age so they must expect it!
Uber haha!!

kikisdelivery · 09/08/2016 09:45

Good luck with all the scans today ladies! Smile

Can I ask you guys a quick question - would you buy a second-hand travel system? Someone at my work is selling one - he's given me loads of info about it and sent a ton of pics, and it all looks good. I'd like to actually go and see it to make sure i'm comfortable with the size/height/handles etc.... but if all seems ok, is there any reason I should know about for why not to buy it? His asking price is very good, it looks to be Mothercare own brand (Oyster?) and his kids are now older hence the sale. I've just never done this before, so wondering if I should be looking out for particular flaws/issues, or if I should just go for it!

SpinALittleFaster · 09/08/2016 10:02

kiki I don't believe there's anything wrong with buying a second hand pram, but not a car seat. They can be damaged internally without any visible sign and really you can't know whether it has been in an accident unless you buy new.

ScottyAl · 09/08/2016 10:03

sparkles, it could be an amusing conversation really as when I started my HoD told me that the classroom I was in was "the most fertile in the school". Almost everyone who has had it has fallen pregnant!

I knew my friend would struggle with the news as she is having fertility problems but the rest of us went out of our way to make sure she didn't feel awkward. We didn't talk about it or mention anything vaguely pregnancy/baby related and we tried to make it a really good weekend. I'll obviously never understand how she feels but i was so disappointed that her way of dealing with it was to make me feel like I wasn't wanted at the weekend. Another of my friends who stayed out after I left told me she was taking cocaine all night too and I lost a bit of sympathy (perhaps wrongly) for her at that point. Perhaps it's just the hormones but it really upset me and I phone my poor DP at 1.30a.m in a snotty mess!

I can't believe how organised everyone is sounding. I haven't even considered buying anything yet. At least I won't need childcare as I'll be unemployed when baby arrives...every cloud Confused

kikisdelivery · 09/08/2016 10:26

Thanks spin, I'd heard the same thing about car seats which is why I'm a little cautious. I think we'll definitely ask if we can go and see everything. I feel slightly obliged if we do go to his house, because it feels like we're planning to buy and I don't like leading people on, but if there's anything we're not sure of I'd rather leave it and look elsewhere...I'm sure as a dad himself my colleague would understand!

Scotty, I am NEVER this organised in real life! I am literally only taking advantage of the advert on my work board; I wouldn't otherwise be even thinking of prams until at least the 20 week scan otherwise!!

SBSparkles · 09/08/2016 10:26

Ahhh Scotty well I'm in the same boat as you although technically employed by the agency. I don't think I'll go back to supply but it might fit in well with dh's days off. We'll see!
With regards to your friend, well I know how it feels to have fertility issues ( ttc over 2 years and ivf) but that doesn't excuse her making you feel you weren't welcome! I did used to find it hard when friends got pregnant but I either hid it or had a bit of a moan about 'ahhh I hope it's me one day' and was quite open about the fact that I was happy for them but hoping it would be me soon ( I do regret doing that but infertility does send you a bit mad) however, when I was ttc I was not drinking, smoking, only eating organic food, was amazingly healthy. If she's struggling I don't think coke is going to help!! Jeese!! I'd have a think about that friendship but obviously it's up to you and she might apologise?
The classroom was obviously lucky for you too!! Must be something in the water at that school!! (And mine!) x

SBSparkles · 09/08/2016 10:28

Ps. I'm not organised!! Not buying any baby stuff till 20 week scan. Have chosen a pram online but only cause I'm sitting around bored on the Internet a lot!!

Ubercorn · 09/08/2016 10:36

That's not on at all scotty. I agree with sparkles that infertility can send you loopy, we tried for three years and had two miscarriages along the way to where we are now, but that's no excuse for being awful towards a friend. My best friend and I were pregnancy test at the same time, I'd gotten pregnant naturally a few weeks before my appointment to start on Clomid. I lost mine, she didn't. It was hard but I made sure to never purposely make her feel bad, my struggles weren't her fault.

Shellbell0403 · 09/08/2016 10:38

Hey evergreen I am the exact same, still don't quite believe it, although been feeling mega rough last few days and as if I have the BIGGEST hangover in history! I was going to attempt to go back to work tomorrow but don't know if I will manage.
My 16 week scan is 29th Aug but may need to change it 🙈

Scotty that's terrible that your friend was acting like that!! There's no need. I had fertility issues but was over the moon when my friend found out she was pregnant! Can't believe she was nasty to you!

Good luck with the scans today!

Is anyone else still getting up lots of time for the toilet?

Shellbell0403 · 09/08/2016 10:44

Ps bought my first baby thing yesterday... a wee comforter thing, chickened out of baby grows etc!

topmammy · 09/08/2016 10:44

Talking of being organised, if anyone wants to start thinking about winter maternity clothes thanks to a tip off from a friend I've ordered this 3 in 1 maternity coat - 70% off Grin m.vertbaudet.co.uk/3-in-1-maternity-parka.htm?ProductId=001000009

My first baby was a summer born so pretty much all of my maternity clothes I've kept are dresses! What a shame, I'll have to go shopping... Wink

Ubercorn · 09/08/2016 11:05

Oh my goodness, yes shell. If I wake up in the night, I need to pee. DS2 is getting his molars so really unsettled, tossing and turning all over the bed and waking me up. Every time he wakes me I need to go to the loo.

I'm sure it's nature's way of prepping us for night feeds!

ScottyAl · 09/08/2016 11:08

Thanks ladies, I'm glad to hear it wasn't just me being hormonal! I think I'll just see what happens from here.

My mum took to me Mothercare last week (she's excited!) to look at prams. I had no idea! It's such a minefield! I thought I was relatively intelligent but, jeezo, my mind was blown. I was pleasantly surprised by the price of those on special offer though. We're inheriting a lot from my SIL so hopefully won't have to buy too much on top. I do want to buy a new pram and I know we need a new car seat. DP wants to get a puppy for baby to grow up with. Erm...and when you're at work and I'm at home with a newborn, two mental adult dogs and a puppy?!

shell Just this week I've started needing the loo a lot. Perfect timing when I'm back to work next week Shock

twocatsandatoddler · 09/08/2016 11:26

kikis the only thing about a second hand travel system is if you have a carry cot and especially if you plan to use it for overnight sleeping, it's recommended that you get a new mattress. Same goes for re-using Moses baskets. I think the reason is that babies are sick a lot so the foam can harbour bacteria from previous milk vomit.

That said, I can't remember DS being sick in the carry cot as he almost never threw up, so I probably won't get a new mattress as it had a cover and a mattress protector which I'll clean thoroughly. But if I was using a second hand one without knowing the history I would. I think you can get ones to fit quite easily online and for not much money if you google it. I'll probably get a new Moses basket mattress though (I think they're about £8).

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 09/08/2016 12:05

I've already bought my travel system Blush in my defence I'm using the seat unit part now for my youngest. The carrycot and carseat are stored away upstairs and won't come out until baby is here. I'm really organised with most things though. I'm getting the cot around 30 weeks and I will more than likely make it and remake it about 10 times haha. Buying things like baby clothes and nappies as and when so they slowly build up. Not getting much in the way of clothes as we ate having g a surprise x

prettypinklady · 09/08/2016 12:34

Hi Ladies, hope you are all well!

I went for my 12 week scan but due to having a late first appointment, I was 13+4 when I had it done. The sonographer told me she was sure that baby was a girl. She seemed very experienced, and even told me if she was wrong she would go out and buy me all boy clothes to replace my girl clothes. She was that sure! However I am still a bit unsure and don't know if to just wait until my 20 week scan.

What do you all think? Has anyone else been told this early on?

Sunshineface123 · 09/08/2016 12:34

Teacher here too! When ru guys thinking you'll finish? Our due date in 15th Feb! X

ScottyAl · 09/08/2016 12:59

Sunshine, I'll be finishing after the Christmas break so my first day of leave will be 9th Jan. My due date is 3rd Feb though. It just doesn't make sense to me to go back for a week or two when they could have someone else start the new term afresh. one term to go...eek!

SBSparkles · 09/08/2016 13:16

Shell I'm still peeing all night it's mega annoying!! Thought that was supposed to go by now!?
Sunshine I'm due 28th Jan so Christmas will be a natural end point for me! I think that's how long the maternity cover position lasts for anyway! Smile

Shellbell0403 · 09/08/2016 13:31

sparkles yeh I read that too! Haha. I'm still feeling mega nauseas and sick also! Thought that would subside too! I actually feel like crying (feeling very emotional)

Dreamingoutloud7 · 09/08/2016 13:38

Back frommy 12 week scan, baby is measuring spot on at 11+5
Although scan lady was quite rude, I can't quite explain it and thought I was being paranoid but dh was gobsmacked when we came out as he had thought she was so rude. On our notes she's put that it was a technically difficult scan Hmm but didn't explain that in the room!
Then when I went to have blood taken they couldn't find a vein, two nurses later still no luck at this point I was getting a bit teary as I have a strong phobia about blood tests and one said I needed to toughen up as it doesn't get any easier. Thanks for that!
They've referred me to the blood clinic tomorrow at 9am so they can try.
I've since spent half an hour at home hysterically crying because it was just such a wierd experience. Stupid me thought maternity wards might be welcoming and the staff might maybe crack a smile, guess not.
Thank god that's not the hospital I'm giving birth in, I'd be demanding a transfer otherwise!

SBSparkles · 09/08/2016 13:43

Shell seems a lot of things you read aren't necessarily true! Ahhh don't cry! I was awful yesterday but a good nights sleep has sorted me out! Yesterday I just gave up, ate chocolate and watched comedy! Helped a lot! X
