Crazy that we are onto thread 4 already!

Just starting the 12-week scans, but still feet firmly in the anxiety-ridden first trimester, yikes!

Congrats on the scans, but sorry to those who are waiting patiently for happy news.

I had my scan today too and found out I'm 13 weeks today, a few days ahead of where I thought. The Medical centre was so good at Kings, lovely people and amazing facilities, felt in good hands. LO was a squirmer too, but got all measurements and good NT results so very happy!

Spent afternoon in mothercare with DH "buying a pressie for a new mummy friend" (browsing all the travel systems) couldn't stop welling up at every baby pic!

Still have MS though and no appetite and shattered, where's the second semester flurry of energy?!

Jojoclaire · 26/07/2016 19:45

And here's another scan pic - "the raspberry" shying away from us in the 4d scan (We've kept the name DH gave it when we saw it for the first time, apparently raspberry sized)

GinandJazzHands · 26/07/2016 20:10

Fantastic news on the scans ladies - some great pics! Thinking of all those waiting xx

LondonGirl83 · 26/07/2016 20:11

Okay ladies, I've been on an emotional roller coaster today. Met with my potential consultant and he gave me a quick scan even though I am 10+3 today.

The baby is alive and measuring to date but right now appears to have a hernia. The doctor said it might simply be a delay in closing up that will resolve itself in the next couple of weeks (most likely outcome) but if it doesn't by my 12 week scan its a very serious defect and could be indicative of other defects and chrome disorders-- I had to push to get this information as initially he just warned me against telling my family when I go to the reunion at the end of this week before the 12 week scan.

The hernia shouldn't be there at this stage but its also not yet unlikely that it will resolve itself. I broke down in tears. Apparently only 50% of babies with it survive to term, 30-40% of the time they have other defects and 10-15% of the time they have chromosomal disorders.

Even when we get the Panorama results we won't be fully out of the woods. He moved forward my 12 week scan to August 8th so I wouldn't have to wait as long to see if its resolved itself, which was super kind. Until then I am basically in limbo / hell.

Dreamingoutloud7 · 26/07/2016 20:33

Ah button my birth hospital is Stoke Mandeville! Although I'm being sent to High Wycombe for all my scans.

Dreamingoutloud7 · 26/07/2016 20:36

Oh london limbo is not a nice place to be. I'm sending nothing but good thoughts that it will sort itself out and have a happy outcome Flowers

SpinALittleFaster · 26/07/2016 20:46

evergreen there were two reports last week of potentially non travel related zika in Florida. That's enough to make it not worth the risk for me :(

SkyLucy · 26/07/2016 20:46

Oh London I'm sorry you've got a frightening, uncertain period ahead. Hope you've got some support to get you to the next bit - 8 August isn't that far away, but I know it will drag for you. I've got everything crossed for good news Flowers

SkyLucy · 26/07/2016 20:49

Dreaming - I was offered Stoke Mandeville as well as Watford and Luton & Dunstable...if all goes well, I might see if I can have a look around them. Nice to have a choice! Have you used SM before?

SpinALittleFaster · 26/07/2016 20:50

Sorry London just refreshed. I really hope the hernia resolves itself before your next scan.

FriendlyGhost · 26/07/2016 20:51

That's really tough London. I'm sorry you're going through this. Fingers crossed it's a positive outcome for you. I do wonder how many aren't picked up at this stage and are never known about because most people don't have a scan until 12 weeks. So many things do resolve themselves so focus on that. When do you get your panorama results? Hopefully they'll give you a degree of comfort while you wait.

Dreamingoutloud7 · 26/07/2016 20:55

sky I was offered SM and John Radcliffe in Oxford, SM is much more direct for me.
Haven't used them for maternity before but used the a&e when my mum broke her elbow and they were absolutely amazing. I know it's a different department but to me it's still a good sign.

Shellbell0403 · 26/07/2016 21:26

London i hope jellybean is all better by your next scan! Sending hugs and will keep my fingers and toes crossed.

Congrats on the fab scans ladies!!

Can I ask another question... when people say it feels like stretching is it like wee crampy feelings and kind of an ache?
Iv had achy feelings quite abit this afternoon/evening and feel uncomfortable

radderss · 26/07/2016 21:29

Sorry to hear London. Really hope it's good news for you on 8th August but horrible being in limbo. I've never heard of that before to be honest.

Just reading all these posts with different things going on at scans is so eye opening

Sending lots of hugs to those who are still waiting further. Cinderella hope tomorrow goes ok. And to those who haven't had the greatest news at scans

Congratulations to all those who have had their perfect scans x

Evergreen17 · 26/07/2016 22:00

Spin I hadn't heard those news, thanks for the info.

LondonGirl83 · 26/07/2016 22:09

The hernia is quite small and limited to the bellybutton with no other structural defects and he has checked the nuchal fold etc as well. The doctor did say it was unlikely to be a problem and he expects it to resolve itself. And yes, it is a risk of getting scanned too early!

Still knowing that there is an elevated chance of such a potentially serious complication just completely... drains you of joy.

Panorama results are probably this week but maybe as late as Monday.

LuckyinOctober · 26/07/2016 22:29

I got my blood results in the post following my scan today which confirms we have a low risk of chromosome problems (1:96738).

Sorry you're in limbo after the early scan London, hopefully it does resolve on it's own. Taking the stats you quoted above, that means there's a 50% chance the baby would make it to term even with the hernia (which may go away), 60-70% of the time even if the baby did have the hernia to term they wouldn't have any other problems, and 85-90% of the time they're chromosomally normal. The odds for a healthy baby still sound definitely in your favour - Fingers crossed Flowers

twocatsandatoddler · 26/07/2016 22:32

london so sorry to hear that. Really hope it turns out to be fine - sometimes things sound scarier than they are and it sounds like there's a good chance it'll resolve itself, but it must be so worrying.

twocatsandatoddler · 26/07/2016 22:33

Also, not sure if this is the same thing as it didn't show up on scans so not sure what stage it developed, but DS was born with a slight umbilical hernia and it resolved itself within about 6 months.

LondonGirl83 · 26/07/2016 23:47

Two cats it can be related. A simple umbilical hernia isn't a big deal. However, at this stage an umbilical hernia can also look like a much more serious omphalocele.

I've been reading up (of course) and between 8-10 weeks all babies apparently have an umbilical hernia. However, this typically resolves itself between 10 and 12 weeks gestation. I am 10+3 and its a very small hernia. Its likely this is just a developmental process and that's what the consultant put in my notes.

I told him just before the exam that I wanted to tell my family this weekend (at our huge reunion in Canada) that I am pregnant if I had low risk Panorama results. He just wanted to put me off doing that because in the off chance the hernia doesn't resolve itself, it is a marker of a much increased risk for other structural birth defects and mortality. However, my nuchal translucency looked normal which lowers that risk as well.

Given how serious the downside is, he just felt he had to suggest I not tell everyone I'm pregnant and that of course set off alarm bells and I forced him to tell me the full story of what might be wrong...

Early scans can backfire ladies, I'm a cautionary tale.

SBSparkles · 27/07/2016 06:42

Shell I've had quite painful stretching that made me sit down as it hurt to walk. I was worried but called midwife and early pregnancy unit and they said it's totally normal. I think around 10-12 weeks there's a growth spurt and so the body has to stretch really quickly!

SBSparkles · 27/07/2016 06:44

To actually answer your question though it's been both - sharp pulling pains, dull ache, feeling like my uterus is sore, tiny extricate shock feelings. A nice warmish bath takes them off x

ScottishSnowflake · 27/07/2016 07:16

Morning all.

London, am so sorry to hear the worry you're going through. Fingers crossed all goes well for you at your next scan Flowers

Hello to all the new joiners and congratulations Smile

Has anyone joined/ used Emma's Diary before (seems to be in conjunction with Argos)? Seems to be a lot of free bits but I'm always cautious before joining something. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts!

Roll on 2 August when hopefully I can add to the good news on this thread.

twocatsandatoddler · 27/07/2016 07:16

london sounds like he was just being pragmatic but not what you want to hear. Just because something might be wrong doesn't mean the most likely outcome isn't still that everything's fine. The uncertainty and waiting for another few weeks must be horrible though.

I found out as a result of my combined test bloods that I have low PAPP-A which could be an indication of problems with the placenta - so could lead to poor inter-uterine growth, placental accretion, pre-eclampsia and in the worst scenarios, still-birth. I have a detailed scan at 23 weeks to check the blood flow to and from the baby. I'm trying to reassure myself that just because the result can be an indicator of problems doesn't mean there's anything wrong. I actually found Google really helpful as the midwife gave me the worst case scenarios and made it sound more worrying than it was, whereas Google brought up a load of threads with people saying they had the same issue and everything was fine. I also found some scientific papers which explained the correlation more clearly.

Sounds like you've already done the same and read everything, and have a good idea of the risks, so just have to pray it's what the consultant think it is and that it will be fine by your next scan.

LondonGirl83 · 27/07/2016 07:55

Twocats to be fair, the doctor said it was unlikely anything was wrong multiple times!

The problem is that to a hormonal pregnant woman anything besides, congratulations you have the most wonderful foetus in the world sounds like a disaster.

In the morning after a good nights sleep I realise there is really nothing to be worried about. All babies initially have umbilical hernias and while most babies' hernias are resolved by 10 weeks, at 11 weeks up to 20% of babies still have one which is why its not seen as problem unless its still there at 12 weeks. I am 10+3. So developmentally bean's hernia is being a little slower than normal to resolve itself, but its very likely to be fine.

I feel much better this morning about the whole thing. Was in a bit of a state when I wrote my first post.
