KitKat1985 · 06/07/2016 19:35

Hi all.

I have my 20 week scan next week. I really hope baby lets us know what sex it is at the scan and doesn't cross it's legs as I'm desperate to know now (and being asked about 10 times a day at work if I know what I'm having yet isn't helping)!

Still very undecided on whether to get a double buggy / travel system or whether to try and economise and make do with our single travel system and get DD to walk more / use a baby carrier for baby if DD needs to go in the buggy for a bit.

Re: Mat leave I don't intend to start until 39 weeks but am planning to take 2-3 weeks leftover annual leave before that so should leave at about 36 weeks in reality. Last time I really flagged from 34 weeks onwards but I'm trying to delay starting my leave to as late as possible so as to get more time off with the baby. My job (inpatient mental health nurse) is quite stressful and involves being on my feet for long periods of time though. I finally got my workplace risk assessment done this week (I told them I was pregnant when I was 4 weeks because it's a high-risk workplace [due to high levels of aggression on the ward] and it's taken them until I'm 19 weeks pregnant to fill the bloody form in! Hmm ) Unsurprisingly the assessment has come back that I'm at high risk. I've been told I have to do more meetings / paperwork based stuff which is easier said than done in a short-staffed ward, especially since I'm often nurse-in-charge and I can see colleagues getting assaulted etc. It's not very easy to just go 'sorry can't help' and walk away, although I'm very, very lucky that my work colleagues have all been very understanding to date. Does anyone else do a high-risk job? If so how is your workplace managing it?

weechops · 06/07/2016 19:49

oriana the liquid is definitely better than the pills. Awful constipation on those, even with daily Lactulose. I'll prob end up needing iron too, i usually end up anemic later on.

I have my consultant app in the morning. Hoping she discharges me back to the midwives since my last birth was fine.

oddsockfairy · 06/07/2016 19:59

Is anyone else absolutely starving?? Scan next weds on DDs 2nd birthday and am rubbish with suspense so finding out sex. Oh yes and then moving house on Thurs - thank god it's not in the 1st/3rd trimester!! Hope everyone is well Smile

Bigfam · 06/07/2016 20:05

oddsockfairy yes!! I've been thinking about bugles (crisps) for hours!!! They were around when I was a kid and they're back again. I really need some.... BBQ flavour

Londonmamabychance · 06/07/2016 20:18

Hannacarp, if this is your first, don't worry! With my DD I didn't have a bump until 5 months! And even then, it was small. All through my pregnancy I was so worried about by bump being small compared to dates, but DD arrived with a weight and length smack bang in the middle of the weight and height curve, and all was well. Some women are just build like that.

Now with my second, I'm inly 17 weeks but have quite a big bump and can't hide my pregnancy at all, and ironically, that's now annoying me! No please us preggos, eh! ; )

Londonmamabychance · 06/07/2016 20:18

*pleasing

sueevone · 06/07/2016 20:20

Had a private gender scan as I have no patience... I'm joining team Blue Smile. I was so happy to see him jumping all over the place. Can't contain my excitement!

Lovewatchingrainfall · 06/07/2016 20:36

Can not believe how big the list it. A Crazy Christmas ahead for us all. Have my 16week check up next week when I will actually be 18 weeks. Then 3weeks time for my scan, I so want to find out but my partner doesn't. I did wonder if they would slip the answer into my notes, but as its a consultant scanning not sure they would.
I'm so hungry I really want tropical skittles but can't find any anywhere.

Trying to watch Murray play tennis but I keep crying when he loses his point.

SpaceDinosaur · 06/07/2016 21:00

Hi everyone!!!

I've been away being a bit crazy!!! Grin

I hope that you're all progressing well. I have finally had to buy "fat people clothes" and WHERE HAVE THESE JEANS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!! Getting me out of maternity jeans is NEVER going to happen. EVER! GrinGrinGrin

To those of you lovelies who have bought Dopplers.
I'm sharing this because every single one of my midwife friends is resolute about this. Personal choice, yes of course but please, count movements and do not rely on your ability to interpret your Doppler.
It was described to me as someone doing electrics without training. Obviously enjoy using your Doppler but don't use it to reassure yourself.

December 2016 babies - thread #4 - blooming in trimester 2!
Bigfam · 06/07/2016 21:06

Hi space, I thought exactly the same thing about 2 pairs of maternity jeans I got from new look, they seem to be made of special super soft material.

I've not used my Doppler for a few days now, but re the kick counting, when should we start keeping track? I thought it was around 24 weeks. I do get some pretty reliable movements at night when laying with dd3 whilst she's falling asleep, so I find that reassuring.

becciandbump · 06/07/2016 21:06

At how many weeks should you count kicks. Baby kicks at times at the moment but only feel it a few times a day is it too early?

becciandbump · 06/07/2016 21:12

kitkat I wouldn't say my job was high risk but it's heavy work (rehab physio) I feel a bit guilty as due to my hernia during this pregnancy ive been told I can't lift which means I can only see half the patients on my ward and someone else has to come up daily to cover the rest. I have had one incident where a patient with severe dementia tried to hit me and just missed my bump luckily I was guarded and stepped back quickly.

SpaceDinosaur · 06/07/2016 21:18

I don't know about you girls but my baby feels like little internal "fart bubbles" but in the wrong place at the moment!!! No way counting those is every going to happen. Wink

The "count the kicks"/movements is definitely for later in our pregnancies. I'm going to chat with my MW at my 18 week appt and then at the 20 week scan to get a better idea.

I think the advice about the Dopplers is for a little later... When movements feel like defined movements rather than bubbles?

If baby has a "quiet day" don't check with your Doppler, call your midwife/maternity unit. Don't rely on your ability to hear a heartbeat if baby's had a "different" day or if something doesn't feel "right" or as it has been feeling "off"

The wonderful thing with 99% of midwifes is they would rather you told them so that can check you and baby properly than you worry.

I am not a midwife. I have 6 midwives in my life and 2 of my close friends are providing my care. I am insanely fortunate but it does mean I am getting my advice "straight" from them... No diplomatic phrasing or sugar coating!!! Wink

TipBoov · 06/07/2016 21:21

Dippers are useful for the stage where you can't feel movements, but once you're counting kicks they can provide false reassurance.

I feel huge today - my belly button has gone really shallow!

stripeyorangesocks71 · 06/07/2016 21:25

Yay I'm on the list, that does make me a happy bean :)

I've been looking at my 12w scan pictures today (was actually 14w1d) and realising I have no patience whatsoever and want to see baby again sooner than my 20w scan, I'm sure lots of us are feeling the same! Also cannot wait to find out if it's a boy or girl.. I think then the shopping will really start lol.

Asked other half about having a growth scan (private) at around 30 weeks and he seems ok with it so that excites me somewhat!

barkingtreefrog · 06/07/2016 21:53

I am loving my doppler as it is helping me keep sane until my 20w scan and I can't afford a private scan every week. My midwife was quite happy with me using it. I just don't get this false reassurance though. Once the baby started kicking if I felt reduced movement I'd be down at the hospital begging to be seen, I wouldn't be reaching for the doppler?! Perhaps that's just due to my history though, and being continually scared of losing her anyway.
I am absolutely desperate to start feeling kicks but nothing so far. I've been told not to expect to until after 20 weeks at least. 3 weeks to go....
Knackered all day today. Struggled to stay awake at my desk, had a 30 minute nap at lunchtime and a 2 hour nap when I got home!! In bed now. Hoping for more energy tomorrow!

Bigfam · 06/07/2016 22:21

Grin at dippers TipBoov

TipBoov · 06/07/2016 22:39

Not sure why it autocorrected Doppler to dippers!!

Azure83 · 06/07/2016 23:07

dinosaur yes, fart bubbles!!! That's all I'm feeling at the moment and I'm 18+2. I've not felt anything that I'm 100% convinced was the baby.

Bigfam · 07/07/2016 06:37

I'm 17+5 today, can feel her all the way up near my belly button (couple of cm below) it feels so weird!

peanutbutter2409 · 07/07/2016 07:56

I'm very jealous of anyone feeling movement already! I'm 18+5 but have an anterior placenta so have been warned it may be up to 25 weeks before I feel movement. Just can't wait to feel him!

SolomanDaisy · 07/07/2016 08:44

peanutbutter, I had an anterior placenta with my last pregnancy and felt movement at 20 weeks, so you may not have too long to go!

I'm pretty sure that you don't count the kicks until 28 weeks +, by which time most people have stopped using the Doppler as they feel movement so regularly.

Livvy79 · 07/07/2016 08:51

I'm a bit new here...can I join in?! SmileI'm 17+3. X
