Here's the new thread, for bumps and babies before we all graduate together!

I used the stretchy sling this morning then more structured one this afternoon, babyice is asleep as soon as he's put in them, literally within a minute. Naps in the fresh air today as we went out and about with toddle-ice on his balance bike then we walked to the beach and found little crabs under the stones in rock pools. It was lovely. We walked past a field of geese on the local farm and toddle-ice says "geese go honk...just like a fire engine!" Toddlers are brilliant!

Baby ice is nearly ten weeks old, I'll soon need to stop counting in weeks and go with months instead. His little stories are so sweet.

Aaaaargh family visiting today and although I love them and it's cute that they're so besotted with DD, they don't half wind her up!! She was all smiles when they walked in, then half an hour of being passed around like a doll and she starts crying, so they start dangling toys in front of her face as she gets more and more worked up.

Felt like a right meanie taking her into a darkened room for some white noise. But it's me who has to deal with the meltdown if I don't catch it in time.

Will be looking out for a thread in AIBU tonight, "daughter says I can't get her baby overexcited on the hottest day of the year and then go home and leave her to deal with the screaming fit who is being unreasonable"?

frozensmoothie · 18/07/2016 17:45

I've not been able to get DD to nap all day! Aaargh! And she had her jabs earlier so she's now super grumpy! I thought the jabs, calpol and hot weather would make her sleepy but no.

We had the health visitor over earlier and her weight gain is still slow and she slipping down the chart. They're not concerned yet but will take her to get weighed again in 2 weeks. She's still not feeding that frequently and often the only way I can get her to feed is lying down with a terrible latch. We've got the lady who cut her tongue tie who is also an IBCLC coming on Thursday so hopefully she'll be able to help. Also going to try out different bottles, I've heard the Nuk ones are good. Aaargh so stressful!

29redshoes · 18/07/2016 19:42

frozen I feel you on the nap issues. I managed to get two decent naps out of her but then it all went wrong in the afternoon. I'm so fed up of it now, she is SUCH a sleep fighter and I literally spend 90% of my time trying to get her to nap.

I have ordered a ring sling but I think even that would have been too hot today. I've scoured mumsnet for tips but I feel like I've tried them all now and some of the advice seems to be aimed at more textbook babies than DD (e.g. wait until she is drowsy. Ha!! DD is never knowingly drowsy). I can't even successfully rock her to sleep most of the time.

And then I think I should just chill out a bit and stop trying so hard. But if she doesn't nap, she gets overtired and screams! Which is no fun either!

What is it that makes them this way? I thought babies liked to sleep. Have you tried cranial osteopathy yet? I'm going to give it a go I think.

29redshoes · 18/07/2016 19:45

Ooops that was quite a rant, sorry. I'm never in a very good mood in hot weather!

Hoped your feeding issues get better frozen! Are you aiming to switch to expressed once your DD can take a bottle, or formula?

frozensmoothie · 18/07/2016 21:56

It's a nightmare 29 I took her for a walk in the pram earlier to try and get her to sleep. She was wide awake the whole way and only fell asleep 15 minutes before we got home. As soon as we got home and the pram stopped moving she was wide awake again and wide again now! I don't know where she gets the energy from. I think she's only slept for about 2 hours today in broken sections. I still can't decide what sling to get. She's not a fan of being held or cuddled for too long so I don't want to spend money on something she hates. I really need to get to the sling library!

I hope to do combined feeding when she will hopefully take a bottle. I don't get much from expressing so wouldn't be able to feed her solely on expressed milk. Have you switched to formula fully now?

29redshoes · 18/07/2016 22:20

Hmmm it sounds like our babies are quite similar! Mine isn't that cuddly either. The pram used to be a sure fire hit for naps but not anymore, DD is entertained by anything and everything including the inside of the black pram hood Confused. So a two hour walk resulted in a nap of just 30 minutes.

Is your DD quite "alert" a lot of the time? Mine is, and fully of lovely smiles, so it's not all bad. She just seems to get so overstimulated so quickly and easily. I'm keeping everything crossed its just a phase, she's still tiny!

Yes we are fully on formula now and it's gone pretty well although it was tough to start with. DD wouldn't take much at a time so we had lots of half emptied bottles! It's got a bit better now, she is happy to take a bit more at each feed (although she often likes to feed for 10 minutes, then play for a bit, then feed a bit more...). I do miss the good breastfeeding moments, bottle feeding is not quite the same as you don't get that closeness, but overall I'm much less stressed. Well, except about naps. I'm still stressed about naps!

If you are going to use formula I highly recommend a perfect prep machine. Probably not worth it if you're only giving a bottle or so a day, but I'd say totally worth it if you'll be giving more than that.

frozensmoothie · 19/07/2016 10:47

Yes DD is very alert a lot of the time and is also full of lovely smiles which does make it easier. She's currently asleep so I'm hoping for a sleepy day after yesterday's constantly awake day!

I've looked into cranial osteopathy and found someone local but haven't booked anything yet. Not helped by overhearing one of the health visitors at the weighing clinic telling one of the other mums that it's not recognised by the NHS and not scientifically proven. Money is tight on maternity leave so I don't want to waste it, but if it does help it would be amazing!

I've been fantasising about getting a perfect prep machine andbeing able to do bottle feeds. Going to buy Nuk bottles and see if she's any more receptive to them.

ChipsCheeseandIrnBru · 19/07/2016 15:56

Icecappedpinetrees here!

New name, same baby! He's asleep in the sling, cooking nicely next to my sweaty body on the hottest day of the year! Should be totally overheated soon! But they need their sleep, right?? I didn't even try the pram today.

I'm glad to hear feeding us settling down a bit for folk. It takes a while to find what suits us and them, they have their own agendas!

cantbelieveImquittingcoffee · 26/07/2016 10:19

just checking in, i managed to lose the thread!
hope everyone is doing well, and babies are coping better in the heat now they have had more chance to get used to it? DD is pretty calm at the moment and sleeping quite well but then I got an email alert from the wonder weeks that I signed up for warning me that she's just about to hit her next leap (12 weeks) so i need to read up on that!
I got a few books from the library this week to read her at bedtime to start trying to make a little routine, I read to her last night for the first time and she really seemed to pay attention and calm down, it was lovely! so we are planning on doing it every night now.
I also got a book called "teach your child" by Miriam Stoppard, it is from 2001 so quite dated but goes through development stages in a really lovely clear way that tells you how you can help your child to be stimulated at the right level for them at every age - not to make a genius, just to stop them getting frustrated and to reassure you as a parent a bit I think. I'm wondering if the advice will be out of date now because it's available to buy v cheaply on amazon 2nd hand and I'm thinking of buying it to put on the shelf with all the other baby books I haven't opened
Has anyone else come across it?

Not heard of it, I'm intrigued though! Love books like that. I still haven't dug out my wonder weeks book yet. Poor baby just gets carted around after his brother Smile

frozensmoothie · 26/07/2016 22:44

Not heard of it either but also intrigued!

Oh lordy DD is in the middle of leap 3 on wonder weeks. She's only 10 weeks but 12 weeks and 2 days corrected due to being overdue. It has been a nightmare. She's been crying so much more than normal. We've just had a massive overtired meltdown screaming fit, the likes of which we've not seen since she was a tiny newborn. I feel like we've gone all the way back to the beginning and I thought things were meant to get easier as we headed towards 12 weeks!
