I'm with you eastend really tired today. Sat at my desk struggling to motivate myself to do some work - brain keeps turning off! And I can't have chocolate :(

booked83 · 08/04/2016 14:49

I was just going to ask about when to pack a baby bag lol I'm 31 weeks on Monday!
Lol and leg cramps trust me banana few hours before bed is a god send I have hardly any now!
I'm going in for a c section (2 previous difficult labours!) so would my bag be any different?

iamdivergent · 08/04/2016 14:59

Although I'm aiming for a bone birth I bought some mini toiletries today for my 'hospital' bag just in case - got all this lot for £8.18! Add to this a couple packs disposable pants for the first few days and probably 30 odd maternity pads then it's just clothing to sort out (and baby's bits and pieces).

Something no one mentioned to me was that it's rare baby will be bathed in hospital, I'd taken and lot of baby toiletries with dd1 and the mw said that they don't bathe them as the vernix acts like a moisturiser so it's better not to straight away.

Iamdivergent I remember doing the bath at home with my son (he's 5 now!!)

iamdivergent · 08/04/2016 15:14

Nothing quite so scary booked they're like slippery eels Grin

ILovePies · 08/04/2016 15:38

Booked massive knickers to go over your wound! Absolute godsend!
You will still need pads as you will oddly still bleed.
Your shower stuff as you will be encouraged to go for a shower the day after or even same day if you are booked for the morning :)

mrsmugoo · 08/04/2016 15:55

Oh yes, primark full briefs I think they're called? -comfiest (but unsexiest) pants ever!! They were the best for after a section. I think I carried on wearing them for about a year Grin

ILovePies · 08/04/2016 16:15

My DD will be 2 in June and I'm still wearing mine... no shame Grin

Interesting discussion about GBS, ds2 was born just after 24hours after waters broke so they checked him for GBS, it was only a few days after taking him home that we got a phone call saying he was positive for it, scared the life out of me but they said if he was feeding well, no temp and appeared well then we didn't need to do anything. We were very lucky, but it left me watching him like a hawk for a long time. According to NICE guidelines I'll need the antibiotics during labour as this baby is ten times more likely to also have GBS. Will still push for an active birth, with mobile monitoring hopefully (ds1 emergency section).

Also agree bulk buying napies could be risky as different brands suit different babies.

C section bag packing, defo huge pants! Generally clothes that won't dig in to the scar. And I also found using a pillow/cushion across my tummy as protection from seat belt in the car really helpful too.

booked83 · 08/04/2016 16:50

I'm off to tesco later for last of my bits and big knickers r top of my list! Thanks everyone!

JellyBaby26 · 08/04/2016 17:24

Sections and pp bleeding. ..is it the same amount or less? Imagine a lot gets sucked out!!

booked83 · 08/04/2016 17:35

I can't remember my son was emergency c section and I think it was less than I thought it would be...

MollieRos · 08/04/2016 17:36

I'm off to Asda this weekend to try and get a few bits for my hospital bag too. Big knickers top of the list Grin

And welcome booked I missed your post before!

I spoke to the midwife today and have an appointment to go through my birth options on Tuesday. We had a brief chat about monitoring with GBS and she said it will be possible to have an active labour with mobile monitoring. I wonder if I'll have the option of a waterbirth too? Seems the main issue with that is keeping the cannula site dry, so as long as I can do that it should be ok.

ILovePies · 08/04/2016 17:44

Pp bleeding was more than I thought it would be. Stopped bleeding 2 weeks after natural labour with DS and bled 6 weeks after emcs with DD. Was lighter but went on for longer.

laughingGnomette · 08/04/2016 18:06

I bled a lot after my EMCS, the first time I got off the bed there was a gush of blood that landed on the floor! I continued bleeding for about 5-6 weeks.

GrubbyWindows · 08/04/2016 18:15

mollie sadly the monitors can't go in the water (unless the wireless ones can??).i really wanted a water birth, but couldn't because of the blessed monitors. And I even ended up in the only room with a pool!!! Felt very guilty stopping anyone else having one either that night!

MollieRos · 08/04/2016 18:29

Grubby the midwife said they can do monitoring every 15 mins, rather than needing to be hooked up to a static corner. Previously when I've discussed water birth they've said they have waterproof dopplers that they use in the pool during normal waterbirths so presumably they should be able to use that in this situation too. I'm just not sure if there's any different kind of monitoring they'd need to do for GBS. My trust do seem to be very pro-waterbirth and pro- MLU and very much encourage active labours, so I'm hopeful they'll be open to it.

GrubbyWindows · 08/04/2016 19:48

That sounds great Mollie! It sounds like it might be a goer!!!

MindfulBear · 09/04/2016 00:06

Re gbs - I'm not bothering with the test because it is notoriously unreliable as your status can change so much. Plus I would not be comfortable with routine antibiotics because it can really bugger up baby's gut flora, your own as well and can then increase the risk of thrush and damage chances of breastfeeding....
Instead I am taking a daily dose of:
2000 mcg vitamin c
2 garlic capsules
2 probiotic tablets
Trying to avoid sugar and trying to drink plenty of water.....

^this protocol is supposed to guard against gbs and I am hoping to reduce my risk of thrush through it too. I had it at the end of pg last time and ended up with thrush in my boobs and in DS. It is rare to get it in newborns and it is over diagnosed but we definitely had it. Was horrific and can real impact ability to bf.

I found the protocol on line. Sounded like a better line of defence to me!!!

MindfulBear · 09/04/2016 00:16

If you are thinking about gbs you should really get swabbed just before labour and then they should administer antibiotics to baby if necessary after birth.... Just because you have it does not mean baby will get it. I can't remember the stats but the risk is not as high as the press would have you believe and the scare stories seem to usually come about because a baby was not followed up as soon as they should have when a problem presented. (So always trust your gut and don't let MWs or Drs fob you off)

MindfulBear · 09/04/2016 00:17

Urghhh. Have had too much pizza and ice cream. Big mistake. How will I ever get to sleep tonight?!!

MindfulBear · 09/04/2016 00:18

Btw DS is nearly 4 and I still wear those huge pants.... Got mine in M&S. So comfy!!!! So unsexy Grin

cheshirem2b · 09/04/2016 04:50

Hi guys. Sorry I've been AWOL. Pregnancy with a toddler whilst working is a killer.
Anybody else starting to struggle with sleeping? I don't remember it being this rubbish last time but never mind.
We are decorating the spare room for dd1 this weekend so baby can have the nursery. Looking forward to it and dreading it in equal measure I think.
With my toddlers mn group we set up a fb group to keep in touch easier. Great for night feed chats etc. Anyone up for that?

cheshirem2b · 09/04/2016 04:59

Oops! Just seen mention of fb group. Could somebody add me please?

Belleboo23 · 09/04/2016 07:10

Well following from my last post never thought I'd be saying this but the pains I'd had came back followed by massive blood loss was rushed to hospital on the 7th at 7.45 by 8.35 my perfect but tiny little princess was with us. My placenta had begun to come away completey spontaneously can be due to trauma/drink /drugs etc but none of that applied to me. Lost over 2 litres of blood but we are both here which is the main thing it can be very life threatening for both. She's doing well they are really pleased with her, havnt chosen a name yet, was a good weight at 3lbs for 29 +2 weeks must have been the chocolate lol! she needs help breathing but is mostly doing it on her own, almost straight away she was taken of the ventilator and put on an oxygen mask
