December 2016... Babies

1002 replies

Penguinepenguins · 21/03/2016 18:30

Doesn't seem to be a thread yet for babies due in December, possibly because I'm crazy and POAS really really early but a line is a line and today was my "double check" second day and a BFP it was again!

I sadly had a miscarriage in November found the July babies thread a huge help in my early days of pregnancy and the ladies were very supportive after the MC - I've just returned to mumsnet under a new name as I was finding it a bit painful at one point and went a bit cold turkey from it all!

So here is a bit about me

I'm 38
This will be baby number one for me
EDD 3rd December (know when I ovulated been using the monitor - the app ok many apps I've consulted this morning confirm this as the date

Very nervous after last time but want to enjoy every minute I can, I loved being pregnant before and want to do all the same things as before just keeping everything crossed for a sticky one.

Who is ready to join me Smile

So it was my first midwife appointment yesterday, basically just a referral for booking in! But I got given a book with lots of offers of freebies in it (Emma's diary - is that a local or nationwide thing?) and some really useful info for a first timer.

She said my dating scan will be after my holiday which is quite late, so I've just booked a early reassurance scan for two weeks today. Will feel happier going away knowing that it's all ok so far (I hope Confused).

EDD of 4th December. I hope it's on time, shall buy it a calendar!

Thisisbonkers · 16/04/2016 12:48

becci we've already been discussing names Blush but naming is going to be the most fun part! Or cause for massive arguments Grin

TinySalmon · 16/04/2016 14:02

becci thank god I'm not the only one! I went to The Toddler & Baby show in Esher yesterday and they had a cute stall sells big designer names so I bought a jumper in blue and a dress in pink just in case. Ha!

becciandbump · 16/04/2016 18:56

Phew glad it's not just me, had a sneak peak at prams as we walked past and yes we were discussing names as early as the week we were trying on honeymoon it's so exciting xx

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 19:04

Hahaha, we have all been at it Grin DS didn't want to come food shopping today so we left him at home and went and snuck into the baby shop like teenagers Grin DH is sure he wants "A clicky thing" ie a carseat that goes from a base in the car onto the pushchair frame. I had to explain that you can't just buy the frame and get the seat unit later because that isn't a thing. Now we both think it should be. I also think it's reeeeeally expensive to get one like that but not sure. He has had a bit of a wake up call at the cost of prams. Was not a serious trip as far too early, but still interesting.

I'm just tired and sleepy, no energy and CBA to do anything today.

underrugsswept · 16/04/2016 20:14

I think it's called a 'travel system' Bertie. We have an icandy pram with a maxi cosi seat that clips onto the pram frame with adapters. It's Invaluable when baby falls asleep in the car, you just transfer them over and off you go! The icandy pram is really heavy though and takes up a lot of boot space so I'm sure there are a few different ones to check out.

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 21:54

Yes we have a tiny car with the most miniscule boot Hmm DH was talking about changing it, which we might still do if we can do so at the same dealership. Just a bit of a pain as the car we have was brand new last summer!

I had a Loola Up with DS and I never bothered with the compatible car seat. I just had a generic Mothercare one. I wouldn't buy a cheap one now as I feel they are low quality, but Maxi Cosi do a seat called the Citi SPS here which is a more basic seat and is much cheaper, but it's not compatible with any pushchairs or a base for the car. Car seats are REALLY expensive here and even the CabrioFix is €260 full price. It looks like it's often available for about €160ish though. The pebble is €290 at full price or €200 if you shop around. The Citi is the most reasonably priced one at about €80. Everything else is over €200. Eye watering.

We both feel similar about not really wanting a huge carrycot as long as the seat itself lies flat. I am thinking though if we find a pushchair where the frame itself takes a car seat, it will take up less room in the car that way? And I can just use the seat unit if I'm going from home. Hard to tell. DH just visited some friends of ours who recently had a baby and was really impressed at the way they could transfer the sleeping baby in the car seat from car to pram with no issues. I'm not really convinced it's necessary or will save that much bother. But we'll see.

FlyingSpaghettiM0nster · 16/04/2016 21:57

5 weeks tomorrow, symptoms really starting now! I suffer from migraines maybe about once or twice a year.... I've had 2 in the past 9 days. 2. Thankfully the one this morning was mainly just aura, the headache was practically nothing Confused Poor hubby made me breakfast in bed and I couldn't finish it! Anyone else had weird migraines? Another weird symptom... TMI I know, but after having the big O, I get little cramps like AF pains. I know it's normal (now) but I had no idea about it until I Googled it in a panic Grin The next 8 months are going to be interesting!

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 21:58

Also DS was a placid baby, if he fell asleep in the car and I took him out to put into the pushchair/sling he would whimper a little bit but as soon as we started moving he was gone again. Hmmm maybe I am being a bit naive here.

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 22:05

Ah yes I still get cramping after orgasm actually Flying, it could be a permanent feature! I had forgotten that.

DH downloaded an app which allows you to assemble a gallery of "bumpies" Grin so he keeps winding me up by asking me to take one. So I made him stand behind me and we compared beer bellies for a photos. Mine is full of water, according to his app.

I also had my first crazy moment, when I shouted at him because he said he didn't mind thinning the gravy after I'd already poured it on my dinner. I was annoyed because I thought HE liked it thick. Luckily halfway through my rant I was like "Oh..... sorry. I'm being crazy pregnant lady now." He says I can only use that excuse until the placenta is formed Grin

FlyingSpaghettiM0nster · 16/04/2016 22:23

Oh dear Bertie I've not had my first crazy pregnant lady moment yet! Not looking forward to that one. Have you started taking bump photos? I'd like to do it (with this being my first and all) but not sure when to start, the first few weeks will be pretty boring I imagine!

I'm surprised that the orgasm cramping isn't more widely known, you would think we would have heard about it before now. I read a forum post somewhere and some women get them so painful that they avoid orgasming for the whole pregnancy! Torture!

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 22:34

I just decided to do one a month so four weeks being month one. No there definitely isn't anything to see yet. I think you can start to see something at about 3 months if you're comparing photos. It can be cool to have one every week to see the progression but if you're doing that I'd probably start at 10 weeks instead unless you don't mind having a lot of photos the same.

Weirdly it seems like there's lots about pregnancy and birth which just isn't common knowledge at all until you've been through it and then everyone is like "Oh yeah I had that too!" I think the thing is it's just all so new and confusing the first time that by the end you can't remember what to tell people! And different people experience different things.

Does anyone have any books yet? I've ordered Kaz Cooke's rough guide to pregnancy and birth just because I can't easily browse through any English books and I remember it had a little guide up the side of the page with a measurement of how big the baby is which I liked and her writing style made me laugh so I've been boring and got the same one again. But now I've done that I've just remembered that I wanted the Kate Evans book. Hmm. Maybe I'll ask for it for my birthday along with the breastfeeding one.

FlyingSpaghettiM0nster · 16/04/2016 22:39

I guess a 5 week one tomorrow might be a good idea though in case I get epic bloating! As for books, I have ordered Maggie Blott's Day by Day Pregnancy Book, my mate recommended it so going to give it a go! Will have to hide it when the family come to visit though, not telling my lot until 12 weeks because they're a bunch of worriers... wonder where I get it from Wink

BertieBotts · 16/04/2016 22:42

Yes defo an early one for comparison too.

I will have to hide my book from my DS. Though he knows something is up. We are thinking we will tell him after the 12 week scan but TBH I don't know that we will get that far.

TipBoov · 16/04/2016 22:47

I have a copy of What to Expect When You're Expecting, which is quite good for looking things up, but I don't really like the tone - it tries too hard to be friendly and it's just cringy.

DH had a copy of the Expectant Dad's Survival Guide which he found useful as it didn't harp on about beer and football.

Symptoms-wise I'm knackered! I had a big lie-in this morning but still felt exhausted before I'd even got out of bed! I still have to take 2 tablets and a pessary twice a day as part of the IVF (until 9 weeks) at 7am and 7pm so I hate waking up to have to do that. This morning my alarm went off, and I dreamt that if taken the medication! Luckily DH is on the ball and woke me up properly.

I have started drinking loads of very weak orange squash, I normally only drink sparkling water so it's odd that I've developed a taste it!

HidinginPlainS1ght · 16/04/2016 23:17

Too early for me to think about baby stuff. We had an icandy but didn't even open the box before DC1 died. Unless we have the same or similar problems I imagine different considerations for choosing prams this time.

I feel like symptoms are very on and off which is making me very anxious. I kind of expected to be anxious but I really hate these first 12 weeks. Chances of miscarriage are so high but chances of everything being fine are better but there is no way to know. I really want a crystal ball.

BabyBumpHopeful · 17/04/2016 02:47

6 weeks today (Saturday)! I finally don't feel so grossly bloated and more "normal". I am tired but then I have a sleep apnoea so who really knows what's what there!

I looked at getting "What to Expect" but it has some not so good reviews (especially about it being condescending). Still, I can get it for free reading on Amazon and I gave it a shot but I still don't like it. It jumps around and just isn't very well organised. Instead I got "Mayo Clinic: Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy". It also goes into early baby days so I've been reading that... so far, so good :)

Travel system prams are so common here in the US that it's pretty much the only kind to get. I really want a pram that allows the handle to move to have the child facing you (normally once they're out of the carrier they face forward).

I have an app on my phone that tells me some hints and tips each days. One of the things was to get a registry started and I must say I enjoy that! I'm doing it online at the moment, just checking stuff out. DH and I were at Wal-Mart the other day (power was out at home) and I showed him one of the pack-and-plays I was thinking about getting. Not really sure he was paying much attention but still :P I'm excited to actually go in person and not be worried about running into people we know (so once people actually know). Squee!

On that vein, anyone have any "must haves" they've been planning on getting? Or "definite nos"? I know there are lots of threads about this topic but still interested :)

Happy to see everyone else is doing well :)

StubbleTurnips · 17/04/2016 06:54

Oh must haves - I'm on for a Babybay or Fabimax co sleeper cot. I am not falling for the Moses basket thing. We had he most beautiful one last time and it was never used, sold it on eBay for pennies Angry

Otherwise nothing different, had a look at buggy boards and found the one for our Silvercross is £79 which seems crazy.

We've got the Miriam Stoppard Pregnancy book, I liked it - quite matter of fact and not at all twee.

Mejse · 17/04/2016 07:34

Hi everyone!
I got my BFP on Thursday I was so convinced that I was pregnant for the past week but I held off until AF was due before I tested. If I didn't get a BFP I would have been quite concerned that I was going crazy. DH was pretty surprised by how fast the line appeared and how strong it was.
4+3 today and EDD 22/12
This will be my first and DH's second. DSS lives with us and will be 8 by the time baby is due.

We live in Denmark and travel systems aren't really a thing here. Everyone uses big old fashioned (very expensive!!) prams here. Babies will take all of their naps bundled up in their prams and left somewhere outside in pretty much any weather. The first time I saw a pram left outside and realised there was a baby inside I almost had a heart attack, 2 and a half years on I am almost used to it.

hopeful the only must have so far for us is a stokke trip trap chair, DSS still uses his now and DH and his brothers had theirs until they were about 10, I think it's another quite danish thing.
I have a feeling we will be buying most things when we got to visit my parents in England, as denmark is pretty expensive.

Helbelle75 · 17/04/2016 07:54

My sister in law recommended 'my new pregnancy bible' by Anne Deans and I'm finding that really informative. I also have the baby buddy app on my phone which gives information every day and allows you to write down notes and appointments.
I'm 6+3 today and symptom wise have hugely sore boobs, very tired, I feel dizzy if I stand up too quickly and rather than feeling nauseous I'm massively hungry! A bit worried I have no sickness yet, but my mum says she didn't really have sickness either. And there's plenty of time yet!
I went to an awards dinner last night and was asked 3 times if I was pregnant, because I wasn't drinking! I didn't confirm or deny, just said I was driving. It's going to be so hard to keep this quiet for the next few weeks!

BertieBotts · 17/04/2016 08:30

It's defo too early to think about baby stuff but I'm too far down that route to care :o

Like you a parent facing pushchair is important to me. I'll also want one which is fairly snuggly if this baby sticks because the 2 months after December are freezing here.

I am planing to get an Ikea cot and just convert it to a Co sleeper. The purpose made ones are normally expensive and also only crib sized. We will need to share a room for a while so it makes sense to be prepared.

I definitely plan to use slings again too. A stretchy wrap to start and then DH has requested a carrier with buckles, straps and pockets so will probably look at a SSC for later. I have my beady eye on the boba 4G! He wants a plain design though which is a bit boring.

As for not getting - my list would be changing table, special baby sized wardrobe, baby bath, carrycot, baby monitor (we have a tiny flat) but DH was entranced by the baby baths and really wants a changing table so we will see.

babyinthacorner · 17/04/2016 08:55

Just popping on to wave to Bertie & Under! April bus buddies - so pleased to see you!!!
Speaking of books - I have a Dorling Kindersley book I used last time which I'm reading periodically. I left it on the sofa and my mum spotted it when she came to drop DD off the other day and asked DH if I was pg! NOOOOOOOO! Didn't want her to find out that way!!! DH managed to deflect it, saying I'm just generally obsessed with babies/watching one born etc.
We're going to tell everyone soon anyway as I'm feeling so sick all the time, I need some sympathy from someone other than DH. Have had to tell some of my work colleagues as I nearly fainted on the tube the other morning. Will need them to cover me if I have to suddenly leave the classroom or something. Another colleague who's 8 months pg guessed when she caught me staring at my lunch looking green. No fun, this bit.

BertieBotts · 17/04/2016 10:53

Hello!! :)

We told DS this morning. We were going to wait, but he loves babies and I thought he'd like to join me in seeing how big it's getting day by day or looking at pictures etc. He is 7 so he can definitely understand it will take a while. I did though want to keep it focused on the now bit and not mention "Going to be a big brother" or anything about Christmas but DH got too excited and did. Oops. Oh well. We explained that as baby is teeeeny tiny right now, only the size of a seed, that we have to wait and see if it's healthy and strong enough to stay and that there's a chance it might not. So I think he's aware. Now he's running around making sure I only eat healthy food and not junk food Grin

Rosa89 · 17/04/2016 11:02

Hi everyone, checking back in! Think I'm about 6+4 now and still no symptoms. I had none whatsoever with DD but was very sick with the pregnancy I MC so not sure what to think. Got a letter from hospital for the booking in Appointment and it's not till May which feels like ages away!

As for must haves: I recommend a co sleeping crip to everyone! We have the chicco next2me, very spacious and lasted until DD was a year old. She can still fit in their now. We originaly had a mini swinging crib lent to us by a friend but I found the getting up multiple times in the night in the first few weeks way too difficult. I also want to look into buying a sleepyhead to put in the crib. DD hated being swaddled but was a very jumpy sleeper.

Mums with chn who will be 2 or under what will you plan to do for buggies? I'm dreading having to look at double buggies they all seem huge!

BertieBotts · 17/04/2016 11:06

DH has told his parents, and I'm going to tell my mum and sister (just because they are often together) on Tuesday. We aren't telling any other family yet because they will get all excited and we want to wait until six weeks or the first scan.

DH has told his immediate boss in case he needs to take time off for appointments. He's actually a friend of ours too and he got married last year, so I'm secretly hoping that his wife will be pregnant soon so we can be pregnant together.
