The problem with my epidural was that it enabled them to do an episiotomy without my knowledge or consent. Also, the MW topped it up without asking me right near the end so I couldn't walk/get out of bed for seven hours after giving birth.

FuzzyOwl · 05/04/2016 17:52

Juliette when I gave birth epidurals were only available between a certain stage of your labour (I can't remember exactly but perhaps 4 to 7 cm dilated) and if you were too late for one, it was tough. Whilst you might be asking for one from 1cm dilated, there could only be one anaesthetist who is busy elsewhere. So have a back up plan! I fully intended to have an epidural and my biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to get one in the timeframe and, if all had gone to plan, I wouldn't since nobody believed I was in labour until I was 9 cm dilated (apparently I was too polite! Confused) and then I was whisked off for an EMCS due to a breech baby (who I had spent 12 weeks telling my midwife about, but being ignored).

Nuchal bloods back 1 in 7350 chance of downs hooray I can now tell the world. Grin

Afreshstartplease · 05/04/2016 18:05

Great news figgy!

A home birth doesn't appeal to me either

A) because of the mess
B) because of the noise
C) because I'd rather be in the hospital just incase

I've had three DC already I know how messy and noisy it can be!

Two sleeps til my scan!

FuzzyOwl · 05/04/2016 18:28

Great news Figgy.

Alwaysinahurrynow · 05/04/2016 19:18

Good new figgy!

goldenpineapple · 05/04/2016 19:24

Schnitzel I'm just over the water in Bristol! Great to hear positive experience of similar MLU.

Good news Figgy - so exciting to be able to tell people - cant wait for this bit!

fresh two sleeps for me too! Think there's loads of us having scans on Thurs!

pinkbuttons · 05/04/2016 19:32

I love the idea of a home birth particularly because things went so quick in my last labour (80 mins), but were very lucky to have one of the best MLU's in the country around the corner so feels like the best of both worlds.
Those of you with other children and home births, what do you do with them? Are they in the house with you?

athousandsplendidsuns · 05/04/2016 19:35

Elcs for me due to 4th degree tear last time. Got an appointment booked for 17 weeks to discuss with consultant but there's no way I'm budging! Two sleeps to scan here too....hurry up!

Afreshstartplease · 05/04/2016 19:38

Oh no Sad

I miscounted Sad

Three sleeps Sad

TeaGirl3 · 05/04/2016 19:53

Has anyone else experienced sharp pains in their ribs / back on one side? I've had it all day - initially thought I'd slept awkwardly or it's due to me coughing lots, as I'm recovering from a chest infection, but now I'm thinking it's my body changing. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to ease the pain? Paracetamol and a bath?

BadlyWrittenPoem · 05/04/2016 19:58

Pink, mine were in the house during my home births. One reason we had a doula was so that there was someone concentrating on looking after me when DH was busy with the children. The eldest was present for both actual births (we woke her right at the end at her request) and the younger one was asleep. We had lots of discussions beforehand and watched carefully selected birth videos together so she knew what to expect and that she wasn't guaranteed to be there. Some people just send the children elsewhere the same as if they were having a hospital birth.

FuzzyOwl · 05/04/2016 19:59

Tea I had really painful sharp pains on my left side and just found out today it is from a uti and I need antibiotics. If paracetamol and a bath don't help, it might be worth chatting to your midwife tomorrow and asking if a urine test can be done. Hope it eases soon for you.

TeaGirl3 · 05/04/2016 20:23

Thanks Fuzzy that's very helpful!

TeaGirl3 · 05/04/2016 20:23

Ps hope you feel better soon too Fuzzy!

FuzzyOwl · 05/04/2016 20:23

No worries and thank you. Smile

pod100 · 05/04/2016 20:24

Ah man, am so jealous of you all with scans and scan dates - I'm still waiting to find out when mine will be!

My midwife has recommended a water birth for me as I had quite a bad hip injury last year so it will help with that. I also need to do some asking around about my local hospital when everything is out in the open. I've heard one or two stories that haven't impressed me but can't really ask anyone just yet! It's annoying as it's 5 mins from my house and there's a great unit half an hour away, but I don't think I'd want to risk the extra travelling time

Figgygal · 05/04/2016 20:27

Pineapple I'm also in bristol though am going to deliver in Bath where do you think southmead or st michaels?

athousandsplendidsuns · 05/04/2016 21:06

figgy my ds was born at st Micheal's and I was happy with my treatment in both the mlu and birth pool where I started and the theatre I ended up in. I have heard good things about partners being able to stay over at bath but am sticking with what I know. pineapple maybe we'll unknowingly cross paths at our scans on Thursday!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 06/04/2016 07:08

Pod I'm still waiting too!

Eggy is today your appointment at epau? Thinking of you. x

How many people have had the flu jab?

Afreshstartplease · 06/04/2016 07:42

Now it's two sleeps!

I had the flu jab ages ago like as soon as I found out the gp got me

Good luck today Eggy

My local hospital gets slagged off a lot, but I've had three DC there and no major issues so I'll stick to what I know

bringonthrsummer · 06/04/2016 07:50

As a lot of you have had scans now, just wanted to check if anyone else wants to join the fb group, it's completely secret. Inbox me and I'll sort it for you X

Alwaysinahurrynow · 06/04/2016 07:58

This may be a controversial view, but hoping that my hospital hasn't started letting partners stay over on the ward. I've had extended stays twice now (at least three nights) and it's bad enough at the moment when partners can be there from 8am to 10pm, let alone 24 hours. I ended up asking the midwives to kick out the partners last time who were still there when it got to 10:30 and some were still there and were being very noisy (it wasn't the babies or the mothers - that were the problem).

Afreshstartplease · 06/04/2016 08:09

I don't think partners should stay over unless in private rooms

Luckily I only had to stay on following first birth and was out within six hours the other two times

MyBreadIsEggy · 06/04/2016 08:16

Thanks for the well wishes for today! I have found a little ray of hope in that I felt a bit sick again this morning - sounds crazy, but I'm actually happy to be feeling sick because it could mean that my baby is still ok!
