I had an unplanned home birth with dd2 who came very quickly (labour of under 2hrs) with no pain relief. I would do it again but we've since moved and live 10 minutes away from the hospital so I'm undecided at this stage.

laughingGnomette · 23/01/2016 09:33

Violet - Midwife led unit sounds like a good option. You can always transfer if it gets too much. You've got loads of time though, do all the research and decide what you think will be best for you. If ultimately don't feel comfortable with limited access to pain relief then there is nothing wrong with opting for a birth on the labour ward.
I think think the transfer rate for first time mums to hospital from a home birth is about 50% but this probably includes non-emergency transfers too.
I really had my heart set on a calm, zen-like birth centre (which is like a hotel at my hospital) birth but baby had other ideas! As it turned out, the labour ward wasn't too bad (they even had birthing pools on it). That said, as soon as I arrived, I heard one of the other ladies on the ward screaming "get this f*cking thing out of me!!" Shock Grin

MollieRos · 23/01/2016 09:49

I'd quite like a home birth, ideally with a birthing pool. There's also a midwife led unit literally 5 minutes down the road that is my other preferred option. Obviously I can't plan for what will actually happen but ideally I'd like to avoid going up to the main hospital (about 20 mins away from home/the unit) if II possibly can. My midwives have been really supportive of the home birth option even though it's my first. It's tricky to know whether when it comes to it I'll feel more confident being in a slightly more medical environment in the MLU rather than at home. The MLU is very new and nice enough, but nothing quite like being at home. I'm slightly worried about the clean up operation afterwards though! (though obviously it'll be DH that gets to deal with that Grin)

strawberrypenguin · 23/01/2016 10:51

Hi all. Do you mind if I join you? I'm 20+6 with DS2 due 6th June (seems like its coming up fast now can't believe I'm over the halfway point)

It will be a hospital birth for me as I've got GD although they might not induce this time depending on how big baby gets! It does mean I will get extra scans which I'm finding quite reassuring!

mrsmugoo · 23/01/2016 11:58

Envious of the home births! Wanted one first time and ended up with an ELCS. Didn't want to fight the battle this time round so labour suite it is...

Violet88 · 23/01/2016 13:01

Thanks for all the info re the homebirth v's midwife led unit its much appreciated. It's good to hear that the midwife might not automatically be against it for a first time mum.

Mrspopper · 23/01/2016 14:21

I was booked in for home birth last time but my waters broke and I didn't go into labour so was induced but didn't have pain relief and she arrived easily so am low risk. Am booked in for home birth this time as long as we are not in the middle of a building project! My last labour was fast so I think a home birth is a good plan.
I am in ikea... Why did I think this was a good idea?!

BabySocks · 23/01/2016 14:38

Think of the hot dogs mrspopper

Can I ask a personal question please ( obviously no one has to answer :) ) How much weight have you all put on so far? I have put on 13 lbs which I think is OK - I am just really aware as I put on loads last time (although a lot was cake when I was breastfeeding Blush )

Betty79 · 23/01/2016 15:14

Baby socks I have put on about 10lbs, I seemed to have a big weight gain between 16/18 weeks then I haven't put on anything the last couple of weeks (20 weeks tomorrow) I'm surprised it's not more as I've been eating all the time!

Snowflake16 · 23/01/2016 15:21

babysocks I've put on 12lbs so far at 21+4 weeks.

kezod · 23/01/2016 15:44

I think I've only put on 5lbs this time so far, I've been trying to eat much healthier and walk/swim/yoga, but your body does whatever it wants!
Was it emma who said she felt she was on an emotional rollercoaster? I just burst out crying during sex last night! Put the hubby right off I can tell you! He just had to lie there and hold me bless him, not exactly sure what happened but I'm putting it down to crazy hormones, I didn't even feel particularly sad! I've also started crying when I was hysterically laughing at something a few weeks ago! Looking forward to getting back to me!

1Sunnydays · 23/01/2016 17:11

Babysocks I've put on 10.5lbs and I'm 20+5. It's my first DC so don't have anything to compare it to.

jellybelly85 · 23/01/2016 17:37

1st pregnancy here too, and I've put on about 8lbs since my pre-pregnancy weight. But this doesn't include me losing about 4lbs in 1st trimester - so 8-12lbs gain overall. Trying to walk 10,000 steps a day, which seems to be do-able with work commute. Too knackered in the evenings to do anything else.

BabySocks · 23/01/2016 17:42

Seems I am a bit above average then, but thank you for sharing :) I find it hard not to just have another chocolate etc... especially as the whole world says "ah go on... you're pregnant" Cake

Torfhinn · 23/01/2016 17:44

Welcome strawberry!

I've put on about 5lbs this pregnancy but this time last time i had put on 14lbs. I am a firm believer that the body knows what it wants and needs so I'm not worried.

jbiscuits · 23/01/2016 18:43

Welcome strawberry

I don't own a set of scales so no idea how much weight I've put on.

I'm hoping for a waterbirth in the MLU this time round. I'd hoped for this last time, but my waters broke and had meconium in so I had to have continuous monitoring on the labour ward. To be fair though it wasn't too bad. I think I was so zoned out I could have been anywhere!

emma85x · 23/01/2016 21:47

Hi Kezod yep that was me! Oh bless you, what a time to cry - your DH must have been disappointed!! Shock I hope you're feeling a bit better now??

We went to look at Bugaboos in John Lewis today. I really like the tweed one, thankfully DH does too! I'm thinking about waiting to get one to see if I can get a good deal at the Baby Show at the Excel at the end of February. Apparently you can get some good bargains, we're going on the Sunday with last minute discounts in mind!

Re: Weight gain, I've gained 6lbs but I am overweight. It definitely depends on your pre-conception weight so I really wouldn't worry. Have your cake and eat it! CakeGrin

emma85x · 23/01/2016 21:48

Thanks also for the advice on paracetamol earlier x

mrsmugoo · 23/01/2016 22:03

I've gained about a stone but I had previously only just lost 2 stone and had only maintained it for a couple of months so I guess it was always going to happen if I threw caution to the wind with my eating!

I intend to 5:2 diet it all back off as soon as I can after birth so enjoying all the chocolate biscuits now while I can!

MiraclesDoHappen82 · 23/01/2016 22:06

I've put on a stone Blush first DC so not sure what the norm is. I've gone from 9st 4 to 10st 5.

Osirus · 23/01/2016 22:30

I've had emotional outbursts of tears too! I was lying in bed last week sobbing because I did have adequate duvet coverage! DP had most of it and I didn't want to wake him - it's so irrational!

MollieRos · 23/01/2016 23:28

I've put on about a stone at 21+4, but I'm naturally a bit underweight, and at my consultant appointment I was told they'd expect me to put on between 2 and 3 stone during my whole pregnancy. Apparently you tend to put on more if you're underweight, which seems bizarre. I'm not worried about it, more interested to see how my body's changing, and I think my body will just do what it needs to do. Mostly all I want to eat is oranges and other fruit so luckily not too bad, though I have been thinking about digestive biscuits the last couple of days. Perhaps my healthy cravings are coming to an end!

kezod oh dear, not great timing for an emotional outburst!

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/01/2016 07:25

Got out of bed this morning and felt drunk. The room was spinning so much. I'm back in bed and fine on my side but if I close my eyes or lie on my back it happens again. Room spins and feeling sick, just like when you wake up half hungover, half still drunk. Any ideas? 21 weeks today

jellybelly85 · 24/01/2016 07:50

After Christmas I had put on 7lbs (in 2 weeks!!) so being a little alarmed, I asked my MW: should I be worried? what is normal weight gain?

MW said: we tend to monitor/worry about weight gain if the patient has diabetes, for other mums-to-be there is no hard and fast rule and weight gain varies from person to person.

I found this quite reassuring,

17caterpillars that sounds like me when I was in the throes of nausea. I just had to wait for it to lessen/pass... have you had much nausea?

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/01/2016 08:22

I've gone from throwing up daily to not at all the past two days. Hoping my sickness hasn't been replaced with room spins
