Those of you with dh/dps packing hospital bags for themselves, what are they putting in them? Dh wouldn't have a clue what he might need and if all goes well on wednesday I'll have to get him to pack one. With elcs last time he was in and out with minimal fuss so didn't actually need anything.

Dd is making me laugh tonight. I've been clearing bits out of this living room since tea time. She's dressed up as a princess with clipy clopy shoes and is doing the hovering for me with the massive dyson. My sister was planning to get her a toy one when bump arrives, but her wanting to use the real one is so much more useful!.

Thank goodness chip turned up quickly hayley. Some hamsters are just indestructable, looks like he might be one of them.

neh welcome to the world of needing to fend for yourself with medication. You need to be extra careful when pregnant or breast feeding!

maybebabybee · 22/01/2016 19:49

Dobby DP has got a change of clothes, some cash, toothbrush, snacks and a drink in his.

Paperblank · 22/01/2016 20:28

Same as Maybe

DH has got a couple of t-shirts, clean pants and socks, soap bag, kindle, loads of change. He's also got his Weird Fish fleece to cosy up in. I doubt DH will go home until the baby is born - He's a bit stubborn with stuff like this!!

We've got a few bits in our picnic bag, squash, go ahead bars, percy pigs but there is an ASDA on site at the hospital so I imagine he'll pop out and stock up on supplies if necessary via the Costa Coffee shop

Everyone is so organised, not thought about anyone's bags yet! Had a scan today as my placenta was low at 20 weeks and pleased to report all is fine now! Baby is about average on all the measurements and weighs 4lb 2oz Smile

hayleycookie · 22/01/2016 20:52

Great news Mrs! Bet that's a load off your mind. Was it mean to be a growth scan too, or did they just have a check while you were in there?

DH doesn't have a hospital bag packed. Last time he just nipped to the canteen when he was hungry, and popped home to shower and change. I imagine he will do similar this time. He's so laid back about everything.

Dobby your DD sounds so adorable! You should ''let'' her play with the duster and polish next Wink

Paperblank · 22/01/2016 20:54

MrsElls don't worry it's a five minute job once you've decided what you want to take, and got it all together.

I've put all the babies things our spare change bag, all my stuff is going in my little wheelie case, DH has got a rucksack and then just the little cool bag (same size you'd take your sarnies in to work).

I've got three lists which I'll happily email over to you - as long as you promise not to laugh! I am a bit of a nob; I loves a list, they make me happy Blush

Yep i'm relieved, I think they just do a growth scan as you are there. My dh just used to pop home for things as well and my mil brought things in, we live a bit further from the hospital now though so might have to plan better this time. The hospital does have an M&S food now though so don't need to worry about taking nice food.

1frenchfoodie · 22/01/2016 21:55

rosie thanks for the amazon £10 off £50 code. Used it to buy a TENS machine after dithering over hiring v buying -came in just under £40 where hire is nearly £30 and DH has his eyes on it for back pain he gets from time to time after an old injury.

me624 I've got 19 working days left too, finishing on a thur so I can got to a great local friday market. Judging bubthe last few weeks, they'll fly buy.

Missikat · 22/01/2016 23:01

Hayley, sorry to hear about your escapee, I had hamsters for years, re fail safe capture method as detailed in my ' guide to hamsters' which we employed many times was get a bucket, put carrots (or other fave food in it) and make a 'staircase' of books leading up to the top of it, if you get my just? They then smell the food, climb up the 'stairs', fall in the bucket and can't escape. Our hamsters were always escaping and it always worked! Good luck xxx

MrsBenWyatt · 22/01/2016 23:46

Hi all.

So pleased to hear that Zach is doing so well, Missi. Can't believe he is eight weeks old!

Bags are sort of packed here. Having an ELCS, which is a new experience for me, so not entirely sure what I will need! DH can fend for himself!

I have taken up crochet due to bed rest, so I am working on a blanket for DC3!

Missikat · 23/01/2016 00:07

Whoops was too quick posting hamster catching advice and hadn't seen Chip was back! Yey great news. If he ever escapes again then you have a new trick to try Hayley!

dobbythedoggy · 23/01/2016 00:09

mrs if you're elcs is anything like mine was with dd your dh won't need anything. Dh was in and out very quickly as the side effects of the drugs made me so sleepy. We went in at 12, went down to theater at 4, he was heading home by 7.30.

As for you I was told to think of it more as packing for a few nights away for you and baby. Best tip is to make sure tooth brush, hair brush, some sort of facial or wet wipes are packed obviously at the top of your bag. If your hospital run an afternoon theater list you may not be up and about until the following morning so a hca/mca may well be around to help with it in evening. Taking arnica in the run up to cs really seemed to limit the brusing.

I wasn't at all hungery afterwards, but if you miss the meal times might be an idea to have snacks/sandwhiches in a cool bag.

Taking your crochet with you or something to do/read while you wait to be taken to theater is also a good idea. Me and the three other ladies I was with on the ward all found the wait very sereal and none of us had really prepared anything to do.

hayley dd is already well trained, her idea of a treat is doing the washing up or being allowed to scrub the bath! She loves polishing too. She still makes a mess with the best of them and isn't keen on putting her toys away at home. But anything cleaning related she loves.

IndomitabIe · 23/01/2016 07:45

Lol, Missi, that was the hamster-catching tip I typed out as I was reading through yesterday - then deleted when Chip reappeared! (Except I reckon ham is the best hamster treat!)

I've won the lie-in game this morning. Usually DH is dead to the world and my back is so sore I have to get up with DS. Don't know how I've managed it today (because DS had been coming in since about 6am) but DH is up and has delivered tea and cereal! I'm so full of cold though, maybe he's just decided I'm a biohazard!

docmcstuffins1 · 23/01/2016 09:13

Glad Chip is back Hayley. When I was little we had a hamster called George who used to escape from his cage every night. In the end my dad made him a ramp up the back of the chest of drawers his cage was on, he used to get out at night, go for a wander and then let himself back in. We used to find him asleep in there every morning with the cage door wide open. Once my grandparents stayed over in my room so George was moved upstairs with me to my sisters room. In the morning he was missing. We eventually found him in my grandpa's suitcase (on the top of the chest of drawers in my room where he cage usual was). He'd got out of my sisters room, downstairs, and into my room while avoiding the cat and dog! He'd climbed into the suitcase and made a nest in a box of tissues!

I'm in the process of packing a hospital bag. Expecting to be in overnight (FTM) - how many nappies, baby clothes and maternity pads would you take? I'm absolutely clueless Confused

MyNameIsSuz · 23/01/2016 09:26

I'd take one pack each of size 1 nappies and maternity pads, doc, and five of each vests and babygros. Though I saw recently on another thread someone's midwife recommended eight of each.

Have been up since silly o clock with ds, I feel so horrible, all lightheaded and sick. And there was nothing nice for breakfast, I asked dh to get something yesterday and he decided he was going to make pancakes.. he's still in bed, obviously, and I didn't want to cook at half six in the bloody morning I just needed something I could eat. Feeling very sorry for myself. Ds and I have had toast, which neither of us really wanted.

IndomitabIe · 23/01/2016 09:49

doc, it's been 5 years since DS so I've got very little recollection of anything. But I've put a pack of 20 nappies and 20 maternity pads (10 massive, 10 thin) in my bag. I was in a couple of nights with DS after having significant repairs. But I can't remember what I took in. I do know that DH obviously went home and was/would have been able to bring other bits in.

I've also got 5 vests and 4 sleepsuits. Planning on putting a woombie in too and my wrap, when it arrives (car seat is the non-carrying kind).

Having a lovely Saturday so far. Desperately need to tidy up and fold the mountain of laundry. Got to wait in for the crib to be delivered today. I'm loving the enforced home time!

hayleycookie · 23/01/2016 10:23

Thank you Missi and Indom. I'm doubtful this will be his last escape attempt so I will definitely remember that for next time!
Doc that hamster sounds amazing! Would be handy if Chip could learn that!

I'm also taking one pack each of pads, nappies, and breast pads. And I think I'm going to take 5 vests and onesies, plus a jumper, hat and mittens for our little boy. And then the blanket and car seat of course.
Still haven't decided what I'm gonna take to wear yet. Will probably be some form of yoga pants and vest top for after the birth and home time. Some pjs for night. I'm assuming I'm going to be induced or c sectioned so not worrying about what to give birth in.

Woken up with pain really low down on my right side. Hoping it means baby has turned head down at last. Guess I'll find out Tuesday!

dobbythedoggy · 23/01/2016 10:43

Well last night was certainly intresting. Forget crap sleep club, it was no sleep club! Up until gone 4 with delightful night sickness, thank goodness it's not too much longer to go. Sickness is definantly back with avengence, several times and day and multipul times in the night, but at least I don't feel as bad as I did with it in early pregnancy. I'm sick and then can carry on. Then the alarm went off at 8 when I was in the middle of the crazzy dream.

Dd and I have made our second batch of mars bar crispies. Unfortantly have discovered I can make a batch for less than £1. First lot dh guzzled last night. This time we've made salted caramel ones, which are going to be amazing juding by the taste when we licked the bowl. Very tempted to make a third batch with a layer of caramel to make them into millionair ones. It keeps dd occupied while the livingroom is done.

indom what car seat do you have? Hated dd's infant carrier when she was tiny and ideally need something that can just stay in my parent's car as we don't drive. But totally cluesless.

Me624 · 23/01/2016 11:01

Poor you dobby. Hope the crispy cakes help you feel better! Mine are setting in the fridge as I type Grin

I've just finally packed my hospital bag! Even a suitcase doesn't seem big enough! Few questions for the experienced mums:

  • how many maternity pads? I've put a pack of 10 in my bag but that doesn't seem like enough, DH keeps saying though I don't need to pack for more than a night as if I've kept in he'll go home and get more (and to be fair I do trust him to bring the right stuff)
  • I've got 4 sleep suits and vests, a hat and a cardi for the baby. And blanket for going home with, does that sound like enough?
  • I've just packed a zip up hoodie rather than a dressing gown as everyone says it's so hot, sensible or will I need a dressing gown?
IndomitabIe · 23/01/2016 11:03

Now, I've only put one pair of (washable) breast pads in. I'm not expecting my milk to come in for 3-4 days and hope to be home by then. If not, I'll send DH out for some.

Oh yes, got a fleece onesie in there and a hat. No socks or mittens though - sleepsuits have feet and the sleeves of the long-sleeved vests and the sleepsuits fold over to make mittens. Put a blanket in there (the one both DS and I came home in!), and trackies for me (I'm only planning on going hospital to car and car to home! I'll do it in PJs if necessary!)

Hope baby has turned for you, Hayley!

Oof, dobby that sounds horrible.

We've got a Britax First Class Plus (about 4 years old now though). Bought it for its extended rear facing capability, but DS got heinously travel sick (still does) so had to face him forwards ASAP anyway! He went into it at about 8 months, but it looks flatter than the carrier type for a newborn.

I had thought if we had a second I'd get one of the Jane lie-flat ones, but I haven't felt the need to spend money on it when we've got the Britax one! And, DS hated lying fully flat in the pram anyway, so not sure it would be the panacea I'd hoped.

Hoping the Britax & Quinny infant seat in the buggy are just the right mid-point between lying flat and giving some support that this one will appreciate.

IndomitabIe · 23/01/2016 11:04

Me - I've done the same, re: zip top rather than dressing gown. Dressing gowns are HUGE and don't fit in any bag ever!

MyNameIsSuz · 23/01/2016 11:11

I'm doing the same me, you can also wear it home afterwards so good for saving space!

Last time I packed loads of breast pads, this time just a couple of pairs as you really don't need that many.

MrsBenWyatt · 23/01/2016 11:12

Thank you, Dobby, that is really useful. DD was a normal delivery and then DS was a crash section, so I wasn't expecting it or prepared for it. Great idea about taking the crochet - I am slightly addicted!

My sickness is back, too, so you have my sympathies. Not sure I can take another 5 weeks of no sleep and throwing up!

sherazade · 23/01/2016 11:26

Hello everyone does anyone mind if I join in again Blush Blush had horrific spd/pgp that resulted in crutches which left me feeling very down about the whole pregnancy but really want to contribute here again missed everyone Blush

docmcstuffins1 · 23/01/2016 13:33

Welcome back Sherazade.
Thanks for all the tips about the hospital bag. It seems everything I read says something different, you wise ladies make much more sense!
