April 2016 babies - 20-week scans, growing bumps and little kicks!

Hi all,

I've started a new thread to take us up to the third trimester.

Hope you are all feeling well. I feel like my bump is a little small and I'm not feeling lots of movement (but this may be due to an anterior placenta). Got my 20-week scan tomorrow so not long to wait to see if everything's ok - it's actually nearly 22 weeks though as baby really wasn't playing ball when we went last week and was hiding with its back to the scanner.

Getting excited that I'm halfway there though...

I've got my redo of the 20 week scan Thursday (at 22+5 weeks). So I'm hoping to see baby OK at that and then feel able to do some more shopping. Haven't done enough research yet to buy things like car seat and pram though, this is my first. But hoping there will be some sales around Christmas?

PurplePoppy17 · 06/12/2015 20:42

I haven't bought anything yet, family keep asking what I want ect but I don't want to think about that until nearer the time. I've got a list of what I'll but expect buggy and car seat ect as there is just so much to chose from but everything else can wait just now.

I've just notice my belly piercing (that I took out over 6 months ago) has started pussing slightly, I'm guessing it's just with it being stretched, but what can I do to stop it getting infected? ConfusedBlush

Unfortunately not knits, my own district mw just changes the subject each time I ask and tells me to talk to the consultant. I have another appointment with the rewind mw during the week and I'll see what options I have then.

As for the hospital bag, the last time I had a vague idea what to put in it, but my waters broke a 37 weeks and dh was out on the piss (was meant to be the last session before ds arrived!!), so I had to pack quickly, and tbh I didn't really take that much and it was ok.

They kept me in for 5 days after birth so I just asked my mum and dh to bring stuff up for me. The most essential thing I didn't bring was nappies, its worth checking whether your hospital provide them or not, as I got a look of distain when I said I didn't have any, and had to send dh to asda to get some!

KnitsBakesAndReads · 07/12/2015 20:01

Welcome tattoo! Hope your scan has gone well today.

Poppy, I've hardly even thought about hospital bag yet! I'm not sure when you're advised to have it ready from, but probably something I should start thinking about...

We haven't actually bought anything for the baby yet, though we've done a bit of window shopping to get an idea of what we might want for the big items like a pram and cot. Think we might get some things in the January sales. We're going to try and sort the baby's room out before we start buying too much I think, as otherwise we've nowhere to store it.

Hope the rewind midwife is a bit more sympathetic MrWriter. I think sometimes community midwives are so busy they just focus on what they "have" to do and don't always have time to help with our concerns. Hopefully your consultant might be a bit more understanding too?

Has anyone else found their appetite has really increased? I'm almost 23 weeks and I feel like I'm starving all the time! Trying to stick to healthy snacks between meals but it's definitely a challenge...

Thank you for starting a new thread!

Oh the dreaded hospital bag! I am so thankful that here in the US all hospitals have well sponsored maternity wards. My hospital is sponsored by J&J for toiletries, P&G for diapers and sanitary products etc. You need to only bring your going home outfit for yourself and the baby. They have everything from Tucks for hemorrhoids to about 10 different creams for BF with everything in between. I had a friend deliver using Medicaid which is for the poor and the hospital loaded them up with the products. They even had sponsored suitcases available for free to carry it all home in.

MrWriter I really feel for you. Again, I am so thankful that I am here in the US with an obn group who LISTEN. It is my third time pregnant and my obn is open to doing what I want to do so long as it doesn't damage the baby or myself. The option of a VBAC is on the table if I want it to be. However, delivery options will change as the pregnancy progresses. IMO it's a healthy attitude to have.

Knits Seriously think about only getting the very basics in before arrival. Only things you need to have are a car seat, a place for the baby to sleep, 4-5 outfits and a box of diapers. I really regret buying the pram before my first arrived. Knowing what I know now I would have gone shopping with DD as a baby and tried them out with her in the car seat. I got the babyjogger citiselect and there are so many little things I have not liked about since the day I started using it once DD had arrived. DD is 4 and we have 3 strollers and I would like to get a Danish pram too as I walk everywhere with the 2 older kids and I want my baby girl to sleep on her back, not in a car seat. I am waiting until the baby arrives before spending the money on the Danish pram!

MazzleDazzle · 08/12/2015 09:18

I second not buying much or worrying too about the hospital bag!

My first was 8 weeks early. All I had was a pram (some take up to 12 weeks to arrive) and a car seat (which was far too heavy. I ended up buying another. 'Twas a costly mistake!) I went into hospital with a nighty, change of clothes and a toiletry bag. It was fine. Most hospitals are near supermarkets - it's easy to send someone out for essentials if need be.

As for nurseries, I'd wait until your baby is here and you know their personality before you dedicate a room to them and nursery furniture is a complete rip off.

If you have the money and love all the baby stuff, then knock yourself out and enjoy splurging Grin...but know that most of what you buy will go completely unused!

brookeberry · 08/12/2015 10:02

Hope the scan went well tattoo.

I'm 21 + 3 and still hesitating about buying anything. DH has bought toys and books (this is our first). I think I need to see more bump!

Happy scans to everyone this week Smile

MrWriter · 08/12/2015 10:43

thank you all, I'm seeing her later in the week and hopefully I can report back some cs news!

I only bought a moses basket and pram about a week before ds turned up, he was 2 weeks early.

I got a quinny buzz so the maxi cosi seat could slide into it from the car, though ds was tiny so he wasn't that heavy for lifting in and out of the car with the seat.

PurplePoppy17 · 08/12/2015 14:31

That's me just out of the doctors, I have ANOTHER urine infection and ANOTHER thrush infection... Sad only two weeks ago since last time. I think the antibiotics I had were t strong enough. Feel like rubbish. Anyone else had a few urine infections along the way? I'm not 22 weeks and this will be my third overall

tattooedmummy · 08/12/2015 18:44

Yep sorry thought I had posted scan went well on Monday .. Happy active healthy baby girl

Rinnyx · 08/12/2015 19:03

I'm going to order my pram&carseat in next week, would of done sooner as its really reduced on one website and only about 5 left but I've held off as moving Friday.

Hospital bag, I'm not going to bother til I'm about 6 weeks off I think.
With my last 2 I didn't need half the crap I packed Grin
Just gonna make sure I've got going home outfit, blanket, nappies and wipes for baby
For me, make up, hair brush and change of clothes a must and lots of pads for down below Blush and pads for leaking milk
I've never fussed about taking magazines, music, food, etc like a lot of books, websites suggest

Want2bSupermum · 08/12/2015 20:24

purple I had an urine infection with my second pregnancy. She didn't treat it with antibiotics but had me drink a supplement, I think it was cranberry extract but I am not 100% sure. After that for a week I had to drink 3 liters of water a day. My obn was very much not in favour of medicine for a first time offence. She had a word about avoiding thrush by restricting caffeine, getting enough sleep and avoiding yeast (basically bread).

helensburgh · 09/12/2015 21:46

Hi havnt been on for ages.
I'm due right end April so 20 week scan next week.

I'm struggling with anxiety. Hoping it's a passing phase!

KnitsBakesAndReads · 09/12/2015 23:09

Thanks to everyone for the advice about hospital bags and baby shopping. I'm trying to keep in mind that lots of lists of "essentials" for a new baby are probably written by companies trying to sell you something!

I hope you get some antibiotics that help this time Purple, and that you're feeling better soon.

Congratulations on your scan tattoo. Have you started thinking about names now you know you're having a girl?

Sorry to hear you're struggling with anxiety helen. Do you think you could ask your midwife or GP for help, or are you managing okay for now? I've found mindfulness is really helpful for anxiety (though not specifically pregnancy related). I'd be happy to share some more info if you're interested at all.

Wait4nothing · 10/12/2015 10:39

Had scan this morning - all fine so happy here. Didn't find out the sex. Better get back to work!

5madthings · 10/12/2015 11:02

Ooh place marking on new thread.

Lovely to hear of all the good scans and see pics.

I am 23 plus two or three days? All good here, getting a bump and this baby is a real wriggle bum. The other madthings have now felt it move.

Re buying stuff I have bought three baby grows, I found a little bag of special bits I had put away from the other madthings with just a few vests etc. I have a bugaboo frog we bought when ds2(13) was little, so it's 12 yrs old, used for four kids and will use it again. It's been shoved in a wardrobe for ages so will need a wash but all.the covers cone off etc and it has a flat carrycot for first few months so baby is flat and cosy. I lent my slings to a friend who will send them back before bump arrives and my sister is giving me a carseat.

We give pretty much everything away as we stopped using it with madthing5, I didn't give the pram away as it felt like part of the family.. So glad now! I will start looking a bit more after Xmas. Will just be getting basics.

Re drinking I had a very small cider when our for a meal for friends bday, pear cider like 3% and it was a very small glass about 4oz like a little baby bottle? will probably do the same at Xmas and for my bday in Jan. It was really nice to just have that, I didn't feel like I wanted any more and had it with food so didn't feel the effect of the alcohol. I wouldn't really drink regularly, but I don't when not pregnant either ie I don't like wine so never drink that it tends to be when out for a meal with friends etc.

FatimaLovesBread · 10/12/2015 11:10

Has anyone got a huge bump? I can barely fit in to a jacket that I managed to wear at 33 weeks with DD. Scared I'll be massive.

I've got a birth debrief from DD with the consultant midwife this afternoon, feeling a bit nervous and my heads a bit jumbled but hoping I feel a lot clearer afterwards and can start thinking about this birth.

Handed my mat b1 and maternity notice in at work yesterday!

ComeLuckyApril · 10/12/2015 16:20

I had my rescan today and all is well with the baby :)

PurplePoppy17 · 10/12/2015 20:01

Anyone have a good site for cheap maternity clothes? I don't feel comfortable wearing normal jeans or leggings ect, they just don't seem to fit properly.

ComeLuckyApril · 10/12/2015 20:39

Most of my clothes have come as ebay secondhand clothes (from other people who've finished with them rather than pro sellers). I usually look for UK only stuff ending soon and only bid up to £5-6 (less postage).

Want2bSupermum · 11/12/2015 02:25

Purple My maternity stuff is from pea in the pod (only purchased on sale as $$$$$), motherhood maternity, GAP and Walmart. For everyday maternity wear you cannot beat Walmart which are the maternity clothes from Asda. I got lovely jeans when I was pregnant with DS for $16 at Walmart and they are better than the $200+ jeans I had delivered from Nordstrom. I wear my old yoga pants a lot too. They are nice and stretchy soft cotton. I bought them over 10 years ago from Sweaty Betty.

MazzleDazzle · 11/12/2015 06:49

I don't think any of the supermarkets do maternity clothes here.

The maternity clothes I've bought have been over priced, poor quality and worst of all, a terrible fit!

Bought jeans from New Look that won't stay up (they're over the bump ones!) as well as a few bits and pieces from Next, Seraphine and Jojo-Maman-Bebe. They've also been a waste of money. Haven't been able to find trousers at all, so I've been living in ordinary leggings and tunics. I just bought knitted ones a size or two bigger than normal. Great for day to day, but can't wear them to work though.

If I keep growing at the rate I am, heaven knows what I'll be wearing by Spring Blush.

5madthings · 11/12/2015 07:24

mazzle asda do maternity clothes, you may have to order online but they do do them.

I have one pair of maternity jeans so far from h&m that are very comfy. Plus some jeggings from m&s and am wearing tunic style tops or shirts from h&m, white stuff etc.

FatimaLovesBread · 11/12/2015 08:47

My fave maternity clothes so far are my jeans from H&m over the bump ones, they stay up and don't go baggy. Tooshop thick maternity leggings, the ones with seams so you can't see through them. And a stretchy tunic thing from New Look that I got from asos.

Keep your eye on asos as they normally have a sale running up to Christmas.

I desperately need a coat, tried a parka in h&m that was recommended but the fabric was too stuff so it made me look huge!

5madthings · 11/12/2015 09:51

fatima my maternity jeans are from h&m, skinny leg over the bump ones, I wasn't sure when I bought them as I don't normally like over the bump style but they are fab. I ride my bike everyday and they are so comfy and aren't getting saggy at all.

I will have a look in toyshop today, need to go to town for Xmas stocking bits....

My coat still fits, it's a north f'ace winter waterproof/windproof thing... Once I outgrow it a friend has a non maternity but size 16? Coat she is going to loan me, same kind of thing waterproof/windproof not fashionable but for the school run on the bike I really don't care!
