Not started a new thread before, so I'll give it a go....

I agree, the Internet is going to attract people who've suffered losses, trauma etc who are looking for support so bound to be some things on it that are terrifying. DH begs me to stop googling but it's so tempting when I'm in a moment of panic!!!

Everyone's different about how they would feel with an early scan, personally I am having one because if something is wrong I would rather know now than waiting another 4 weeks. Even if I was to get good news on Friday it wouldn't stop me worrying but I think it's the right thing for me. I am actually terrified tho, trying desperately just to not think about it until the morning it happens.

JoannaZZ · 27/07/2015 11:40

Qfor if you have a scan at 8 weeks and it shows a heartbeat you have a 98% chance of a continuing pregnancy (source). I'll be very happy if my scan tomorrow at 8+4 is ok!

Also been reading about all the things that can go wrong, not exactly helping me stay calm Confused. We should all try not to take unreliable information too seriously, it's much better to look at the statistics from reputable websites. There's no point worrying about the really rare things that can go wrong!

Indomitable · 27/07/2015 11:44

maybe that was the logic I was going with. So I was surprised when the mw said it (though this is the maternity unit that advocated homeopathy last time).

Herewego that site is really good. I've enjoyed seeing the risk tick down. I prefer to reverse it though and think "today there is an 87% chance everything will be fine".

Herewegoagain31 · 27/07/2015 11:51

Yes indomitable that's a good way of looking at it! I have been very reassured by looking actual scientific studies up just now. I'm still worried - I think it is right to be a little bit cautious until a healthy baby is placed in your arms - but it does help put it in perspective

Herewegoagain31 · 27/07/2015 11:52

And this is reassuring for those having 7 or 8 week scans and seeing a good heartbeat -

After heartbeat is detected, risk of miscarriage is 9.4% at 6wks; 4.2% at 7wks; 1.5% at 8wks; 0.5% at 9wks

To estimate the risk of miscarriage among asymptomatic women after a prenatal visit between 6 and 11 weeks of gestation where proof of fetal viability of a singleton was obtained by office ultrasonography at the same visit. METHODS: Those recruited were 697 asymptomatic women who attended their first antenatal visit between 6 (+2 days) and 11(+6 days) weeks of gestation, where evidence of fetal cardiac activity of a singleton was obtained by office ultrasonography. RESULTS: The risk of miscarriage among the entire cohort was 11 of 696 (1.6%). The risk fell rapidly with advancing gestation; 9.4% at 6 (completed) weeks of gestation, 4.2% at 7 weeks, 1.5% at 8 weeks, 0.5% at 9 weeks and 0.7% at 10 weeks.

Ooh that's great, Herewego.

Been doing some vitamin research: These Boots own brand ones have 50mg of ginger extract which they say is equivalent to 1g ginger (the dose given in all the studies I read). There's ginger in a couple of others but only 10mg.

I don't know whether I should get the ones that come with fish oil capsules - I don't eat fish at all, and very little meat. But I do eat eggs and olive oil. Do I need it? (The though of fish oil grosses me out!).

Think I'll go for the boots own ones. All 3 reviews on their site are good!

QforCucumber · 27/07/2015 12:06

Herewegoagain that link won't work on my work computer, I'll have a look at it later.

I know the reductions in risk, I think after previous mmc and having no idea anything was wrong I'm looking for things to stop me getting excited.
I think I'll book it for the 9th - 8+5 that day, dp offering to pay for it so might as well stop panicking.

Herewegoagain31 · 27/07/2015 12:25

Q I can completely understand, it must be so hard if you've had a precious mmc. I would definitely get an early scan if I was in your position too, just to put my mind at rest, and if you get a good strong heartbeat on your scan at 8 weeks I think that'll be a very positive sign (based on the data from studies) that hopefully all will be well

Kittykitty05 · 27/07/2015 12:40

indomitable my seven seas vitamins have ginger in, and so far very little nausea, so could be helping. Tho taking my kids for a bracing seafront stroll this morning was fine till we hit the fish market, then I certainly felt a bit queasy!

With the early scan thing, having had 2 mmc both of which died at 8+5, I'm wary of taking a good 8 week scan as a good sign. I've asked if I can have a scan this Friday as I'll be 9 weeks and I think, for me, being past that very significant 8+5 wil be helpful.
My midwife last time tho said she doesn't breathe a sigh of relief for her ladies till after the anomaly scan, which I think is probably about right!

Me624 · 27/07/2015 12:41

The sonography at my private scan told me the same thing - that a heartbeat seen at 8 weeks means the risk of miscarriage between now and 12 weeks is very very low. I feel very reassured now by having had my scan and quite happy about the prospect of cracking on for another four weeks, whereas before (esp due to my lack of symptoms) I was anxious. Having the early scan was definitely the right decision for me, but everyone is different.

marmitemofo · 27/07/2015 12:49

indomitable if you don't want fish oil you can get vegan omega 3 tablets which are from seaweed (I think) which I take.

got into work an hour and a half late today as couldn't cope with life this morning. have literally sat at my desk achieving nothing as I feel so awful. I should have just stayed at home but I have a deadline for Friday and I absolutely need to get work done. also DP has taken my laptop with him on his work trip so no working from home for me this week, argh.

I told family this weekend that I'm pregnant. everyone was very happy (of course) but now panicking I've jinxed it. I know there's no such thing and I'm being ridiculous. I'm still feeling awful and sick so taking that as a good sign, even though I know things could still go wrong. ugh, I hate how uncertain and frightening the first trimester is!

QforCucumber · 27/07/2015 12:58

Thanks for the calming down guys, need a good talking to sometimes - going to book the scan for 8+5 and just go from there.

marmite I've had to tell my line manager at work today as I keep running off to be sick, she seems as excited as I am haha. sometimes it's nice to share the burden.

My app has informed me that on xmas dayish our little blueberries will be the size of cauliflowers, that has made me smile today.

Indomitable · 27/07/2015 13:05

Xmas cauliflowers! Grin

Thanks marmite, I'll have a look for the veggie ones.

maybebabybee · 27/07/2015 13:10

Quite concerned I'm not feeling sick, you lot all seem to be suffering terribly!

I know I should just feel lucky but it's freaking me out!

julesldn · 27/07/2015 13:10

For those asking about vitamins/folic acid - I went to my chemist and there's a surestart scheme (I think that's what it's called anyway!) and I got my folic acid with vitamin D for freeeeee. Think it might have a few other things in too but isn't a multivitamin as such.

Maybe Google it and check if you guys can get it as the thought of buying £7 packs of vitamins made me want to cry a bit haha

julesldn · 27/07/2015 13:11

Maybe - I've spoken to a few family members and friends who have said they didn't have sickness at all through their pregnancies and have healthy grown up children now! I do honestly think it's pot luck - please don't worry! Xx

Kittykitty05 · 27/07/2015 14:15

maybe I'm the same, I feel very grateful for no sickness but it's still a worry as having symptoms logically means everything is ok. However, I've had a 3 pregnancies with sickness and 3 without now (nice and even!). Two of the bad ones I know were with my boys, one good one was my dd. so I think I react differently for boys and girls, as do many women. My theory for today tho is what will be will be, so I will be pleased I can carry on fairly normally for dd and ds. I so don't want them to know till I have lots of positive results as they went through so much pain when we lost their brother in March.

Cherrytoes · 27/07/2015 14:18

Maybe, my mum didn't know she was pregnant with me until 4 months gone (so no sickness) and my sister in law had 3 healthy pregnancies with no sickness so I'm thinking (hoping) it doesn't mean anything if you're not being sick! And if I was I would only be worrying about something else ha ha

maybebabybee · 27/07/2015 14:24

I should be feeling sick - apparently you're meant to be more predisposed to nausea during pregnancy if you get travel sick and if your mum got sick with her pregnancies. Well, I get majorly travel sick and my mum had horrendous sickness when pregnant with me.

But never mind, I shall look upon it as a blessing! The fact that I've seen the HB on a scan is a good thing.

Cherrytoes · 27/07/2015 14:39

I get awful travel sickness too! And I can't even get on a boat :|
The fact you've seen the heartbeat is amazing try and focus on that if you can

Q, Can't wait to have a cauliflower! :)

Missdee2014 · 27/07/2015 14:40

For those worrying about multi vitamins. Speak to your midwife, my midwife gave me the correct ones at my booking in appt. I'm in Scotland though so may be different.

maybebabybee · 27/07/2015 15:23

Oooh, nice to hear from a fellow travel sickness sufferer :) I usually end up feeling like a six year old!

sherazade · 27/07/2015 15:58

The thought of a cauliflower sized fetus has actually cheered me up

lilmisshopeful · 27/07/2015 17:07

Wow just catching up after work. Busy thread today!

maybe I'm trying to tell myself that about the 8 week scan. Our scan (at 7+5) on Friday was all ok and the sonographer was all happy and full of congratulations. I had to remind her we've had 3 mcs before and ask her to double check measurements to reassure us. Then she said generally if things are ok at this stage the chances are high they'll stay ok. (With our mcs early scans around now showed things had already gone wrong.) Long way of saying Q try not to worry!

On pg vits, I hope my supplement thing includes vit d. Must check tonight. Incidentally, could be just me but when I was pg with dd I found that pregnacare gave me terrible constipation (sorry tmi). Last thing I wanted esp when I started to feel really big! I switched to a brand called Solgar from the health food shop and didn't have any problems with that one. Taking it again for this pg.

Cherrytoes · 27/07/2015 17:38

I'm using up the stack of Pregnacare Conception ones I had stockpiled (3 for 2 at boots ha ha) as I never expected to fall pregnant! Think they're ok as they've got the right amount of folic acid along with other vitamins. I'm too scared to buy the actual pregnancy ones in case I jinx anything.

Yes I know this is ridiculous...what is it about early pregnancy that turns normal woman into superstitious wrecks!!
