Is anyone else contemplating a home birth purely because they don't think they'll make it to the hospital on time and the idea of giving birth by the side of the road is mortifying? DS (DC2) came rather quickly, less then two and a half hours from first contraction to baby in arms. Midwives said I was lucky to make it to the hospital in time at all. DH really doesn't like the idea of it just in-case something goes wrong.

elephantfeet · 21/06/2015 22:32

Peggy mine is on the 6th tooSmile

Mumof1sofar · 21/06/2015 22:42

There is no way I'd risk a home birth & tbh if it's your first baby I would strongly recommend having it in a hospital or at least a birthing centre attached to a hospital. I've heard too many instances of something going wrong in labour then the desperate mum being put in the back of an ambulance & driven off to hospital, wasting valuable time. 2nd/3rd/etc. baby I think is a bit different as you know what to expect. I would always want to give birth in the hospital (1st time round I wanted a water birth in a birthing centre but it didn't quite go as planned... I will say no more!)

peggysue82 · 21/06/2015 22:42

It can't come quick enough can it elephant?! I think it will make it all seem so much more real.

This is the problem I have Bopoity, DS2 arrived in under 2 hours and we are a 1/2 hr drive (on a good day) from the hospital. I'm really not keen on a home birth, but wouldn't want to be giving birth on the side of the M5 either Wink

TeddyRuxpinsSmile · 21/06/2015 22:50

I had a planned home birth in water for dd and it was brilliant. We had a doula there- thank god as the midwife didn't believe I was really in labour (despite me being practically delirious, and going on and on about how I'd had curry and was worried if poo in the pool agh- I didn't, what a win!) and didn't turn up until 15 mins before she was born. The gas and air didn't turn up until 15 mins after Shock
The hospital was 3 mins drive away which made it a much easier decision- but the actual facts on home births, especially for babies 2 onwards are very comforting.

IslaMann · 21/06/2015 22:52

Peggysue are you planning on giving birth at The new hospital or the one in the middle of town?

NoMontagues · 21/06/2015 22:54

peggy wait, what?

Who says 3rd births are the hardest!?! Shock

Lilymog · 22/06/2015 06:52

So that's me, raffertys and Charlotte with scans today, anyone else? Will let. You know how I get on, going to the EPU for 10.50am. Wish me luck x

AbFab86 · 22/06/2015 07:08

Good luck with your scans lily, Raffertys and Charlotte. I'll be in your position this time next week. Not really had any proper nausea as such but I'm absolutely exhausted and my nipples have taken on a life of their own. Really hoping that means something and the brown spotting and lower back pain don't :(

raviolig · 22/06/2015 07:21

Good luck with your scans lily, raffertys and Charlotte.

3rd births are the hardest? How can that be, please don't tell me that!
My dd's birth was not good at all but then I had the most peaceful relaxing birth with ds. Standing up for most of labour then in a pool to push. I would love to be able to do it like that again.
I don't fancy a home birth. After my daughter I would be worried I would need intervention then I had a bad bleed after ds and needed complicated stitching. I did ask for an epidural both times, with dd the anaesthetist arrived and then went on his lunch break. Then by the time he got back I was 9cm and he said it was not worth it as I would be finished before it kicked in. With ds they basically just said no because they were too busy. I was expecting not to get it so it was easier. I haven't even had my first scan yet and I am thinking about labour!!

rallytog1 · 22/06/2015 07:32

I thought it was just 3rd dcs that were the hardest generally Wink I imagine giving birth a third time would be much easier.

I was strongly encouraged to have a home birth with my first, and a SO glad I resisted the pressure and had her in hospital. Will save the horror story for another time but I'd strongly encourage first timers to go for a hospital.

Good luck for your scans lily, Raffertys and charlotte.

RattyCatty · 22/06/2015 07:52

Good luck today lily raffertys and charlotte

StockingFullOfCoal · 22/06/2015 07:54

3rd DC - my labour lasted 40 mins. Contractions for about 4 hours prior to waters breaking but barely felt them. Waters broke at 1am she was born 1:40am. I was having a shower by 2:30am and on the ward by 3:30am.

peggysue82 · 22/06/2015 07:56

Good luck to everyone having scans today.

Isla - I had DS1 and DS2 at Southmead so had assumed I would be heading back there. Although Cossham looks lovely if I could be brave enough to think I could do it without an epidural.

Ravioli - I haven't had my scan yet either (not even got a date). All of my friends who have had a third seem to be telling me the same thing...DC1 labour is long, DC2 labour is the best/quickest, DC3 labour is the most difficult/awkward Hmm

peggysue82 · 22/06/2015 07:57

Ohhh stocking that gives me hope!! Wink

WouldRatherHaveCake · 22/06/2015 08:04

I'm tempted by a home birth this time, but in reality it will probably be at hospital as last time was traumatic. I do live next door to the hospital though so I can labour at home for as long as possible

LazyRohazy · 22/06/2015 08:16

Good luck today lily, raffertys, charlotte!

I would like to have a home birth, but I'm high BMI so am not allowed. I don't really mind; my hospital delivery with DD was straight-forward and I'm only 5 mins from the hospital in the car anyway.

Good luck to those with scans!
purdie, it is my intention to get medication today!

haquoi123 · 22/06/2015 08:44

Just rang the GP and they wouldn't even give me an appointment for the morning sickness, just the GP will ring me! And the brown bleeding has got a bit more, still spotting but slightly more. I've got open access to EPU so I can call them but part of me thinks that there's no point, che sara sara... Am I being stupid?

Mumof1sofar · 22/06/2015 08:54

Haquoi that is terrible- you are a pregnant woman who wants to see her GP - they can't stop you! Are the people on the receptionist's desk qualified medics? Course not! I'd ring back.

Good luck to those having scans today.

Mawsymoo · 22/06/2015 08:57

I'm in a taxi on the way to hospital bleeding heavily. It started out of nowhere this morning and is out of control as I'm soaking through pads in minutes. Had to tell 2 colleagues and leave a client meeting, timing is a nightmare. Will have to ring my boss now. Feel numb and very alone. Best of luck to all, think I'll be leaving this thread now.

TeddyRuxpinsSmile · 22/06/2015 09:00

Good luck scan ladies!

Rufus200 · 22/06/2015 09:12

mawsy fingers crossed for you, maybe it is just the bleeding that the scanner said would happen as you had a subchorionic haemorrhage?

Mumof1sofar · 22/06/2015 09:13

So sorry mawsy. I've got everything crossed for you. Thanks
