Hey gaggiagirl, been a while. How are you doing? Eek! That third trimester. Wonder what delights it holds...

So, had an impromptu visit to our maternity ward last night. A v painful tummy and quick call to the midwife resulted in three hours sat in the maternity assessment unit, a trace and an internal examination! Shock All a bit OTT if you ask me (baby fine, got a small hernia in my abdo muscles) but I guess it's good they were thorough. And hearing the heartbeat and movements on the trace was kind of worth it in itself! Whole experience confirmed thee things for me;

  1. I do not like consultant obstetricians. (problems with authority? me? not much)
  2. a speculum without lube is not ok, i don't care if it makes it a little harder to see. manners!
  3. I would much rather have my baby at home or in a MLU than spend hours wired up to all sorts with every tom dick and harry poking around without so much as a 'by your leave'. Is a hello too much to ask for before some one sticks something up you? Maybe I'm old fashioned.

Rant over!

Worried I'll chicken out nearer the time but our hospital is a grim place, I really don't want to end up there if I can avoid it. Any thoughts on where you'll have your babbas?

gaggiagirl · 07/07/2015 08:57

hearth that sounds awful! Its great that you and baby are ok though.
My hospital is grim too and like an oven.

thanks gaggia dont think its sunk in yet. she was on her own so lots of sorting out to do. 51 years old - so sad!

oh heck that does not sound like a pleasant experience and i agree some manners wouldny have gone amiss cheeky sods.

were at hospital this aft, never seen back of it lately and wondering how dp will cope. the last time we were there onlybloodythursday was when his dm slipped away. anyway its to see the prosthetic limb person. cant see us taking much in today.

BeautifulBatman · 07/07/2015 10:59

Good luck Ginger, hope it goes well x

gingerbreadmam · 07/07/2015 11:18

thankyou. will try and update later if i actually take anything in.

its strange with all the what ifs i feel like we should have seen the paediatric orthopaedic first to discuss when the amputation would be done and where abouts from (i assume above the knee). also whether the flexed leg will affect any of that.

have the physio friday about the clubfeet too but again i think they will want to talk to us about ponsetti but best case scenario bad leg will be shorter than good leg and ponsetti requires a bar to keep feet in place which he wont be able to have because of the difference in length and if he has to have amputation quickly because of flexed leg then he definitely wont be able to have the bar. confusing.

gingerbreadmam · 07/07/2015 14:28

not a lot to report from that just that we would probably be looking at an extension prosthetic in the first instance that would fit over his poorly leg and look a lot like a normal one.

already had an idea about that although until he gets here we wont know how bad the leg is or whether it is fixed becauase he doesnt have a knee joint.

hearthattack · 07/07/2015 17:33

Blimey, you must be sick of the site of that hospital ginger.

So much to take in already. Great that you're getting the expert opinion good and early though. Bet you're doing an amazing job of it all [hugs].

gingerbreadmam · 07/07/2015 19:51

i am. sick of the sight and sick of the parking charges Confused

worth it to get the information tho i guess and the lady we saw was so lovely. she said she would like to see us when baby is 6 weeks old 'to meet him' which is a very lovely way of putting it ha!

hope everyone else is well.

batfish · 07/07/2015 20:19

gaggiagirl · 09/07/2015 10:02

Yes we have ginger its brilliant! The prices are brilliant. The restaurant at our hospital is really good but pretty expensive even with staff discount.

Anybody else having Brixton hicks yet? I don't remember having them until the final six weeks with my first two babies but I have been having them for the past few days and I'm only 26+1.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 09/07/2015 12:40

Hi again all.

Sorry to hear about your visit to the hospital hearth, glad all was well in the end (despite the no lube on the speculum Shock)
I'm after a home birth this time but after having a chat with the midwife, who says I'll need to clear it with the consultant, won't make a fuss if I can't. They think I'm at a higher risk of a PPH because I'm para 3+. No other risks to consider though, so fingers crossed. We live 5mins from the hospital too, which is a bonus. We'll just have to wait and see.

Sounds like you have so much information to absorb ginger. You sound like you've coped amazingly and should be so proud.

Super I've been having them for ages. Loads of them. I'm the same as you, can't really remember having them so soon with my others.

I'm 28 weeks tomorrow and going for one of those 3d scans. Am very excited to see her little face. Our 2 year old is coming along too so hopefully we get a good view.
Feeling very pleased with myself too, just bought the reusable nappies and wipes I've had my eye on, never thought I'd get so excited over something a baby poos in!! Grin

BeautifulBatman · 09/07/2015 12:46

Fern I hope you enjoy your 3d scan tomorrow! I think they tend to make babies look like a squashed Morph in photos but on the screen it's amazing. You get them as standard here. Here's mine from the weekend. The pic is rotated left for some reason bit it's sucking it's thumb Grin

hearthattack · 09/07/2015 12:49

Oooh, a 3D scan! How exciting. I'd love one, it seems kind of odd that there's no more scans now and we won't see baby until he's on the outside.

Fingers crossed for your home birth Fern. Whenever I've spoken to a Dr or Consultant about it they seem to assume I've got some rigid, idealised vision of what my birth will be like because I'd rather stay at home if I can. I'll go with the flow if advice is to the contrary, and might change my mind at the last minute anyway! Like you said, we'll see.

What do these Braxton Hicks feel like? I've had weird pains/aches in my tummy on and off for a week. It seems to move around, and sometimes my tummy is hard in places. This morning it's been all down my left side, kind of under my bump, and if I poke it it's like rock Confused.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 09/07/2015 13:03

Thank you both!!

Beautiful what a gorgeous picture! It sounds stupid but I think it will kind of make it feel real all over again! I know I've got this wriggling going on in me but when I see her face, she almost becomes a person!

Super you're so right. My midwife looked almost frightened when I stated taking about it but I told her that I'll ultimately do what's best for the baby and my health and won't put up some fight in the hope of 'perfection' and she seemed a lot more up for it, especially now it's confirmed I don't have diabetes! (I think she was secretly hoping I did have it at first!)

My braxton hicks just feel like my tum going really hard all over. Like I'd squeezed my abs iyswim. Sometimes, my bump gets hard in one place, it's always a bum push from baby!

FernGullysWoollyPully · 09/07/2015 13:04

Sorry hearth I called you by the wrong name. Duh! Blush

Superexcited · 09/07/2015 13:21

The braxton hicks feels like the whole tummy going tight and hard for 20 or so seconds and then the tightness being released.

I have had the tightening in just one area too but think that is just baby turning about and being busy.

hearthattack · 09/07/2015 13:34

Aaagh, beautiful, that is amazing! What a cutie! I love the nose, I seem to have an obsession with babies noses.

I think there's an automatic leap in people's minds from home birth to super hippy-dippy earth mother types. Reality is I want to be at home mostly so I can eat what I want and watch Netflix when the hell I want to!

hearthattack · 09/07/2015 13:36

I love bum pushes. Pretty sure it's not that that's hurting. Probably just wind, knowing me Blush

BeautifulBatman · 09/07/2015 13:40

Omg, hearth, the nose... on the screen, not on this pic particularly, it's nose is just perfect, just like it's daddy's. Not mine thank goodness!

hearthattack · 09/07/2015 13:50
Grin

Your post actually made me make the biggest grin. Again.

Grin

My dp has a very 'strong' nose. I love it. It took him a few decades years to grow into (I've seen the photos). I'm secretly hoping our teeny one has a massive hooter just like his Daddy.

Also, just babies noses. eeeeek! makes me wiggle my toes and make girly noises. Blush
