Felt we might need a new thread to get through the night feeds and labours!

I have a lamp that has a buoy on dimmer. Keep it on low all night so I can see what I'm doing without having to keep turning it off and on. Smile Going to attempt the basket... Already have DD1 in the bed with usHmm

FiRaffe · 06/05/2015 08:06

Hope you all got some sleep. DS definitely had tanked up and slept for ages, which was nice. He seemed to only be grumble at 6 because he was cold and fell asleep on me as soon as I gave him a cuddle. The gro-egg says it was 19.7 though when I picked him up... hmm. What temperatures are others keeping their rooms at?

RL20 · 06/05/2015 08:27

FiRaffe I haven't got a room temperature thing as I would probably drive myself insane with it. Although the midwife did recommend them. I think in the winter time is when I would get one. The health visitor said to me yesterday that babies prefer to be cooler than warm. Don't know what to think to that though - if only DS could tell me! Grin.
Our flat is quite warm especially in the bedroom with the door shut, so have been opening the window very slightly with the blind down, he's in Moses basket with just a sheet on the mattress and one blanket. I put him in a short sleeve sleepsuit, sometimes with socks, and he nearly always kicks the blanket off without fail. Don't know whether he just gets pissed off with it or whether he's genuinely warm

kismac · 06/05/2015 08:54

We can only get our room to 18.

Nipple shields - good idea. She fed pretty much every housing last night and I hurt so much. Still no let down so boob are so round and think that's why we are struggling to latch.

kismac · 06/05/2015 08:54

Hour not housing. Duh.

BrixtonBunny · 06/05/2015 09:02

Fi we're terrified of overheating DD as it's a risk factor for SIDS so we're keeping the bedroom between 16-20 (also using the trusty gro-egg - I love it!), it's usually between 17-19 but more like 17 by early hours of morning. In winter we'll probably whack heating on thermostat to keep it around 18. We've been putting her to sleep in a long-sleeve sleep suit with a cellular blanket folded once, and she seems ok like that.

Lauren82000 · 06/05/2015 09:12

I have no idea what temp out room is probably warmer than they recommend. I feel the cold so even if it says the room is 21 I think it's a bit nippy. everytime I've checked DDs chest she seems just right so perhaps she is like me? She has a vest, sleep suit and blanket on.

PenguinPoser · 06/05/2015 09:23

Our room is about 19-20degrees. Gets warmer in summer. Put dd in vest sleepsuit and one blanket folded once. Her hands are often cold and since having her I've been cold in the bedroom despite normally liking the room about 16degrees!

Day 3/4 baby blues on day 6. Thought i'd got away without this. Damn it. Sitting having a wee cry whilst feeding. Oh the joys.

daholster · 06/05/2015 09:44

Well he slept from quarter to 5 and woke at 6 (argh!), didn't eat much and wouldn't settle so I let him sleep next to me in bed. Of course I slept rather fitfully... But I suppose a fitful hr and a half is better than none at all!

He's v snuffly and doing lots of episodes of not able to breathe business which is becoming a bit stressful.

My boobs are really ready for him to have a good feed now...!!! Anyone else fed up of leaking milk EVERYWHERE half the time?! I seem to live with a constantly sticky tummy and ruined clothes if I dare to remove breast pads (which do get uncomfy)... And woe betife me if I lean over or dd comes for a hug or ds cries...

Ds had a horrible screaming reflux episode again yesterday, brought me to tears. Raw bleeding bum too poor thing. Then accidentally had buttered cabbage at tea (dh said he told me but it wasn't clear...) So a bit gutted. Still, decided I need to cut out processed food. I'm going to go back to basic food, meat, veg, no spices, nothing processed, homemade bread. Going to plan a menu and start tomorrow. Banana and honey for breakfast, coconut milk (and honey mixed and heated in microwave is YUMMY), homemade bread, maybe I will stretch to Pure sunflower spread so I can have something for bread and to fry in/bake with. Fruit (organic, or those I can peel) and porridge with coconut milk. I don't like almond milk, I've tried and tried!

So, trying to see it as a challenge and to help weight loss, no non processed sweets available! Just not sure what to drink aside from water and fruit tea (which I don't like) and peppermint tea...

daholster · 06/05/2015 09:45

Oh and I'd rather have no light cinnamon but I don't feel up to doing it all in the dark! Its a bedside lamp but I think I need Adler one.

kismac · 06/05/2015 10:53

Re nipple shields that should have been a question. Does anyone think it'd be good to get some?

smogsville · 06/05/2015 11:05

kismac I used them with DD and they were brilliant until nipples hardened up! Haven't needed them this time around.

ChickenMe · 06/05/2015 11:52

I posted on FB kismac - when my milk came in my boobs were so engorged the nipple was stretched flat. I sat in the bath and cried (prob day 4 so where you are now - hugs) Anyway (I was in hosp for a week) the MW gave me a nipple shield as there was no way DD was going to latch on. I expressed a bit off and got DD to latch on with the shield. We have used them ever since. I love them as my nipples are small.

Re GroEggs mine is doing me in. It's normally 19-21 ish but a few times it's been a bit cold to me but the Egg says it's ok but surely the baby must be cold!? I mean, if I'm wearing a fleece in bed then DD must be cold esp as she always kicks off her covers!! So I put another vest on her. I think if you don't have an Egg just trust your instincts-I'm happy if she feels pleasantly warm.

In the car though she gets very warm the past few days. I bought some sun shades and put the ac on plus left passenger window a bit open. When I got her out she was boiling despite wearing just vest and her outfit no cardi or cover. Anyone else?

Jetpackplease · 06/05/2015 12:09

Hey all, sorry haven't checked in for ages - how do tiny babies take up so much time?! Congrats brum, fizzy, kismac and everyone else who has given birth since I last posted.

DS is now 17 days old and a boob fiend. He is feeding every 1.5-2.5 hours, day and night. He has put on a pound in six days and I'm exhausted. The sleep deprivation is brutal. I spend most of my awake time wondering when I will next be able to sleep. I have started expressing but yesterday sobbed when I came down from a nap and found DH giving DS his first bottle
Blush Now I'm just struggling to find time to express - I feed him, wind him, change him, put him down, then by the time he is asleep and I sterilise the pump, etc, he is awake again and wants feeding! Or I'm just too tired and prioritise trying to nap instead. How are others managing expressing?

I've also hardly managed to get out of the house. It's just such a palaver getting him fed, changed, etc, and then I get anxious about him waking up and wanting to be fed again. It's a bloody steep learning curve.

FiRaffe · 06/05/2015 12:16

Can't say i've noticed a problem in the car but we don't go out in it much.

We have the thermostat (in the lounge) on 15, and seem to spend a lot of time appeasing the monkey god as DH calls it (we've got the monkey shell for our groegg!) Will continue to trust my judgement as it feels chilly in there to me too!

The diet sounds amazing daholster. How you have energy to make bread too is amazing. I'm done in after walking round to the weigh in this morning!!

kismac · 06/05/2015 12:24

Thanks Chicken. Going to hopefully pop out to Mothercare to get some nipple shields today. My boobs are such a mess. I've got my mum (ex midwife) and auntie (currently a midwife) coming to visit tomorrow which Im dreading as I feel they are going to tell me off. But midwife said latch was fine in hospital.

LittleGreyCatwithapinkcollar · 06/05/2015 12:36

I know what you mean about the car chicken. I do worry she's getting warm while we're out in it as I dress her for outside then the car is warmer, but she'll need the warmth when we get out in the pram at the other end...

I've just been using the thermostat thermometer so far. It's a mobile one so I just keep it where she is... though last night she was in vest, sleepsuit and 1tog sleeping bag in moses basket and was clearly too cold despite it telling me it was 19.5 degrees...

cinnamongreyhound · 06/05/2015 13:11

I had a Groegg with ds2, I gave it to a friend and didn't get it back so haven't bought another. I am cold when I get up in the night but once I start feeding him I warm up a bit. We're still snuggling under our duvet and the recommendation is that baby has an extra layer of clothing than you so I'm assuming we're ok on the temperature front. His room is the warmest in the house but the radiator doesn't ever come on to compensate for that.

I used nipple shields for a couple of days with ds1 and they made all the difference. Worth a try if you're struggling and even if you spend the rest of your bf life using them it's hardly terrible!!

We all have teary days kismac and are further along than you!!

I keep meaning to ask, those that are going to clinics to be weighed how are your hv registering your ages? I went Thursday and Sam would have been 3 weeks on the Friday but she put him as 2 weeks and so he's much higher on the centile line when she plotted him!

ChickenMe · 06/05/2015 13:15

My mum was a midwife too kis, surely MWs should know how hard it can be to get BF going let's hope they are kind to you! I remember at that hormonal stage taking pretty much every comment to mean I was a terrible mum. Well my DD is a little porker now so I think they r ok!!

What's your feeding routine jet? Are you only expressing? That's tough. In the hosp I had to pump 60mlx8 for DD before she managed to suck properly. that was hell.

Wineandchoccy · 06/05/2015 14:15

Hv thinks Eleanor has a slight tongue tie, she has an appt next Wed to check it and if the consultant agrees it will be snipped.
Has anybody else's baby had this done?

I cried buckets yesterday as HV made me feel rubbish because dd has still not gained as much weight as they would have liked.
I'm having a better day today I've just had a bath, now feeding dd and then I'm going to go for a sleep when she has her nap.

Lauren82000 · 06/05/2015 14:21

As long as baby is happy, plenty of wet & dirty nappies I'd ignore them Wine. They try so hard to pigeon hole every baby when we all know everyone is different and grows/develops at different rates.

I have a boobie monster today. She just seems to want 1 boob every hour or a short nibble on both. I wanted an extra nap this afternoon but she is sleeping on me and DH won't let me sleep like that. (Although what he doesn't know can't hurt him as I fell asleep this morning with her in the bed for 2 hours)Wink

daholster · 06/05/2015 14:54

My midwife said it is normal for fair skinned ladies in particular to get sore nipples even with a good latch, they need to harden up and it can take a couple of weeks. I corrected the poor latch at day 5 at the bf clinic and it took another 10-14 days for them to stop being sore. I couldn't use nipple shields because they hurt to put on and ds latched too shallowly on them and just bent my nipple at the base and that was excruciating so I abandoned them and gritted my teeth and cried! Its truly awful.

wine ds had his tongue tie done at 2 weeks old. It made his latch deeper and altered how much milk he got at once I think because he instantly started being sick more and at first the latch got sorer while my nipples got used to the new suck.

Wineandchoccy · 06/05/2015 14:57

Thanks daholster sore nipples doesn't sound like much fun but as long as dd is ok I will put up with the pain.

ChickenMe · 06/05/2015 15:55

It's really windy here Lauren don't know about u and on FB yest they were saying it makes babies unsettled- DD has not gone an hour between feeds today Confused
