Just catching up on all the news on here! Morning sickness has hit this week - all day nausea and a few times actually being sick, twice at work, yuk! Have bought some seasickness bands to see if they will help. How is everyone else coping at work? Thoughts on taking sick days anyone?

Jcandy · 07/05/2015 20:03

I'm not coping very well can't. I'm only managing about 6 hours at work before having to drag myself home. Spoke to my manager about it today and he wants me to log the hours so I can make them up when I'm feeling better. Problem is this could go on for weeks which would be a lot of hours to make. Gonna speak to the midwife about it on Monday but think if I'm not good in the morning I may just phone in sick. Feels rubbish to do but I can't afford the pay cut at the moment and don't want the stress of owing so many hours!

My sickness ramped up about the same time chandler

WaitingForEgg · 07/05/2015 20:19

afloat We are scan buddies! Mine is also next Monday, can't wait
Fizzie I am also a bit nervous about the weight thing. Last time I saw my GP I got a bit of a lecture despite being only a size 12 (I am fairly short, huge breasts, my BMI really doesn't reflect my size that well) and I felt very offended as I run regularly and don't eat badly, oh well, i'm just prepared for a comment. I definitely will be heavier this time too after eating a lot on holiday recently and non stop the past couple of weeks!

TerryTheGreenHorse · 07/05/2015 20:33

Sorry to hear that Jcandy, how many holiday days have you got?

Could you take a day off once a fortnight and leave a little early every day?

At the end of the day if you feel dreadful you will just have to call in sick, hope they are being understanding about it all. Thanks

Jcandy · 07/05/2015 20:51

Got 5 weeks holiday left but want to take 3 weeks at the end and two single weeks in between that. They are being understanding it's just rubbish that I might end up having to go off sick completely to get full pay when I could cope with half days but then would lose out money wise. So if I help them then I lose out.

Avasmum8 · 07/05/2015 21:31

Jcandy I would phone in sick then if your not feeling well, they can't make you make up your hours if your going home because your unwell? I do 12 hour shifts, only three a week but they are so exhausting, I've had two weeks off work though (very well planned!) and will be going back when I'm almost 9 weeks next wed and dreading it.. No one knows I'm pregnant there yet, I'm a midwife on delivery suite so don't get much time to sit around constantly busy and only get half an hours break if I'm lucky! Getting such bad nausea! Hope we all start feeling better after 12 weeks :) x

Jcandy · 07/05/2015 21:44

Apparently they can avasmum Sad I'm just in an office though work for NHS. I'm hoping it goes away soon.

Avasmum8 · 07/05/2015 21:59

Ahh that's rubbish :( at least working for the NHS if you do have to take some annual leave before baby we will accrue extra whilst being off on maternity..

ChandlersFarang · 08/05/2015 07:51

Sorry to everyone that is suffering at work. It feels so wrong to have to keep smiling and doing a bloody job (or look after kids!) when you're trying to deal with what feels like a circus on fire under your work clothes...!! Caitlin Moran's words there but very accurate!! Grin

I'm getting quite depressed about weight gain. I was super fit before I got pregnant, doing tons of high impact exercise and eating really well. Have put on 3.5kgs since my BFP, according to the scales this morning! I was told not to run or jump around too much due to the ovarian cysts I have, which is so annoying as I wanted to get back to running if the scan had showed everything was OK. I'm not eating as many carbs now at least but I'm going to have to switch up my routine to do a brisk walk on a treadmill every morning to stop this tide!! Where I live I can't walk outside and it's driving me mad. It's just too hot and humid and polluted and pavements don't really exist like they do in the UK. Could really do with living in England again right now before I get so fat I won't fit on the plane home!! ShockGrinWink

shinysparklythings · 08/05/2015 07:53

Jcandy that's rubbish hope you start feeling better soon.

Ava I don't know how you cope with 12 hour shifts!!!

It's my booking in this morning :) I'm 9+6 so will be good to finally discuss my pregnancy as I feel clueless! Not looking forward to being told I'm overweight! I don't look it though, I have a tiny waist, but wide hips and humongous boobies!

Dh has just text me to say he is covered in a rash and is really hot and itchy Hmm he says the bumps are small and not coloured mostly on arms and legs! He works in the middle of nowhere but I'll get him to a chemist as soon as he is home tonight! So glad it's Friday!
The election results are making me extremely sad this morningConfused I almost burst into tears earlier. I'm genuinely scared for the future.

NicNak22 · 08/05/2015 08:10

Ladies what is your view on telling people early, I don't believe it will jinx anything but I'm worried about offending people who might not like to know early.

I'll be 8 week Monday and this is our first, we are out tonight with some very close family friends so week be doing the alcohol avoidance anyway.

We are thinking maybe tell them?

Advice please..

claremccrory59 · 08/05/2015 08:22

Morning ladies!
Anybody else setting headaches at all yet? I had a terrible headache from 6pm all through the night. Was tearful this morning at the though of doing a days work - thank goodness it's Friday!
Is this a common pregnancy symptom or just a headache??

chopsface · 08/05/2015 08:32

candy I work for the nhs, if I go home part way through the day ill its not put on my sickness record. Plus morning sickness doesn't count as sickness either, its a 'pregnancy related absence' like midwife appoints. You need to read the policies and find out your rights. Making time up indeed, hurumph. Shame on your boss.

shinysparklythings · 08/05/2015 08:41

Nik am it's completely up to you. ive told a few people but they are people whose support I would need in case of mc. You can't jinx anything, bean will either be sticky or not and telling people won't change that.

Clare I think headaches are a common pregnancy symptom another one to add to the glamorous list!

Jcandy · 08/05/2015 08:50

Yeah chops that's how I understood it but apparently coz it seems to be some that's prolonged they can't just do that. Think I need to speak to hr myself. If I didn't have a deadline today I wouldn't have come in, feel rubbish Sad

WaitingForEgg · 08/05/2015 09:00

ChandlersFarang I feel your pain, not been able to run due to extreme boob pain! Any bobbing needs to be avoided at all costs! I just need to reduce my carb intake, i've been eating so many as it's the only thing that reduces my sickness Hmm

Avasmum8 · 08/05/2015 09:26

Shiny I agree about being scared for the future, my family are all in the NHS, police and education.. Gutted that conservative will rule again, this time alone it looks like! But I know everyone has their own opinion on it and lots of people will be quite happy with that.

I sometimes think it's easier telling some people early, depending on who they are but at the same time I told mine and DH close family last time and then had to tell them a few weeks later that I had miscarried which was horrible as I didn't really want to talk about it. But fingers crossed everything will go well for you.

ThreeBeanRap · 08/05/2015 09:33

NicNak my policy has been 'if something went wrong, would I want them to know?' if so then I've been happy to tell them. It's completely up to you, do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I'm eating carbs constantly too, I want pasta for pretty much every meal. Must have some salad at some point!

shiny and ava totally agree, I'm really disappointed.

afloat · 08/05/2015 09:35

jcandy I can't believe how unreasonable your manager is! Especially since you work for the NHS. I hope they come around. I'm finding it soooo hard to focus on work. I'm a researcher and I don't really have set hours, we work, come and go, whenever, and are judged on outputs, not turning up. It sounds great but makes me feel anxious all the time about under-performing. I'm working from home today, so nice to spend commuting time in bed, but I'll do my best not to doss off...

Waiting exciting about the scan on Monday! Grin I hope they don't give you weight grief - BMI is really not great as a scale, what matters more is how much you move and what you eat.

shiny good luck with the booking appointment! Do report back. I'm also feeling really grim after this election. My social circle is very multicultural, mainly very well educated Europeans (and I'm Irish); I just feel like this country (the political establishment at least) has become that bit more unfriendly towards us Sad

NicNac I wouldn't be worried about offending people, it's your news to tell as you like. But I think the 12 week rule thing needn't be gospel - I have heard people say that if they would want someone's support if they miscarried, then they would tell them. I would love to be able to talk about it with my Mum but we're not meeting for another three weeks...

FlorIxora · 08/05/2015 09:44

candy So sorry to hear you're feeling so bad. I am not certain you should make up the hours. I would look into this if I were you.

chandler enough of that nonesense. You were super fit (too fit?) and you will be again. Most women get back to their pre baby weight within a year. You're growing a whole other human. Just walk and swim if you can and you'll be fine. I think the body has a memory. It's unlikely that you would go from athletic to enormous-for-the-rest-of-your-life on the back of one tiny baby. :)

NikNak I'm on the exact same timeline. I have told boss, 2 colleagues, mum, (2 strangers, my estate agent and my tenant-long story).
Everybody has been lovely and understanding. I am waiting a few more days for MIL because that gives us opportunity to give the news face to face. Then telling BFF with fertility issues. I think you should feel free to tell who you want to. It's your body, your pregnancy, tell who you need to. A friend who has two kids has warned me against telling too early because I may become sick to the back of my teeth about answering inane pregnancy related questions. She also said to remain vague about due date else people will hound you with texts and calls and "so are you gonna have that baby soon" closer to the EDD.

Ava I cannot fathom doing what you do with nausea. You must be seriously badass.

So I woke up with morning feeling pretty good. My bloated stomach had decreased in size. My initial weight gain has plateaued (Chandlers I have never been fit). I thought this is pretty good. Managed to walk to the bus stop before intense nausea took over. Bleurgh. (not sure if it's pregnancy or election related).

I am moving house this week end. Wish me luck.

Jcandy · 08/05/2015 09:51

Been trying to look into it but basically if I'm well enough to come to work they only have to pay me for what I do. They are being flexible in allowing me to reduce my hours temporarily. It's up to me whether I decide to take them unpaid or make them back up.

afloat · 08/05/2015 09:59

Good luck with the move, flor!

12 hour shifts as a midwife with nausea?! Superhero indeed Ava! And how cool to have a midwife among us! I feel bad complaining too much, compared with what some of you are going through. I've not been properly nauseous too much, just constant mild nausea and revulsion when I smell people/things, or my DP suggests a food. I've not actually thrown up. And constant fatigue. I'm not actually in pain, and feel really badly for those who do x

Jodiesaurus · 08/05/2015 10:01

Morning all hope you're all well. I had a scan this morning as a little brown discharge appeared yesterday and there's a baby with a strong heartbeat and I'm exactly 8 weeks my due date is now 18th Dec we are over the moon!

afloat There was a man coughing/sneezing/retching on the tube yesterday. I hated him on the spot and wished him all kind of ills. I felt some nauseated. I am still shuddering 12 hours on.

afloat · 08/05/2015 10:16

flor I can smell the bad breath of anyone that passes me on the street, the crappy perfume/Lynx of people next to me on the tube, gag.

Jodie woo woooo! Check out your bean!!!
