toots sorry to hear you are having a hard time, I think if the hospital said you were dehydrated that definitely goes beyond normal pregnancy sickness. I am lucky enough that my 'morning sickness' involves a bit of nausea and not fancying certain foods...if your GP's was like this then it is easy for her to say it is something that you just have to cope with, but I know that for other women it is much worse. I would ask to see a different doctor for a second opinion.

BleachedBarnet · 15/04/2015 16:40

thank you so much toots, annbag and annatha. I feel a bit more prepared now...

I lay down for the booking in test, so hopefully will be able to lie down again for this one. It's in a different place so who knows though, will make sure my phone is fully charged!

BowiesJumper · 15/04/2015 16:47

toots well done on going to work! Your Dr sounds like a jerk!

Not looking forward to the tube home, especially with my current super sense of smell! WHY CAN'T PEOPLE WASH AND USE DEODORANT?!

AmandaMae · 15/04/2015 16:52

toots she sounds like a silly cow. The NICE guidelines for treating Hyperemesis Gravidarum have been updated recently so she is showing her own ignorance. It is a serious condition which should be treated. Can you see another GP? Get an emergency appointment? Now that you've been hospitalised, she surely must agree that this requires help?!? Have a look at the Pregnancy Sickness Support website too - really good info from people who get it.

stace1986 · 15/04/2015 16:54

Toots I would ask to see a diff GP! Mine prescribed tablets on my first visit because i was feeling so ill!

Glad your scan went well! :)

Mamama I am so very sorry for your loss.

For those of you who don't like blood being taken and can't get veins found, do you drink loads of water beforehand? I used to be terrible but now follow a routine of nuts and seeds before the appointment to stabilise blood sugar, loads (and I mean loads) of water and wash your hands in warm water before you go in - being cold is bad for veins! I haven't had any issues since I started doing this and used to pass out almost every time I went.

toots you're my due date twin now!

Crumbelina · 15/04/2015 17:17

What a day Toots! Glad you're ok and to echo other comments I'd definitely see another GP. What an outdated cow.

On the theme of hormones, I haven't seen a surge in the emotional hormones that make me blub. Instead I just feel very, very irritable. The dawdling tourists outside Westminster Abbey made me swear this morning and I seem to be more narky with DH and family (oops). I've no idea where this has come from!

SnozzberryPie · 15/04/2015 17:51

Ladystark thanks for the tip. Mine is to make a note of which arm they manage to get blood out of - they always have more luck with my left arm for some reason.

BlueBananas · 15/04/2015 17:52

Oh no mamama I'm so sorry, really gutted for you Sad give yourself time to recover and take care lovely Flowers

TakesTwoToTango · 15/04/2015 18:09

Oh mamama no! I was so desperately hoping it was all going to be okay for you Sad I am so sorry. Flowers

Laura and ehealy very glad to hear you got good news at your scans.

toots sorry to hear you've been having such a stressful day but great news that all is okay with bean. Are they admitting you to give you IV fluids and antibiotics or do they think you are able to keep enough down yourself?

bleached I too am needle phobic. Please believe me when I say that through pregnancy it does get better! Frequent blood tests is actually no bad thing because gradually the rational experience that each one is actually okay and you survive it, overrides (a bit) the irrational terror. You will find, I am sure, that you are better able to control your fear tomorrow than you were today, and better still the next time.

TakesTwoToTango · 15/04/2015 18:22

Sorry toots just saw you update - you're in work! Respect! I hope your boss is going to give you some time off in lieu as a thank you!

Bleached I also meant to say, the more experienced the person taking the blood, the less painful it is as a general rule. The people taking the blood for the glucose tolerance test will do it all the time! When it comes to your routine anti natal blood tests, you can ask you midwife to give you the completed blood form and take it to the phlebotomists at your local hospital (call and find out the hours of your drop-in blood test clinic) and get them to do the test. Their entire job is taking blood and they do it hundreds of times a day. I'm sure your midwife won't mind if you explain it is your way of dealing with a needle phobia.

TakesTwoToTango · 15/04/2015 18:25

PPS I also used to tell them not to say 'sharp scratch' before they took it and just to get on with it (in line with the whole hypnobirthing mentality that state of mind is half the battle - it doesn't help me control my anxiety to have someone tell me they are about to hurt me just before they do it, when they want me to stay still - my instinctive reaction to 'sharp scratch' is to pull my arm away and get up and run to the other side of the room - embarrassingly, I have actually done this) Blush Grin

annatha · 15/04/2015 18:55

takes two great tips, I hate it when they say sharp scratch! I had an injection in what I can only describe as my hip fat last pg for something or other (it may have been anti d, towards the end I lost track) and the midwife wouldn't shut up about what a big needle it was and how "Hurty and owchy" it would be.Hmm

annatha · 15/04/2015 18:56

Btw it felt no different to a normal jab, I hope I didn't scare anyone off anti d just then!

BlueBananas · 15/04/2015 19:02

The midwife at my booking in buggered up the first vein she found and pierced through it! Now it's bruised for about 4 inches up my arm Hmm cheers for that, so now I have sickness bands, a bump and a blood test bruise to hide from people!
...ps it still didn't hurt though, I didn't know she'd done this till she told me - disclaimer for all the needle phobics

roughtyping · 15/04/2015 19:15

I quite like getting my blood taken Blush don't like seeing the needle go in but a bit fascinated by watching the blood come out! I can't remember my anti-d jag so can't have been too bad...

If you're needle/blood phobic don't read the next bit!!

I have really shit veins, difficult to find etc. when I was having DS, nurse was trying to put a drip in (I think?! I was really very out of it). Anyway, she tried my right hand first, in about three different places, until my hand started swelling up. Had a massive big bruise for about three weeks afterwards, on hand and wrist. Anyway, so she tried my other hand and managed to get it in on the second attempt. However, she forgot to put the 'lid' (again, not sure!!!) on it, lifted my arm and blood was spurting everywhere. Apparently. I was quite happily totally out of it and had no idea Grin

CoffeeTwo · 15/04/2015 19:17

Mama I'm so so sorry to hear your news. How heartbreaking :( Flowers

Toots ehealy and Laura so pleased to hear about your scans.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 15/04/2015 19:33

I am not fussed about needles at all, give blood regularly etc - but have shite veins, it took two people to successfully get anything out at my last appointment...

flyingsprocket · 15/04/2015 19:57

I'm usually pretty mean with my blood too heir but at this booking appointment it was no problem. I don't mind needles at all, in fact I'm fascinated by all things medical. There must be some medic types on here, there's usually at least one hiding somewhere on a bus!

mrscatmad31 · 15/04/2015 19:58

despite taking blood and injecting animals all day I'm pretty rubbish with needles Envy
I think I'm feeling better, the thought of dinner didn't make me feel ill Grin
any tips on acne in pregnancy? my skin is awful right now Sad
