Have had the baby monitor debate with DP. He doesn't see them as worthwhile as with living in a small house, we could hear the baby very easily. However, my feeling is that with a monitor you can catch them at the whimpering stage rather than waiting for the screaming to start. I've found a BT one (audio only) for £45 that's a Which best buy. I've had a couple of people urge me to buy a video monitor though, based on their experiences.

BadIdeaBear · 20/04/2015 08:58

My understanding is that they can help you see if baby is really waking up or just making sleepy snuffles, so it can save you trips into the nursery/ bedroom that are perhaps unnecessary! I'm well up for that being in a two-level house so I think we're going to go video. If you've got a loft to get to, I imagine that sounds good for you too.

beno57 · 20/04/2015 09:11

We ended up getting a video monitor but quite a cheap one in case we don't use it too much. We like the idea that you can see what they are doing and give them a chance to settle themselves before going in. That is the theory anyway, I will probably watch them sleep for weeks to check they are still breathing!

Naturegirl82 · 20/04/2015 09:47

We have found the video monitor useful. It helps see if DD is crying in her sleep or actually awake and standing up.

MustBeLoopy390 · 20/04/2015 09:48

We didn't bother using ours last time (spent a fair bit on it but never needed it), it got given to sil who said it was quite useful.

Naturegirl82 · 20/04/2015 10:21

We didn't actually bother buying a monitor until DD was 6 months though as until then we kept her with us for all naps and sleeps as per SIDS guidance. So it is something you can wait to see if you need one and buy it later if needed.

Charliej86 · 20/04/2015 10:31

Just been thinking the same there nature. Baby probably won't be far away when sleeping for a good few months so think we'll wait for monitors. Not that I used them with older dcs.

I'm very achy and tired today.

charlieis30 · 20/04/2015 12:20

I live in a flat so I'm going to skip the monitor for now and see how we go.

Off to John Lewis nursery appointment this arvo, mostly I just wanted to try out a bunch of pushchair/pram/buggies at once (and hopefully get my head around the difference, where I'm from we just call them all "prams"!) Didn't know it would turn into a gift registry thing. Oh well. I'm not sure anyone is going to buy us gifts (I'm certainly not planning a shower or anything like that) but I suppose there's no harm in at least building a list?

broodylicious · 20/04/2015 13:05

Are there any fellow crafters in here? There's a few on the Facebook group but just wondered if anyone else is busy knitting, sewing etc?
I've just finished making the animals for a kind of mobile I'm putting together.

Anyone else getting Braxton hicks type pains while walking? I think I'm over doing it slightly (spd is flaring up and back injury isn't helping) and I'm having to lean on a pushchair with ds on but it's not something I'm not used to iyswim? Anyone know how much is 'too much'? 28wk appt on Wednesday so will check with midwife but dreading the school runs Sad

Naturegirl82 · 20/04/2015 13:17

must I get braxton hicks everytime I stand up from my desk. Didn't really have any at all with DD but had loads this time.

jmojo · 20/04/2015 14:16

must braxton - hicks here too. I know I get more when I am very actve so I am trying to spread out my activity. So if I am painting the nursery I take breaks and then no swim or walk that day. Otherwise i try to swim /walk/ or do yoga each day as my job involves me sitting down. Everyone will be different tho, i knew women who were hiking in the alps during this period of their pregnany, but it was something they did a lot pre pregnancy. You need to find what works for you and make sure you get rest after.

charlieis30 · 20/04/2015 14:29

broody I was totally planning to, have pinned loads of crafty ideas on pinterest but now I'm a bit like...meh. I bought some fabric just in case. I had planned at least to make a really jaunty yellow cot sheet!

Fattycow · 20/04/2015 14:47

I've been busy, will catch up later.

Fattycow · 20/04/2015 16:03

I'm making my own baby blanket! I have knitted most of it by now, so maybe I'll have time for another one after this.

We are probably getting a camera for the nursery. Not a specific baby monitor one, but a 'normal' one. It will connect to our wifi and the notifications of any movement and/or sound are being send to our mobiles. This allows us to also check up on baby when we go to our neighbours a few doors down for a cup of tea or something, as the signal doesn't get lost.

Fattycow · 20/04/2015 16:12

Oh, and I had a baby shower yesterday! My friends threw me one and they got me some lovely things. One of the things is a sling I have been admiring, so I'm really happy with that one! I cannot wait for the baby to arrive so I can carry him/her around in it, all snuggled up to me. Smile
Also, I got a kick yesterday that was so hard that I actually cried out in pain! [shocked]

Fattycow · 20/04/2015 16:12

Shock I mean...

Naturegirl82 · 20/04/2015 16:26

fatty glad you enjoyed your baby shower and got the sling you want. I still find it a bit strange people are happy to leave their baby in their house but I know it's a common dutch thing. Do you not think you'll worry? With DD I used to panic if I was just popping rubbish in the bin and check I had my keys a million times just in case and I considered myself quite laid back! haha!

Naturegirl82 · 20/04/2015 16:27

Sorry just reread my message and it comes across a bit judgemental, it wasn't meant to. I'm just interested in the different attitudes in different countries.Blush

broodylicious · 20/04/2015 17:34

nature, it didn't come across as judgey IMO. I felt exactly the same with dd re just popping to bin or get something from the car! Personally I wouldn't leave the house either but as you say, that could be a cultural thing. Or maybe just more relaxed parenting styles abroad. Is that quite common there, fatty?

These are my animals for the baby's mobile (well, not quite mobile, more like painted twigs placed in a jar/vase with the animals hanging off them!)
Not quite sure what to make next yet...

I don't know yet how I'll feel once baby is here, but most people don't mind going to the neighbours. If you take the baby monitor, there really isn't much difference between sitting on your own sofa or the one next door, is there?
I would never dream to go away with the baby staying home alone though. Not to the mail box, not to the supermarket, not to nowhere! Even if it is just 5 minutes, that is too long. I need to be able to get to my baby in 10 seconds.

Fattycow · 20/04/2015 19:02

broody, those animals are so cute!

MustBeLoopy390 · 20/04/2015 21:49

It's funny how different cultures have different ways and norms, I'm quite relaxed but only tend to leave little ones in the next room or in pram/cot while I nip in the bathroom. I'm going to start resting more after the school run I think, been talking to dh and he doesn't mind if tea is late or I haven't done much about the flat during the day so I can stop putting so much pressure on myself to get it all done so dh doesn't have to. I had a lovely nap this afternoon when he got home though :)
Broody those animals are lovely Smile I'm nowhere near crafty enough for stuff like that lol

Sherbet38 · 20/04/2015 22:41

Hi everyone Smile

We're getting through the list of things to buy, I bought a changing mat this wkd, so that's another thing ticked off. I went to the Tesco baby event, bought nappies, baby bath and a steriliser. Hoping to BF, so hopefully won't need the steriliser immediately, but it was a good price. They had the perfect prep machine on offer there too... but I keep reading on one of the bargain apps that some Tescos have then in store for £25 which is a total bargain. They all seem to be up north though, lucky northerners Wink

I tasked DH with researching monitors & he's decided we need the AngelCare one that's about £180 Shock Strangeas this is most out of character for him, he's usually in favour of the cheapest option! Wink

I have my 28 week midwife appointment tomorrow and whooping cough on wed. Not looking forward to the needles Sad

Hope everyone doing OK Smile
