Sorry Twinkle. I hope you don't think we were being insensitive - just sharing experiences. x

Hi all, havent been around for a while but good to catch up - has taken me ages!!

Twinkle, hope you are feeling a bit happier this afternoon. Know where you are coming from, I get days where I am so down and really cant work out why.

MIAM, not many places routinely swab for group b strep at the moment and some of the tests they use are not particularly reliable (meaning they could give you a false negative result). There is a gold standard test available but has to be paid for privately, I think it costs around £30. I will be doing that this time as my ds was infected with GBS at birth and was very poorly staying in special care for 11 days having antibiotics. You can get loads of information off the group b strep support website. Sorry cant do a link but think its www.gbss.org (they also tell you where to get the test done privately).
In my humble opinion I think all pregnant women should at least be offered the test. I would not wish what we went through on anyone and we were lucky as our ds is still very much with us and things could have been so different. I am a bit freaked about this one too but at least I know that this time I can get treatment to try and prevent history repeating itself.

After that very serious moment, hope everyone has a good day!!

Sexonlegs · 07/11/2006 14:16

Twinkle, that's ok. I know sometimes I get carried away on here - open mouth without engaging brain!!

Greengirlforever · 07/11/2006 14:20

Twinkle, my DS1's (different dad) dad died, HIS parents are dead, and there is only one (mad) uncle on that side of the family for him . And my dad (mum dead) and stepmum are not the most attentive grandparents in the world but DS1 was a very happy child and is now an unusually happy teenager! I think it's more us than the children who miss parents / in-laws - the children won't miss what they never had.

And Twinkle, seeing as I'm in Devon I'm happy to swing both ways (baaad joke moment!) and have a meetup eg. in Plymouth as well!

nuttygirl · 07/11/2006 14:20

LOL I really wnted the name fruitandnutcase but it was taken. My first name is a nut and DH surname (now mine too!) is a fruit so when I got married there were many fruit and nut jokes!!! My sis even offered to sing 'Everyone's a fruit and nut case' as I walked down the aisle ...needless to say I declined politely!!!!

Greengirlforever · 07/11/2006 14:23

Mammyjo - so glad to have you back!

Was getting quite worried about you. Hope everything is ok with you.

I think I have had / am having this Group B test as all the maternity care seems to be so good here, but I had never heard of all this before so will definitely be checking it out!

nuttygirl · 07/11/2006 14:23

Oops sorry Twinkle, didn't see your post. So sorry to hear about PIL. I too have the speak now, think later problem!

WaspElly · 07/11/2006 14:23

SOL - would be OK with a Southampton meet up - there are a few of us S Coast/Hampshire types aren't there?
It'd have to be a weekend though as I work full time, & will generally have ds in tow too (17 mo)
Am lucky in my PiL although MiL is almost too good with son - talks non-stop at him and is SO ott (he loves it, and she's happy to look after him, so never mind) luckily they're near Devon so it's all in controllable bursts.
Re names - I've always been a firm beleiver in giving the child the long version of the name you like - they can then choose their diminutive so for Ned go Edward then it's their choice later on. Hence Thomasine as girlie choice although it'll always be "Tamsin" at home. Mind you although I'm a Nell at home and was Elinor in full throughout childhood (didn't want to even go to the smellie ellie route funilly enough) - got given Elly at Uni when people were over the name calling stage, and I was better able to take it!

twinkle183 · 07/11/2006 14:28

Greengirlforever that would be great a Plymouth meet up as I lived there for 5 years and know the place well!!!!

Thats okay not a problem...

Hope to catch ya all later...

Take care

Hey everyone hope you are all well, me i've not been so good.
I sound like a right poof but I have had the mother of all head colds.
It got so bad saturday night DH took me into hospital, had such huge pains in my head, a temp of 120 or something like that (not sure DH knows how to read a thermometer) , nose bleeds and all sorts poor DH couldn't get any sense out of me and thought I was going to die! (bless him)
So dragged me off to see the doc, who said with the twins my body was just so low on all the goodies it should normaly have, the cold just got a little out of hand.
spent the night to get my temp down etc, then packed me off with every type of vitamin and supplements known to man.
Starting to feel a bit more human now although I am still rough as a badgers a**e.
I'm sure if I had been at all with it would have been quite frightening.

AngeG · 07/11/2006 17:17

Hi all sorry I haven't been on for a while. Ds has had chicken pox and been quite poorly so haven't been able to get online.

I've tried to catch up, but 4 days worth is not that easy.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble with PILs mine moved to Spain in July so don't see them like I used to when they lived 10 mins down the road. Feel a bit that this baby won't really know them at all.

Sexonlegs I would be up for a Southampton meet up. Although weekends are quite hectic for me between now and Christmas, but i'll try to put an appearance in with what is arranged.

Hope everyone else is ok. Got mw app tomorrow. Getting my Spina Bifida blood test results which i'm worrying a little about otherwise just a routine app.

Hope everyone ok. Will try and keep more on top of things now.

18+2

AngeG · 07/11/2006 17:18

Forgot to say 1becomes3 make sure you rest up and take it easy - sounds like you've got yourself a bit run down. Sorry you've been so poorly and hope you're feeling better soon.

weeonion · 07/11/2006 19:55

poor 1B3 - what an awful time for you and dh. it must have scared the life out of him. rest up!

muminamini · 07/11/2006 20:36

1B3 - how frightening - you take care of yourself and big hugs to you.

Mammyjo thanks for the info on GBS - will definatley be getting it done privatley nearer the time.....does it make a difference if the baby is born by c-sec or not - I read somewhere I think that they catch it travelling down the birth canal....or is that just rubbish?

Bloody football on again tonight GRRRR - it feels like just about every night and all weekend DH is watching some footie match or other....gets on my wick at times. I've read all my pregnancy mags cover to cover and when I buy a new one they all feel a bit "samey" now...sigh

Will have to get myself a good book I think

Night all

MIAM x

Sexonlegs · 07/11/2006 21:15

1B3, so sorry to hear you have been so unwell. Take it easy hun, and I hope you bounce back soon.
Tili, I am hopeless with injections. I used not to be able to look at a needle on TV and always lie down for bloods. Saw all the blood in the tube they had taken and came over well funny!
Hi Ange, think it may have to be after xmas, as we are busy pretty much every weekend between now and then. Plus it will be lovely to have something in the New Year to focus on.
Hope everyone is well. My glands in my armpit are sore, so feel a bit rough tonight.
Anyway, see you tomorrow. xx

liath · 07/11/2006 21:23

1B3, hope you're feeling better & what a sweet DH you have - hope he's not too traumatised! Hope your ds is on the mend, too AngeG. I'm currently giving myself the heebiejeebies watching panorama on pandemic flu - very scary.

We don't get offered GBS screening here which is par for the course really - no nuchal scan, no detailed scan....!

Think of Christopher for a boy but am stuck for a girl. Dd's name shortens to Ellie - I hadn't thought of the smelly-Ellie thing, oops - poor dd.

EllieK · 07/11/2006 21:46

I'm an Ellie too, (doh, like you hadn't worked that out from the nickname!) I'm Ellen tho, not Eleanor. I never really got my name shortened at school, very occasionally my little bro's (15 & 17) still call me smelly when they want to annoy me!
i kinda think that whatever name you choose there'll be some way the kids at school will turn it into a joke, just watch out for the initials spelling things, I got far more stick for being E.E.K. than i ever did for being smelly elly!

EllieK · 07/11/2006 21:49

and just to update you all, and get it off my chest,
dp has moved out. i couldn't take it anymore and was starting to hate him. he's lodging with a friend and things are much more settled at home now, i've even managed to be on time (or early!) for work for weeks!
I was on my own last time i was pg and i cope much better that way, bizarre i know!

AngeG · 07/11/2006 21:53

Sexonlegs - the new year sounds great to me. Something to look forward to after Christmas is over. Hope your feeling better soon

Muminamini - I think the strep B thing is something the baby gets when it travels down the birth canal, so if you have a c-section it shouldn't be a problem. Not experienced this myself but met someone whilst in scbu with DS whose baby had contracted it, won't go into the details but it wasn't a happy ending. She then went on to have another which they delivered by c-section to remove the risk. Hope that helps.

Night all i'm off to bed now

AngeG · 07/11/2006 21:54

EllieK - not sure what to say - you sound as though you are at ease with the situation now, which you weren't before. Just wanted to say I'm thinking of you.
