Midnight I think that the screening results will not necessarily change people's views on whether or not to have their baby, more I think it's to prepare them for if the results came back as being high and to get the support system they need early on.
It's a totally personal decision and everyone is different.
You can always have the blood tests if you change your mind and decide you do want the test.

Toffeegirl39 · 12/03/2015 20:07

gooorooo I had a m/c last year too, but try not to worry.
I'm 39 and my Down's odds were 1 in 9000. My midwife said the Down's/ nuchal screening test also looks for Patau and Edwards syndrome too, I'm in gloucestershire?
Hope it's all good news for you.

GoooRooo · 12/03/2015 20:08

Colchester, bonzo. Actually another poster on this thread is also in Colchester and already had her scan. DrDonna did they test for Edwards and Pataus too or no? I'm thinking probably not.

GoooRooo · 12/03/2015 20:09

Thanks Toffee. With DS they couldn't get a Nuchal reading (I suspect because I'm fat and they found it hard to see through me!). I had the quad test for him and got 1/1500 which is not brilliant but still enough for me not to worry. I hope I get similar this time.

Midnight I won't terminate for Downs. I just want to know one way or the other.

bonzo77 · 12/03/2015 20:11

midnight also, for example, Downs is associated with other problems, importantly heart defects. So if they know that your baby has this they can be extra careful to make sure it gets the treatment it needs at the appropriate time. That might mean making sure you deliver at a centre with the highest level NICU for example.

misssmil well, I am still horseriding and have no immediate plans to stop. I'm sure you will not over balance!

thecrab · 12/03/2015 20:22

I just assumed you weren't allowed to bike or horse ride in case you fall off... now I need to look up what over balance is

Stanway · 12/03/2015 20:27

I had a really useful session with my pilates teacher who's also a physio and trained in ante-natal exercise. She explained what to avoid, how to modify exercises and what was particularly good. It's given me the confidence to keep doing plenty of exercise (weights, tabata, pilates) rather than taking it too easy. Also she recommended that I downloaded the NHS app Squeezy which reminds you to do your pelvic floor exercises and counts you down etc, it's great! !

misssmilla1 · 12/03/2015 20:30

I think the overbalance thing was you can't balance your weight as well and carry on the front, so you're more at risk of falling off and damaging yourself.

ShootTheMoon · 12/03/2015 20:34

Re exercise, I'm still playing hockey 2-3 times a week, but will be stopping in a week or two, as you can only play until 16 weeks. Have been doing it the whole way through and it was the only thing that distracted me from being nauseated!

When I stop I will probably go back to spinning, and an antenatal yoga class, plus hopefully get round to doing yoga at home. I've been too knackered to do otherwise!

misssmilla1 · 12/03/2015 20:35

My doctor just called with the results of the harmony test. I came back as low risk for Downs, Edward and Patau, which works out 1:10,000 risk so there's a 0.01% chance supposedly of an issue.

We also found out the sex of the baby from bloodwork. Confirmed that we're 99.9% likely to have a boy. I'm very happy and also a bit in shock!

Whatabout · 12/03/2015 20:42

Misssmilla great news!

Toffeegirl39 · 12/03/2015 20:57

Wow mismilla! Didn't know they could tell you the sex from bloods!
How lovely! Smile

lovesmycake · 12/03/2015 21:07

Aw a little boy how lovely congrats.

Midnight I have not had the downs test it isn't an option here in Norway we didn't have it with DS either just the nuchal test. Not having the choice hasn't bothered me really but probably just because it isn't an option?

Mummyboo30 · 12/03/2015 22:05

Still haven't had my downs test results back yet. It's been 16 days now, getting a bit impatient!
Glad to hear the good results that many of you have been getting though. :)

I'm definitely feeling proper baby movement now, some very definite movements and especially kicks to the bladder when it's full! I guess it must be getting in baby's way!

Excitingtimesahead · 12/03/2015 22:06

Lots of good news today.

Crab, I'm sure it's prob just an antenatal receptionist thing. I tired to cancel an apt and get a very rude response.

whereswaldo · 13/03/2015 06:01

Hey all, to add to the good news, my scan went really well yesterday. Brought forward from 12+1 to 12 +4 and everything in the right place. NT was 1.4 which sonographer was 'pleased with' but waiting for blood work.

DefinitelyNotElsa · 13/03/2015 06:02

Had a private dating scan last night. The sonographer was amazing - went through everything in detail and was very understanding of our nerves given our scare earlier in the pregnancy. It was the best money I've ever spent. Baby is definitely there and looking healthy! Hurrah! Little one is measuring a day ahead, making me 11+5 today with a due date of 27th September.

elio · 13/03/2015 07:38

Great to hear everyone's good news :-)

The NHS blood test looks at the ratios of hcg and papp-a and combines this with your age and the NT measurement, so although they only say it is for downs, different ratios of the two blood components can be indicative of pataus and Edwards as well as downs. For example. My hcg was 4x average and my papp-a was half the average which is a risk factor for downs, but not the other two (my Edwards risks was 1:708996) hope that makes sense.

Exercise wise the last week I have been so stressed out I haven't even thought about it, and then I was worried about the CVS. I find I feel great running, it the next day i am so tired I can't open my eyes..not very helpful.

Really exciting that people who did the harmony thing will find out the gender- I should hopefully know next week too!

Thinking of jumping in the deep end and going to a nearly new nct sale tmw, seems they only come around twice a year and new buggy's and such can cost more than I am selling my van for! Has anyone whose not a first timer been to one before?

Good luck to all those having scans today, hope that hearing about my crappy odds will give you a bit if comfort. Try not to worry and just enjoy seeing your little baby!

GoooRooo · 13/03/2015 07:46

elio I've not been to a nearly new sale but when I had DS I bought a travel system on ebay for less than half the RRP. It was second hand but had only been used half a dozen times (the lady who had it then bought another one!) so it was like brand new except for a couple of scratches on the tyres. We'll be using it again this time. Must get it out of the loft and give it a clean.

getoffthecoffeetable · 13/03/2015 07:47

Congratulations on the scan news.

NCT sales - they're really good, the tip is to get there early.

Whatabout · 13/03/2015 08:23

NCT members round here get early entry and bag all the good stuff so be warned you need to turn up early as a member of the public and be prepared. As soon as you get in the door head directly to your area of interest. And make decisions as quickly as possible on smaller items. I tend to spend time going through the clothes after I have done large items and toys. For clothes always look at the wash label. It will show how worn the item is and whether it is a decent brand. Some people bag up multiple items and just put one branded item at the front so you can see the label. Sneaky!

I have bought quite a lot from NCT sales, most of my sons toys are from there especially if they are easy to clean and have all of e parts. I don't tend to buy clothes as I buy in the sales. Books are good, the "that's not my..." Books are £5 each usually and sell for much less.
With a pushchair I would be cautious. Only buy if you are very sure as the price cannot be negotiated and I'm not sure how easy it is to return.

Stanway · 13/03/2015 09:23

Ooo, just seen there's an nct nearly new sale in Warwick tomorrow. .. So popular they don't include prams and buggys apparently. ..

Tiredstressed · 13/03/2015 09:36

NCT nearly new sales are good but sharpen your elbows!

Jessica32 · 13/03/2015 09:44

I haven't faced excerise yet but hoping to get back swimming as starting to feel better. Going to do pregnancy yoga too.

My aunt rides (horses) professionally, for her country in the past, now teaching and breaking in. She stopped riding with all 3 of her children due to the potential risk to them if she were to fall. I guess the balance thing makes sense as we all get further along. It's difficult, we could all wrap ourselves in cotton wool but that's not v practical. I guess we all have to make decisions based on our personal feelings. I'm still eating my steak pink for example!

Hare5260 · 13/03/2015 09:52

Thinking of you today Kitty
