We’re in the home stretch ladies, we've had the first baby, how many more threads can we manage before the last baby is here?

Yup another northerner here but I'm in blackpool.

We have 2 first aid kits. One for me n DH with antihistamines, Vicks, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters etc

And one for DD with the ear thermometer, calpol, piriton, eczema cream, snuffle babe, olbas kids and some other odds and sods I've collected on our travels.

daholster · 05/03/2015 22:00

Agree with your dh cinnamon in many respects, I've known people check temps on their baby twice a day just to make sure they aren't getting ill... Not sensible or helpful, you don't treat the number you treat the child. You KNOW when they aren't well/have a fever because they aren't right, grizzly, feel hot, don't feed or whatever. But personally in that situation I like to know that I can take a temperature because doctors always ask! But if dd is ill with a fever and looks poorly I give he calpol, whether or not the thermometer says she has one, I give it to her cos she feels ill. If she has a temp of 38.5C but still running about like a happy loony then I don't give her any, fever is there to combat the bug! So thermometers don't add much... But for some reason I still find having one reassuring. In ear ones are best I think, personally.

I'm in bed. 21.15!!! Wowee!

All was ok on the assessment unit, ds seems to be a happy little chappie Grin. It seems no one is really sure what the bleeding is all about but think it might be the HHT. But there isn't a lot to be done! Bloods ok, Hb 102 and the dr said that's ok. If I bleed again I have to go to A&E Hmm - not sure what they would add if my bloods are normal!!!

Still, registrar and midwife said if I am that knackered I should take some time off and consider finishing now, she said certainly no work tomorrow. I think I'll wait til early next week then see if I have recovered enough to do my last two days at work. I'd prefer to finish properly for lots of reasons and if I feel better with the rest I can't see why not.

daholster · 05/03/2015 22:05

Oh, and I bid on an Elle TENS machine on eBay. Used MIL's standard neck pain TENS for dd and it did help a bit so hopefully one designed for labour will really help.

And got a thin black cotton knee length dressing gown for £10 in Peacocks along with a 4 pack of black high wasted briefs and 2 crop top bras for sleeping/sore days for £6 there too! Hospital bag underway... Need to put stuff in it though!!!

daholster · 05/03/2015 22:07

*ie I need to put the stuff actually in the bag... Not just own stuff and have it scattered about the place!

Rustyzilla · 05/03/2015 22:26

hello all, long time without posting, you all chat way too much! Grin [gr

skyra - that news story is horrific. I live near where it happened and there are nearby areas which are very deprived. Very frightening, just hope they are caught and glad at least the baby was delivered safely. There are some terrible people in the world.

I'm now on maternity leave at 35+3, maybe a bit early for some but I find out next week if I will be induced early (GD) and it is a relief not to be schlepping up to the City daily! Also, the last few days I've been getting a lot of period-type cramps. Is that standard at this stage?!

FiRaffe · 05/03/2015 22:27

Hehe i'm a bit like that daholster - have lots of bits but none in a bag yet!

Lauren82000 · 05/03/2015 22:38

So much of it can't go in the bag till last minute anyway as you use it every day! I've got 2 pairs of glasses one that I paid extra for the thin lenses and the other with full jam jar bottoms. I keep thinking I should put the thin ones in my bag and start wearing the jam jars instead then the decent ones will be in the bag and it's one less thing to have to pack and I might just stick the contact lens solution and case I'm currently using in the bag and open a new one to use now. But then I get side tracked and it never happens Hmm

Certainly going to do some baby clothes washing this weekend when we get back home so I have at least a few items to join my nightie in the bag! The pretty permanent solid bump I've been carrying around all day has lit a bit of a fire under my bum about getting it all ready in good time. Just annoying I'm not at home so I can do these little things. Confused

cinnamongreyhound · 05/03/2015 22:59

That's why I got miniatures of all toiletries Lauren82000 so I could pack that bit. Will need to add my camera, Chargers and comb to the bag but I think that's it. Only have one pair of trousers and one top in the bag though.

TheBooMonster · 05/03/2015 23:22

we have a first aid cupboard, all the meds sort of took over a bit and we're waiting for the new cupboard to go up in the cloakroom for it all! Specifically for DD we have Paraped (calpol) baby arnica, baby vapour rub and cough mixture. She can't have plasters, and other than that Oilatum lotion or whatever other bum cream we have seems to cure all ills. We never needed anything for teething with DD and nothing for colic worked because all of her problems were caused by dairy and soya. For grownups there's all manner of painkillers, anti inflamitories, anti histamines, anti emetics, dioralyte, something that gets referred to as '4 way' for cuts scrapes etc that we have brought over from Australia by DH's cousins, arnica tablets and cream, bandages, alcohol wipes, plasters and white tape.

Think we scared the first time parents at the antenatal class this evening, midwife had to stop asking us questions about our experience from last time as she was clearly not getting the 'walk in the park' answers that she'd foolishly been expecting (and she's heard my birth story!!) was vaguely shocked that you're meant to dilate at about 1cm an hour from 3cm, DH wasn't quite quiet enough when he said 'or in our case a minute' and the pushing stage she said is meant to be like an hour?!?! not sure it was a good idea going and finding that out, between that knowledge and my wax torture earlier today I'm ready all over again to beg for a c-section (told DH, he said it's fine, he's read all about self doubt, though it's perhaps a bit earlier than expected, I can manage labour because I've done it before... this means he did actually take in some of what he read of the hypnotherapy book earlier!!)

With the bags I keep packing them, and then needing stuff and taking it out, mostly this is clothes, not sure if this is a sign I need more clothes?

Rusty I'm 35+5 and been getting period type pains on and of for a while think its normal lol I hope Smile

TheBooMonster · 06/03/2015 06:58

rusty like skyra I'm also getting period pain type cramps, and it's full on like what I'd expect for my periods, all in my bones and back, heat helps, bizarrely baths don't, seem to be one of the few people who's pain gets worse in water Confused

Got rudely awoken this morning by DH. He was supposed to take his bro to the train station but decided last min that he had too much to drink yesterday and I needed to take him! Got enough time to put my jeans on and his hoodie over my pjs. Didn't even have a coffee ready when I got back! Shock

Only got 3 weeks left at work now. Got a big job do to in those 3 weeks no idea how my manager expects 2 heavily pregnant ladies to do it. Hmm

smogsville · 06/03/2015 07:41

Rusty I'm going off at 35 wks. Not quite sure how I sailed through until 37-38 last time, I suppose I was 4yrs younger and with no toddler at home to take care of.

Thermometers - yes we need a new one, a word of warning if you buy the ear one that JL sells keep it away from older children, DD broke ours by wrenching the sticky-outy bit out of its spot. So we need a new one even if like you daholster we never trusted the readings if the contradicted the condition of the child sitting in front of us...

Good point Lauren re glasses. I would expect to be wearing mine to hospital but might add them to list I've put in hosp bag just in case.

Nice one Misty, put your feet firmly up.

RL20 · 06/03/2015 07:42

Annia hope you have a better day today. RE movement do you think baby could have possibly moved position? I rang the midwife last week and went into hospital as I worried myself sick about reduced movement (for the second time in four weeks) but it wasn't that he wasn't moving, it was that the movements didn't feel as strong. It turned out he had moved from breech to head down, so the movements I was feeling were completely different. Thankfully he was ok! Remember that's what the midwives are there for.

Another one here with the odd period cramp here and there, although they are mild.

Mswibble don't worry about the pizza, I buy one most weeks in the food shop, just incase I have a day where I just can't be bothered to cook a full meal. Very handy to have in!

RE First Aid Kits - is it bad that I hadn't even thought of that?! I mean like most of you have said, there's not much you can really give to a baby anyway is there? I have Sudocrem, and some little samples of some things I got from them Bounty/Emma's Diary packs. Suppose it's just calpol really isn't it when baby is a little bit older.

I also want to get a journal! Has been on my list for ages. I want a slightly thicker, photo album type one. Any ideas? Have kept my belly bar to put in one, that I was asked to take it at my 20 week scan Grin Strange I know ha ha.
What have you all been putting in your journals, if you've got one?

Have missed lots of posts, sorry! Ended up going to bed early again last night.
Partner has took the day off work today to go day/night fishing with his friend. So I'm staying in to wait for these workmen to come and fit the pipes Hmm

33+4

RL20 · 06/03/2015 07:45

*take it out.
Obviously wasn't asked to take my belly bar to my 20 week scan lol.

Rustyzilla · 06/03/2015 07:48

thanks skyra and boo - thought it probably was normal but they take my breath away! I don't really suffer that much with them ordinarily so wondered if it was some kind of 'ramping up' ready for birth! Confused

My hospital bag is pretty much packed. If you know you're likely going to be induced would you pack a change of actual clothes rather than nightie\PJs? E.g. for wandering hospital grounds etc waiting for induction to work? my hospital doesn't let you go home once the process has been started.

skyra13 · 06/03/2015 07:49

Boo I keep taking cloths out my bag probably due to the fact I only have about 2 tops that actually fit me now lol :)

Misty Enjoy your time off, I lost my job In November so I am now starting to loose my mind lol people keep saying enjoy it but sometimes there is to much time!

I am finding it so funny about the kid who went to school as fifty shades of grey for world book day.

skyra13 · 06/03/2015 07:51

Rusty I have taken 2 x Nighties and a change of cloths I live in my maternity leggings so have a pair of them packed with 2 different tops.

I don't think any hospitals let you go home once they have started the induction :)

AnniaFausta · 06/03/2015 08:01

RL, I've woken up this morning with hiccups in the usual hip spot and some more nudges/flutters as usual - just before I went to bed last night there was a massive spurt of movement! I reckon baby did shift positions on Wednesday and has now either shifted back or recovered energy. Either way, I think we're back on track. Here's hoping for a less hormonally weepy day.

First aid kit - we have a black metal box in the kitchen (which Ocado don't seem to do any more) with adult painkillers, plasters, wipes, etc. in it - I insisted on getting a proper box when we moved in after years of having make-shift plastic bags full of supplies! For the baby, we're going to get a 3-in-1 thermometer (Brother Max One Touch 3 in 1 Digital Thermometer) and some baby Calpol, but I suspect we'll buy what we need as we go, especially as there's a Boots not ten minutes walk away.

I'm another one with all the bits for the hospital bag accounted for but not actually in a bag. Not least because we still need to buy two of the bags. As I say to DH, if worst comes to worst, I can go to hospital clutching plastic bags, and we'll cope - but this weekend's job is to try and sort some of that out!

FiRaffe · 06/03/2015 08:04

I think it depends on the hospital skyra - i'm sure i've read about people being sent home after the first pessary if there was no obvious reaction, but obviously not experienced it!

I think this baby want to scare me.... I think they must be kicking my back as movements have changed again. They did go on a majorly uncomfortable wriggle last night whilst I was lying on the bed though so definitely still moving!

Hope you've had a coffee now Lauren!

skyra13 · 06/03/2015 08:14

What kind of bags are people taking and how many?

I have a small hand luggage suit case with my cloths and DD cloths and pads towels ect..

DH has a back pack with a change of cloths and the toiletries and snacks and drinks.

And I have nappy bag with all the nappies creams wipes and things in is this to many?

Fi yes if does probably does depend on hospital/area.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/03/2015 08:16

I was quite quick so still had the clothes I went in on when I went into labour Rustyzilla but I have clothes for after as I know I'm probably staying 48hrs I clothes for after too.

AnniaFausta · 06/03/2015 08:23

On induction - for prostaglandin gels or pessaries, some hospitals will now send women home to wait and see if they work, particularly if your cervix isn't particularly 'ripe' on the Bishop's Scale (it's a thing! NCT told me! And now I shall laugh whenever I think about the ripeness of my cervix and imagine it wearing a little mitre! Ahem. Some CofE humour there). It can take a while for the hormone to have an effect, so they'd rather not have you hanging around the unit and getting all stressed, which is fair enough.

We're planning three hospital bags too, Skyra - one for labour with the essentials (maternity nightdress, toiletries, towels, snacks etc); one for post-labour with nursing bra, going-home clothes, camera, chargers etc.; and then a changing bag with the baby's clothes and associated bits. DH will also bring a spare change of clothes for himself somehow, but I'm leaving that to him.

RL20 · 06/03/2015 08:36

Annia glad to hear that! Up until a certain point they can still shift positions so much that you just don't know! We're entitled to hormonal days! I've had a few Grin But I do hope you feel better today.
I was thinking about a thermometer, going to look at a few different ones and see!

I bought one of those Rubber Ducky bath thermometers yesterday from Mothercare. I was debating whether to or not and asked my mum what she thought. She said you can check with elbow and I thought back of my hand but for £5.99 and I love Rubber Ducks I thought why not.
They also had a wall sticker thermometer thing for the nursery, although until we move house he'll be in our room. What do people think of those? More worry than they're worth or quite handy? Or are we quite good when it generally comes to judging heat in the bedroom?

RE Hospital Bag - I had a lovely flowery one in mind that I have used for a few years now, for when we go away for weekends etc. I love it and was gutted to find that it wasn't in it's usual place so have no idea where it is! Sad So have used a slightly heavier one with little wheels on the bottom around holdall size, as is the other one. I think most things are packed into it now minus snacks etc, not really sure when to buy them?!
Also was thinking about getting some travel sized products, but have no idea what you have in a hospital! Do they ofer you a shower? I have no clue at all!!
