waves pom poms at dances' news Congratulations on your daughter and hope you get a cuddle soon. So glad she's doing well.

daholster · 04/02/2015 22:32

Stuck on the sofa feeling cold and chilly. Only reason I'm not in bed is because I need to clean up the kitchen, ugh. This requires me to get out from under the blanket. Told myself I'd be in bed by 10 and buy the wall stickers for ds's room! Hmm

dancestomyowntune · 04/02/2015 23:01

Thank you all. I have been down to see her now and she is just perfect! So emotional!

daholster · 04/02/2015 23:12

Oh dances she is just gorgeous. What a strong little girl breathing for herself already. Did you get to have a cuddle? I hope you get lots of time with her while she is in SCBU and all the support you need. How are you feeling? Sore I imagine, but I hope you are doing ok Flowers

TheBooMonster · 04/02/2015 23:27

brixton I would check with your midwife but I think a Physiological third stage (delivering placenta naturally, skin to skin) with delayed cord clamping is fairly standard practice in the UK these days unless you have a medical reason or specific wish for it not to happen. They did it with me, and pretty much everyone DH and I know with small folk also had a Physiological third stage and delayed cord clamping. They won't do it for me this time round because my body sucks, and I didn't contract properly so had a lot of bleeding, but I've got it specifically in my handheld notes that they have to do a managed / active third stage (no delayed clamping and putting me on a drip straight away for 2 hours to contract uterus and deliver placenta) which is why it's in my birth plan.

daholster · 04/02/2015 23:49

Hm I need to ask about that. Had retained products last time and midwife said "I told you to have the injection" - I did bleed a bit but not too much for anyone to really bother or suspect the retained placenta. I just thought the bleeding I had was normal. I didn't want the injection in case it made me sick and I wanted to feel S good as possible. My opinion was that it was all designed to work naturally so let it... Only it didn't, quite, did it?! I'm not sure if clamping down the uterus with the injection would have changed the retained products bit though. I do need to ask... But I think I'd still go for physiological third stage again and cross my fingers!!!

Rustyzilla · 05/02/2015 00:10

dances congratulations on your lovely little girl! Wishing you both well Flowers

Seeing that photo made me very emotional knowing I am a week ahead of you, crazy to think there is an actual life sized baby in there!

All this birth plan talk is freaking me out, I haven't even thought about that yet, and some of the stuff listed I am clueless about! Vit K injection?! Delayed cord clamping? Where did you FTMs learn this stuff?! Confused

PenguinPoser · 05/02/2015 00:13

Beautiful, dances

dancestomyowntune · 05/02/2015 00:32

Thank you all. I am a little sore and overwhelmed, I've had four term babies all vaginal births before so this is all new to me. However I feel I am doing everything I can to make sure we are both doing well, and I've managed to express twice now, which considering I have always formula fed in the past that's all new for me too. It was so lovely to see her, especially as she seemed so content, she even opened her eyes very briefly. I haven't had a cuddle yet, but hopefully I will get to hold her tomorrow. Apparently dh held her up whilst they changed her sheets earlier and they told him skin to skin will be encouraged from tomorrow.

FiRaffe · 05/02/2015 07:13

Congratulations Dances - she is beautiful. Hope you get a cuddle today, at least she is in the best place at the moment.

kismac · 05/02/2015 07:20

Aww dances. She's just wonderful.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/02/2015 07:20

Gorgeous dancestomyowntune!

Certainly here it's still standard to have the injection straight after birth and as I was induced I had to have it both times. The risks of retained placenta are greater without the injection and although I agree your body is made to do it I also don't think the injection wouldn't have been developed and used so regularly if it didn't make a big difference for many women.

You can google it Rustyzilla, or probably read a lot of mn. To be honest mn is the only place I've read about delayed cord clamping. It allows it to stop pulsing and for blood from te placenta to naturally stop flowing to the baby rather than an abrupt stop. Vitamin K is produced by your gut bacteria and is a vital vitamin, as babies don't have any gut flora yet they need to be given it at birth. The standard way is by injection, but other do opt for oral drops which are given in several doses. I believe if you ff that vitK it added but I'm not 100% on that, if you bf your baby won't get any other vitK until you start weaning.

Cisforcat · 05/02/2015 07:50

Likewise I have to have a drip as I had a large PPH last time so will need help contracting my uterus.

On a totally other note- I've woken up this morning and my bump has definitely dropped. Seems much lower and flatter ( not so out the front) if that makes sense.

I'm 32 +1 and this is my second so didn't expect that for a long time yet. Reckon it indicates anything??!

kismac · 05/02/2015 07:59

No idea what that means Cis but Im jealous. Mine is so high it's giving me breathing problems. Really considering sleeping sitting up.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/02/2015 08:26

They say with second and subsequent pregnancies they pop in and out of the pelvis Cisforcat, but my two never dropped so I can't comment from personal experience.

Hidingthefear · 05/02/2015 08:38

How lovely dances and what a lovely name! Our first thread baby, all feeling a bit more real at the sight of the first baby! She's lovely
Congrats on passing the exam!! Penguin.
Birth plans are at your 36 week appointment but I'm going to mention it next week seen as I'm thinking of possibly changing my mind for a home birth.

Not baby related but we've finished watching the walking dead now, anybody got any good suggestions for series' to watch?

I'd say it doesn't mean anything just the baby has changed position. (Could be more round the back than at the front.)I was led to believe 'dropping' was a bit of an old wives tale that indicated labour would start soon but I don't think it has any factual evidence.

I've been getting more and more alien belly recently. Last night was hilarious I sat and watched it for ages. I could almost make out a hand or foot but it was still very tiny. 11 weeks feels like ages off still. Not that I want to jinx anything. Shock

minipie · 05/02/2015 09:04

aw dances what a little sweetie. That's so fantastic you're managing to express - DD threw up all the formula they gave her on day 1, she could only manage breastmilk. Hope you get a cuddle today (and some sleep!)

Regarding managed/natural third stage - can anyone tell me what are the downsides of having the injection? I guess I had it last time, can't remember, I didn't really care at that point!

Lauren82000 · 05/02/2015 09:29

Mini pie I only remember finding the biggest blackest bruise in my thigh the next day. They must of proper jabbed me with the needle to get one like that. I don't think any of that was explained to me and I just agreed to whatever as I was in Pethadine-land.

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 05/02/2015 09:42

wow Congratulations, dances ! and welcome to the world, Tiger-Rose!

how exciting xx

smogsville · 05/02/2015 09:46

Rusty the mw asked me if I wanted vit K injection for baby at booking in this time - can't remember what happened with DD. I think they wanted to get as many boxes ticked as possible.

Think we have almost decided we don't need the spendy fitted wardrobes after all. I realised we don't really need the storage space as can move the double bed with its base drawers that's in what will be DD's new room up into loft room and just keep bed linen and towels there. Don't know why I didn't think of that before - pregbrain!

It's snowed quite a bit here. How long until the mean old sun comes out and melts it all to dirty slush though. DH has gone into work late for no apparent reason this morning, it was really annoying having him hanging around - I'm a creature of habit and don't like my routine disturbed - doesn't bode well for introducing a new baby into the house!

Last night I said 'our children' in conversation. That felt weird.

ChickenMe · 05/02/2015 09:53

Lovely pic of little Tiger dances. Hope you get your cuddles asap.

TheBooMonster · 05/02/2015 10:19

Vitamin k is because some babies are at a risk of a bleeding disorder I think? Baby can have an injection or drops but with drops there's the potential for it to be spat out so baby might not get enough.

I still can't get my head round how standard practice changes so much from trust to trust. My managed third stage is done entirely by a drip.
